I had a bad expierience while changing systems, my 30gb backup hard drive that I ran as a slave to backup files died on me becuase I couldn't get the screw out, and I think I shook it too much, so I lost ALL of my files, I think I will get more into backing up my data now that I have had that experience.

They've always made it pretty clear that they don't get the downloadables out as fast as a one-liner because they want to maintain some standard for the release. You might not like it, but it's not for you to decide.

I agree with Martin, WHY NOT RELEASE ONE FORMAT RIGHT AWAY INSTEAD OF WAITING FOR ALL FORMATS TO ENCODE?????? DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE, YOU HAVE A GREAT SHOW BUT SERIOUSLY WHY MAKE YOUR FANS WAIT?????
WHY NOT ON THE NEXT SHOW EXPLAIN HOW YOU TAPE AND WHAT FORMAT IT IS IN. I AM SURE THAT A FEW OF US WILL ENCODE IT FOR YOU GUYS TO HELP SPEED THINGS UP... LIKE MEANKILLER SAID "Gamespot does a live show every week around an hour long and they release a wmv version 1 hour after the show"
I wonder if you start losing your fans (hopefully not) will things change? Seriously, release a wmv format as soon as you can and then you can take your time releasing the remaining formats, I really don't understand the need for so many formats, why not a wmv and a ipod m4v format, thats all, save some time

They already said they use FCP....If they used Compressor with it, and set up all their Macs for a network render, they could have it ALL formats encoded in a matter of a couple of hours, possibly less (depends on number of Macs). Takes 30 seconds per Mac to setup the program, after that it's usually self-sufficent (i.e. never needs to be touched again).
Also, sounds like they record it on tape, then dump it to FCP. It's not that hard to do a pass-thru on the deck, and encode it into FCP at the same time. Make your cuts, add your graphics, (and for love of god, fix the color. I can't believe Robert lets it out with everything so washed-out), render, spit out a "Quicktime Movie" that's self contained, and then load it into Compressor, add your compression settings, select your render cluster, and you're done! I believe you can save to remote/ftp/server storage, so you can set it and forget it. Add the links to this site, and the links would connect automatically as the files finish....meaning you can have everything done before you leave at the end of the day of taping!

So if hey are going to be taping tuesday's episode on Friday does that mean that we will be able to see the show live on Friday instead of tuesday? That would be nice although I somehow doubt the would do that simply for ease of not having to listen to everyone complain about how they don't have the encoding done right after the show broadcasts.

I learn more from call for help then I do from this show. It seems every time I watch this show the hosts talk about either ipods, HDTVs, or teach us basic computer lessons. The worst is when you talk about how you encode the dltv. Lastly, I feel the hosts fall of track and tell very long personal stories that don't contribute to the show. DLTV is a great show its just the combination of repeated commercials and not enough raw content made this episode really boring.

So when you say Joey got sponsored, surely there must be some sort of catch to the whole thing. I mean, why you would give away $3000 for a computer especially when its sole use is going to be playing games?

OK, I realize Robert is a "video display adict", but REALLY, how much is enough? I do not have the eyes of an eagle nor the ears of a dog. Some of this bleeding edge technology seems to be being developed for nothing more than to say "it can be done.".
While we are at it, how fast can a computer be. Realistically, it can only be as fast as I can think. How is this measured, and who will be the "benchmark"?

I use my ISP's web space for backing up some files - namely my bookmarks. This comes in handy when I am at a public terminal and don't have then with me.
I also keep a current resume and my full work history, dating back to 1986. You never know when an enployer is going to ask for this "Ancient History".
All else is backed up to other computers on my network. Nothing is faster than another hard drive. And don't forget those pesky outlook contacts (.pst file)

I have one acronym for the price reduction of laptops LCD.
I would think that the single largest cost of any laptop is the LCD screen. With the mass production of LCD's for desktop PC's, the price for this expensive component has surely dropped.

You know what>?
I don't belive joey that he got sponsored!
But if he did get sponsored and got a $3000 dollar machine their nut's. he was crying like a baby cause he doesn't have a rig to play video games? lol
That doesn't sound right at all.and u are right, there has to be a catch some were, they just can't give away a gaming rig for nothin.!

What, Patrick (above) - Robert has Pizzas? What is he, Dominos? Because he doesn't deliver in 30 minutes...
Agree with the foregoing comments - it's getting really self indulgent now folks. My wife, my "taste barometer", used to enjoy the earlier shows despite the geekiness. Now she finds it a wee bit tiresome, and the hosts just plain giggle too much at, well, at nothing really.

I've been watching your programmes for about a month or two and, as an Apple user, I'm impressed by the impartiality you show.
Although you're Windows orientated, you do try to cover both 'worlds' and I'll certainly
be watching regularly.
But, á propos 'both worlds', I can't find any mention of Boot Camp.
Have I overlooked something?
Isn't this news?
For the first time you can have the best of both worlds on one computer.
For me this is a minor revolution.
As for your question about whether Apple is still a computer company, wait until you see Apple's results in the autumn and winter of this year and you'll know the answer.

pizzazz : the activeness of an energetic personality
Yeah, I admit that the last couple of shows haven't had as much content as some episodes but I think it'd be unfair to blame that on Robert's personality.
For the record my wife enjoys the show, and Robert's witticisms.
Yeah, let's replace Robert with you and get some pizza jokes on the show. That'd be fun.
"Taste barometer" indeed...

Sarcasm wasted. What a shame... ;) All geeks need taste barometers for the real world. Hehehe.
Oh well, at least you admit the lack of content. How refreshing.
And boy oh boy, do you and your wife need an irony barometer. It's in the post.

I have no great love of iPod; I do like the fact that they finance Apple's continuing development of its OS. But when Patrick says Apple is no longer a computer company, he is missing the point. Apple is actually a consumer computer company, creating computers that are simple, usuable, with focused features. The iPods are the computers for the rest of us that Apple always bragged on. We have now seen two generations of these minicomputers, with Palms and iPods. Time to get used to it. Love the show!

scary, scary: two it-pro's when it comes to hdtv, mobiles, vid-cams, race-cars but those 'tips' revealed how poorly they organize their own stuff. -- "one big file", "mega", "Outlook", "MyFolder" (Patrick in M$-fangs)... all files on the "Desktop", "a text-file with your passwords" (Robert - probably not encrypted, ey?) -- I am not bashing, I am just surprised how poor they organize their stuff.

Funny you should mention backup. My 250gb Western Digital C: drive died last weekend. Suddenly started clicking lots, and a chkdsk scan revealed many bad sectors and didn't finish. Luckily all my mp3s, videos, and backup install files were on my D: and E: drives. However I did stupidly have some torrent downloads and photographs lying on C: that I always meant to move.
No longer having the ability to boot into my C: drive anymore, my Knoppix Live CD came in very handy. I was able to transfer some (not all) stuff from my drive to my laptop using Knoppix over my home LAN. Every time the hard drive hit a bad sector I had to reboot, so it was a slow and painful software but my PC is now up and running again with a Maxtor drive this time (that death-disk was my first and last Western Digital drive!). And best of all, my photos survived :)

With files containing passwords and such, it's helpful to have the information backed up in a few places so that a spouse or friend can recover that information should you pass on. Too many people don't plan ahead and leave a mess for their family/friends to deal with.

GOOD LORD!!!
The staff at DL.TV has to put up with this much bitching every 2 days?!?
Ya'd think the a-holes would actually LISTEN to the shows they are crying for, instead of just using the comments-page to bitch!
OPEN COMMENT TO ALL THE STAFF OF DL.TV
You are doing a FANTASTIC job!
Don't listen to the complainers about which version gets posted first, or how fast "somebody else" gets theirs out (this IS, after all, DL.TV, NOT "someone else"), take the time and do it RIGHT.
If you MUST close the Comment/Complaint board, you have me sympathy!
Again, keep up the good work!

Thanks for the Memory jog for backup, especially for the Outlook files! I'm new to Outlook & not familiar with all that stuff yet.
Also, Patrick, you mentioned there were a number of cool programs to help organize. I'd like to see what you find most useful for helping organizing your CD collection & music files please. I'm pretty organized except for the Music files & quite like your friend searching forever for what I want on the hard drive. :-(
So, hope you can show & discuss easiest way to do this in an upcoming episode.
Thanks for an excellent show!!! We try not to miss an episode.

Getting slower and slower releasing an encode, dont pretend it takes ages to encode because it doesnt, rather doing them all at once just do one then release it so those that want to watch it dont have to be kept waiting for some obscure format like ipod format.
