Saturday January 7, 2006

It's DL.TV's last day at CES, and we've got a ton of innovative and quirky gadgets to show you before we head home.

Here's the deets:

  • Google Video is expanding into the pay-for-content market by offering CBS programs for $1.99 an episode. They've got tough competition from Yahoo, Apple, and Microsoft so they better have some cool software tricks ready...
  • What gadget earned the prestigious title of last gadget standing? Watch and find out.
  • DAVETV's IPTV software runs on top of Windows, and has some major content announcements on the way. Good luck guys, and don't forget about DL.TV!
  • Topping our list of unjustifiably expensive things that we desperately want are the Shure E500 headphones ($500). In-ear 'phones never sounded so good.

  • We've got plenty of audio toys including the iPod-killing Creative Zen Vision M, the fashionable and functional Product M Tunebuckle, iPod backpacks, and many more.

  • The DualCor cPC bridges the gap between cell phones and ultraportables with its power saving switching technology.  Gearlog's Sascha Segan gives us the scoop.
  • Shure's i4C ($319) phone/audio headset has great sound quality, but Logitech's Mobile Stereo Headset ($129) has lots of features for less dough.

  • The Garmin Forerunning 305 uses GPS to monitor your running speed so you can brag about your track times to friends.

  • Martin Sargent goes undercover(s) to get the 411 on security software and hardware.

  • Jim Louderback shows off the Digiview International Time Clock ($59.99), which features six (not five, six) wireless sync points around the globe.

  • Vector's Stromtracker 10,000,000 ($69.99) combines an AM/FM weather alert radio with a spotlight powerful enough for police chopper duty.

  • Like to talk to your mouse? The Yappernaut Yapper Mouse ($29.99) actually talks back...
  • The Lego Mindstorms NXT ($249) brings USB, bluetooth, and advanced sensors to the venerable block kits; we tried our luck with a Lego slot machine later in the show.
  • USB thumbdrives are getting huge: the Verbatim U3 Smart Drive packs in 4GB.

  • Plus, more gadgets and your viewer questions. Also check out ces.pcmag.com for full coverage of CES.

It has promise, but I can't even get through it. I understand that you're streaming to force viewers to sit through commercials, but if I miss something, I can't back up to replay what I missed. Worse yet, the stupid thing has restarted on me four different times so far, and I'm not even half way through. I'm afraid to check out sites during the show, because I might just restart it. Once I restarted it while looking to see if it's on iTunes. I'm serious - this issue alone is so d@mn frustrating that I'm ready to blow it off entirely in favor of TWiT podcasts and written articles. I really hate to say that, because I want so badly for this to work. The content is good, and greatly appreciated. I'm sorry, but I just refuse to waste my time any further putting up with the stream resetting back to the beginning, and having to sit through the same stories multiple times. Make it downloadable like Systm, and quit jacking with us.

Watched the show for the first time today. I have to say, it's taking me back to Tech TV days (no zdtv memories)...

Great job improvising... gg Kevin (we need more hax).

Keep it up!

Ummmmm - I'm glad it wasn't just me, it cut off right before the Madden 2K6. The sound thing I think has been pushed enough, but that was the only negative stuff.

Enjoyed what I saw immensely! Keep it up.

Awesome show! I too remember you both on the screen savers (and of course leo laporte), and glad to see the legend, Kevin Rose on this. But my question is, even though it's been out for a number of years and still hasnt picked up, do you believe that Sony's Minidisk series is doomed? I love mine and believe that in one way it is superior to mp3 players is the fact that Sony's proprietary format has such wonderful sound quality and takes less space than compairable quality mp3s. EVEN THOUGH I love my mp3s too what are your views on this?

Its great to see Pat back again. It provides a little variety between all of the techtv guys. Instead of building a set, why not place a green screen and run the show from a 'different place' each week.

Compressor/ Limiter from Behringer is only $130. Play an extra commercial.

I just finished watching and it was great to see Patrick Norton again. I miss my TSS fix every day, I learned so much from that show and Patrick that I became a true PC geek! I loved the show, so do lots of them. Thanks to Kevin Rose(or whom ever) for posting the link on digg.com. Can't wait for more. Soon, I will have no need for regular TV I can watch my faves on line. Except, Leo is back with Call for Help, so watch that as well. Great show. Keep it up.

Guys, LOVE the show!

I have a request that i'm hoping can be easy to do (assuming i can explain this well):

Can you make a single, static link that would always link the most recent show as opposed to having discrete links for each show?

I'm trying to incorporate this into my Snapstream Beyont TV PVR software. I have several internet radio stations linked such that if I click on the link, it would stream the radio station in windows media player. If i could there was one single, static link to your most recent show, i would be able to stream your show through my 10-ft PVR interface and watch while on my couch.

can this be done?

I know that some folks like the lower resolutions for the images, but I'd prefer a higher quality picture. Download via bittorrent overnight and I can watch the show next day. - MPEG4 so it plays on linux x86_64 :)

September 15, 2005 9:51 PM

Hey!

Thanks for all the different formats! Great job!

Couple of constructive suggestions....

Subjectively...my opinion is that the H.264 Quicktime 7 version looked best. But you really should'nt call it "Hi-Res" since it's 320x240 :)

Really though. If you could provide something along the lines of an NTSC resolution quicktime/wmv so that when I burn a DVD or watch it on the big screen Patrick's face would look better than the pixelated mess after it gets enlarged?

I'd as for Hi-def resolution but you probably would trash my email :)

Thanks for such a great show!

Posted by: Jay K
September 16, 2005 9:54 PM

For me, the mpeg and quicktime files won't play audio and the wmv files won't play video... I've tried mplayer and vlc on gentoo linux. I don't have flash because there is no 64-bit flash plugin :(

Hey Patrick and Robert

I love the show. Between this, TWiT, Security Now and Diggnation, I now get more tech media than I did back when TSS was on!

And I love the "unfinished rec room" look. I did a computer show on the local community cable channel a few years ago and that was exactly the look we went for on the set. Don't finish the set - the unfinished look is exactly what it should be!

Keep up the great work - I look forward to watching many more shows.

Good job Patrick and Robert. Great teaser on new LCD panels - definately let us know as they become available- I'm in the market for a home media center 30-40" and Robert's review of the Westinghouse makes me think I need to wait a little while longer for lastest models. Maybe you could include a teaser section at the end of each ep. with future product first looks and full review timetable.

I have a question about the formats offered if anyone could be kind enough to explain.

What's the difference between the h.264 and the mpeg4? Is h.264 considered mp4?

Posted by: William Foster
September 26, 2005 2:26 PM

Patrick asked at the end of the show why a majority of us would like to see an XVID version of the show. I believe it is because of compatibility with both software and hardware, and the fact that more and more people are watching IPTV content on their televisions utilizing Media Center PC's or Divx compatible DVD players. I myself own both the Philips DVP-642 and the IO-Data Avel LinkPlayer 2, both of which play XVID and Divx (actually the DVP-642 plays XVID files depending on how they were encoded). I agree with the fact that H.264 looks really good with smaller file sizes compared to the other codecs, but many of us don't utilize it in our content viewing and encoding. I usually don't like to sit in front of my PC or Mac and watch all of the great new content like Systm, From the Shadows, Command-N, GO-Open, The Packet Sniffers, and ofcourse Digital Life TV (I wasn't successful at coverting the 2nd video episode of TWIT because it was encoded in H.264). I'm very thankful for XVID because I usually end up having to convert some of the shows I download (namely the last 2 episodes of FTS, all 13 Episodes of Go-Open, and this very last episode of DLTV which for some reason the Mp4 file wouldn't play in either my Avel or my PC). XVID is pretty much the standard for video on the Internet and is used for basically almost everything. The Revision3 crew are still posting their episodes in XVID, and it looks great on my TV! Well, hopefully my extensive rant explains at least some of the reasons why we'd like to see good old XVID. Thanks Patrick, Robert H., and all the rest of the Digital Life TV crew for bringing us the greatest tech content on the Internet! We all really appreciate it! Well, at least I do. Take care!

FWIW I've been wrestling with Windows Media player for almost a year now (we do 500,000 Windows Media Streams a day). Your viewers going to have raft of compatibility problems and the like. Go ahead and build a player using Flash8 with the On2 Codec. At 300Kbps, not only does it look better than Windows Media @400Kbps (saving you bandwidth), but it's much more stable and works on every platform.

If you preffer Flash7 (since 8 was just released). Flash7 Video is much more universaly supported than Windows Media, but admitidly without the On2 Flash8 codec, it's not very good quality.

FWIW we're ussing FFMPEG to dual-encode our streams into Windows Media and Flash8, but as Flash8 becomes more common, Windows Media is simply going to fade away into the background.

Good Luck

October 8, 2005 8:50 PM

Really enjoyed the whole robotics segment. Very nice. The segment on the NAS Drive kit was very useful too. I'm not too crazy about the backup/storage options that I've seen in the last couple of years, so I haven't bought any of them. I like everything I saw in the segment about the kit. I don't know, it just seemed like the right approach for me. I'll probably buy that or something very similar to it for my external storage needs. Also, good of Patrick to mention Naslite (I've actually given serious thought to using that before). Good segment overall.

Also, I appreciate that you guys continue to make the relatively crappy WMP version available. h.264 looks great, but it just about kills my CPU (90-100% load constantly), and I prefer to keep its temp below 50C. I only have 1.4 GHz over here. WMP isn't as crisp, but it's easier on my hardware, so that's the one I always download for this show.

Hey guys, wanted to wish you all a great job on putting together a great tech program. I do want to ask if you've heard about the HDR Monitors and when you'd expect a consumer version to be available. It is the next step in the HD format and there's a great company in Canada (BrightSide Technologies) looking for investors and major manufactures to start producing their own lines. I'm an animation/ graphic artist and I'd love to see a rally for these new-gen monitors.

How am I supposed to watch a Tech show and trust what they say when they can't even compress their video properly. And it's not just this episode either. All episodes have H.264 as the largest download!

H.264 - 195 MB
WMV - 168 MB
XviD - 171 MB

Why would H.264 (which is more efficient than both WMV AND XviD) be the largest download! All else being equal, H.264 should come in smaller.

1) XviD is an implementation of MPEG4 "ASP"
2) H.264 is MPEG4 "AVC"
3) AVC is a superset of ASP and can do everything that ASP can.

Unless someone is asleep at the wheel it seems impossible that they can screw up the encoding settings so that H.264 is the worst codec.

Great show!

On your last show you mentioned that there was going to be a special on HDTV. GREAT!!! But...

How bout for that show ONLY having an h.264 720p (or if you are really brave) 1080i version of the show available? Come on! Practice what you preach!

thanks again for the great show!

Please jsut give up on these crappy windows formats. They rarely work. mp9/mp10 most borwsers dont' know hte difference and try to use the wrong codecs/protocals. result is a video or stream that jsut doesn't work for a lot of people.

I can't even play the stuff here and it's frustrating as heck. stick with quicktime for streams. xvid is nice also for downloads.

using windows formats jsut makes you appear technologically challenged. lol

Digital Life was Awesome! I went to the Xbox360 keynote on friday morning. Peter moore was the speaker, and everyone got a Xbox360 T-shirt on their chair, which was pretty cool. I also saw Jim Louderback on Friday. He was doing some presentation. I also got to play Mario Kart for the DS, and it played an looked better than I expected.

The only disappointment was that they had no playable Xbox360's. :(

And I didn't get to meet Patrick Norton, John C. Dvorak, or Robert Heron. Always Next time!

I asked, you provided. I thank you for your consideration. Everyone has an encoding/viewing preference to suit their needs, and recognizing as many as you can surely is a pain. DVTV comes to me streamed from PC to XBMC frontend, outputted to HDTV. I'll take all the bytes you can serve up. Viva La IPTV!

I just want to say enjoy watching your show. There's nothing on TV here in England like this. In fact TV is more or less useless (thanks to Rupert Merdoch). Anyhow longlive ipTV. Out of the dozen or so Video Podcasts that I watch or listen to each week this is certainly the most professional. Keep up the good work (the same goes for the builders! How long does it take to decorate a set??).

Finally I totally agree that MemTest is a superb app. Also a piece about reinstalling Windows XP would be very interesting, look forward to it.

If you zoom in enough on my little icon, you can see the city of Chadron listed in it's correct spot (NE, but my little pin is in SD and my little info box says I'm in Chadron (SD). Just a tip on encoding. When encoding, turn off power management, don't surf web, or retrieve email, or open any windows, destination and source drives should be different and have a capable system. Let the system encode without any interruptions. I've downloaded the last 5 episodes in WMV and I have experienced this myself. Lots of jitter and skipping. My 2 cents. Still excellent show! The Screen Savers lives!!!! Attack of the Show? WTF?

Unfortunately while impatiently waiting for the H.264 it has arrived and crashes about 5 minutes into the program. Grr. If given a choice between WMV and XVID I would consistently choose XVID. But I don't get to make that choice, because the XVID link is frequently missing. Normally this is a non-issue, because I still get to see the show, and normally nobody cares anyway, but Pat was quoting format statistics on the show.

Please keep the XVID, and if possible, make it available near the same time as the other streams.

Also, how much work do I have to do to watch those MP4 streams on my PSP? Are they already formatted as needed, with the "atom" in the file header set to make the PSP happy? If not, what do you guys do to watch the MP4 stream on a PSP?

HD Video:
One viewer had a question about how to take high-quality video from his camera to his HDTV and preserving its resolution. How about editing with an application of choice, and then exporting to WMV-HD and playing on a WMV-HD compatible player? I am not a big fan of WMV, as a Mac user, but it would be another option in this case.

There is even a Mac encoder at flip4mac.com (granted it costs a pretty penny, unlike the Windows version, but of course, not having to actually run the Windows OS to create WMA/WMV content is priceless :D )

Low End Mac hint:
Someone above posted that they were using a lower end Mac system and having little luck with the H.264 version. I have a 1999 "Sawtooth" AGP G4 450mhz system, with plenty (704 MB) of RAM, and have trouble with H.264 at high bitrates myself. I have had good results downloading the MPEG-4 version of DL.TV. It can be played at original size with nearly its full original frame rate in the QuickTime Player, or it can be played full screen using Mplayer. Mplayer seems to be a little better at squeezing video performance out of older processors. It helps to check the "Drop frames on slower machines" option in Mplayer preferences.
I will also say H.264 must be heavily optimized for G4/G5/Intel(?) because G3 machines (I tried on a 700mhz dual USB iBook) *really* have trouble even with medium bitrate H.264 files. I would also advise Mplayer with the above option for all G3 users.

Mplayer:
http://mplayerosx.sourceforge.net/
(Note carefully that the latest version is only compatible with OS X 10.4. Go back to version 2b8r4 for 10.3 (that's what I use). It is incorrectly listed as 2b9r4 at the above link, but when you download it, you will see that it is indeed 2b8r4.)

Tony, H.264 takes forever to encode, which is why it comes up last...

November 23, 2005 10:19 PM

Hmm... I doubt this is very practical to anyone else, and a huge bandwidth eater, but a nano-ized video format would be cool. I watch dl.tv on my nano through ipodlinux each week, forcing me to re-encode to uncompressed AVI.

It's a tedius process, using VirtualDub, the only way to get a video stream is through xVid, it doesn't recognize any others.

I then download the .mp3 only and covnert that to a .wav

VirtualDub then takes the xVid and .wav and forges them into an uncompressed AVI stream. Total running time is around an hour and a half, two hours with download times.

If you guys are thining about it, send me an e-mail and I can let you know the vid specs. (email in URL link above)

ok not to discount microsoft so early but i can't shake the feeling that the xbox360 will be the next dreamcast.

I was wowed in 99 when i saw the dc but shortly after i bought it, i realised it was a mistake, the graphics were good, and sometimes looked better than the ps2 but it became clear that games were just not comming out on the dc... well not enough anyway.

it was strong before the launch of the ps2 but after it just withered and died.

I see the same thing here with the x360 ... first few month having strong sales then dying off after the ps3 is released (whenever that is)
the fact is the ps3 will most likely have better third party support and better media and better specs
again the x360 can have better graphics than the ps3 in certain situations but overall i see less games on the x360 and many being better or the same on the ps3

what microsoft and sony understand it is the exclusives that win battles and for me, right now, i don't see anything on the x360 that i must get that i can get elsewere.

The reason the H.264 release is later than the MP4 is that the h.264 codec requires a ton of processing power and can take longer than the running time of the show to encode. MPEG4 is much less processor dependant and encodes very quickly.

I want a HD version encoded in XviD now!

Forget about the other versions - people can go transcode it to however low-res they want from the HD version (if it becomes availiable...).

I mean, come-on, you give us all those great advice on getting HD ready and you serve us a 480 x 360 version!? Doesn't make sense...

Posted by: eflightcentral
December 2, 2005 8:55 AM

You might not care how large an HD file size would be, but the guys paying for the bandwidth might. I would also bet that there is not a lot of requests for DL.TV in HD to justify the added expense.

What would HD add anyway? I can't see HD adding much more to the show except that with the added clarity and sharpness, you might actually be able to see the reflection of a camera in Patrick's bald spot ;)

I understand the call for more HD content, but for a 'talking heads' type show?

by transcoding WMV that HE was trying to re-encode from the WMV to another format in which case I agree - re-encoding a compressed format to another compressed format is asking for trouble ;)

Here's one idea I'll throw out there - put one high quality file out there and let everyone encode to their taste.

I do agree that the XviD seems like it could be better for the file size - or has WMV codecs gotten that much better recently? The WMV looks better in my opinion than the XviD.

I think the lesson is that no one format will please everyone and there will always be people who expect the highest quality. Watcha gonna do?! LOL

Posted by: klo
December 2, 2005 8:56 PM

Patrick, go with single format!

You mentioned:
"Hey, they're three times the size... we average 150 to 200MB per show. TWiT's doing 600. And they're doing a single format. (That is tempting"

If you scrap the other formats (WMV, MOV (H.264), M4V (iPod), MP4 (MPEG4)), then we shall enjoy a single, hi-quality version of the show approximating 700 MB :-P !
(140*5 - roughly, including XviD's current file size.)

And even if you decide you must keep WMV, the XviD version would still approximately be 560 MB - which is way better than the current version...

Loved the hdtv show! It made some things clearer as I look to upgrade from my 3 year CRT 30 inch. I'm glad you brought up FREE broadcast as the best HDTV is free. I repeat, the best HDTV is FREE! Letterman, Leno, Superbowl, NFL, Saturday Night Live. But what I like most is PBS and Jim did a disservice to it. Awesome programming in addition to the regular feed, at least in Philly. Check out Smart Travels and Nova. No need for Discovery!

This is a GREAT show. But when I open up PC Mag's site, you're in a little box off to the side. CNET is better at pushing it's video content. I think Ziff Davis is smarter and more well rounded content, but if nobody knows you're there, then who cares? Call marketing and tell them to step it up a noch.

I don't care that the H.264 version gets out later (although it is my prefered version), but it's annoying that they say it will be out when it isn't. Don't set a date on the site if you can't keep it, it's much more annoying releasing it a few days after the WMV AND after you said you would be out than just releasing it a few day after the WMV. It's Sunday and it's not out when below the header it says it will be out Friday. Not cool.

Posted by: Scott
December 12, 2005 5:12 PM

Robert, Patrick, you there?

If you guys cannot post the video in the formats you support than change the dates listed on your site. This is starting to make you look like the guys over at G4. After a while people just will stop coming back.

I like H.264 the best because it works and looks good
and most importantly for me it's usually the smallest file size. I'm still on dial up and I use a download manager to get the show, it takes me a couple of evenings to get it, because I get disconnected after two to three hours. I like the show and hope it keeps going.

Posted by: Rod
December 12, 2005 9:13 PM

Great work guys. And the size you have gotten the H.264 down to is GREAT!

Don't worry about these guys crying about it not being on Friday. Keep up the great work. Watching this and TWiT back to back was a couple of good hours of IP/TV.

BTW, thanks a lot Robert for mentioning the Sage RSS extension for Firefox. I am hooked on it! haha

December 13, 2005 11:26 AM

Well...

Looks like the H.264 version was a disaster. It's now half the size/at a lower resolution....and it looks worse than the mpeg 4 version. Not that I don't appreciate the work you guys have done to to tweak it. I guess you just gave up this week and decided to "get it out".

Oh well...better luck next time I suppose...

BTW...on the hi-def/widescreen version. I'd be HAPPY to download a high-def version using bittorrent or something (and I'd stay with the swarm to contribute bandwidth)

I kind of like the flash, and personally I think it's needed if you are going to grow as an audience lets face it, your average joe is not going to want to sit through a 150mb download just to preview a show that he, may or may not like.

Ok, you have a point... But what does it take to render WMV... Sony Vegas or even as simple as Window Crappy Movie Maker 2 can handle the task to at least get the show out. I'd personally be willing to help render if anyone asked. I just think as professionals as they are, a promise for something to come out on a certain day is what should happen. Non-geeks wouldn't stand for this; let's make IPTV as 1337 as possible and not unstable.

Patrick,
Just to give you an idea of whose been putting in their 2 cents about encoding, I'm the guy who works in a video post house in Hollywood who sent you the Serenity poster a few months back.

I worked one of the cameras on Twit Eps.#30 from the Podcast Expo in November with the Pixel Corps crew. (I'm at the end of the show when Alex introduces the crew on the shoot).

I watch show each week and you guys do a great job.

December 23, 2005 9:15 AM

"Even with the fastest cpus commercially available, the encode process is still not real time"

Warren, what are you talking about? AVI is not a codec, its a containter and has nothing to do with encoding time. Real time encoding is possible since Pentium 3 processors, I did it with my old VHS camera back in the days (full pal divx).

It may be the end of dl.tv, there were rumors about shuting it down.

Posted by: Jeff
December 23, 2005 3:21 PM

Rush.

Warren is right, his statement is a little out of context. It is not currently possible to transcode from one format to certain other codecs in real time (or faster than real time) with out special dedicated hardware.

e.g.: DVD video. MPEG-2 video is VERY host cpu intensive. With the latest round of ghz upgrades to intel cpus it's possible to encode MPEG-2 in near real time.

Video capture cards, like the one you used to transfer your videos with has a special DSP chip in it whose only reason to exist is to do that transcoding in real time.

So.. in short.. hardware realtime transcoding has existed for a LONG time. Software realtime (especially if it's multi-pass) transcoding still isn't quite there yet.

Loved the episode guys. I heard a nice big word used by patrick and I would like to hear more of them. I remember him saying the producers want him to stop, but I think the audience should be brought up to a higher level rather than the show dumbing itself down in any way. Dumbing a show down is what has happened to TSS/AOTS and it has some really bad results. Keep on geeking out, talking intelligent, and breaking nerd stereotypes!

Give me a break. If you give your 11 year old child free reign to download stuff from the internet, you will surely find that Martin Sargent is amongst the least offensive.

It is up to you as a parent to guide your child. Don't limit all available entertainment/information to the least common denominator (I don't think we should all have to watch childrens shows). The internet is not the problem it is your parenting skills. If you want to make sure your child isn't exposed to the real world, then keep them in a box with a bible and a candle.

So maybe when you heard he was gonna be on you should have done something, maybe just wait till you can dl it and fast forward. I cant even think of anything he said or did that could be worthy of Ms. Farnsworths outrage, give me a break the rest of us dont need another mother. I never got around to trying to actually burn a DVD until recently, and the software provided with my system is utterly wretched. Can you recommend a good, inexpensive (free) app for burning data to DVDs?

The system is WinXP, the DVD app on the system has escaped me at the moment, since I'm typing this at work.

I just wanted to put in my 2 cents and say that I loved seeing Martin again, and thought that his CES coverage was great.

I really hope DL.TV decides to have him on in the future. His jokes may be juvenile, but his segments really helped bring a lighter tone to the show. I love tech content, but a little humor inbetween gadget segments never hurt anybody. He was an asset to these 3 CES specials, and I hope that you don't let the opinion of the one above poster that had a problem with him sway your opinion as to whether to have him back or not. The minority that disliked his antics can simply fast forward through the segment. This lets the rest of your viewers enjoy his nonsense while those who are easily offended are left unscathed.

hi patrick

you said in dl.tv 25 that you are using final cut pro to convert the video content from dv to the different content types offered here and listened to an interview frim chuckchat.com where you said you dont like people saying your wrong about everything which i guess is people complaining about the lack of xvid ( yes i want xvid and no i dont like divx )

so here are three tool that you can use to convert dv to divx and other formats

ffmpegX
http://homepage.mac.com/major4/index.html

AutoGK
http://www.autogk.me.uk/

How to convert DV to DivX or XviD using Virtualdub
http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=244151

and as somebody that people in podcast i listen to say has "golden ears" please try ogg vorbis a bit more it sounds better for all my music and takes less space ( its sounds better then mp3 and aac to me )

mentioning ogg and flac in the show would be nice too

i hope this help

thanks for the nice show

You people crying about codecs, GET OVER IT!

It's a FREE show for god's sake. Ask politely if you need a particular codec, instead of stamping your feet like a spoilt brat.

Some people today have had it too easy with p2P and everything but the kitchen sink handed to them on a silver plate. Take take take is the new mantra for these neophites, it's actually sad.

I say, keep up the great work DLTV. And patrick; you're presentaion skills have drastically improved over the last dozen episodes, well done.

Thankyou DLTV for a great show!!!!!!

DVIator converter has ABSOLUTELY NO electronics inside, how two of you can be so wrong so often ? :/

Its the same deal as with the HDMI connector (HDMI = DVI + audio)

ADC = DVI + VGA + USB + power

H.264 or DivX?

Aaron, I've found the H.264 seems a much higher res/better quality than the DivX, although that might just be my personal opinion. I'd like to hear what the guys think about this though.

I went from 600Kb to 2Mb. Everyone with slow downloads should fix their TCP settings. Go to dslreports.com and run the Tweak Test. Analyze the results then download DrTCP to fix your settings. Most likely your RWIN is way too high and MTU is off. Then reboot and run Tweak Test again to see the improvement.

WHy not use h264 ?? K Boogie ? please name me ONE devie except the IPOD and PSP that can play h264

I will tell you its NONE thats why it sucks. NOTHING can play it !

I like divx because most anything plays it including a set top player I have. in place of that I live with mp4 at least it works. I have not tried to play it in my set top player I doubt it will work though.

I can convert these shows to divx in 20-25 minutes and thats on a 1.7g celery with 256mb ram there is no reason not to offer divx fast. if you want less formats DUMP h264 its useless since both the IPOD and PSP will play mp4 sp.

The WMV version is also utterly useless but since the tricaster outputs this anyway It makes sense to use it.

The problem with encoding it myself it is looks a lot worse after double coding it.

I want something I can play on my DVD player in my lounge room.

You've got 3 formats that will play on any PC but don't have an hour to encode to DIVX.

Why have MPEG4 AND H.264?

smaller, faster, better ... love it.

Posted by: Lardzor
February 3, 2006 8:58 AM

I love the show. I've been a fan now for a couple weeks. I prefere the AVI container for compatability with programs like VirtualDub or whatever. I also prefere the Xvid codec over DivX mainly because Xvid is open source, and I like to support that.

WMV makes me twitch. Has anyone else out there downloaded a WMV file, only to have a window pop up telling you that you have to install their ActivX ad/spyware before you can view the video? Add to that the anti-copy code and I think WMV should be avoided at all costs. I'm seeing a disturbing trend of WMV and WMA usage. These formats make it much easier to control the distribution of information. It can also coherce people with "If you really want to enjoy the media you just spent hours downloading, then you won't mind installing our special helper applet (ad/spyware), and we're so sure you'll just love it that we'll do everything humanly possible to prevent you from ever removeing it from your system."
With MS doing everything they can to get people to swap over to the WMV/WMA formats, how long will it be before Microsoft has total control over our media?

oops, looks like I went on a little rant. Sorry.

Posted by: David
February 3, 2006 4:03 PM

Patrick mentioned that they might be going back to Xvid, in one show. I have to say though H.264 is by far the cleanest format of the show. I'm an Xvid fan myself, but since I just watch DL.TV on my computer H.264 works.

Posted by: Chris Taylor
February 6, 2006 12:05 PM

HEY I like the mpeg4 its the only useful format they have now ! (wmv and h264 and ipod ONLY play on computers or ipods) that makes them pretty useless to me since I dont use a computer to watch these and I dont own an ipod.

mpeg4 (sp) xvid - divx all fine with me as I can play all of these on my portable.

h264
Posted by: 7r3ni7y
Friday, February 03, 2006 8:28 AM

smaller, faster, better ... love it.

h264 is utterly the most useless video format currently avaialble second only to RM and WMV video

NOTHING can play h264 NOTHING except computers and 5g ipods. nothing.

as long as they keep the mp4 sp file format I am happy since I get to actually watch the show :-)

keep up the swesome work guys

FYI how about an mpeg1 format ? its SUPER SUPER fast to encode to (easily 3:1 maybe 5:1 on a faster machine) and it is super High Quality compared to what your showing now AND easily converts to any other format anyone could want effortlessly and it about the same size in disk usage as the divx file you were posting (600mb per hour)

MORE advantages ? I can burn it to VCD and put it on anything pretty much and its ultra easy to also put on DVD to put on tv etc.. if your willing to use 100mb per 10min file formats like the divs file just do mpeg1. - in mpeg1 I can put something like 21 episodes on a dual layer DVD and it will be playable in a DVD player !!

mpeg1 is more than good enough quality and VERY VERY low processor demanding (a 100mhz computer can play it) and TONS of free easy to use fast software it available for messing with it.

mpeg1 is the ultimate "consumer" friendly video format. its wide open widely compatible easily converted and pretty darned good quality. (better than any of the formats you have offered so far except maybe the h264 which I have not even tried to view)

February 6, 2006 8:39 PM

Another vote for divx, Patrick emailed me a response a while back about the Divx.
"We get less than 300 downloads per episode, give or take, in the DivX/XviD formats. Out of tens of thousands of downloads, Getting that format requries us to do an extra capture and encode on top of all the other enocding. So it's kind of a labor of love... and we weren't getting much love for it. Factor in a 12-18 hour work day on the days when we have to do all the encoding and uploading... and it got dropped. Oddly enought, Scott's encoding episodes 24 to the latest episode this week, so you'll be caught up for a while.

BTW, I thought the Archos could play MPEG4?

February 13, 2006 6:56 PM

ook. I know this has been said before but I have not seen an answer.

WHAT IS WITH ALL THE DIFFERENT FORMATS!?

Most people who watch this show are more than capable of re-encoding a media file to any format they like. So what is the problem with just uploading the wmv format and making people just transcode themselvs? I download whatever hits the site fist, then re-encode for my PSP and for my wifes iPod. You can watch any of these formats with many different players on Windows, Linux, and yes of course Macintosh.

Just trying to sabe you guys some work. I know what goes into encoding all those different formats.

So my question: (please see all caps text above)

Great show!! I really miss the old days of ZDTV.

Not sure if your mistaking me for someone else ? I have never heard anyone refer to me as dr video and would not be sure why they would but I DO know this.

Being picky is not relavent. Video conversion is Nasty for ONE SHOT after that its click and go.

There source files never changes. its from the same unit same enviroment same compression engine etc.. etc..

Once they find the "right" way to get the quality video its up to the CPU to crunch it. they save this as a profile and never ever have to deal with it again.

So this would appear to be a CPU time issue since it cant in my wildest imagination be a USER intensive process. SO what are they doing that takes so long ?? Even if I do a heavy duty compression its no worse than 1:1 time issue.

Thats why I want them to describe to us the entire process from step 1 to Posting on this site so we can figure out a better way to do it. We (well the users in general) want the formats I think we should help make there lives easier to get it.

How about they just post an mpeg2 and then we convert. well then you run into the problem with bit torent how do they track the downloads of the converted file ?

Since we cant take up the workload without messing up there stats I figure we can help them reduce there work load. I dont see why they can buy 5 computers one for each format and be done ALL conversions in under 1 hours from time of initial start. ($300 computers would do the job just fine I imagine thats well within there budget)

Source video on a remote network drive all 5 machines access the file and crunch it.

When its done someone ftp's the files.

What I need is a sample SOURCE file from DL.TV so I can play with conversion methods and find the ideal means with which to do it.

SUCK-A-ME-FOOLS: DL.TV is more reliable than any girl (not that its possible) will ever be to you.

There is not way DL.TV is shutting down as if it were, why the hell would they post it in the comments section? It would be flat out on the home page.

They have problems just like we do. Their computers/servers crash just like ours. If anyone is to be scolded for this, its Microsoft for producing out of date, bugged, and unreliable OS.

FOR ALL WHO WHINE: You should try and run your own videocast/podcast and see if you can do better. Otherwise stop acting like a 2 year old.

Even though I watched it live last night, I downloaded to view fullscreen. Download speed was 185 kbits/second. YAWN... Oh well, faster than dial up! Ya think Ma Bell is jerkin' me around?

I don't have fiber to the curb. Out in the sticks all I can get is dish that is some what better the dialup at 6 X the cost. Fortunately I work at the Univ. of Wash. and I can download your show at 1.0 MB/second. I usually watch you show on the buss ride to the sticks were fiber, cable, and dls are just a dream. I did have ISDN for a while but I could not afford the $100 - $200 per month bill.

So the show that aired Tue nite is lost in the either & what's being rendered is the next-day re-enactment? Maybe it should be referred to as ep39b.
btw - I got home from work & fired up your live feed just in time for the dead mic incident. You folks need a technical difficulties slide. It could be a great opportunity for some alarming geek humor, however if mimics a BSOD or mac bomb you're probably violating inadvertant trademarks. :)

Those getting "slow" download speeds...

What seep are yougetting on the speedtest sites? (You can Google for them.)

I just discovered my inconsistant dowmload speeds were the result of the DSL servers at good old pac bell being set one speed and the line configured at another slower speed locally.

Might be worth checking if you still get slowed down pipe speeds.

All Dvorak does is whine about everything.... he's best left to writing articles and not letting anybody hear his whining voice on the Internet! His content is great... but his whining execution is a horrible turnoff! I know I don't have to ask if anybody else feels the same way...

Great. I get to see Dvorak's loud ties.

Actually, it's about time Dvorak try to USE technology rather than just trash it.

Apple moving to Windows, what a cheap way to get attention focused back to Dvorak. He's the king of dropping a loaded rumor bomb and stepping back while people feverishly debate it.

We're all fools for listening to him, but I can't stop.

Where I live in Arkansas (where Bill Clinton, the education governor, best known for raising us from 49th to 47th during his time) we do not have any broadband or DSL access. I pay $60/month for Cingular Wireless and get about 10-22kps. It is much better than the old dial-up and I am thankful for it. It takes on average about 4 hours to download the program (if nothing goes wrong). As a former Screen Savers viewer I think its still worth it. I would like to see a (non-ipod) download available much quicker than the almost 24 hours it seems to currently take. Thanks to all the staff, I know your job is not easy but don't worry the vast majority of us appreciate your efforts. I am pleased to be a part of the very beginning of something that will someday be the best way to watch television.

I see it just the opposite. I am sick of uber specialized programs. I LIKE the randomness of DL.TV I LIKE the "cast" interactions.

Its the almost the same with twit but twit is even better than dl.tv in this specific regard. its a rambled jumble of crap. but its crap from people I LIKE to hear talk about crap. (crap in a good way ie not focused except loosely on tech)

I LIKE hearing patrick robert etc.. just talk. I like hearing leo and dvorak just talk. I like hearing kevin etc.. talk.

these are people I enjoy hearing. it it got too focused some of that "personal" feel would go away and it might not be so much fun. its the reason I like the screensavers so much.

I hope I am not a minority in this regard as I really want dl.tv to succeed and prosper

Looking forward to 3 times a week :-) hint hint hey I can dream cant I :-)

Screw Quicktime and use the free, open source program called VLC. http://www.videolan.org/
I've given up the whole codec hunt since Ive been using this. And you will be able to watch you .mov file full screen to boot!

Are you installing Itunes with Quicktime because you plan to use itunes?

The reason I ask is a big peeve with Quicktime is that (Ive stopped counting after 50+) many people I come across have those two itunes exe files running in the background of their boxes even though they dont have an mp3 player or buy online because thats 'how it installed'.

One look at the QT download page shows how they do mamaged to get people to DL the bundled version instead of the Quicktime alone: they put the iTunes/Quicktime bundled free version on the left side of the screen. On the right side they have the QT 7 Pro version that you have to pay.
And guess where they put this tiny little text that says QuickTime Standalone Installer?
Right under the Pro version that you have to pay!!
That is not an accident if you know the kind of work that goes into building something like their site.
Illegal? No.
Weasely? Yes.

Then again, we know the old story: if Real did something like this, we'd crucify them. Apple fanatics I am sure will either blame the stupid users, their parents, and everyone else in between...

You guys make me sick (commentors not you guys at dltv :-)

I am sitting here smiling at my 400-900kbps download capacity and then I see you GRUMBLING over 3-7 TIMES that speed ! Wow made me sick to see that. Drool Drool Drool.

I tell you with our greedy ISP's here the USA is going to be the laughing stock of the internet age pretty darned soon !! and I pay $65 a month for this privilege of slow speed (not from you guys from comcast)

Interlacing. huh I always wondered what those annoying lines where. they were not annoying enough to bother trying to figure them out though :-) hehehe

Yeah I just wait till wednesday and friday now too. thanks for getting it out to us guys really appreciate the work you put into it. CANT WAIT till you start raking in the cash so we can have even MORE episodes :-)

Oh and as for itunes and quicktime the solutions are really quite easy

itunes - dont use it dont install it. mp3's are better with no DRM and they still work on your precious ipods :-) and in the future when the ipod killer does come out (its inevitable they cant stay on top forever) all your music will migrate to the new device while your itunes music will be in the trashcan since you can ONLY use that stuff with ipods :-)

Quicktime. under no conditions install it. its buggy and crash prone. Use Quicktime Alternative. Never a single crash and works oh so well :-)

I'm somewhat limited budget wise so have to use the lower speed DSL...so files over 100MB start to be a bit impractical...thus, most of the time, I use the Flash vers...but sometimes I'd like to save it for later viewing...video quality for me doesn't matter as much as speed/time, and any video is better than just audio...

So is there some way as Mike asked to have a lower size file?

Hi

I really love the show it's great I have been going thru the archives (seadily but slowly so i can stretch them out :D)
the filesize is ok but IMHO something in the 100mb-150mb windows would be ideal.

i live in belgium and even thou speed is nt exactly an issue (4mbit ADSL) but we have a mothly transfer limit (typicaly about 10 gig a month) after wich you get capped at 64kbit (also sux for Bittorrent)

annyway for that reason i would greatly appreciate a smaller filesize with a slightly lower res

Please supply some high def video, even just something that looks good on a lcd screen of normal size at full screen. Any one who downloads these things over night (everyone does sleep don't they?) and then watches them on a HTPC or just leans back in front of the computer would love to be able to see what you are doing in full screen - it feels like I just got w95 and windowed video. I will let you in on a secret - it is called bittorrent, I know you guys want to know how many people are watching your show but.... people are already seeding ep43 and 44 so either give us a high quality dl we can torrent to conserve your bandwidth, or be eaten by the tech you respect.
nb : you can track a torrent - I can think of at least 2 ways to record everytime someone dl's the show and wants to watch it : with out going down the soft DRM path and I am only a network engineer.

Anyway, whle I agree we should have the ability to download great high definition Divx files, it would be nice if we also have some that were smaller as well.

Divx gives the best quality per megabyte, so a 500Mb Divx for those in the new world, 100Mb for those of us in the real world?

Mike - Standard DSL should download 200mb in 12-24 minutes. For 500mb the download should be 30-60 minutes. What is the problem? You are just impatient as well as a whiner! DLTV does offer multiple files 200mb files.

Quicktime H.264 looks great if your computer has the power to decode it. High quality video, at full screen there is only minor compression blocking in the solid areas. (I have also tried mpeg4 and video iPod which are not as good.)

I never miss a show, you fill my brain with nice data. But you guys still have a long way to go. The set is crappy, the quality of the DIVX;) encoding is hit or miss (aka crappy) The graphics & camera work is well crappy. But yeah it's still early & keep up the good work.

Dvix is looking better than H.264 now. All thats needed now is Deinterlaceing. For now I guess i'll just download both until I decide what to stick with.

Does anybody know how to watch the streaming version of the show in fullscreen mode? The flashplayer which they use doesn't seem to have a function for it (or I can't find it)

Posted by: Krado
April 4, 2006 10:45 AM

Filip: usually an SWF file can be gotten from your brower cache, saved to a folder like MyDocs and drag 'n' dropped onto an IE window. It will play full screen if you hit F11. However, DL.TV doesn't seem to do the standard SWF because I couldn't get this to work last night when I tried.

As far as the show streaming live via WMP you can right click on the window and choose, Zoom > fullscreen.

2 things:

First, It is "Y'all" not "Ya'll"

Second, since you are speaking to a group of us the correct term would be "All Y'all", since it is plural.

On a serious note, I didn't notive since I just download the episodes manually. Keep 'em coming.

I train a lot of people to present on TV and as you've both relaxed into the show I've enjoyed watching you more and more. Pacy fun anarchic. Great. It really is so refreshing, compared to most TV presenting, which is dull dreary and samey.

As the show has progressed and I've got to know you better, it's your opinions I like hearing, rather than what a broadcaster would normally consider "appropriate". Well done.

If possible could you guys see if there is any noticable PQ difference between it outputting 1080i & 720p on a true 1080p monitor? I know some monitors out there are still not able to handle true 1080p@60 but my cheopo sub $2k 37" Sceptre LCD can handle a 1080p input and I'm thinking about getting this unit.

I am getting tired reading about this internal errors. Would it be impossible just to have a Website where I could see "Episode 'xyz'/format/download" instead of heaving to go through pages of less interesting things? ie. where are the "old episodes" that didn-t make it to the "older Episodes" link?

Why do I have to "know" via RSS that the latest episode streamed yesterday but the downloads will be avaliable two days later - instead of giving me the dl-info at the time, when it-s actually ready???

Why is the H.264 version smaller than the video ipod version? Aren't they both using H.264 for the video? How is it possible that a lower res version is bigger in file size?

Posted by: inboxnews

H.264 requires more cpu cycles which your ipod does not have. H.264 .mov encoding is way more complex, providing a smaller file size and better picture.

I believe Patrick means the next episode (59) will air on Tuesday and the current episode (58) will be avaible to download today (05.05.06)

Hey just wanted to say that my Dowload speed of the H.264 was 2.2MB/s, downloaded in under 1min 20 sec.

So... when should we expect HD versions of DL.TV? I mean if you start using Bittorrent for the HD downloads, I wouldn't mind downloading 2GB of HD quality DL.TV. Are we going have to wait like we are waiting for Windows Vista?

We're redecorating the studio, so today's show is short 'n sweet!

Well the DivX is no longer humongous at 350Mb. Did you guys improve encoding methods without sacrificing imaging quality?

Also looking foward to another 60 episodes. (Maybe in HD too?)

350MB was a bit much. I know it was the best quality version they offer, but I'm not sure everyone is looking for broadcast quality. It would seem they have lowered the bitrate to a more reasonable level. It may have also been shorter than a typical 350MB show. I'm also very pleased to see (or not see) aliasing issues seem to have vanished. No more mixing fields from two different frames WOO HOO!. Looks very nice guys, keep up the good work.

It seems that every time I try to download dl.tv using iTunes, the video always gets gut off. usually around the halfway point. I get an application error and it shuts down the whole iTunes program, then I replay the video and it happens again in the same location. Like I said, it pretty much happens on every episode. Do you know why this happens?

Keep up the good work,

PHIL

AS KUNAL SAID THE AUDIO CUTS OUT ON THE H264 FILE, YOU SHOULD REMOVE IT AND REDO IT BEFORE MORE PEOPLE WASTE THEIR TIME DOWNLOADING IT........NOT THAT I AM UPSET OR ANYTHING

Like others that have already posted, I too lose audio at 14:06. There is one second of audio at 17:58 then nothing else that I can find.

I have played back the file using Quicktime Alternative player and VideoLan Client media player (v0.8.4a).

The H264 file loses audio completely at 14:06. Are all the other files OK?

Please post here when the file is replaced... :-(

Great Caesar's Ghost, I may or may not live under juristiction of the DMCA, but it pains me to see Patrick and Heron shy away from these questions. What teh hell is this world coming to??? anyway, it sounds like you need "videohelp" of some sort. I might have read about it in a comic book called "doom9" or something.

Actually, I usually DON'T browse this board 'cause most of the posters are a-holes with very LITTLE patience...

and you wanna subject an employee to that!?!

Always the cry-babies "screaming" Oh, it's 2 seconds late, kill someone!

Or, as in the case of today, it's not live UNTIL the file finish's rendering and get posted to the server and the php/etc. updated...
can these morons wait a few hours and try again?..
obviously NOT!

For you idiots I'm talkin' about, don't bother posting a reply.
I won't be looking again, 'cause I GOT my file
