Streamed live 4PM Tuesday March 28th!

The deets:

  • Bluetooth Hops on Intel's Ultrawideband
  • Toshiba Trades Notebooks for Thumdrives (In Canada.)
  • Robert's shocking admission about recycling... really, Robert, you should recycle electronics. And cans. And plastic.
  • AllofMP3 (and 40 other overseas bargain priced MP3 sites) = random credit card fraud claims UK's Side-Line.com.
  • And the international partner of the RIAA claims AllofMP3.com is illegal, even tho the Russian legal system hasn't taken the site out.
  • Blogger Uses Packet Sniffer to Catch Cheating Girlfriend.
  • Our condolances to Len on the breakup, and on not making Digg's home page until he blogged this... normally he writes more technical posts.
  • Reminder: use a spyware tool that can sniff out keyloggers on your system...
  • and remember: chat and email is almost always terribly easy to read on your local network!
  • A portable media player that plugs into a TV. Does Iomega's ScreenPlay measure up?
  • Robert's fave 50 inch plasma HDTV: Vizio's P50 HDM. It's a bargain for the size, too!
  • Viewer Question: Is the Westinghouse LTV-27W2 any good?
  • Low cost HDTV buying help!
  • Viewer Question: Some sites offer a bewildering variety of video codecs. Divx? Xivid? Theora? Is there one format that's the best choice?
  • Viewer Question: I've installed my new hard drive, why doesn't it show up in Windows XP?
  • Partition and format it!

Hmm, Iomega screenplay must be pretty impressive if that's all you're going to talk about tonight. Is it bigger than a breadbox?

What happened with OpenSuSe?? I was hyped up waiting to hear how that went!

And while we're at it -- what happened to visualizing files on your hard drive via programs?

Yes, do the whole show with OpenSuSe Thursday!

Can't wait!

Great show! Loved it! I recycle and hope everybody else does, Robert, lol! ;-)

The "spring forward" of the clocks is always Sunday morning at 2:00 a.m. then all of a sudden it's 3, lol! It may be this weekend, I'm not sure.

I hold you guys to putting up the downloads during the wee hours of the morning or earlier just like last episode. By the way, I want to see OpenSuSE too! It's Linux's time to shine on the big screen.

March 28, 2006 9:22 PM

Hey, chill man! If you are so pissed off with the show, then why do you still watch it!?

DL.TV is just a show where we all can sit down for 45 mins. or so twice a week and enjoy PN and RH talking about various tech. stories - be it old or new - it's still entertaining.

Talking of entertainment, would any of you wanna see Martin Sargent back on the show? I mean, he'd been unemployed for a while now (at least the last time I've heard on his podcast) and I'd love to see him also co-host the show - perhaps a special segment each week for him or something?

Posted by: Adam from Long Island.
March 28, 2006 9:38 PM

First off, yes the show does need a little tweaking.
However, every episode gets so many negative comments it's aggravating.

I watch the show every Tues at work and Thurs at home live with no problem. So if you and your friends are having problems pop for better equipment and STOP BLAIMING THE SHOW YOU GET FOR F-R-E-E!!!

Second, its obvious THS VAST MAJORITY have no clue how much time and effort is involved in providing quality transcodes, not to mention the difficulty in producing a live show. (Which I can attest to working in TV production here in NY)

In short tune in and shut up, or do the rest of us a favor and just shut up.

March 28, 2006 9:55 PM

Hey, guys! I always miss the live stream because of school and such but I usually download the MP3 as soon as its out (it's nice to have something to listen to for running).

How do you guys go about encoding the MP3 version? If you automated it right (although I realize you guys do most of the encoding manually) couldn't you pretty much rip out the MP3 file on the fly and have it ready right after the show airs? Just a thought.

Good work, I'll watch listen in tommorow!

My attention was a bit divided but enjoyed what I saw. Yeppers! Looking forward to Robert's review of OpenSuse. Robert did a great article on PCMag, with pictures. Who's idea was it to try to put that huge TV in the trunk of a Nissan? Back tomorrow for the download!!! Don't edit it, I want to see it ALL again as it happened!

March 28, 2006 10:26 PM

Yes, I even admitted that I was being silly and irrational. However, I am not an idiot. I know what I am doing. I also usually know when a problem isn't just me, my access to the internet, or browser issues. I tried to watch the live show on no less than three platforms (XP, OSX, and SuSe boxes) and, hmm, five browsers.

I'm only responding because I discovered that my profanity free criticism was removed from this comment system.

You think that's cool?

Maybe I should take screenshots next time my comments get past the initial moderation.

Anyways, I am certian thia is at least a local phenomenon . None of my local geeks friends can watch the live feed. I am in Cleveland, Ohio. Shall I inform you that Cleveland is not in the boonies and, although we aren't near the west coast, our pipe to SoCal is usually clear. Case Western has always had a good reputation for access. We were, after all, one of the first nodes.

Anyways, did any of you know that comments were sniped after being up and able to be commentud upon?

I'm no granola crunching, tree hugging, hemp wearing hippie, but I was quite surprised to hear Robert doesn't recycle much at all. I figured that anybody with his apparent intelligence would realize that recycling is critical to our future. Since he is aware of recycling and chooses not to, he is simply being lazy. Shame on you Robert, and anyone else that doesn't recycle.

Ok, now I'll get off my high horse and say I love the show, technical problems and all. Patrick and Robert, keep up the great work.

I saw your post before it was yanked and dude you dropped an f-bomb and that is probably why you were pulled. There are a bunch of posts that have criticized DL.TV that are still there. Just not the ones with profanity. If you want to drop various colorful metaphors, start your own site. This is a public forum. Please show respect.

March 29, 2006 1:20 AM

ah, okay, what I am suggesting is not in place of anything, but in addition to what they are currently doing. Even if you need to clip out/add info to the final version, the wmv that is already rendered to 700 kbps can be spliced with the changes and rendered again in minutes, at least my machine will do it FAST.

What I am saying is put that computing power that is just setting on the table in front as prop, to work rendering one of the much wanted (by me) versions.

The downloaded versions are faithful copies of the streaming show? Nothing added or cut?

another nice movie player out there is mplayer. It plays just about anything and has a really nice plugin for firefox. It's how i watch you guys live.

March 29, 2006 1:26 AM

XBMC, when did they say they're gonna stop posting the .wmv version? I don't recall them saying anything about that... (prob. due to my old age at 20 :-D ).

I hope the DL.TV crew isn't having another episode with their upload speed - as I recall from... a "few" episodes ago, they were uploading at some ridiculously slow speed.

Still, that was fun watching PN posting those ridiculously slow upload speed :-D .

I can't wait till I get the show (which is now part of my digital-crack addition :-) ).

Posted by: XBMC
March 29, 2006 2:36 AM

I didn't say they stopped ..

they are posting a DV sourced 640x480 version instead of of the 480x360 stream version.

Posted by: Sieb
March 29, 2006 3:19 AM

I wish they would post the WMV after the show. It was nice when I had something to watch on my lunch break (third shift) instead of wating to the day after. I don't care about quality or a million different formats, I just want to watch the show.

Relax, it's an informal forum. I tend to be the stickler myself when it comes to spelling and grammar but this is a place where folks come to be informal, relax and chat about how much they like the show.

so, just be kool(sp?) :-P

March 29, 2006 12:26 PM

You can render/encode the wmv version simply by having a $50 PCMCIA TV capture cards with an s or composite video input in one of the laptop PCs on the desk in front of Robert or Pat. Use the windowsXp movie maker and set it to capture the file at 700 kbps and we can all have it as soon as the show is finished. The Xp movie maker can keep up without even breaking into a sweat. You only need to upload the captured file. You don't need to render it again, Split the live feed between the streaming machine and the Roberts/Patricks laptop.

Posted by: XBMC
March 29, 2006 12:30 PM

The tri-caster there are using already spits out the wmv in real-time, basically saving the live stream.

They decided to stop posting that in favor of one they could edit, and encode in higher quality from the DV source.

Posted by: Greg Newman
March 29, 2006 3:56 PM

Actually, the only thing worth recycling is cans..MAYBE. Recycling doesn't REALLY help out the environment at all and in fact costs LOTS of money. Watch Penn and Teller's BULLSHIT series, (the episode on reclycling). It's fun to learn!

March 29, 2006 4:54 PM

I love the show and watch every episode, however I do take exception to the story about allofmp3.com. First of all the referenced story never talks about allofmp3 but other unaffiliated russian sites. Second the website covering the story www.side-line.com featured an increadibly poorly written article that referenced no specific incidents our sources and some information that was blatantly false, namely the claim that those supposedly defrauded would be unprotected from the abusive charges to there credit cards, which would be in clear violation of federal law. And finally this post was made on a website owned and operated by Hungry Media a record label that is affiliated with the RIAA. Additionaly the digg post that I assume this link came from is currently under review for the accuracy of the post.

Thanks, and keep up the good work on the show.

March 29, 2006 6:29 PM

Concerning the codec packs on the show. Theres a massive codec pack, called K-Lite Mega Codec pack which can be downloaded from http://www.freecodecs.com and even has Real Player and Quicktime alternatives. If you uncheck the BSPlayer option then all of the videos will be played in Windows Media Player.

I noticed one key difference bewteen the studdred live version of the shows I watched on Tuesday and the one that made it to the servers on Wed. for download and that is the 3.5 minutes of technical glitches before the review of the 50" plasma didn't make it in there. Now, what's up with that? That sort of spontanaity is part of the reason why I watch these shows to begin with, and I think it's a shame that someone chickened out and decided to just edit those 3 minutes out of the download version.

And Patrick, unless you are doing it on purpose, I don't understand how you can confuse the Mac's right click implementation by always calling it command click instead of the proper control click. Come on now, I would figure you'd be able to get it right considering that both Kevin Rose and Leo Laporte both own Macs, and I'm surprised they haven't said anything to you about it. This is the why I'm stalking Robert and not you, since I believe Robert doesn't know any better. Dude, you made the switch for a month on the Mac back in 2002 on The Screen Savers, and I figured you would have remembered from way back then.

Speaking of The Screen Savers, seeing as to how episode 50 is coming up, why not have a special dl.tv TechTV reunion show where Kevin and Leo could drop by for 2 segments and you and Robert could just go through the news and reader emails like you always do. Now, that would be a hell of a show. Keep it up.
(Sorry, I messed up and posted the same comment on the episode 46 comments, when I originally meant it for this episode).

Posted by: Jeff B
March 29, 2006 7:31 PM

I thought the technical difficulties were cool just before the 50" plasma segment. I loved how Robert kept looking at the script confused while Patrick kept holding his face in his hands looking quite stressed out. No one cares if the guys need a few technical moments during the live feed, I kind of got a kick out of it.

Right on, Greg! The fifth episode of the second season Penn and Teller's BS did a show on recycling. It pretty much confirmed what is common sense, and I had know all along. Here is the summary from Tv.com.

"Exposing the reality behind recycling, a supposedly pro-environment activity that in actuality creates pollution, has to be subsidized by the government because it's cost ineffective, and is completely unnecessary because, contrary to popular belief, our landfills are not running out of space."

Put down the kool aid. Think for yourself!

Posted by: Stan
March 29, 2006 9:16 PM

pretty much confirmed - because Penn and Teller say so? Corroborated with the fact that "you knew all along" That's pretty weak, although a presidential quality argument. Believe what you will, but at least back up your facts with some credibility, or don't claim to make the argument. Some people's minds are simple and simply made. Think for yourself indeed.

Here in the beautiful city of Cambridge, Massachusetts, we have had a successful recycling program for years. The 10,000 tons of trash

When you post your H.264, iPod, and MPEG-4 versions of episodes, could you just grab that whole slew of bullet points about the episode and paste them into a Quicktime Annotation field, say "Information"?

This has a really great benefit. Anybody using a Mac can just pop up Spotlight and type "Vizio" or "Bluetooth", for example, and instantly find any DL.tv episodes that talk about that subject.

I know you guys bristle at the whole "drinking the Apple Kool-aid" thing but if you try this, it's amazingly useful And it's literally a ten second cut and paste operation before you post the episode. In fact, I suspect you could script it and make it totally automated.

Love the show, keep up the great work!

"This is what happens when you don't rehurse your questions in pre-show, you get terrible answers."

And GREAT TV! LOL not to mention the cameras while setting up the plasma. Gotta love the tech problems, but in these cases they all turned out funny.

Keep up the good work, really enjoying the show.

Getting sick of this, what right does the RIAA have to police the world, the clues in the name Recording Industry Association of AMERICA... Just because RIAA says Allofmp3 is bad doesnt mean its right.

You yanks should just stick to your big country and leave the rest of the world alone.

Posted by: Krado
March 30, 2006 6:25 AM

I'd say it's because Musicians don't want to flip burgers so losers can get free music? Record companies now seem a little more picky about what bands they sign now. So there's going to be bands they won't even take a chance on!

In 1969 Comlumia Records gave Johnny Winter $600,000.00 to record an album. Do you know how much a 32 track studio with all the bells an' whistles rents for these days? Do you know how much desgin firms are paid just to design CD inserts. Do you know how much it cost to mix someone's music down and the time it takes? It takes hundreds of people, many with FAMILES, to make these CDs. You want to put them out of work? I know you don't give a monkey's as long as you get what you want!

You are making your decisions about recycling by watching a show made by a couple of idiot savant illusionists Greg? Do your own research, don't eat up their spoon fed BS....BS is the name of their series isn't it? Try using science facts to make sound decisions (unlike our idiot in chief, G.W.Bush). And hey, if you decide after becoming more informed that you don't want to recycle, fine. Just do the rest of us a favor and dispose of your electronics and other hazardous waste properly (not in a landfill or dumped along the road). We don't want our grandkids to be born with flippers. Although a 3rd hand might help with PC gaming, lol.

I know everyone knows about the Ipod Video, but doesn't it do everything that Iomega drive you demo'd does, except for the fact that it does it well and cost a little more?

Posted by: Ted Bundy
March 30, 2006 4:54 PM

Why recycle when you can throw it out? You won't live to see the landfills fil up!

The RIAA and other gropus like it for movies/film should al be disbanded becuase they are just silly.

I created a much simpler mobile video player than the ipod video or that IIomega drive. I take a 21 inch television and ductape it to a vcr and power it with special solar panels that pick up the radiation left behind by alien travellers and convert it into electrical energy! Only cost $96.63 for al the parts!

If an electrician named Brad White started his own electrical comapny, would the name "White Power" really be innapropriate?

Those wodering about Side-Line music magazine: this is a well known music magazine here in Europe that is certainly not RIAA related (they even published articles against them in the past). The insinuations made in the above comments come from people that are clearly after the magazine because it tells what we all should know and that is that allofmp3 is 100% illegal (and the magazine was right as you can see nowadays).

Belgian press has reported over the credit card fraud on numerous times with testimonials from people who were customers from allofmp3.

Sad to see how some on this site attack the messenger and leave the criminals unharmed.

Thanks to digital life tv for bringing this subject on air. It was about time someone dealt with it. Kuddos!
