DL.TV Episode 42 streamed live Thursday, March 9th, 2006 at 4:00PM Pacific, 7:00PM Eastern. For the rest o' the world, that was 0000 UTC (Midnight Coordinated Universal Time, aka "Zulu" or Greenwich Mean Time).

We've got a special treat. Assuming he hasn't come to his senses, Jeff Bates, aka Hemos, aka the co-founder of Slashdot will be on the show, talking about what's up with /. (I still had all my hair when I started reading Slashdot!)

We've also got ExtremeTech's fearless leader, Loyd Case., who's all kinds of amazed by Intel's next processor, code named Conroe. He's gonna tell us why it doesn't suck (not even a little), along with the scoop on this week's Intel Developer Forum.

You want more? Sure!

Microsoft keeps gunning for Google: Windows Live Search just hit beta.

Should google be looking over its shoulder? The mapping was pretty good...

The Yellow Machine: Anthology Solutions offers up a high end 1TB NAS for the home.

Is it worth the hefty $999 pricetag?

The Intel Mac mini: will we gut it like a fish, or just review it?

Unlocking phones....

Something strange and unpleasant happened to our iPod video between our NAS and the servers you download from. It played (and still plays) just fine here, but the download's crashing Quicktime and iTunes playback alike. We're re-uploaded it (we rendered a fresh file, first) and posted it for download once again.

Here's a direct link, iTunes users can re-download after deleting the file in iTunes. (Please don't unsubscribe, tho!):

We're also spending some heavy quality time with encoding process once again.

Video that looks brightly lit and crisp in our initial capture is looking dark. Dreary. Unlit, even, after we encode it.

It's not the studio. Yes, we white balance the cameras. It's not the f-stop, iris or a general need on our part to be ...  dark. It's definately happening during the encoding. We've given Roger Chang (yes, that Roger Chang) a big stick and carte blanch to beat the problem out of the system. We think you'll be happy w/ the the iPod video now.

Oh, and to the dude that keeps posting and emailing about iPod video and the WMV video being  a useless waste of time and server space?

Quit it. The iPod viddy makes up 25% of our downloads. The WMV is the preferred format another big chunk of viewers.

Our apologies on the bad download, and our promise that we'll keep working to give you the best video quality we can.

Patrick
