It seems like every other episode that Patrick mentions that right click on a Windows computer is like Command+click on the Mac. When will he get it right?!?! Control+click is the Mac equivalent for right click to bring up contextual menus and such. You guys constantly mention how you want to do more work with OS X systems and you point out the things that make Mac users cringe, but you are really going to have to get this basic fact straight before you are going to make any progress getting credit from the Mac user crowd.

Note: I actively use Mac OS X, Windows XP, and GNU/Linux systems. They each have their advantages and this post does not serve to start a two-button mouse war. It simply strives to help Patrick get his facts right.

I have the ATI HD tuner, the hardware itself is great, you get both ATSC and NTSC tuner and it also comes with the Remote Wonder Plus which you can use with other programs. But the problem is just like any other ATI products, the software and driver is awful, I spent the entire afternoon and evening trying to get the ATI media center to work and all it did was gave me audio (I am using a nvidia video card) and a black screen. After 2 days of work, I gave up and installed Beyond TV4 and guess what, 5 minutes later, I have HDTV! Do some search on the internet and you will see many similar stories (even some from professional review sites like Tom's Hardware)

Good show though.

I can heartily recommend suse linux. Sure there are other really good distros, but let's face it, if it's too much work for grandma, it's probably too much work for most regular people. Life's too short to be editing kernel .config files (which I do) or compiling anything.

Linux has a long way to go. Even Dell seems open to offering Linux but they just scratch their heads like DL.TV and everyone at the whole notion because it's just too fragmented. Choice is good, but as Linux is today, it will never expand it's mindshare.

Great show! Is Robert doing the show while out on work release? Is he about to run away to Maui to become a sun king? Or did he forget to do his laundry?

Hey, Dan Hsu did a great review! He didn't say whether he got the message, "Dan Hsu killed his dumb self!", when the bot got in his way. I thought idiot bots only existed in UT? "Red leader I've got your back!"

Roger didn't even hold up his thumb!

5 Discs for Suse? It's gonna take me a while to download all those.

I've used 98se to stream the show before an it worked fine but I was using WMP9.

Oops! Was Sheldon for real? I did see the iPod battery commercial tonight. Funny!

rodney,

You're not really at the right place to ask that kind of question... But hey.

The answer is: It depend of your motherboard.

Could be:
SDRAM-PC100 *go with PC133
DDR-SDRAM (PC2100 or higher*)

* YOU SHOULD REALLY READ YOUR MOTHERBOARD'S MANUAL.

I think that Patrick and Robert should try Ubuntu as a distro of Linux. I don't use Linux that much (semi-noob). I teach elementary school, and I was able to install it, play dvds with it by downloading the correct "stuff", update Firefox, configure my home network to see my windows shares and my networked printers, etc. The support is very good online. I tried SUSE 10 and the new Fedora Core 5, but this just seems simpler to me. I got the 32 bit, 64 bit, and Mac versions free in the mail, although you can also download them. Ubuntu, also contained a "live" version of each to try out.

ps Yes, you can change screen resolution in the GUI Patrick!

No one ever seems to mention that all cable companies must give you a box with firewire out. It is an FCC requirement put in to support HD vcrs. While few tape decks took off the requirement is still in. There are several software packages for osx, windows, linux (including mythtv!) that will emulate the tape deck enough to fool the cable box to give you the content. Some other bonuses is that the most of the over lays which spam tivo recording on channel change dont show up as the box cant install them on the HD stream. There is of course a encryption scheme for pay channels called 5c the free basic channels should be unencrypted. A segment on the setting up firewire recording on a PC via a motorola box from Comcast would be very intresting. Of course doing so with MyTV would be bonus geek points.

I think Ubuntu was the easiest. However, no matter what I did, including FOLLOWING all the directions on line and the ADVICE of others it would not allow me to change the refresh rate from 60hz to anything higher. I need at least 72. After about 30 minutes the flicker gave me a severe headache. (No one else seems to notice the flicker???)

You can download the installation iso quick enough (one disc), it found other shares and got online with out me having to do anything. It was pretty easy to configure once it was up, well, with that one exception.

It did give me a little attitude when I installed the nvidia drivers. Some of this stuff you have to do via a console. http://ubuntuguide.org/#jre This page helped a lot with console!

I'd tried that a few times before but thought maybe if I did that as soon as it booted before doing anything else it may fix it. When I reduce the res to 800x600 I'm offered 60hz and 54hz. When it's set to 1024x768 it only offers 60hz. I don't think it would help to reduce to 640x480. I don't think I could deal with that anyway. I'm stumped... Usually when I have some kind of problem with Windows I uninstall the video drivers, reinstall, and reboot. (That's how I got xp to get rid of the signed MS drivers it installed by default.) Wonder if I can do that with Ubuntu? Lemme go search. Thanks again!

Hi there;

Just an FYI. We Mac users have had right clicking for years now. Those of us who program, design or do anything more than surf have dumped our Apple mice for 3rd party mice quite a while ago. Pretty much everything you right click to do on Windows, we do on a Mac. And as someone mentioned, it's command (or Apple) plus click versus control click.

So what is the Mac keyboard equivalent for Control+Click?
Like in Windows it's Shift+F10 is right click.
There doesn't seem to be a consistent keyboard equivalent for the Mac.
Or am I on crack?

I like DL.TV...really.

But there are more times than not that Robert Haren opens his mouth and shows how much he really doesn't know.

Most of the time this is "about the Mac OS".

Case in point.

"right-clicking"

Robert comments about Microsoft in IE having the "right-clicking" thing going on - and then makes this hair-brained comment out of sheer ignorance that "Mac people are wondering what he's talking about...

Robert. Listen up. Apple has had Contextual Menus built into the OS since version 8. Yes, they have been hidden behind Steve's desire to have a single-button mouse (until very recently). But if you have a two (or three) button mouse (with or without scrollwheel) there ARE extra menus that come up in the Mac OS (just like your beloved Microsoft Windows)....

Wake up to the Mac....the hackers are - why can't you?

-great show-

maybe Patrick should just do one by himself....

Its weird that two confirmed windows men even talk about macs at all. I see a few notebooks here and there but for the most part, nobody really owns them except graphic people who have to for graphio ethical reasons.
I mean, if you follow the mac zealot reasoning, the machines are so perfect and wonderful, theres nothing to really to discuss, except how wonderfull it is to use a mac. heh

"changing the resolution is going to be my test for linux" -- Patrick Norton.

This may sound like a total copout, but setting up graphics on linux is _still_ the hardest thing you can try to do. This is because the two major vendors release drivers that have a non-redistribution clause, so none of the major distributions can ship them. Furthermore, X11 is only just coming out of the woods, and still requires text editing to set up properly.

By regular, objective standards, changing the resolution make sense as a way to test linux, but unfortunately it's going to be hard for some time to come, especially for monitors with weird widescreen resolutions.

I would try to get a copy of the upcoming Novell desktop release (I think they are calling it Suse 10). It looks really slick

Posted by: Krado
March 27, 2006 7:25 AM

Resolutions seem to be easy to change on the Live CDs or if it's installed to your HD with Knoppix & Vector They set the default REFRESH rate at 85hz. For me this works fine. Ubuntu will change the resolution with no problem but not the refresh rate, at least for me. The highest it's offering is 60hz. However, it may change if installed to the HD and you use the configuration editor, type in the number you want and reboot. It won't for LiveCD. I took the HD with Ubuntu out and put back the 2 98se and xp drives. So I haven't tested the above solution yet.

OpenSuse is 5 discs to download and burn. I'm curious as to why it's so large? I thought I'd wait for the review from Robert.

On this machine I use a 17" Vivitron 1020x768 68.8khz/85hz. I'd hate to see what it's like with a wide screen like a 30inch...

Video is one reason why I'm quick to recommend SUSE. The nvidia chipset is so prevalent these days, and SUSE always just seems to work with nvidia parts even though the drivers are propietary. Yeah, it's not exactly FOSS but it just works, which is what counts sometimes. Personally, I try to stick with VIA parts, but that stuff just isn't competing at price point, performance and selection anymore.

Posted by: Krado
March 28, 2006 6:17 AM

I've seen that, but haven't downloaded the iso for it yet. I thought it was the KDE version of Ubuntu? I'll get it. I intend to try all of them. I liked some of the KDE stuff with Knoppix. XMMS player comes to mind. It easily played mp3s from Window's shares.

Do any of you guys play any of the Linux ported games that are floating around out there now? Robert stated that he keeps windows around for gaming. I'm more into the older games and wanting to play some of those ports. I think Jono Fowler is porting/has ported Duke 3D to linux and maybe Shadow Warrior. I saw a Linux UT just the other night.

OpenSuse looked promising but it's size keeps me from getting it until I see someone else use it. However, I went out a got a 50 pack of CD-Rs. I got a whole lot of new coasters now too! *&^%%$ Nero! I'm amazed at the number of Linux projects out there that doesn't get much press if any... (Oh yeah, MS is making noise again about sueing Linux.) Lol, they patented doubleclick?

Krado -- try Kubuntu Dapper Drake Flight 5. I'd never really given the 60 hz thing any thought until you mentioned it. my stable box has a fully up-to-date breezy install with gnome and i really have no idea where to start for refresh rates...but in dapper's kubuntu, they have a system settings area where you can change resolution and refresh rate. It looks and acts very similar to windows in my opinion. i tried it just to see if it'd work and it did.

(it might even be in breezy too, i dunno. i'm not that big of a KDE fan myself, so i've never played much with kubuntu)

I use the RSS feed for this site to store a live bookmark. But all it says is
"DigitalLifeTV:DL.TV Episode XX: Avilable now!"

so when you check the RSS feed you see...

"DigitalLifeTV:DL.TV Episode ##: Avilable now!"
"DigitalLifeTV:DL.TV Episode #9: Avilable now!"
"DigitalLifeTV:DL.TV Episode #8: Avilable now!"
"DigitalLifeTV:DL.TV Episode #7: Avilable now!"
"DigitalLifeTV:DL.TV Episode #6: Avilable now!"
"DigitalLifeTV:DL.TV Episode #5: Avilable now!"
"DigitalLifeTV:DL.TV Episode #4: Avilable now!"
"DigitalLifeTV:DL.TV Episode #3: Avilable now!"
etc
etc

The only info that is changing is Show number, which isn't very descriptive and doesn't get me to want to watch.

If I subscribe to the feed, then I know what "DL.TV" stands for, so the first part is redundant. Also, if it's in my feed, then I know it's available. I mean I can't see you posting feeds that say "coming soon" "Give us another hour"..."be with you shortly". So let's get rid of that.

So now we have...

"DL.TV Episode ##" But again, Episode is sort of redundant since I know that a changing number means new episodes. So now...

"DL.TV ##" Okay, nice and Short, now put in a title and like "DL.TV #48: Vista, Linux and Google oh my!"

Anyhow, just a suggestion that I think would attract more visitors.

-Adam

March 29, 2006 6:20 PM

I noticed one key difference bewteen the studdred live version of the shows I watched on Tuesday and the one that made it to the servers on Wed. for download and that is the 3.5 minutes of technical glitches before the review of the 50" plasma didn't make it in there. Now, what's up with that? That sort of spontanaity is part of the reason why I watch these shows to begin with, and I think it's a shame that someone chickened out and decided to just edit those 3 minutes out of the download version.
And Patrick, unless you are doing it on purpose, I don't understand how you can confuse the Mac's right click implementation by always calling it command click instead of the proper control click. Come on now, I would figure you'd be able to get it right considering that both Kevin Rose and Leo Laporte both own Macs, and I'm surprised they haven't said anything to you about it. This is the why I'm stalking Robert and not you, since I believe Robert doesn't know any better. Dude, you made the switch for a month on the Mac back in 2002 on The Screen Savers, and I figured you would have remembered from way back then.
Speaking of The Screen Savers, seeing as to how episode 50 is coming up, why not have a special dl.tv TechTV reunion show where Kevin and Leo could drop by for 2 segments and you and Robert could just go through the news and reader emails like you always do. Now, that would be a hell of a show. Kepp it up.

Re Vonage 911

I recently called 911 on my Vonage phone to report a nearby crime. After reporting, I asked the operator if she was receiving my phone number and street address. She stated that she never knew I had called from a VOIP line, and had assumed that I had called from a standard land line.

The whole 911 angle is Fear Uncertainty Doubt spread through the Bell monopolies.
