This just shows that no one in the industry seems to "get" the PSP.
"The arrival last fall of Apple's video iPod only hastened the PSP's decline as a movie-watching platform."
Yes, because you can buy episodes of TV shows online for only $1.99 and put them on your iPod. Studios are charging upwards of $30 for a UMD movie with *no bonus material*.
Otherwise, the PSP has a much better screen, especially for watching movies.
Sony's biggest problem has been the fact they they have yet to relaunch their Connect.com site to include video content for the PSP. One of the best features of the PSP (except for the nice screen) is the fact that you can download content directly to the PSP via its built-in wifi, no PC needed. Imagine being able to download the latest episode of The Office or Lost directly to your PSP while drinking coffee at Starbucks, then being able to watch it immediately.
Sony has really missed out on marketing the PSP, it seems. I really can't figure out why I don't see more young(ish) professionals carrying around PSPs. It seems perfect: download The Office while you shower, then play a little Grand Theft Auto during the first half of the train ride to work, then watch that episode of The Office. Get off the train and walk over to Starbucks for your morning coffee, where you check your personal email and download a song via the free wifi. Then walk over to your office, listening to the song(s) you just downloaded.
I am only a casual gamer, and it was definitely the multimedia capabilities of the PSP that sold me (along with GTA:Liberty City Stories)
Anyway, I love the video features of the PSP. I've even made some of the video content on my website available in PSP format. Typically, I've bought only anime movies on UMD -- it's a genre I don't necessarily need on DVD, especially since the wife doesn't enjoy anime. The only live action title I've bought on UMD was a used copy of Spiderman 2, and that was only because I needed a live action UMD to show off the video capabilities of the PSP to one of my superiors. Otherwise, as mentioned in the article, I simply encode the DVDs I already own to the PSP mp4 format.
If the prices came down, though, I would consider buying more UMD movies. Or better yet, Sony needs to get on the ball with the Connect.com relaunch so we can download video content to the forthcoming 4GB memory stick.
It's *not* that "No one's watching movies on PSP [...] It's a game player, period." It's just that no one wants to pay $20-$30 for a UMD.
Perhaps the planned DVD/UMD bundles that Sony announced for a handful of releases will go over well...

But oh well tunning in for hopefully more bloopers/out-takes makes it worth it. You guys should really add the bloopers to the end of the downloaded version just for laughs.
By the way, it's really cool to be able to comment while watching the show. WOW! ( sorry, first time commenting ).

yeah, it's dark over here too. i think they're just trying some things out.
you know, if they REALLY want to shake things up, then they should tell "bob" that he can't put his paper cup on the meager-sized desk. lol. of course they could just do away with all those oddly placed remotes. give robert his notebook, but give patrick the keyboard and mouse--WIRELESS keyboard and mouse. now, THAT would look nice. maybe a bigger screen too? who knows? maybe they're trying to make it easier for the camera to zoom in on the tv, and that's why they got a smaller tv. that's my guess; but, then again, why don't they just get some piece of hardware that allows the tv to be the video output?
you know what!? BRING BACK THE HEAVY, RUSTY, METAL DESK! yah! hoo ha! that would kick @$$! give it that ol' (and i mean OLD) tech tv/zdtv feel... or just that "indie" feel.
so, no paper cups, lose the remotes, "bob" gets the notebook, patrick gets the WIRELESS keyboard and mouse, and bring back the old, heavy, rusty, metal table. that'll do it! that'll do the trick!
i should be a set designer or something. hehe.

I like the UMD. Maybe it's not taking off because of the titles that have been released. If Sony could get Star Wars on UMD it would sell. I do buy some movies on UMD and DVD because I listen to (and sneak a peek of) them at work or on the bus. Yes, the iPod can do that but since they've only given us 60 gigs,
Better movies and TV shows mean more UMD sales.

Here is the deal with UMDs and why they never worked as well as expected. I can buy a DVD and then convert it and watch it on my TV in DVD, computer, AND the PSP.
With UMD I can only watch it on the PSP, which means if I want to show my friends this awesome movie, I am SOL.
While UMDs do tend to look better than the converted movies (I have only compared 2 movies UMD to DVD rip) it is the portability factor.
Oh the other thing that might have killed it is that the "Universal" Media Disc.....only works on one thing, that is not universal.
Can't wait to download this tomorrow and see it again.

I really do agree with what you have said, and I hope Sony reads this a get on the Ball. Yeah the PSP is mainly a gaming device but with all the features it has it could be so much more. Umd prices need to come down way down if they pushed them at a 9.99 to 14.99 price point sales would be great for them, they really shouldn't of priced them at or above the price of dvd's. Even Stealth with it's demo of Wipeout Pure (great game you should try it) didn't make since at the 29.99 price point when there have been movies that had game demos and didn't cost more for it (Hulk, Riddick). I hope they get there act together they havee a winner on their hands but are not using it to it's fullest.

I see that for some reason, the deets for ep. 48 have been changed. They originally included a link to an article about the demise of the UMD. That's where the quotes in my post at the top came from.
And good point about "Universal," Paul. I guess it's meant to apply to the variety of content that could be held on a UMD (movies, games, music)?
BTW - I did an AVC 16:9 test on part of a widescreen movie, using PSP Video 9, and it looked pretty darn good. Had to use the highest settings, but it looked good at full screen, nearly as good as a UMD. But you know what, if that movie was available on UMD for $10, I'd probably save myself the time and trouble of ripping and encoding the DVD and just buy the UMD.

FWIW, I normally don't have any problems streaming the live shows, but it has been a while since I have done it at home since I'm usually at work when this airs. If AT&T/SBC/PacBell is starting to do more packet shaping in my area, I'm going to be none too pleased! Of course, my alternative is Comcast - woop-de-doo, great choices.
I'm with you guys on the lack of honesty in the broadband sector. This stuff's pissing me off more and more lately.

OK, video takes time to render, but how about posting the audio version as soon as it's available? How long can it take to seed servers & post links?
I'm whining because again I got home from work too late to catch the livestream & I can't even get an MP3 to listen to on my morning commute :(
BTW - How about mimicing the TV networks & replaying (restreaming) the evening's show 1-time 3hrs later?
How do think the numbers would be on a re-cast? Would you get enough extra eyeballs to make it worth it?

I absolutely agree with Karate Media. One of the biggest selling points of the Sony gaming systems, PSP and PS2 for me has been their attention to mltimedia and multi-tasking.
The PS2 was the first DVD capable machine and supported all the old PS1 games - for me, a no brainer. I think sales meted that theory out.
The PSP is Sony's first portable, and I think it has been a smash hit as a first attempt. Perhaps they tried too hard to push the multimedia, or, I should say, UMD. UMD is anything but universal. If there were UMD recorders out there, I think maybe the format would have some staying power.
Good reasons to rip DVD's to Memory Stick Pro Duo:
1. Cheaper than buying the titles on UMD. (Although, like Karate, if the prices were reaosnable, I'd consider it. I've bought several favorite programs.) Come on! One third higher price for a UMD version of the same movie?
2. Memory Stick media is digital. No mechanical, power draining contrivances. You could watch at least three times as much content on memory stick due to lower power consumption. I think the only reason MS survived is that it's writebale and no longer proprietary. I betcha SanDisk sells more MS Duos for PSP than Sony does.
3. Control. You can control the quality of the recording, to some extent. Don't need stereo? Record it in mono and save space.
All in all, I don't think the death of UMD entertainment content (non-games) would spell the end of the PSP; it's a great machine. I do think Sony's missing the boat on UMD entertainment, though. I say open up the UMD format so it's cheaper to produce - say, as cheap as DVD's, and let everyone record UMD's and it will survive.

I so wish people would understand one, the time difference they are in california, as in jack Heroin complaining about it being 11 no it's not it's only 8 something there, TIME DIFFERENCE. And give them time it's not something that is a quick and easy thing to do. Yes certain people have gotten it perfectly set but with so many people complaining all the time about it not being ready ASAP, be happy they are even doing this along with doing a live stream when they do.

I would recommend against the bloated K-Lite codec pack. Installing tons of codecs you don't need just to play a certain file can lead to problems later on with codecs conflicting with one another.

Just wasted more time on Linux! Oh it's so easy! Yeah (expletive deleted). Downloaded 67MB internet install boot.iso. Burned it, put new HD and got all the way up to where it asked me for a freakin' IP address of the **** server. What? So I went to another machine and got that. Then got error message BAD RESPONSE FROM SERVER! Enough! I'm going to the nearest bar and don't want to hear nothin' 'bout installin' no Linux! - Scene from Gone with the Linux!

Right at the start of the show Patrick Norton takes on the subject of Apple v Apple. He says to lawyers not to write in with legal points, but I'm not a lawyer so that's alright. He then starts going on about a copyright suit and that you have to defend copyright. That's complete nonsense.
It's not copyright, it's TRADEMARKS involved in this lawsuit. If you're going to talk about an area of law you should at least talk about the correct area of law!

If you bothered to read the notes about the network install, it mentions you should write down the IP of the install repository. That would be:
http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source/
Thus IP: 195.135.221.130
If you got a 'bad response' error, it's because you did not enter the IP correctly or use the correct IP to begin with.
The network install is meant for non-newbie Linux people who know their hardware will easily work. You should have used the recommended method -- which is downloading the 5 CDs and using them.
Just because you chose the hard way and failed doesn't mean it's OpenSuSe's fault.

Rather than be snippy like some other people having issues with the internet suse install, I would just like to say that I too am having issues with the installer not finding the server files.
I have followed the instructions correctly (pressing F3 then F4 and setting it first to FTP and failing on that, then HTTP and failing on that). I have used the host command on the adjacent MacOS X box here to get the IP addresses of the mirror servers, and nothing helps.
I am going to download the 5 CDs (the comp I am going to install suse on does not have a DVD drive), and that should do the trick.

Yeah, it's already 8:45pm in EET, I would love to get the crappiest wmv version online as soon as possible to get to see the episode and not having to wait for ages.. but since I need to wait I'll rather take the better version (h264) since the downloading time is not the issue here (and the file sizes are quite close anyways (if one doesn't count the mp3 as one))

K-lite codec pack is the most retarded thing ever. If all you want to do is play videos you don't need the ENcoder for it, only the DEcoder. FFDshow is the way to go for decoding any video format. The download is way less than 1mb and will play every video format. FFDshow contains many conflicting codecs and will give you unplayable video because the wrong decoder is taking over. as another member mentioned the CCCP is a good one because it also adds support for matroska containers. defiler pack is another good codec pack that uses FFDshow. I'm actually really disappointed that you recommended the k-lite codec pack, because its the worst thing to have.
PS codec packs also suck for encoding, and if you are encoding you should install only the codecs you need.
GAH! *shakes fist in air*
defiler pack, cccp, or start off with just FFDshow
or just use mplayer or vlc (they have all the codecs with them) ooh, and they are all stems of the same sourceorge project
