Episode 2 was great!! There were so many classic Patrick moments in the episode I can't hardly stand it. The only thing the show is missing is a touch of Fooo...Where is the Foo man? I have an idea, he can come on the show to read the web URL and you can make fun of him. Or you could have a "Foo Minute" before the break to anwer FooTastic questions..

Great to see you back in action Patrick..

You MUST wear the man skirt next episode...

Come on guys, studio TV 101 if you're doing a studio shoot with multiple cameras you got to match the cameras up. At the very least you can white balance them all the same way if you don't have the right chip chart thing. The color shift between the 3 cameras was driving nuts. I love my IPTV but until someone improves the production value the masses will not watch.

yes... we like our open-source mpeg4. xvid is pretty nice and the encoder is fast. it doesn't matter so much at the client end, but a lot of people prefer it for encoding.

where's the downloadable file? normally, how long does it take to get up? i'd think it takes at least a day, but the main screen turn on said "all your base are belong to us." j/king.

what the main screen said was that they were done recording, and it'd be up in "just a few minutes," or something like that. i knew it couldn't be true.

so, normally, how long?

It looks like the 20MB+ audio track is now included in the Xvid download. If you all ever have problems again, try using Gspot. It will save you alot of time trouble shooting (so you won't prematurely start re-installing codecs or running numerous video clients to see if it works).

October 20, 2005 1:56 AM

It probably doesn't make difference for the WiMP stream, but when viewing it in H.264, it's quite obvious that recording is done in an interlaced format. Is there any way you guys can get rid of the interlacing? Pat and Rob both like to gesture with their hands while they're talking, and that's great, but the interlacing makes it look really ugly and distracting.

Other than that, great show. Keep up the good work.

Excellent show. Im really not a fan of HDTV (still use a small black and white above my computer) but Heron has grown on me. Always interesting and great delivery.

Good think Louerbeck is hoped up on "reds, vitamin C and cocaine", taht sure was a lot of info in a such a short segment. And just like when Bill Walton is doing the NBA, you know Jim is gonna do a Dead reference durign the show ;-)

I donwloaded my DLTV from Itunes - I noticed that the MPEG-4 bit rate was dropped from 192kpbs in episode 8 to 128Kbps now in episode 10.

If anybody is listening to these comments - please go back to the hi-res format @ 192Kbps.

Another great show guys. I appreciate the obvious hard work you guys put into the shows.

Will you still be offering the XviD version? This open source codec is used by a few players across many platforms. I like to take your shows with my on my Palm and watch with TCPMP.

MPEG4 would also work if it were encoded with anything other than AAC audio.

Not complaining though - I know how much time it takes to encode these things.

I agree with eflightcentral, it would be nice to have a Xvid or mpeg4 version because a lot more devices support this: I could put it on my zodiac with TCMP and if I archive them on a CDR I can watch in in my DVD player on the TV (I live in europe where most dvd players support Divx & Xvid).

Well thanks for makeing an IPOD video feed for itunes, but some of us don't have ipods but we would still like to have xml feeds for other formats.

I for one would like a feed for the windows format. Right now I download the windows version manually each time, and then copy it over to my snapstream TV PVR software and watch you guys on my TV. the software can't play the h.264 video, it only knows mp2, avi, and wmv.

It would be nice if I could set up ipodder to automatically download the windows video (from a feed) and put it directly in my pvr's video folder and that way I would never miss an episode or have to manually download it again.

Please????

October 27, 2005 8:23 PM

Thanks for the XviD format! Much appreciated. Now I can take the latest show on the road with me!!

For those wanting a WMV version - windows media player can handle the XviD format - the codec is free and the files are typically smaller for similar quality.

It really sucks that there are so many formats out now....

Keep up the great work guys!

You need a pro audio mix person to tell you guys when you make mistakes like putting the LAV mic up under Patrick's Chin on his mock turtle collar. His audio was muffled and quite difficult to understand. You also want to roll off the low end so the audio so it becomes more intelligible. Remember you are providing an information program not a Music or Game experience. The audio should be equalized for maximum intelligibility not maximum frequency response. The Lav Mics work best Mid Chest and pointed up at the mouth. Not Under the chin and pointing down...

...of suggestioning a graphics card that won't work on a system that can't use it?

On of the emails was about a guy that had a MX440 and couldn't play F.E.A.R. so Pat started suggestiong other cards. One of the suggested cards was the GeForce 6800GS. The problem with that is that the only 6800GS's I've found are all PCI-Express. Now unless some crazed graphics maker made a GeForce MX440 as not only AGP but for some strange reason PCI-Express, suggestioning a PCI-Express card to someone that obviously has a AGP doesn't do much good.

I've got a AGP and cannot afford to get a new motherboard and CPU just yet, but I would like to get a 6800 for my current system. However if I can get a 6800GS AGP for a bit more I would love that. It's too bad it's not going to happen, because I just can't see anyone making and new AGP cards any more.

Call me old fashioned but I like to watch my TV shows on TV. With XVID I can transfer the DLTV files to a 1 GB compact flash card, which in turn fits into my LG DVD player (with DivX, XVid). I can watch the entire show on my TV on this player reading from flash memory, very cool I think!

Can i do that with H264? Not yet.
Can i do that with WMV? No.
Can i do that with MP4? Not this MP4.
you get the idea.

Thanks again for the XVid.

No, back when (not so long ago in the scheme of things) it was ZDNetTV and it was good. Very good. Excellent, actually. The peak of tech related broadcasting. Before that, there was the 1-hour C|Net TV but that was a pale forshadowing of the blossoming forthcoming. (Ugh, bad english.)

But Mr. Allen tried to change things which hurt some, then sold things, which really blew the whole shlemeil down a hole.

Market share for the target audience went from good and growning to bad and failing. I mean, who really cares about those teenie-boppers that G4 targets anyway?

If you want good tech-related info and you want to reach a broader audience than what they reach now, you still have to go to TV. But as it becomes easier to reach those curious enough to get to places like this, especially when the default home tv/entertainment system has a direct link to the internet, then we'll again reach the potential that ZDNetTV had and by then the initial audience will be much bigger than it was back then too, even including non-target audiences and thus expanding the potential target audience.

I hope not considering that it is the only version of the feed that easily transcodes to 320x240(15fps,DiVX) using the free version of PocketDiVx Encoder to make the file a more suitable size for fitting on my Pocket PC.

December 23, 2005 2:10 AM

If I were using the equipment I have at work (a Digital Rapids with a SD/HD capture card, Dual Xeon CPUs, a gig of ram and a terabyte array) I might be able to do a real time capture and encoding of a 480x360 wmv9 file. In other words, say a 40 minute show would take about 40 minutes plus change.

If I have to render the same show from an .avi file, it could take a hour or 2 on the Digital Rapids box. The longer the show and higher the resolution, the longer the wait. If I were use one of the single P4 3 ghz systems we have here, with Cleaner 5. to render a wmv file from an avi file may take few hours.

FYI, the Digital Rapids system costs over $20,000 with the options currently in it. The P4 box on the other hand cost maybe a tad over $600. I have 1 Digital Rapids system, 2-P4 system and a AMD Opertron box.

Even with the fastest cpus commercially available, the encode process is still not real time. Imagine how long it takes to do the high res H.264 Quicktime. It's click the save button, take 2 aspirin and call me in the morning.

TV on the Internet is still an adventure. The quality is heck of a lot better than the first webcam videos from the Screensavers days. I'll get better sooner than later.

Posted by: Lord_Macross
December 23, 2005 12:40 PM

Ok, yeah this is really starting to sound whiny, I mean it may be polite whiny, (which surprises me when compared to most sites) but I am a patient man, I figure something must of happened. (encoder crash, a windblows bug, the fact that they still don't use macs for this) but have patience people. I agree with the fact that it is odd that it still hasn't come out yet, but I'm certain that they are still on it at this very moment and won't be much longer before it is released.

December 24, 2005 6:06 PM

this is rediculous, not the encoding, but you guys. If you are seriously so addicted to DL.TV that you are pissed at just a bit slow encoding, GET HELP.

It doesn't NEED to be any specific format to watch, if you want H.264, get it later and watch another format currently. Just get over it and watch it.

Do they really need to update their page every few hours? No, not at all. It'll be done when it's done, telling them to update their site every 2 seconds is only going to slow the process.

And so, in conclusion, STOP WHINING AND JUST WATCH IT. They don't have underpants gnomes come in and encode it for them (although that is a good idea), it's all them, and with everyone wanting smaller size and higher res, it takes some experimenting to get it good... and time is part of experimenting... so basically, b1tch at people who want different formats, that's what is truly slowing this down

Posted by: sickodis

Why not just drop H.264. that way we would have nothing to complain about and we wouldn't be setting oursevles up for a let down every week.

Like episode 24, episode 25 WMV file also has the audio progresively going out of sync with the video as it gets further along.

Does anyone not notices this? Are you paying close enough attention. :)

Other WMV files from other sources, including earlier DL.TV WMV episodes play without the audio getting out of sync, why all of a sudden?

The WMV file craps out at about 10 minutes in, tried playing with Windows media, media classic, and VLC does the same with all, downloading MP4 version now, hope it doesnt do the same.

Of course you could just upload the raw MPEG and let us encode to whatever we want. haha

I have to admit, I'm starting to get frustrated with the whole xvid/divx thing. Okay, I'm not a big encoder myself, but people out there are doing it on a consistent basis who have a lot less money and personnel. I tried being patient for a few months while they worked it all out, now it's just weird. I don't get it. Whatever.

"Has anyone else out there downloaded a WMV file, only to have a window pop up telling you that you have to install their ActivX ad/spyware before you can view the video?"

Uh, no, I've never seen that before. I prefer WMV because it streams well and I don't have to download anything to my computer. It's not like they only provide WMV, there are a variety of formats they offer to allow the "distribution of information"

Man, first you've dropped XviD, and now, you've also dropped DivX?

What happened?

Posted by: Pat
February 3, 2006 12:08 PM

Personally, I'd just use an mpeg2 source and autogk.

Set the output to a 175mb or 350mb divx/xvid file, and it'd look really good. Besides, it requires little effort on anyone's part, as the program figures out the appopriate bitrate itself.

February 3, 2006 5:22 PM

This week's wmv is 640x480. It appears to have some minor interlacing issues (on like the full screen camera pans at the beginning) other than that though, it looks great.

I'm guessing this is why the divx was dumped. It was 640x480 and bigger.

So for anyone like me who the h.264 is too cpu intensive, this great.

I prefer XviD because I don't have to do anything to watch the show on my iPaq. DivX works but not as well. I guess I will have to go back to downloading the WMV and then converting it to XviD using VirtualDub. :( Thanks for the show. Keep up the great work and don't give up on XviD!

February 8, 2006 10:30 AM

For Patrick-

Please bring back the Xvid (or at least Divx) so that I can watch these on TV.

You shouldn't have to do an "extra capture and encode" to get to these formats - what is your workflow? Let me know and I'll troubleshoot it for you. I guarantee there's an easy solution to get to these formats.

Also, deinterlace, deinterlace, deinterlace. Again, I can show you how.

Much love for the content though. Just please don't shut out those of us who prefer supporting open source formats.

I agree that the Divx/Xvid download #'s are swayed by the fact that these versions are often days (dare I say even weeks) behind the other versions. I imagine that a lot of folk do like I do - download whatever version is up first and convert to Xvid or Divx. That's what I usually end up doing.

At the end of the day, the show is free, and you guys do a great job. Let me fix your workflow.

Christ.

Good job guys, keep up the good work, and for the record, it was a damned fine show all the way around. I watch to HEAR nerds talking about technology, and I don't care what you cover as long as you keep covering it. Good work.

Patrick, What happened to "another fine blended edition..." ? You were so excited about Windows Vista, you forgot to properly open the show and look what happened!

For a fine blend you should showcase the Mac at least once in a while. Maybe OSX 101 as there are people out there who still think Macs can't use a two button mouse. How about forcing Robert to use a Mac for two weeks and report in. He can play his games on an Xbox if he gets Microsoft withdrawal. It would clue him in as to where all that "Vista Cool Guy" interface came from.

Its obvious that most of you have not worked in large corporate environments. The reason for the demotion of wmv encoding in favour of apple first is money.Apple tells ZD to push Apple and you will see more ad revenue.Other scenarios:
ZD and Microsoft have a falling out over billing ? Ad placements and # of ads booked? The point being is that you will never know the truth, you will always receive bland corporate double speak.

I have a G5 Powermac. I watch ABC, CBS, CNN, and a ton of other media on the Mac. I have Windows Media 9, and Flip4Mac. I have two kinds of failure with two kinds of sites: one, with the LA Times, and this player, I get a complaint about the URL. Everything comes up, and seems ready to go, and then a dialog about the address that can't be found.

The other is MSNBC, which has this DirectX player, I guess, because it comes up and informs me that I have the wrong OS, and I should download Windows. On my computer, this woud amount to 2 or 3 gigs of dead weight. On yours? Same thing.

I understand MSNBC. This is the way MS has always worked: take a public format, make it proprietary, and then only allow its customer to access it. It's called monopoly. But DLTV? Why? Aren't you trying to get across to all users, no matter the OS? And if you must use WMV, there are tons of sites that enable me to view Windows Media with no problems. Are you telling me you don't have any good programmers?

Also, please keep up the .wmv format files. With Media Center, on my 37" Sharp LCD, butt firmly planted in my recliner and MS remote in hand, it looks just as good as H.264 and it much more convenient than mousing on my knee

i love that.. complaits about 700kbps+ speeds

Hate to see what the complaints would be like when you live in an area where political, distance and economical situations mean that you're stuck on 512/128 and where cable was (until recently, and in the such small areas that it's offered) running at 2mbps/128...

anyway, good show, and i'm getting fast speeds on the run-of-the-mill 512/128 DSL....

*grumble* budget 768 my ass.. when your budget plans are 256/64 (and top speed for ADSL1 is 1.5mbit), then you can complain *grumble*

Don't get me wrong - I love it! But I really feel sorry for those:

Hi,

Great show. You guys are entertaining to watch. Why are the DIVX downloads always so large? I like watching the show on my divx player (as do a lot of people) and like to fit 2-3 shows on a CD. Also, it seems like divx /xvid doesn't get the respect that the other codecs get (i.e. no divx file for Cranky Geeks). I would like DIVX would be the FIRST format you encode to and not the last or just an after thought.

Shut down your machine, shut down the router (if any), shut down your cable/dsl modem. After about a minute or two start it all back up in this order: Modem, Router, PC/Mac. Sometimes I get ridiculously low speeds and have to do this. It usually always works. It's called power cycling. This guy explains it here: http://schmail.com/dslmon/

Good luck! ¶=0)

As usual, more erroneous information about lossy audio codecs on the show. The file CAN also be a wma pro file. Using dbpoweramp, for example, one can encode with wma pro instead of wma standard. WMA pro is not supported on any portable music player (yet), but may get more support once Vista goes golden. And it is MUCH better than wma standard. As for the formats, I just like XviD/DivX because they both work on pretty much everything I have - My DVD player, my PDA, my computer (Linux and Windows!).

None of the other formats even come close to that level of compatibility.

That said, MPEG4 (REAL MPEG4!! Not H.264 or some freaky not-quite-MPEG4!) is the next most compatible format.
Theora I wouldn't mind either, but this is more for idealogical rather than practical reasons ;)

If it's just me I'll shut up.

Worthless.

Went to apples pages on bootcamp...Lame!

Just buy a cheap pc.
Just buy a cheap Mac.

It's far cooler to have more then one machine sitting
in your space.

I got 6 pc's and 4 macs running in my space they are all networked together.

all this running in my home office.

It looks like the people at apple are bored and need to get out of the office.

or maybe it's brain cells melting at apple, I dont know I give up with apple

Ever see those commercials about how boredom is a sad thing.

Then you guys at DL give it press time,SAD SO SAD.

Hey guy, I really enjoyed the first intro where Pat may have said the word sh*t. That's real live TV. I wish you would have left that part in the download.

Pat you seemed upset with yourself and the comment about Robert and ???? (I don't remember the name) being the only good things about your show. I think ALL of you are doing a great job! Keep you chin up.

Thanks for another great show!

Yes I've noticed the same problem as Nathan described, black aren't black at all, not even close. I believe this is the 3rd if not 2nd times it's happening.

Besides that issue the show is really good. Keep up the good work robert and patrick ! and of course people behind the scenes.

May 19, 2006 10:44 AM

I just tried downloading the show (Episode 62) in WMV format and only got ONE-BYTE! So I tried downloading the MOV format and again only get a ONE BYTE FILE! No matter which format I try downloading I only get a ONE-BYTE FILE! For the WMV format it's not even close to the 218-MEGA-BYTE file which is posted as the size. What gives? (Yes, I have cable high-speed internet access supposibly able to go 3MBps although it usually only downloads around 700KBps). Sounds like a "server" blew up or the new rendering rig took a dump... (AGAIN!)...

You guys are making it so hard to keep supporting the show. I really enjoy the show, however, a show for geeks by geeks who can't get things right. . .I don't know. Patrick, I hope you're reading this! First, I can never watch the show live for whatever reason, and now I can't even find a link that works! Can't you just give your DivX encode the file extension of the container format the media uses? It's an AVI file damnit! I just rename them to avi so they work with programs like VirtualDub ect.

By the way, Great show.

Hey guys,
I always end up having to download your .mp3 files to consume the show, despite playing them on a windows mobile 2003 device.

I would love if you could put up a low res (320x240) version of the wmv to download, it takes way too long to transcode it in the morning before work. You used to have one, and it rocked, but now you don't.

I'm sure I'm probably not the only person in this situation, although it seems to me that every day I see less and less pda's around.
Thanks.

This is the email I sent them:

You already have a widescreen version. Kinda.

If you have a widescreen display and want to watch it in the entire
screen all you have to do is this:

1. Open with Media Player Classic
2. Click 'View'
3. Scroll to 'Video Frame'
4. Select 'Touch Window From Outside'

Now when you full screen the video it will use the whole screen.

Also, it doesn't stretch either. It basically clips the top and bottom a little.

You are talking about using RG6 (TV Coax) for moving a 2.4 GHz WiFi signal over. 2 things it is not a matter of leaking, hey you can use a quad-shield to fix that, but TV cables are 75 ohms and you need 50 ohm cables to keep the resistance in the antenna on the wifi AP or Client the same, otherwise you are going to burn out your radio because the difference in resistance.

Doin' great guys! :D
Does this mean you've figured out a more 'streamlined' way of doing things? Or are you just putting in overtime? (I hope it's the former!!)

Either way, great job getting them out so quickly! ;)
(And by them I mean my beloved AVI ;))

I do second some of the concerns about the AVI's size 'tho; It's almost a full CD!
I think this is because you tend to make them relatively high resolution - I can't speak for anyone else here, but 480x320 would be *fine* for me!
(I watch it on my Zodiac 2 you see... ;))
