"Make better DL.TV"

shouldn't it be

"To make DL.TV better"

Posted by: Dustin
April 25, 2006 6:26 PM

In the post live is in quotations. I'm assuming that is because they taped the show on Friday, at least that's what they said on Thursday they were going to do.

freeRIP is a great ripping program. been using it for years.

April 25, 2006 6:39 PM

Perhaps it was meant to be "make better DL.TV". It is a fine-blended show afterall. I make better Kool-aid than my brother. I use a fine blend of sugar, kool-aid mix (read: more sugar) and only the finest tap-water around. I make better Kool-aid. I don't, however, make Kool-aid better. Oh yeah!

live unedited on tape i hope. the pre edited versio?

So I wonder why they dont just let us download it now? I am surethat is is not live and I am sure they have done the encoding already... Odd

Yea! Another episode of great dl.tv. I wish it was on more times during the week. I guess this episode won't have any bloppers because it was taped on Friday. At least that is what they said Thursday. waiting....growing lonely, growing old....waiting...

I don't understand what a lot of you are using to connect and play the stream, but I never seem to ever have a problem with the playback. I use WMP for the playback of the live stream and just add the URL: http://zdpub-diglifestudio.wm.llnwd.net/zdpub_diglifestudio always seems to work with no problems for me unless dl's stream is having the problem.

The reason why they are forcing us to view the entire show is because they most likely want to prevent you from skipping the commercials. I really hope that the downloads get listed immediately after considering they got the entire weekend+Monday to encode.

Is anyone else besides me not able to see the rest of the show? This is the first time it completely stopped working.

Posted by: BillR
April 25, 2006 7:37 PM

A question:
Since getting the downloads out is a "by the next day" sort of thing, does it make sense to stream the show at multiple intervals on the show day to serve your viewers more quickly (stream it every two hours 3 or four times).

I'm ignorant of how you actually pay for bandwidth, but this suggestion appears to me that you would get the show out to more viewers on show day and save to 'total' bandwidth by reducing the demand for downloads (because more people would be able to watch one of the streams and not need to download.)

What do you think? total brain fart or good idea?

I've been used GameJackal for a while now and it's was definately worth the $10. It's worked with every game I've tried it with; however, I've heard Starforce locks it out but I won't install that on my machine anyways.

GameJackal works by grabbing the calls to the CD from the copy protection. It records these and then plays them back on subsequent runs. I haven't had problems with patching games because none of the original files are modified. Some patches may require you to record more data off a disk.

I tried to watch the steam and it just didn't work for me. I tried the link on the main page and on the one posted above... no luck. It 'has' worked on this computer/location before (but not today).

It started and stoped a few times and then the audio stream finally started working, but the video was a static snapshot.

Anyone looking for a sub-$300 Mp3 player should definitely check this out. It's not flash-based, and has average battery life, but the features it has an the ridiculous amount of storage it has (80 gigabytes!) definitely makes it one of the best Mp3 player values you can get for $250.

Normally they stream it live while they are actually recording it, after which they generally go directly into compression and comversion which takes around 6 hrs I think is what they keep saying, after which they add the downloads and put up the flash player, so inorder for them teo stream it multiple times on show day would have to record and encode the show the day prior. And although this may seem simple enough we don't neccessarily know what their schedules are, I'm sure that Patrick spends a good part of the day Monday researching stories for tuesday and wednesday for thursday with friday spent dealing with other behind the scenes specifics that keep the show running "smoothly" despite a bumpy stream from time to time

I have never had a problem with dL'ING the show or connecting live from time to time before today.

I do not think the problem is me.

I have never had a problem from this computer before with DL TV.

Just becuase it works today and not for me and other's does NOT mean we arte idiot's doing something wrong.

I am very sorry David and anyone that took my words as calling them an idiot or doing something wrong. Heck! I diffently don't know much about computers, but I just don't understand why I seem to be able to watch the stream everytime it's on. I do not think anyone is using an older PC than me (windows98) and on a WLAN at home and still always plays the stream. I just open the URL: http://zdpub-diglifestudio.wm.llnwd.net/zdpub_diglifestudio
in WMP8 or WMP9 on my XP machine, and it plays. Maybe some of you are using a dial-up. In case you are, then I know why it buffers long time. There is no cure for that other than getting broadband!

Not to moan, but if the show wasn't live, couldn't it have been rendered by release time. Maybe not, but just wonderin'...

Posted by: B Williams
April 25, 2006 11:39 PM

Honestly I think they delay the conversion so that people actually watch the ads and try to tune in for the live version 'cause it comes out earlier. I inevitably skip over the ads in the downloaded version; I just don't have time for that junk.

In terms of technology it's possible to do a conversion from DVD MPEG2 to Nero's decent MP4 codec in realtime on a P4. Xvid/DivX doesn't take too much longer. I can't conceive of why their box takes so long; they should cut down their resolution on the input end I guess; there are so many wasted pixels on the receiving end!

Furthermore, I can't watch the live stream 'cause I'm on a school connection: 3 T1s for 550 bandwidth hungry high school students simply don't work. Oh well. College next year will be so much better in so many ways!

I am here at Baylor University, and in my dorm room they cap us off at 900 kbps. This is a similar speed to many campus users.

Also, you are not going to be running any P2P applications when you get to college.

If your show is Tuesday and Thursday...it should be ready for download(and show up on iTunes on those days). If not....tape the show earlier. Easy.

Posted by: HeadBand
April 26, 2006 4:38 AM

it streams LIVE on tuesdays and thursdays forget about itunes...some things are just better than true 'pod'casts even if it is avalible for fanboys after a while...it needs to be rendered first and uploaded to the servers so that usually takes a while

I do agree on special circumstances like today, when it was pre taped I don't see a reason to not put it up on the site shortly after the stream for download

Posted by: Paul Kerton
April 26, 2006 5:45 AM

Well, isn't this ridiculous. You pre-record on Friday, yet we STILL have to wait for the downloads... What on earth we're you all doing on Monday and Tuesday Morning? Surely you had the time to render everything so for once we could have it straight after streaming?!?!

Posted by: Glenn

April 26, 2006 8:21 AM

Man no doubt, the intro is crap! The show is great but after sitting through the intro I want to stab out my eyes because of that kids laugh. Furthermore it looks just cheap and awful, I understand the show has a budget but please that should be one of the easiest things to fix and improve the show quality!

Posted by: Larry
April 26, 2006 8:26 AM

Yes the intro needs work, fix it! But can we shut up about it already.

Posted by: David Harvey
April 26, 2006 8:42 AM

Just do away with a long intro, just have the title screen and get it going.
It will save time on the encoding/posting.

It seems most of you have questions or complaints about how long it takes to get the videos to us...

1) We don't pay a dime, so calm down. They'll get it to us when they get it to us.
2) They have stated NUMEROUS times (especially in #53 or 54) why it takes so long and that's one of the reasons why Patrick is going to that conference thingy.
3) Internet TV is still new - it's not like going to download.com - there's lots of stuff that happens in the background that we never see... you don't know (well most of you don't) what goes on with that whole process. Maybe do some reasearch and learn about... that'll keep you quiet until they get the download up!

Before they spend money on a new intro, they should charge much higher fees for ads that are especially irritating to the viewer -- you know the one I'm talking about -- looks like it was shot in an office cubicles using their own staff who can't act and god awful sound FX. It is so irritating I cannot even recall what they were trying to advertise.

I will not replace my currect collection of DVD's since both playres are backwards compatible. I will keep my old collection and just start buying new movies or old movies I do not currently own on the new format. The issue was really big yes between VHS and DVD. Duhh!!! You could not play DVD in a VCR. Same issue we had with the PS2 or X-BOX260. We just played our favorite games on the new system we just did not throw them away. I do not see what the big problem is. The only case at hand is which new format will win or which win will have all the best movies. That is the issue. I do not see movie studioes support both at any time.

Somehow I'm not confident about the ripping quality of Windows Media Player (not that I've tested it). MP3 encoding asside, to ensure the highest quality rip, especially for older CDs that may not be in mint condition, I would recommend Exact Audio Copy (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/) which does error correction and other fancy tings.

I got to get me a website going! I hope you guys enjoy it. 29 is a bargain. use it for a fileserver or something if you dont want to make a website. dreamhost.com

Wouldn't a VideoRaptor be so nice? :-) I've been gawking at this system for some time and I think dl.tv could use one of these. Perhaps everyone can chip in to help get one for 'em. I miss ZDTV! I still have my ZDTV cube (signed by Leo even!), back when TSS was still on-air. Perhaps this would be one more step to making it happen.

Wow I just discovered that Pat is actually doing online shows. I was a huge fan of Pat and Leo and the whole tech tv crew until the G4 disaster struck about 3 years ago and this is the first time i've even seen them since then.

Great show! Definately this gonna watch this every week and inform friends about it!
