I just tried loading Windows Live on Ubuntu Linux. After I allowed the site in NoScript, it loaded in just a couple seconds in Firefox. On XP, it was still showing as loading 2 minutes later with only the search box and Windows Beta log.

I love it when Alex stops by with the cool Pixel Corps info. That guy is amazing and is doing wonderful things with the Corps. One of the last times he was on, he showed that new, low-cost compositing tool that adds CG to real video with ease. Always great stuff.
So he's going to have a show with Leo over at twit.tv? That's incredible news!

Yes, that desk skirt is sloppy. Should be mounted below the table edge without thumbtacks. It's amazing the careful detail people will give to a case mod or custom car and then be a total slob elsewhere. And what's with the random remotes?

Obviously, Patrick and Robert probably already know this, but Kevin Rose did a great Asterisk overview on an episode of Systm: http://revision3.com/systm
That episode is probably *the* one thing that changed my opinion of Kevin Rose. It's a little dry, but it goes into some good depth, and shows how internet shows like Systm can go into more detail than your average network tech show.
There is also a free (and legal) Asterisk book from O'Reilly available at http://www.asteriskdocs.org/modules/tinycontent/index.php?id=11
Can't wait to see DLTV tackle the subject as well!

Hi there
I was watching the bit about the Ipod in a bag and I thought that Pat would have showen how to put the cable through the bag. A trick that many motorcycle riders used for many years to lube the cables on there bikes will work here too. Poke a small hole in the corner of the bag and thread the cable through the hole and then wrap a rubber band around the bag and cable. Be sure to get the rubber as tight as you can. ( At this point the motorcycle guys would hang the bag up so that it was above the cable and then pour some oil into the bag, let it sit over night and the oil will seep down through the cable to lube the inner part of the cable.)
A few things to note about bagging you Ipod or phone ect.
*Do not take into the water anythine that you cannot or do not want to replace.
*Water protection is best used to protect from a splash of water.
*If you want to take your gear into the water get a diving case that is rated for deeper then anything you plan the dive.

The monitor went into hibernation for reasons unknown. Statistics said 1500+ frames dropped/skipped. When it came back up the MP was locked had to restart.
Wonder what was on the back of Robert's shirt? Anyhow, great show! Funny watching Patrick's giant fingers trying to manipulate those wires!
Ahem, I happened to see a monitor like the one you used to have on another show earlier today? You need to chase down the Head Crank and get it back!

Kyle, The desktop Macs are amazingly easy to open and work on. They open with a single latch. The mini is more like a notebook, made for compactness, not ease of modding. The mini opens easier with the putty knife method, don't know why Patrick was messing around with the wires if he had not figured out the technique yet.
The mini's have such high resale value, it's smarter to buy a new one with the options you want than to upgrade it yourself.
But anyone who will title a post "Macs suck" is probably not actually considering buying one anyway (even with Intel inside and the Windows hack).

I just started checking out the show and like it a lot but I was wondering why you chose such an odd codec. Why not use something like divx or xvid? Or at least have those as an option. It took my a while to figure out how to get the audio to work under Linux because of the aac format. Emerging several packages and adding the "aac" USE flag got it working though. I do love the show. Keep it up.

That segment with Alex Lindsey from the Pixel Corps about 3-D photography was great! I took all kinds of pictures of the outside and inside of a HUGE building--almost an entire gig of raw, high res images. Now, I can make a freakin' 3-D model of the bank I was planning to rob! HOLY CRAP! Thanks guys, you just made my job a WHOLE LOT easier! Kudos.

Depends on your application. Also, with those cpus you might want to look at what motherboards are going to have the features you need (eg. NUMA, SCSI, PCI-X, SLI, ECC, etc). Do a google for "techreport X2", you should find the direct comparison you're looking for.
I'd like to see it, but I doubt server parts will be seen much on dl.tv.

The Otterbox I use for swimming with music gets lots of comments at the pool. The only place I've found that has reliable stock of headphones is waterproofcases.net. They have some new ones I've just ordered. Keeping headphones in your ears while swimming isn't easy. I'm waiting for new implementations of the skeletal conduction thing using cheek bones.

The issues with GSM phones and audio equipment are not already very well known in Europe. I did not understand the technobabble about 217MHz? GSM is around 900/1800/1900 MHz depending where you are.
Anyway, what is happening is that the radio signals used by the phone are being picked up by the audio equipment. This should not happen, audio equipment should be immune to radio signals, but the signals from a nearby phone are relatively strong. Only active equipment is effected, passive devices like loudspeakers are not, but amplifiers built into speakers are, especialy cheap ones.
These radio signals are sent using a technology variously called Narrow band Time Domain Duplex and time division multiple access TDMA. That is the phone transmits a pulse of data and the base station transmits a pulse in turn. The frame length is 4.6mS so the repetition rate is 217Hz. In addition, 8 phones share one channel so in a voise call the phone is only on for 1/8th of the time. So it might send a pulse of radio transmission for 575 microseconds, 217 times per second.
When the phone transmits it uses high power, half a watt or more average. This high power RF gets into the audio circuitry which rectifies the RF and and often causes a small jump in the audio level, you hear this as a buzz.
When the phone is acquiring a new base station, it will use full power initially and you might hear that as a few pulses. Just before a call, there is some handshaking and ranging before the phone rings, you hear that as a regular rythm. When in call you will get a constant buzz.
With CDMA you do not hear this for two reasons. One is that the phone is transmitting wideband signals with much shorter bursts and the other is that the pulse repetition frequency is well beyond the audio range. It can still affect video though.
Why does GSM use pulses and not transmit all the time like analogue phones used to? Because with TDMA/TDD if you do not transmit and receive at the same time it means you do not need a duplexor. These are phsically large and expensive to make.

I'm using IE and in2tv doesn't work. It plays the commercials, then when it's time to play the actual episode it's just black with 0:00/0:00 showing up. I don't get this. Did anybody try installing that Hi-Q activeX codec? I installed it then regretted it immediately.

BIG freakin' surprise there! I joined AOL in the mid to late 90s. It was rare when something they offered actually worked. When and if it did it usually didn't work long. When I want old TV reruns I just watch TVLand... Hi-Q is most likely buggy, I wouldn't risk it.
