Thursday December 8, 2005

DL.TV Episode 20 aired at 1pm PST, this Thursday, December 8th.

Here's the deets:

  • Few video games are innovative enough ( and, frankly, weird enough) that we simply must play them on the show. Animal crossing is definitely one of these games! Jennifer Tsao joined us from Electronic Gaming Monthly to demo the new Nintendo DS title.
  • The pre-release of IE 7 won't be out until 2006, which means internet users may have to wait up to a year for new IE 7 features like tabbed browsing, and one click cache erase. Of course, they could just download Firefox...
  • Speaking of Firefox, version 1.5 has an unpatched vulnerability in the history.dat file that could lead to a nasty denial-of-service attack, and malicious execution of code.

  • Some smart guys at Caltech set a new internet world speed record: they peaked at 150 gigabits per second--that's 130 dvd movies in a minute! BitTorrent users will have to wait for that kinda speed at home, though.

  • The EFF is suing sony...why??? Danny O'Brien, activisim co-ordinator for the EFF, justified the lawsuit over Sony's SunnComm DRM ( no, it's not for the rootkit), and told us how to identify CDs that put stuff on your system.

  • Patrick's SLRs (cameras, that is). In case you missed Tuesday's show, we brought the budget D-SLR cameras back on the set.

  • Viewer Question: What is a good, free RSS aggregator?

  • Answer: There are lots of good RSS readers out there, but if your looking for a free one try SharpReader, or the Yahoo reader that comes with every Yahoo account.

  • And, as always, more viewer questions are answered, fewer are ignored, and we all learn something...

This is my first official gripe ;)

I thought the times were Tues and Thurs at 6pm PDT?

I know I can DL the show anytime, but it's just not the same as 'live' LOL

I wonder - have you found that people stream the live show and then DL it? If so then I can see why you would want to have fewer people watching live - bandwidth costs.

Thanks for the hard work though guys. It's a minor complaint that I can live with really.

I agree, I think you guys should try to set a specific time so we can know for sure like any other show. I Understand things come up and everything though so its not a huge deal, it says that it aired at 1pm and yet i still dont see a link to download it and its already 3 hours later... Anything soon?

Dude...look at the time...1pm PACIFIC STANDARD TIME. Quit complaining!!!

Posted by: eflightcentral
December 8, 2005 7:11 PM

DUDE! What's your point? Yes they posted at '1pm PACIFIC STANDARD TIME!!!'. They are supposed to air at 6pm pacific standard time.

Again - not a real complaint but an observation and suggesting that if they do a live show then have a schedule and stick with it.

We all understand that there are times when it can't air normal time - not a big deal. Just post something with the new schedule.

If it's a downloadable only show, then no big deal either.

I love the show and I do not mind the 4:3 but could you guys jsut make a high res of the 4:3 to make it look better??

It's no wonder the TWit gang don't post to their own boards more often, nothing but flamebait and whiners.
This stuff is free, I'm happy.

I would like to clarify on what time we air, or let us say stream DL.TV. Tuesday's at 6pm Pacific (9pm Eastern) and Thursday's at 1p Pacific (4p Eastern). Downloadable formats will be available for each show as soon as we can post. Thank you all for watching and please let us know what you think. We read all the posts and emails and try to do our best to get you the best of what Tech has to offer.

They've always said the Tuesday show would be at 6p pacific, and that the Thursday show would be at 1p pacific. Maybe you should pay a little more attention. Or maybe you should stop complaining, cause you can download the show soon after it airs live.

If you aren't able to watch it live, they are nice enough to post the recording, so stop complaining!

i'm starting to watch regularly (a show with my two favorite hosts from TSS?! great!). but a couple small suggestions:

add a compressor to the audio so the volume stays consistent. patrick leans forward, it get's really loud. the guest is a little to the left, you can barely hear her.

add links to everything mentioned in the show in the blog entry. what was robert's favorite torrent client? etc.

thanks and keep up the great work.

I've certainly tried to make it clear that I am not really complainig - just curious when the show times are. Why not list it on the main page to avoid any questions?

The only one complaining here are the people claiming that there are a bunch of whiners and complainers ;) (notice the wink emoticon? It's the best indication I can give of brevity - don't take this too seriously - it's just a show)

Any questions?

I was just wondering on the technical side, if you considered encoding for the PSPs MP4 format.

At 320x240 and 30fps, it works on Palm/WinMobile PDAs, the PSP AND the iPod video, as well as Macs and PCs with Quicktime installed.

I've tested it out, and it's almost universal.

Enough with the "I digress" quote... If you keep using it, i will have to use it as a drinking game...

yes the "i digress" thing patrick says is totally annoying...it pisses me off when he says it.

Seriously, I think you're annoyed by it if you want to
be. He says it more often than Peter Jennings might,
(maybe once every 1 or 2 episodes?) but it's a
non-issue.

Just watched the show after Google Alerts notified me of the fact that SharpReader (which I wrote) was in the shownotes. Imagine my surprise when I found there's no actual reference to it in the show itself!

...there's half an hour of my life I'll never get back...

nah just kidding - as a former TechTV/screensavers watcher (and current twit-listener), I quite enjoyed the familiar dl.tv format. Now if only wmp on my pocketpc wasn't suck a piece of crap :-(

Shows like this make me want to buy an xbox 360 so I'd be able to stream the content to my living room TV.

btw Patrick you're not the only one that buys Fiona Apple CDs - and after hearing this show I'm very glad I turned off auto-play a long time ago on my PC.

thanks for the show!

I really enjoyed the segment with Danny O'Brien from EFF, though I thought putting his name on the screen a couple times, during the interview, would be nice... Or perhaps... a window on the computer screen? I love the show, keep up the good work. :)

I would recommend RSS Bandit (http://www.rssbandit.org/) for an aggregator that is my current favorite.

Three phrases should be among the most common in our daily usage. They are: Thank you, I am grateful and I appreciate.

Yes, audio again. Now that Patrick is wearing a shirt with a placket (and has the lav out of his (5 pm?) neck shadow), how about a little attention to audio behind the camera?

1. Have *someone* wear headphones and turn ze knob. There's no substitute. The poor game woman was inaudible. Automation will never fix this.

2. You need at least some compression. Patrick hits zero only twice or so, when we hear the full POWER OF HIS BARITONE.

3. The highs were more than a touch rolled off. Low bitrate in the encoder?

4. And yes, you could have fixed it all in post. See 1., above.
