This short and bouncy episode streamed live on the web at 4PM PST (7PM EST, 00:00 UTC).
Here's the deets:
- DOJ gets 50,000 search queries from Google
- What a bummer: the team that made Katamari ... Dissolves.
- Warner Bros HD-DVD titles will ship in Late April
- The Kell factor means you might want that HDTV sitting closer to you than your old NTSC TV.
- Need to share an external hard drive between OS X and Windows machines? If the files are under 4GB, a drive partitioned in FAT32 will do.
- Our capture files typically run bigger than 10GB, so we format the external drive with OS X's HFS+ and run Mediafour's MacDrive 6 on the PCs. OS X will read NTFS formatted drives. It won't write to them!
- Want to slow down your 802.11G network? Let 802.11B cards in!
- Viewer Question: can you use an HDTV as a desktop monitor?
- Viewer Question: How can you get Windows Audio to encode over 192Kbps?
- Viewer Tip: AOL's In2TV only runs on Windows XP or Windows 2000. We should have tested it on Linux or OS X:
- We promise to look at web services on other platforms as often as we can.
- The RSS feed for DivX is up... we're experimenting with new deinterlacing tools for our H.264 and iPod feeds.
A few minutes after we got locked into our studio, Microsoft announced that Windows Windows Vista will ship in January 2007. At least for consumers. The business version will ship in November 2006. Mary Jo over at Microsoft-Watch is all over this one!

Hey, The best fire wire webcams are probably the Apple iSights. They work on Linux, Windows, or OSX.
Good quality and frame rate. Can be a little pricy though.

My brand new motherboard does not even have a fire wire port. Fire wire is the same speed as usb 2.0. In another dl.tv episode they said it was quickly dieing.
Its odd that they didn't post anything about what tonight's episode would be on. They usually do.

If it was the XP system that copied files over gigabit so much slower than OS X, Patrick would have spent 30 seconds bashing it. But since it was OS X that was slower he says "let's not go into that".

I live in a college dorm and use a 26" LCD as monitor. I put the TV on my desk and use it just like a regular monitor when I am using working/gaming on the computer sitting about 2.5feet away; when I watch tv/movies, I usually lay back on my bed about 4 feet away. From my experience, at 2.5-3 feet, I don't really have to pan my head around to read the entire screen while the fonts are big enough to read, the fonts are not as sharp as my regular computer monitor but still very readable. Another issue is make sure the LCD you get is able to use DVI for PC connection, I have heard on some sets, you can only use VGA for PC. For my set, when I use DVI, xp doesn't detect the right resolution and I have to use the nVidia driver to add a custom resolution.

Sorry I hate to go off topic but it seems asking about firewire webcams already is. Firewire might have the same speed spec as usb 2 but there is a big difference. firewire (mmm firewire800) is isynconous; this means if you have 10 usb devices hanging off your pc they are all sharing the 480mbs offered by usb whereas firewire devices can all operated at full speed. Firewire is a scsi replacement (or should be seen that way) and usb is a com and serial port replacement.
Many people also report that usb devices use more cpu time than firewire, so the moral of the story is buy firewire for anything that require constant bandwidth.
BTW The show is getting better but I would like to add my voice to those calling for higher def video downloads.

usb 2.0 is THEORETICALLY faster than firewire 400, but not firewire 800. firewire is more reliable than usb 2.0, as in it can transfer data at faster, more constant speeds.
try capturing a true hd feed at 14-25mbps via usb 2.0. good luck. that's why there's firewire (brought to you by apple--go figure). who would've thunk that apple helped create firewire? i mean, windows machines are soooo good at video editing (that was sarcasm, by the way)!

Hey Moe, Hey Moe an' a nyuk nyuk nyuk~ Like you haven't heard that one before...
Yeah, it did seem a bit short but I got to see the stream fullscreen and it was pretty smooth. 41 frames dropped/skipped the usual 514 kbits/sec.
I agree with Robert about MusicMatch. Versions from 6 up, free and retail, rips pretty good. I can't really tell the difference between 96 or 256. (2400hz loss in left ear.) I like it for the ease of use. Don't get it if you want to burn your own CD-R/RWs though. It's the pitts as a burner, at least that's my experience with it. However, I've heard LAME is the best for quality.
Haven't heard "sneaker net" referred to in a while. We used to go modem to modem using QuickLink terminals and typing in Hayes AT commands. Blazing speeds up to 36,333. It worked in emergencies back in the olden days!
Be back at random times tomorrow checking for the downloads!

15:9 - 1280x768
16:9 - 1366x768
windows resolution - 1280x720
same here. although, i have a 15:9 tv. so, i had to set my pc resolution to 1280x768. otherwise, my aspect ratio would be off.

I watch all the PC stuff w/no complaints(being a Mac person), just because I don't use the OS dosen't mean I have no interest in what is going on with it. I thought Vista looked really top notch.
Apple has capitolized(and marketed),on the idea of the digital lifestyle a lot better than other companies so it is inevitable they should get some screen time.

Also, I forgot to mention that a lot of games even the recent ones like Battlefield 2 and SWAT4 DON'T support widescreen. You can kind of do a hack (by adding a command to desktop shortcut) to force Battlefield 2 to go widescreen, but it's still seemed somewhat stretched. Many of us widescreen users demanded DICE/EA adding widescreen support and were replied with the standard big corporate response: "Our research has shown that there's no market interest for this feature...blah blah blah"

Sorry Joe but&
* I am simply not interested in cracking up a Mac Mini case.
* I am not interested in knowing all possible tricks to get rid of my iPod's scratched -Show me the before, show me the after and don't make a fixation about the topic.
I like to be informed, but let's keep things in perspective here.
I'm not bashing Apple. It doesn't make me a "Mac Basher" because I think DL TV is covering Apple gears way too much. I also think the news channels are covering Musulmans wars way too much. Does this make a racist out of me?
I'm only saying that if Apple has a 5% market share, you should spend about 5% of all your content talking about it UNLESS it's a new technology.

I don't understand what the deal is. It seams you can't go to any bloody forum anymore (digg, twit, slashdot, etc) without people crying about the abundance of Mac content. I wan't to know where this interweb is that is overabundant with Mac content.
It would seem to me in the universe of computing, some people just want to enjoy and get on with their computing experience (whatever the platform), and then there are (predominantly anti-Mac users) who want to whip out the flames anytime Macs a mentioned. DL.TV has no mandate to run some kind of single-party state that bows to these increasingly loud anti-Mac bullies that seem to be rampant on the net these days.
I honestly think the DL.TV crew does a good job selecting content that people want to see. They do a good job putting together shows that a lot of people enjoy. If you're not interested, then there's nothing interesting to see here. Move on. It's simple, what's the problem?

I had been trying these live CDs. Ubuntu ran the best on my machines, easiest to set up on HD and use except it refused to change the refresh rate from 60 up to anything tolerable. 60 gives me a headache! I liked knoppix but it wouldn't install from the live and loved the look of Vector. Vector won't run the smb properly, it also won't get on the internet on my old Dell but worked fine on a Gateway. Have Slackware and boot disks but haven't tried it yet.
I want to see the insides of a G5 Quad. If I'm going to spend more than a grand on a machine, I want it to fly the freakin' space shuttle! I didn't have a problem with the Mini, but move on to the BIG BOYS!
I've also been going 'round 'n' 'round with XP. Finally had to do a dual boot 98se/xphome so I could use my scanner, hyper pen, old USB Spressa CD burner and hp 5550. Everything would work fine until it got updates from MS. xp is TOO NEENER NANNY! Lol, it's my machine and I want it back.¶:0(

"Move on. It's simple, what's the problem?" & "I don't understand what the deal is. It seams you can't go to any bloody forum anymore (digg, twit, slashdot, etc) without people crying about the abundance of Mac content. I wan't to know where this interweb is that is overabundant with Mac content."
It's not because YOU don't understand the problem that there is no problem. Don't you think that there *must be* a problem if people are complaining so much?
I don't understand why you don't understand.
Let say, "Popular Mechanics" was writing about Lamborghini. Let say they wrote 20 (out of 100) pages about that matter, each month. Let also say that the subjects were going from "How to adjust a mirror" to "What could you do to seat better in the car?"! Geeez! Why not How to open the hood, How to change oil and How to replace gas filter?
I mean, let's face it. People would gaze at first. Then, they'll start to find this boring because the subject is just too specific to touch them. They'll start to turn themselves upon a competitor that, even if they liked Popular Mechanics' 80 other pages.
They'll do (DL.TV) what they want. Personally, I'd rather learn about TV's, TIVO, HDR, Sats Radio& Games! But hey, if the management likes the Mac and want to promote it, go ahead.
For every viewer/reader/customer that speaks out loud what they think, do you have any ideas of how many just stop listening/reading/buying? Is that concept too complicated to understand?
Of course not, but you are just too busy crying about the anti-Mac bullies. Maybe you should stop yourself and be objective for once.

The problem is the backward compatibility on USB 2.0
There are 3 types of devices for USB:
Low-Speed
Full-Speed
Hi-Speed
If you buy a Hi-Speed device its just as fast as Firewire...The problem is finding a Hi-Speed device because it isnt backward compatible mfg.s dont want to make them.

Leo and Ben Durbin did the dual boot on a MacBreak special. They didn't show how it was done just that it could be done. XP appeared in the upper left corner of a 30 inch. Well, they got that far.
I must be missing some stuff, it doesn't seem like they spend that much time on Macs?
If you don't do at least some "How To" here and there the show just comes off a commercial for the products of "future" advertisers.
Either way your audience is growing... I'll continue to watch and download until I get bored and move along or spend more time > Tina 'n' Thug "on10". You can't please all the people all the time so you do what you can and get on with it!

Oh I love MusicMatch! Never heard of EAC? I can easily convert a whole folder of wavs to mp3pro in no time and can convert them back in case I have to do a remix.
I dumped iTunes because I thought it was a confusing mess. Why they would create libraries for me to click on when I haven't subscribed to anything is beyond my comprehension... So I sat sitting waiting for video selections to load thinking something was wrong with the machine. Oh well, anyone who cannot host their own shows probably aren't worth watching anyway.
So when will the ever clumsy Roger Chang get some face time? He has fans out here too! I suspect Robert is dying to run one of those cameras, let him take Roger's place for a segment.

Think about it, the Harddive's interface internally on a motherboard is sata transfer rate is 150mb/s or sata 2 at 300mb/s so what's the point of using gigabit ethernet when the fastest it will be is 320mb/s (and that's scsi) not to mention that external hd's bottleneck as well.

I can't believe you're using Musicmatch and suggesting iTunes. Those are some of the worst programs I've ever used. Robert, have you actually used lame before? It's a little hard to compare a command line encoder to a bloated music management system like Musicmatch.
Please, please give Exact Audio Copy a try (in conjunction with lame). You complained about MP3 tagging? Well it's hard for me to imagine having more control over the tagging and naming of my MP3s than I do with EAC/lame.
Also, EAC is designed to get the best rips possible, and I'm always doing other stuff on my computer while it rips away. I can even have it rip CD after CD, while the encoder goes on in the background. Please give it a try.
