Tuesday January 17, 2006

Episode 27 of DL.TV streamed live at 4pm PST (12am GMT), this Tuesday, January 17th.

Here's the deets:

  • In the news: 'DVD Jon' declares intent to crack next-gen DVDs. Given his track record, the question isn't "Can he do it?" but "How long will it take?"

  • Microsoft shipped its first Vista security patch, for beta testers of the new Windows OS; the first of many, we expect.

  • And, Windows XP Service Pack 3 gets packed into a 2007 release. Hey, we're just happy to get a vague release date.

  • The Fatal1ty 1010: gamer mouse extraordinaire, or one too many Fatal1ty branded products? Jason Cross reviews the smallish, $49, offering from Creative.

  • Viewer question: Jason asks "Should I go with a Mac or PC for 'prosumer' video editing? I've only got $1200-$1400 to spend."
  • Answer: It depends on what video editing software you'll use--which, FYI, could cost as much as the hardware! In either case, make sure you've got a fast CPU, and plenty of RAM.

  • Robert reveals the hidden secrets of his new gaming PC--for the first time on non-network television!

  • A brief history of Linux (oops, we mean GNU/Linux), along with our reccos for Linux bundles and where to grab open source software.

  • Plus, more viewer questions, commentary and escalating drama to come. Stay connected.

Yeah - this one is pretty much unwatchable. I have to assume it's on their end (lack of bandwidth at server).

Same problems here. Good to know I'm not the only one.

Anyway, I've got great connection speed at the office, so I'll just download this one tomorrow...

Ok guys, I'm noticing an increasing trend of sillyness with a lack of tech. If it takes a while to get something up on the web, move on to the next segment until you have it up and going, don't waste wire time. I'm really sorry to say that robert has very little hosting skills and desperately needs to work on talking to the camera. Try better on thursday guys!

Okay Rob has always been in the lab and not infront of a cam but he has more skills and witt about himself to proud and brings the true ying/yang effect.

Pat sees potential in Rob that is why he picked Rob as cohost. I would and if I was ever doing something like this I would get someone I know and trust personally over paper knowledge.

you see they are growing and if you are use to seeing Professinal TV stick with TV that comes on your Set and shut the heck up about it.

The show is great and I admire someone that has an Idea that goes against the "corporation mindset on how we the indiviuals watch tv" verses the Open minded Freedom of choice that Humanity has from the Day birth.

This is Great to see a Technology Corporation going against the so called Norm of "Corporation" and Making themselves Independent from what "corporation" wants companies to be and to do and how they suppose to project themselves.

Thanks for the Shows Pat, Rob, and the Crew...

LavaHot, they aren't on a schedule here, so what does it matter if they spend a few extra seconds finding a link? It's not like live national TV where they have a schedule for when they have to go to a commercial...

Hmm, did the show already aired?, The site doesn't mention when it airs in Eastern Time, I always assume the show always starts at 9pm EST, Did they changed the time it's on now?

Yo guys. Are you live tonight, because I don't see the link to watch the scream?

Could You Guys Please try to get a WMV format done before 10 so i can watch on my commuite home, if not it's all good. Keep you the good work.

Thanks Jukey. I was already to go to watch. They didn't put a link to watch it. They should write Eastern time on the site for us.

That's the problem with pro TV, it doesn't exist anymore. You literally cannot get tech programming in this or any decent format on TV. (Thanks G4, Comcast, Paul Allen, and Yoko.)

Granted, he isn't nearly as camera shy as Dan Huard, but Robert DOES have a problem with leading the camera. While I'm certain that he has a plethera of knowledge pertaining to HD and video as a whole, he just lacks what it is to be a great tv host. Also, both Pat and he have the uncanny ability to go off topic at the drop of a hat.

After 27 episodes DLTV still often meanders, nay, wanders through the show. Often it seems like the show is over before it starts.

One thing I briefly remember when the show premiered was an invitation for viewers to provide tech related content. Hence the "by tech fans" line.

Almost any way you look at it, DLTV is still in the process of developing itself. I mean its not like I'll stop watching, I just want them to take themselves a little more seriously, and add more content.

"if you guys dont like the way they run it... stop watching."

Is that sort of like "My country, love it or leave it"? Is there no room for criticism? No room for suggestions?

I think what LavaHot posted is pretty much constructive criticism (the second post a little more than the first). And I'm pretty sure that Patrick, Robert, and the rest of the DL.TV crew appreciate insightful viewer opinion. Not only does it help them improve this fledgling show, but I'm sure it's a lot more helpful than getting pages and pages of incessant "I want Xvid" emails.

The fact is that traditional broadcast/cable TV has the benefit of strict programming schedules and commercial placement. While this sometimes means that a really great segment is cut short, it does create an environment where writers/hosts/ect pay more attention to pacing and time. When you're allowed to ramble on forever, chances are you'll probably forget to focus on some important topic you meant to mention. But if you know that you'll only have 5 minutes to present your information, you'll be certain to focus on the most important things, and will have your ducks in a row, so to speak.

"You know, these guys really take the feedback to heart, it's a shame they have to filter through so much rubbishy "advice"."

You know, Ness, Patrick and the rest of this crew all have traditional TV backgrounds. They're all professionals. And like I said, I think they probably appreciate some thought-out opinions, even if they aren't all positive. Ther'e absolutely nothing wrong with saying "Hey, it's great the DL.TV is around, but I see room for improvement." Especially if you have some ideas as to what could be improved. If they take their jobs seriously (and I know they do, since for some of them, like Patrick, this is their main paycheck), then they want to be the best that they can be. And no one can improve in a vacuum. Constructive criticism is a whole lot more helpful than "rubbish" like "If DL.TV is a waste of your wire time, go do something else."

I love the fact that some of my TechTV favorites are back doing a new show. But I won't shy away from saying it's flawed (or at least still growing), just like I hope people would do the same for me.

Hilarious AND informative installment once again. I don't mind the cookyness and off script stuff (it's one of the reasons the show's so great), but I do now understand why Patrick does most of the talking :D leave Robert alone for a while and crazy stuff will happen. But hey, it was funny, so rock on!

Robert and Patrick are professionals? Did you find that on the interweb? How do I get to the interweb? I'm sorry to say I have very little interweb skills, sensei.

I think Rob is doing a great job, he's going blind in the name of HD advocacy for gosh sake (joke). It's a relaxed, easy-going kind of show and fun to watch, and Robert contributes to that, big time. If DL.TV is a waste of your wire time, go do something else. Any questions?

You know, these guys really take the feedback to heart, it's a shame they have to filter through so much rubbishy "advice".
