Very excited to see you guys again. Patrick needs a pop filter on his lav mic and PLEASE put a limiter on the output of the mixer. Looks like the cameras could use tally lights. I'm sure everything will be better with time.

When the video cut off, I wanted to start it where you left off, but the video set up makes you watch a to z without cutting out the commercial. I wasn't willing to watch the whole thing again, not that I did'nt like it. I thought it was great. I don't have that kind of patience. Get it fixed and I'll see you soon...

just means they wanted to see the entire show and or want to see more of them.. We know things will get better. And if the commercials are worried about you skipping through, just add a small overlay in the bottom corner of each segment and we still have to see it.

I enjoyed watching episode 2 and I'm downloading the first show now. I had enjoyed watching The Screen Savers before G4 mucked it all up (I canceled my cable subscription to that channel). I'm glad to find the same great info in a similar format to the old show on the web. I'll be downloading the shows to my CF card for my PPC to listen to on my way back and forth to work. Please keep this show going. Like the screen savers was in the past, this show will be one of my primary links to the keeping up to date on tech.

Scott,
I'm impressed with how much content you all are putting out. Heck it's good to see Patrick back in video! Anyhow I'd like to get in contact with whomever is running your site, but I'm not clear if this is a Ziff Davis site, or if you're a seperate production company working in partnership? Anyhow I work for a video-publishing company without about 60,000 daily viewers and would like to discuss syndication. Contact me through my website address if you all are interested.

Other than that, looks like it's gonna be pretty successful. Just beat the recording technology into submission. Good job!

I don't know what to think anymore about this IT business. One day it's like people are panning for gold, the next day it's like starting out in the newpaper business .... paper boy style. It seems there are no occupations that have bypassed the influence of technology, but then again there are so many small to medium sized businesses that still say "WHY SHOULD I SPEND MONEY FOR THIS?". After 10 years of attempt to gain entry into this field, as a programmer/analyst I wonder myself .... "WHY unless I want to move to the big city, fight the downtown traffic, and still end up being displaced by someone in India working for $2 less an hour". Why?
I'm glad to see that someone has dug themselves out of the rubble. Good Luck!

You know, just to point out, this is so hard to find on the net. I lost the link and just spent 15 min tracking this place down. Not on google, not on digg not on yahoo could i find a direct link to the shows and this show deserves so much more press.
I can think of 5 ways off the top of my head to make this place easier to find and more accessible so itll thrive better, im sure the guys running this place can thing of 20.

Thanks alot:
First for making these shows
Second for letting us view (whenever we want to)
I had to take a test (a major test actually, MCQ) so I could not focus on the show though I actually downloaded all the episodes yesterday following a link from www.kevinrose.com
But now I have watched every single one of all the 4 episodes ( since I took my exam today after 1 month of preparation :-))
I always missed techtv and was surprised and even p*** that they took of the channel to replaced by some *$%£^......
Nice to see that former techtv guys a stepping up.
Digital life is at my top list of any tech shows on video ( i had stopped watching any show on tv.... )

My husband and I want to splurge on a flat screen TV. We want to watch movies, tv and he is also a gammer. Plasma looks nice and is cheaper, but I heard that it leaves ghosting. The guy at circuit city said that ghosting is no longer a real problem with the new plasma sets. What do you recommend considering he will be playing alot of video games...plasma or LCD.

Hi,
I recently purchased a Samsung ML-1610 printer and thus had a sense of deja-vu when you reviewed the Dell 1100 laser printer as they seem identical. I googled a review from a UK magazine, where they tested both including the intercompatibility of toner carts: http://www.compshopper.co.uk/shopper/pcpro-reviews/75055/samsung-ml1610.html
From the article: "Surprisingly, in spite of sharing the same print engine and cartridges (we found the cartridges in our review units were actually interchangeable), the ML-1610 and 1100 don't offer equivalent performance."
No idea if the samsung toner cartriges are going to be as readily available but at least there's a hope of a second option here.

wow. we're kinda using this 'forum' to chat. i know it's a bad time to be asking this, but wouldn't a chat room be nice. i mean, does an irc server take up a lot of bandwidth? well, even if it takes up a LITTLE bit of bandwidth, that'd still be too much--seeing as how dtv needs all the bandwidth it's got to help alleviate bottlenecks such as these.

Great show. Have become a regular watcher here in New Zealand by downloading the WMV file versions and watching at my liesure.
However the link you have supplied for episode 9.0 cannot be used to download the show using the "save target as" feature of a browser, even though you say to use that feature. I've tried it with both Opera (the best and now FREE browser with no ads) and Internet Explorer.
For previous episodes you have provided two links; one for watching online and one for downloading, can you please do the same for this episode and continue to do it in the future? WMV files do tend to be smallest by quite a wide margin.
Thanks, Peter

Is it possible to get a lower quality stream? My connection can't handle the quality of the show @_@.
It was fine when windows media player decided to go 48/kbs (until the video ended up stopping) but most of the time it tries 212-480 something kb/s.... and buffers often... then the video ends up freezing..... *sigh*
It's too bad my ISP doesn't give me the speed they guarantee. Then this woudln't be a problem methinks. (I can't seem to get WMP to automatically go for 48 kb/s, it just seems to pick by itself)

Hey guys, great work on the show (and the commericals don't bother me at all, esp when compared to free to air tv, or even cable (here in australia)).
Just putting in a vote for a widescreen 16:9 version (or hey, go nuts and do 16:10 if you want) to suit my beautiful iMac 20" widescreen... the quality is great when reclining from a few meters back, but the dirty pillarboxing isn't nice.
Yes, yes, I know that the maj. of PC users still have 4:3, but the dell monitors are starting to rock peoples worlds, and more and more would certainly be watching you through their htpc setup methinks.
Keep up the good work (even though thanks to time zones i only ever get the downloadable version, never live)

I have no complaints about the content - you guys are doing great and I'll be content to download the video the next day. Keep up the great work!
It seems to be a recuring theme in the comments about problems with the video. I am almost certain that it's related to the throughput on the receiving end. There are simply too many people who have no problems with the streaming version.
That said - Would DLTV consider a lower bandwidth feed for those that have limited bandwidth? Perhaps something in the range of 480kbps total or even less?
I for one would be willing to accept a lower video size to get the total bitrate down to a lower level.

Couldn't believe you were wasting bandwidth on a one minute countdown. Then I realised that it was the live stream I was watching, it was around 9pm here in the UK. Watched until the phone rang and then the dis-advantages of watching WM on a mac became obvious - I'd missed a good chunk while I was on the phone. I think the show is great! Been a fan of Patrick's since the ZDNET tv days. I also like Robert very well, I am looking forward to the HDTV special. I have a ton of questions on that subject. I am also in the XVID minority. Main reason being I like to sit in my easy chair with my favorite beverage and watch the show on my stand-alone Philips DVD player. It plays that codec. Sidenote** could you make sure you are using "Square Pixels" on XVID since my player goes nuts otherwise and I have to convert it. When I watch you on my computer, I like the H.264 codec the best by far! I think the show should be longer and just get as geeked out as you can make it. Some how-to's (video creation, wireless security, podcasting, computing tips,etc..) would be nice.
Love the show, keep up the good work.

I was disappointed that Jim didn't mention Dish's HDTV offerings. In my opinion they have the best selection of HDTV channels out there. Dish has all the stuff DirecTV has, plus they have the Voom channels. Voom blows Discovery HD Theater and HDNet out of the water. Plus their HD DVR is half the price of the DirecTV Tivo.

Bunch of whineys here need to stifle themselves.
The file sizes are okay, the settings on XviD need to be improved. What are we using, VirtualDub or mencoder? I can get you a solution for encoding those with much better results. You know, so you don't get those lines in the screen and time somebody makes a movement.
Better yet, take Robert up on his offer last episode that he'd do the XviD encode just right. You get the settings right once. You keep them, it'll be easier from there.

Alright, I did say "approximating 700 MB"!
(According to the figures shown on the list of downloads at top of page)
WMV - 140 MB
MOV - 140 MB
M4V - 155 MB
XviD - 150 MB (Alright, I did say "approximating 700 MB"!
(According to the figures shown on the list of downloads at top of page)
WMV - 140 MB
MOV - 140 MB
M4V - 155 MB
XviD - 150 MB (
MP4 - 144 MB
SUM(all formats) = 729 MB
So what I was saying is that if all those formats (apart from XviD) weren't there, we can have a single XviD .avi file of size 729 MB - and you'd be paying for the same amount of download (file size wise).
(For those of you who are tired of hearing from me - sorry about posting so frequently - but I'm just bored waiting for my XviD version!)

Hi ... excellent show, can't wait to download the file for my PSP. BUT ... When I try to convert the MP4 file for my PSP using PSPv9, it "never" works. Hangs the program. It's Monday morning here in OZ, and I've been checking your web site since Thursday last week waiting for my DL.TV Fix ... please help?
PS: If your're wondering why I don't download the WMV file? This works, but after the conversion, the sound and picture are SO OUT OF SINC it's not a pleasure to hear the sound, then wait for up to 5 seconds to see the image react.

I've enjoyed the video quality available in the H.264 format although have been noticing the slight changes in encoding over the last several episodes (#18, #19, #20). For example, #18 had a bit rate of 532kbps and it was super sharp. Then #19 was encoded with a bit rate of 386kbps which was still outstanding IMHO. This latest episode #20 begins to look more like internet video with a noticed loss of sharpness and color ... it was encoded at 232kbps which gave a tiny file size but loss some of the outstanding quality which I found appealing. I'll vote for encoding at the 386kbps rate ... a very good balance IMHO.
Audio compression is fine at the adjusted AAC 32kHz stereo (was 48kHz in earlier shows) ... and you can probably go Mono although doubt there is much savings there??? As was suggested before ... perhaps record raw audio a tad lower in two channels, one set lower and one set slightly higher, then when you put together the video pick the one that doesn't distort as much and use it for the final cut. I'd be interested to hear some of the production details as to the machine doing the crunching and 'just how long encoding the H.264 takes? :)
DL.TV is outstanding; I never miss a program. You guys are great.

No torrent feeds yet.. so sad.
Can Azureus even handle downloading 'non-torrent' files?? If not, the comment in the show of 'using azureus as a RSS agregator' is kind of not accurate. I only know it to work for Torrent downloads. It would be great if it could download other media types too.... (if it can i dont know how)

The Audio Levels still need some TLC. Patrick's dynamics are off the chart. The quiet passages are too quiet (need to turn up my volume to be intelligible), and the loud stuff is heavily clipping some point in your signal chain (probably the IC based mic pre's on your board). I sent you guys an e-mail with some more suggestions on taming down the audio dynamics of the show...
Other than that - Rock on!!! :-)

I completely disagree with ol' Don. There have been some awesome games for the DS and GCN this year. There may not have been as many games released as other consoles, but pretty much all of the in house games are great, namely Fire Emblem. And who can forget RE4? Listen slappy, just because you like playing zelda for the 10,000th time but just on a new platform with some silly new controller doesn't mean anything to me. I'm not about playing games on something that fits in my pocket (get it?)
If nintendo wants to start pushing some decent games on a legitimate piece of hardware, i'll start to pay attention... otherwise, you can have yer lame ol' gamecube. I'll bet you can't wait to start swinging that stupid new controller around when the next console comes out huh?

Patrick has stated numerous times that no formats would be dropped because of the avid supporters of each. I would be upset if h.264 were dropped, it's my encode of choice. I'm not "let down" either, I have patience - even if it runs out I can sacrifice my codec for another if I can't wait. I am interested in seeing the difference between divx6 and h.264 though.

Hello....knock knock....anybody home ad DL.TV????
Really, a week for H,264? The only reson it is not done is because they just said f*** it. So I say f*** them. guess Ziff Davis is not REEEALY into the IPTV thing. Oh well, it was good while it lasted, but if they can't put out on time at the same time every week, then it isn't really TV then is it? It is just some geek fad that will never have enough of a following to go main stream.
And to all of you who are kidding yourself about it being "FREE", it has commercials. I can get that kind of "FREE" with an antenna on my TV. Sad.:-(

goto the link in about 74 minutes (upload speed sucks) I recompressed that divx file into a 190mb file that looks more than watchable on my 21" monitor and STUNNING on my zodiac and I sourced from an already compressed divx file it would look that much better if yolu guys did it from the original. only took 52 minutes to make too (I did it 2 pass since i was sourcing from a compressed file already) from original source 1 pass would be fine.
I did mine at 480x320 thats just because that my portables screen resolution its half way between 4:3 and 16:9 :-) perfect. you could off course do it 640x480 I guess but you might need to up the bit rate a tiny bit.

Hey idiot, go read over my last post PROPERLY. I said there are always people who complain, and YOU DID THE SAME THING. Let me refresh your ADD-afflicted memory:
Quote: "I wanted to see the microsoft ad. :( "
You couldn't wait a LITTLE bit longer before getting all weepy? I don't see any sarcasm there. Stop trying to go back and change the tone of your comment after you've been called out on it.
And I wasn't even referring to you in my original post, so I don't know why you're getting your panties in a bunch over it. Chill the f**k out.

You seem to be the one with your panties in a bunch. It's one thing to complain about people complaining, but when you start calling everyone idiots while doing so you prove that you are indeed the one who needs to STFU. How can I explain sarcasm to you in a way that you'll understand? Then again, why should I bother?

My 11 year old son and I had been enjoying your excellent coverage of the CES when all of a sudden Martin Sargent showed up. His behaviour and verbal comments are HIGHLY OFFENSIVE.
We thought that DL.TV was "For tech fans by tech fans." I was at a loss to explain to my son why "Marty" was saying and doing such inappropriate things on a general audience show. His comments and behaviour were in no way, shape or form funny or entertaining. They were highly distasteful and I was almost at the point of having to turn off the show because I did not want my son (or me for that matter) to have to watch his sexually pre-occupied antics. For example:
1. His continuous references to pornography shows.
2. He asked a female demonstrator to pass a UV light over his crotch area (and actually moved it there in front of the camera while she was holdng the UV device) and said "Oh will it kill anything I might have picked up from that stripper last night..)
3. He kept harassing both female demonstrators to go to a bar with him.
4. When one female demonstrator was showing him a device that warmed up and they were both lying down he made reference to it "warming in just one area..." His constant references on a sexual theme would be insulting even to a 14 year old, let alone a general audience of intelligent TECH FANS. I think that Sargent could be credited with hurting the reputation of DL.TV just by his behaviour at the CES.
There are so many talented people out in the market place who could and would do a wonderful job at reviewing the newest and latest technology at the CES .. surely DL.TV does not have to hire someone as unprofessional as Martin Sargent to do the job. How about giving an opportunity to a Tech student, for example...
The world does not need more of this low level behaviour and talk.
DL.TV needs to wake up and maintain its professional level of coverage for tech fans. PLEASE!

I think Martin Sargent is a wonderful guy to have on the show during an event like CES. Everyone are in ecstasy over all the new products but Martin Sargent is, with his obivious talent for comedy, able to bring everything down to earth.
If some people for some reason don't like Martin Sargent the solution is simple: donwnload the show and fast forward...

I admit my post may have been a kneejerk reaction but it was not meant to feed anyone. I'm mostly a lurker around here
Actually, I don't use Windows Media Player myself. A friend showed me VLC and have been using that for everything now.
My post was meant to vent my frustration that most of the posts here are people wanting more and complaining they get less. Like I said before they work very hard to get this content out to us and I thought a little appreciation was in order.
I don't mind the commercials though that may be because I stream the show from my laptop to my TV and I'm used to seeing commercials there so I just ignore them. I just see them as the price of keeping the content free and available to me whenever I choose to watch it.
lord rel your post was actually well thought out and brought up some good points. Just thought I would throw another 2 cents in there

quit gripeing about codecs, DLTV is going way out of thier way to produce this many versions of the show anyways. VLC player plays all the files perfect anyways, so get that player and play everything. Personally I think WMV H.264 and MP3 are the only things that should be offered, WMV = quick, H.264 = nice, mp3 = fully mobile.
My $1.50 cause I'm worth that much.
Posted by:

All I want is a codec that is compatable with windows media player / media center, that doesnt suck as much as WMV does.
I've heard WMV is crappy or is it just me getting confused?
What you should do: contact the guys that do the Call for help torrents they do 45min shows in 200mb at 640*480 and it looks amazing!!! go into the CFH forums to find them at leovilletownsquare.com :)

"There are some MOV/WMV convertors, but they either cost money or suck."
Mencoder doesn't cost anything and it sure does not suck.
(hint: Mencoder works pretty good with dv input and it even compiles on osx.. and together with the latest xvid lib.. woah)
If you want to quickly convert something into xvid try:
mencoder -noskip -mc 0 -ovc xvid -oac mp3lame -xvidencopts fixed_quant=4 -lameopts cbr:preset=96 -fps 30 input.wmv -o xvid.avi
..you only have to set the fps for wmvs mostly. (to find out the average framerate of wmvs run 'mplayer shitty.wmv -v')
(btw.. I'm the one who told andy how to do it :))
..and check out the doom9 forums!

There's one other reason why I miss Divx or Xvid: my standalone DVD player can read those formats... So, when the show was available in one of those formats, I simply had to burn it as is on a DVD-RW and watch it on the big screen TV. Now, it's not that re-encoding is difficult but it's not practical to wait several hours for this so I watch it on the far less enjoyable computer screen. I suggest to drop MPEG4 in favor of Xvid or Divx.

How about doing like the twit.tv show, you could provide an RSS feed for people to automatically download new shows in fine H264 quality using BitTorrent aggregator download software. There is the http://fireant.tv for windows and mac and there is the http://dtvmac.com for mac and DTV for windows soon.. Thus you would save some bandwidth costs and we could be downloading your new shows automatically and nicely using p2p.. If you want to provide http download RSS feeds that would be okay also.. am I right thinking you don't have those video rss feeds yet?

Anyone else find it annoying that they talked about slipstreaming for 3 episodes prior and then all we got was a website and a couple screenshots?
Come on if you are going to hype a future segment maybe Robert could actually USE the thing and give us some info that can't be found in 30 seconds on a website.

In episode 29 .. Robert said there are no "Hi-Def" 42" plasmas. For the most part that is true. Most are 1024x720 which in Lloyd Case's vocabulary falls short of megapixel HD. Akai and Hitachi offer 1024x1024 42" plasmas. There would be better pixel density for sure, however the only drawback I could see is if you send PC through it ... would have to pull back on resolution to maintain aspect ratio.
As much as I don't want to be patient and wait ... this is the year of 1080P LCD. All HDTV's are pricey ... so why not wait for some good brands with better componentry to drop into the Sceptre and Westinghouse price range by end of year. JVC 40" and Sharp's redesign of it's 45" are some of the only premo stuff out now, but that will change.

My concerns are external players like a phillips DVP642 or a modded xbox.
The mpeg-4 version will play on those players but its lower quality than the divx was.
As for XBMC, well it plays the WMV version fine, and since its the smallest filesize, and its out first, I usually watch that.
H.264 is a bit demanding for a poor old xbox, you have to put up with a lot of frame drops on bitrates this high. I believe a happy medium would be to make the h.264 640x480, and decrease the bitrate some so it will play better. This would also make it smaller than the WMV version, which would make it better for archiving.
I should say I'm a fan of xvid as well, and there is some amazing stuff out on the being done with it (624x352, 50+ mins, 350MB) ... it seems you just have to have the know-how to do it, which apperently nobody at dl.tv does.

What are you trying to prove by offering H.264 AND MPEG4?

Hi,
I'm very pleased with the show and everything, but I'm asking for a bit of continuity in the video section. It confuses me. I started of watching the crappy version that normal people get from iTunes, then I started to just download the h.264 file right of the homepage. But when I compared that to xvid I switched to xvid. When that was gone I switched back to h.264 and then to divx.
I'm not even sure that was the real deal but the point is that it's confusing to have always those changes. And I say that because I store everything that I download. (It's great to look back to a certain episode and lookup some info).
I'm very sure that there's a good choice because you CAN compare codecs among each other by quality.
Good luck.

Another vote for divx, Patrick emailed me a response a while back about the Divx.
"We get less than 300 downloads per episode, give or take, in the DivX/XviD formats. Out of tens of thousands of downloads, Getting that format requries us to do an extra capture and encode on top of all the other enocding. So it's kind of a labor of love... and we weren't getting much love for it. Factor in a 12-18 hour work day on the days when we have to do all the encoding and uploading... and it got dropped. Oddly enought, Scott's encoding episodes 24 to the latest episode this week, so you'll be caught up for a while.
BTW, I thought the Archos could play MPEG4?

Well I vote for DivX/XviD, but understand your position ... I think one of the reasons there are so few downloads is DivX is the last one posted. I will download the mpeg4 version because it's released before the DivX.

I am planning to buy a HDTV, and I was browsing the Philips Online Store and I found some interesting specs. I am looking at the 42" LCD and the 50" Plasma. The 42" plasma has a Contrast ratio (typical) : 500:1 and the 50" plasma has Contrast ratio : 10000:1, so I don't know if the contrast ratio is really that important or how it'll effect the colors. Also the 42" LCD's brightness : 400 cd/m2, and the 50" plasma's Brightness : 1500 cd/m2, do I really need my TV to be really bright and how is that going to effect the colors or resolution? Then I found an interesting point, on the Plasma page it says it has a High-definition plasma WXGA display, 1024 x 768p, but if you scroll down it says that the panal resolution is 1366 x 768p, yet on the LCD side it is all 1366 x 768p. What does that mean or is it that they just made a mistake on the page? Last question, whats a good contrast for a LCD backlight? Thank you for looking over all of my questions, and please give me some firm answers.

About time ya'll.
I've been albe to DL the show since this morning.
You guys need to leave the comment section alone and let people post the links.
If anyone wants, you can change the 33 to 34 for next weeks show as well since it takes them longer to post the links, then it does to upload the files.

http://zdpub.vo.llnwd.net/o2/dltv/episode33/dl.tv.033.wmv
For next week; wait a couple hours after the show, then change the "33"'s in the above link to "34", and you won't have to wait until they post the link some 12 hour later.

You are always going to miss counting the d'loads that get passed on to other http mirrors etc. You'll get the same with your torrent files going to other trackers. But if you seed enough hosts early people will generally stick with the tracker with the most seeds.
As for couting download numbers, Have your client seeding the whole file early and create a simple plugin for Azureus that keeps stats on peer numbers. The instant any peer reaches 100% of the file you count it as a hit.
Can you tell all your http hits actaully have the whole file? ;)

Here's my theory about the 1200 hours bug: Somewhere they're storing the uptime in milliseconds in an unsigned 32 bit integer.
If you did that, you'd have (says google calc)
(((2^32) / 1000) / 60) / 60 = 1193.04647
hours before it overflows.
Bad developer! No cookie!

A computer would be a digital source. Going to VGA means converting that digital source into an analog stream. To present that onto an LCD would mean converting back to a digital signal again. Since a possibility of signal degradation occurs with each translation, why not go from a dignital source to a digital display?

The reason i belive they take so much time to do their encoding is that they actually want the output video to look good so they're taking their time with that. Also some compression works better with certain kinds of video, i've had quite a few videos of boradroom presentations with very bright colors on the walls in the room they were given, which looked god awful in divx and xvid but excellent in quicktime and windows media 8/9.

Why hasn't dl.tv exploited bit torrent as a distribution system? It might take an extra half hour to get all the torrents made, but the bandwidth savings would be substantial and it would make for faster downloads as well.

Watched the show live over a DSL-line in Sweden last night and it was smooth. Was expecting dropouts, but there were no hitches whatsoever.
It's really nice to watch it live in decent quality knowing it is streamed half across the globe. Keep up the good work.

Other than that small detail, it's a great show

Just thought I would let you know that not just Canada has Curling Stadium's. Here in Duluth, Minnesota we have a curling club - Link: http://www.duluthcurlingclub.org/ , where the 2006 U.S. Junior National Championships were held earlier this year. Here in Minnesota many towns have clubs like this, to learn more about curling check out the UNITED STATES CURLING ASSOCIATION site - http://www.usacurl.org/

Thanks Robert and Patrick for your DivX distribution. I was waiting for Episode 37 in DivX, but it did not come... so I gave up on that. Now how about WMV/H.264 in High Definition? Joking. I know you have a busy schedule and you have lives, so thanks for the DivX (Better quality especially when I transcode to burn onto DVD to play on regular DVD player).
I think you guys should update the sidebar links now that Episodes 38, 37, and 35 are the lastest episodes, not 30, 29, etc.

i wonder how much interference is being caused by the BPL system that is in place, in cincinati that the poster on here was talking about?
Sure have been many complaints by amateur radio operators being one myself, and professional electronics engineers alike , and others. it will be interesting to see how it works out. The technology sure has it's critics. The FCC also seems to have taken a blind eye to the technical consequences, in lue of the mighy $ as well.

When I saw 170mb I was happy, but it turns out it's much much more than that, and I know we may not be the target audience here, but hey people, there are still people around the world using 256kbps DSL... even if it is because we have no other CHOICE.
Honestly, a LQ version would be greatly appreciated but those of us in countries that have no access to faster broadband even if we'd be happy to pay for it. (I'm in Argentina, by the way).

Why all the upset about immediate file availability and download sizes?
Folks, these shows are provided for FREE. How about a bit of thanks to the team that brings this to us instead?
For what it is worth I'm on dialup. Yes, dialup. Not even 56k because my telephone service doesn't support it. There is NO broadband available where I live. (Ah yes, there is a horrible price for all of this wooded beauty. ;)
I want to see the video of the show so I will download it with Flashget. It can take a day or two. And you know what, as much as that sucks I'm STILL thankful to have it available. It's worth the wait. Thanks guys. :)

Ok, here is the solution to dl.tv's problems...
1. Stop streaming the show. It doesn't work for enough people (people=morons) and creates panic style comments. Comments should be about the show content, not about download problems. Continuing as you are reflects badly on Zdnet, Patrick, Jim, etc.
2. Record the show; post the show; announce the show.
Problem sol ved.

Crap folks, There working as fast as they can; doing the best they can. Chill with the complaints and give more "at-a-boys" and or Good Job Guys!. All the negativity does not make them work any faster. As for the encoding and file formats? Honestly I don't care; as long as I can watch it with a player that I have on my system I am good. I mean VLC can pretty much play anything MS Player Classic can too. And the file sized? I am sure at LEAST 60% (or more) has some form of broadband or has access to one either via a friend's house, at there work place (if they allow that kind of thing) or good ole open free wifi. Besides if you want you downloads to go faster; kill BitComent or the like's for a couple mins. Heh.
Patrick, your doing a kick ass job Being Watching TSS since the beginning and listen to the other podcast that the old school TechTV Crew (TWiT, Whats New Now, The Chris Prillio Show, Diggnation, ExteremTech). Rock on man, Rock on.
Just wanted to drop in my two cents& I'll return to the back of the room now&. PEACE!

Good God, you have a LOT of stupid people posting to this page....
Whine-bitch-moan Dvorak...
Whine-bitch-moan TWiT...
Whine-bitch-moan shill for Microsoft...
You kinda get the idea...
This is for the Brain-dead who insist on mistaking what this page is for;
It's NOT about TWiT! Patrick and Robert does that show because they WANT to, and ZD DOESN'T have a problem whith that.
It's NOT for bitching about how you hate Dvorak. Simple thing, stupid, DON'T download! Nobody is making you listen!
It's NOT for bitching about Leo's absence or presence. LEO makes that decision, not Ziff-Davis.
It's NOT for bitching about (your favorite program here)!
DLTV puts the shows out in as many formats as possible so other people with crappy hardware can STILL see the shows!
Yah, I'm NOT thrilled I HAVE to download in WMV! This G3-500 ONLY shows choppy in ANY other format, and WMV is the least of the worst!
C'mon ON, people! Clean the CRAP outta your heads! Positive and negative comments, yeah. That's how shows evolve. Random ranting and raving (sorta like my post), take it elsewhere! We already get enough e-mail SPAM without getting blog-spam!

For the love of god could you please not use crappy comic sans ms for the end credits! Is this a comic book? no. Are the end credits a word bubble? no. Is this for little children who like crappy overused fonts? I hope not. Comic Sans has its uses but NOT as the end credits to a tech show. I want to stab my eyes out when I see it
used like that.
Other than that the show was ok, in the beginning it was stiff and seemed kinda akward and the black background makes everyone seem far apart and distant.
Not much was said here that hasn't been said before, the problem with iptv now is that 40% of the shows are tech shows and they all talk about the same stuff that has been written about already on 80 blogs because there isn't that much tech news in one week for 12 shows and a hundred blogs to all say original things.

I like video podcasts, these aren't the days of Ovaltine and LIttle Orphan Annie anymore. I simply don't have the patience for every Tom Dick and Harry audiocast coming out these days. My loss and my ad-revenue eyeballs, I guess.
Video compression efficiency is IMHO a lame reason to use a hideous black background for a visual presentation.

Hello DivX lovers,
I read a couple of posts saying that the DivX file is not working all that well. I tested what we had and it was working fine, but I recaptured and rendered a new file anyway. So, download again and enjoy. I tested the file on a couple different machines and looks fine. Let us know via email if there is a problem.

I just have to say, the show is great. I love the new project also. I am a government contracted network engineer with a passion for new tech, gadgets, and gaming. Your insites reflect my own experiences with my after work hobbies. Like the Orb network topic. I've been a user since Dec. and love the feature. I use an ATI A-I-W 8500DV with tuner capabilities on one of my desktops at home and love the freebee as well. It was refreshing to see your episodes that involved the topic of how the people at Orb funded the setup. Your input and research answered a question that I thought I would never have blogged or emailed. Good form also. Very relaxing and not so stuffy. Buy the way, Verizon Fios is here is Pittsburgh. I do not benefit from the service(but will soon). One of my colleagues got the $45.00 version with 15 Megs but called to downgrade after your webcast. The Fluke shows the difference only when Ping(ing) out to remote ip location. Some snags on server redirects. The drop down of bandwith speed evened out his speed tests across the board. Well, anyways thank you. I enjoy the show and hope you keep it up.

Maybe a corrupt download (to the UK), but: the .m4v crashes both iTunes and QuickTime Pro (after about 40 seconds from the start). QT Pro reports "Buffer overrun detected".

They said they can't do bittorrent till they can track how many times poeple download the files. So they can charge the ad people and make a living.
Personally this should be done asap because they would save a ton of bandwith which would in turn save a lot of money. I always have a 5:1 to 10:1 share ratio every week with ogg vorbis version of twit.

I love the show and have been following you guys since TechTV days but I do get disappointed when you were asking yourselves whether "is there curling in Sweden" and other facts about the olympics. Sweden friggin' won the olympics in hockey and curling. It's almost as sad as when Kevin Rose was wondering what currency SEK was? That is the Swedish currency. I've lived in the US for close to 10 years and I do keep myself a little bit more informed about what I'm talking about. Shape up, we all know you're smart guys.......instead of coming across as dumb...

I've noticed that on the Divx version of the show, the audio gets a little bit out of synch with the video. This usually happens in the last 25% (roughly) of every episode.
I usually watch the episodes on my Palm Lifedrive with tcpmp (which is why I need the Divx, it's the only format the program will play).
Anybody else notice this, or is it just me?

I'm at a tech park with quad OC-3's, so DL speeds for me are usually limited by the upload speed of the server.
For the first time, DL.TV has downloaded in a relatively speedy fashion. From 1800 - 1900 KB/sec. (14.4Mbps)

I use Verizon DSL in Seattle and am paying for 3Mbps but my dl.tv speeds are stopped at 192KBps. What gives? Is Verizon speed capping me or what? I use the divx format because I have an awesome upconverting Toshiba DVD Player (Costco only 80 bucks) that will play straight divx files but 50 minutes to download....might as well be dial-up.
I know it's not the dl.tv's fault; just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this.

I agree we don't need DLTV in HD. Scary.
But not everybody watches it on a 3inch ipod screen.
640x480 on a 27inch screen show alot of compression artifact. The DIVX version is 720x544 and looks great on a home theater system.
I know I am not the only on who feels this way.
Complainers just post more.
Regardless of my DL speed, I would download the higher resolution file. I download overnight or download and do something else until it finishes.

Seems a bit illogical to have me tie up an ip address downloading at this speed for 15 minutes when I could download in 20 seconds if they'd do away with the packet governor. The ip would return to the heap and bandwidth freed. Stupidity must be a corporate thang, either that or Ma Bell has the general IQ of a houseplant! 165MB in 15 min 10 sec. Thanks DL.TV! Well, once I was getting 77 kb/sec and power cycling fixed it. But every download was slow. If you're downloading TWiT from an AOL server at you're usual speed then it's most likely NOT on your end. But, I've noticed on Ma Bell after I've downloaded a gig of FREE videos from various places, the speed drops if the files are over 100MB, normal if under. Are you exceeding you're local daily bandwidth usage allowance? Maybe ZD has exceeded the bandwidth they're paying for, for certain server farms? I get the impression they have this stuff spread out all over the place. I wonder if there's a way to pick the servers that are least busy? Either way just trying to help, 3-15 is way too slow! I can see why you'd be pissed.

Cinema Widescreen Movies
HD special, this show rates 5 out of 10 guys, due to the lack of babes presenters !
Don't your have any babes over there in the USA that know anything about technology?
Sorry you guys can't afford chairs, it makes me tired to watch you standing.
Its great to watch cinema wide screen movies at home in high definition 1280x1080p.
Cinema has a aspect ratio, width to height, that is greater than 2.35:1.
Widescreen TV is only 16:9 (16/9 = 1.78:1).
So when watching a cinema wide screen movie on a 16:9 TV often the movie is letterboxed, that is there are black bars at the screens top and bottom.
Maybe it would have been better to make the world standard for wide screen TV wider, say 2.5:1 so we don't have letterboxed black bars.
Home theatre high definition (HD) front projectors can overcome letterboxing black bars.
The reason why the world has HD is for near floor to ceiling home theatre to become a reality.

Yeah, it really surprised me to see all the feeds my itunes suddenly subscribed too, lol. I think I'm moving towards the manually download method too. Of course the problem with that is if I can remember to download them. I love all the new podcasts/vidcasts coming from Revision3, Ziff Davis, and TWIT but there needs to be an uber feed with all the shows. Make it simple to download all your favorite podcasts and vidcasts at once. Of course that would eat up a hard drive pretty quick. Mine is almost full with just DLTV and French Mai...err.. There are many factors for speed issues including:
1. High number of requests (What you people have experienced)
2. Network congestion *do 2 the above
3. A-hole has lots of bittorents going on your network
4. Problems on the server end
etc...

Thanks for the timely, transparent, and detailed update.
I'm consistently impressed by your candor, profressionalism, and dedication to your committments.
Judging by posts and comments from your current and former colleagues, my evaluation is far from unusual.
Keep on rockn' & rolln'.
