DL.TV is at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas! We've got tons of coverage on all the new gadgets: from 100 inch televisions to the latest phones, hardware antivirus, video devices, and a lot more.

Here's the deets:

  • Last night Bill Gates kicked-off CES with his keynote speech: Vista's content handling, and integrating entertainment with web browsing is the focus.
  • HD-DVD is shipping soon--we'll see content and players within weeks! Toshiba's HD-A1 will sell for $499, and is backwards compatible with DVDs and CDs, too.
  • The biggest TVs ever...well, the biggest prototypes at least. We check out 82 and 84 inch LCDs from Sony and Samsung, respectively, and a huge 103 inch plasma from Panasonic.
  • Motorola has a ton of new products: the greatly improved ROKR E2, the MINI bluetooth headset, Motorola's iRadio service, and the latest iteration of the RAZR (V3i). We got to play with all of them.
  • Palm ditches their native OS with their latest handheld--the Treo 700w. The Windows Mobile device is the first to use the EV-DO network. Could this mean the end of the Palm OS?
  • We set Martin Sargent loose on the floor of CES, and he came back with a bunch of weird, entertaining stuff--including the Wow Wee Alive Chimpanzee, a USB coffee warmer, the Loc8tor, and much more.
  • Pentax has a couple of new cameras that happen to be cool enough for our show. The Optio A10 ($350) has 8MPs and shake reduction, while the E10 ($200) gives budget shoppers a 2.4" LCD and 6MPs.
  • Sony's revolutionary eBook reader uses a "paper like display" that only uses power when you change pages. Plus, they've got loads of publisher support with Random House, Penguin-Putnam, and other big name publishers all coming on board. We just hope Sony will lay off the restrictive DRM...

  • What happens when you put a firewall, intrusion detection, a spyware killer, anti-virus, and a slew of other security features in an auto-updating box? D-Link's SecureSpot ($99.95) does it all, and we can't wait to put it through its paces.

I start the video in media player and it stops in the middle of playback/ also are you trying to make me watch the commercials by killing the fast forward and position controls. hmm Did you know I go back to those commercials to review them, but now I have to watch your speel first before I can review what I was interested in. Disabling my position controls is a nasty thing to do to try to make me watch commercials. Next you will probably start messing with my volume controls too hmmm. If you keep doing this kind of stupid stuff I will go somewhere else to get my tech fix.

Oh man my sides hurt after that Martin Sargent segment, is he going to be on the next two CES shows too?

Very nice show, very cool products everything seems to be going multimedia, music phones, portable video players, portable digital books, pretty soon the only reason you would need a pc is to move stuff onto your portable devices.

OK I see you killed the indexing in the WMV files. I'm sorry but this really made me mad for about 2 seconds. Guess I will have to reindex the file and start over to get that feeling of full control. If this was an attempt to force viewers to "watch the commercials," I understand. But come on, give your viewers the freedom of choice. Sometimes I just want to get a heads up on the tech, and other times I watch in a more relaxed state of viewing, and do not care if you slip me a commercial or two. So please do not forget to index your video files DL.tv Thanks.

Is the quicktime broken?
mplayer says "missing header (moov/cmov) chunk!
then it also says:
"TiVo file format detected."
but that doesnt sound right..
Anyway, why is everyone making such a fuss about H264 encoding speed? Just use mencoder/x264, once you have worked out the quantizer value you can use it for all future episodes. I usually use something like that:
mencoder -cache 5000 -ovc x264 -oac copy \
-x264encopts b_pyramid \
-x264encopts qcomp=0.8 \
-x264encopts qp_constant=23 \
-o output.avi input.avi
I'm sure you manage to put the video stream in a mp4 container using some other tool. I usually use an ogm container so I stick to ogmmerge.

Amazing...

50 CEOs+50 TV/Movie Stars+100,000HDTVs(no one can afford)+1,000,000 Gadgets(no one can use) still != 1 Steve Jobs keynote at MacWorld.

Thanks for the coverage though

As they've said on the show many times some formats take longer to process than others. It'll be up on the site once the encoding is completed. If you want it faster buy them some more hardware.

Im really not a big fan of gadget shows and such sites but Heron and Norton really do a great job and have managed to capture my interest so I can surf right through this special event and wait for the two amigos back in the studio.

Im fine tuning the amount of shows I can watch online nowawadays and Ill be using more and more dl.tv to keep me up to date in 2006.

The best of luck to you all in the new year in trying to keep us entertained and informed. Heron's self deprecating humour and physical cues and ticks blend perfectly with Norton's smart bubba personna. And you know what? The ads are not as annoying as I used to find them

Amoul solo my friends,

Oh yeah, ...the server FUD ads are funny.
Most people who watch DL.tv are tech savvy enough to see them like we now view those Reefer Madness videos from 70 years ago.
I know you gotta pay the bills but dont tell me that it doesnt leave you a dirty taste in your mouth?

Martin Sargent was never entertaining or funny on any kind of level ever. I would rather get VD then watch him in any video. Really I would. I'm not joking, I would.

BITCH and MOAN and WHINE!!!
"I don't see a new podcast .... I can't find (fill in the blank) .... Well gee, here it is 2 days after the holiday and I can't find ....",
KNOCK IT THE F$#@K OFF!!!!

The crew busts ass to get IPTV working, and all YOU can do is complain....
If SOMETHING is broken, DON'T COMPLAIN, e-mail them with! a! report! of! what! doesn't! work!!!, stupid!, with a FULL report.

When the Crew is on Holiday, SHUT UP and let them enjoy!

"Where's the ____?" Look STUPID!, Patrick has explained, MANY TIMES, that certain types of file TAKE TIME! Even if DL.TV had the worlds biggest super-computer, IT WOULD STILL TAKE TIME!
Now!, just shut-up and WAIT for it to be posted!

Gee-zus Creerist!, you'd think Geeks, having been jumped on most of their lives, would have learned a LITTLE patience and courtesy!

I got the mp4 version to work on my pocket pc. It does not like the wmv. Please don't stop offering mp4. Great show. I will have to encode then copy it instead of just using the pocket pc to download and play.

"I'm sure you manage to put the video stream in a mp4 container using some other tool."

GPAC's MP4Box.

I just don't understand why they have problems with all the encoding (xvid....) stuff anyway. It's dead easy nowadays (even the command line tools). Just spend some time reading the doom9 forums an you won't have any problems at all.

IT'S NOT THAT HARD!

"Gee-zus Creerist!, you'd think Geeks, having been jumped on most of their lives, would have learned a LITTLE patience and courtesy!" ... like the patience and courtesy that you obviously display in your post.

Cut down on the Red Bull Tod. You seem a little impatient.
