1) Suicide Servers
As a rather large number of you found out around 4:10 PM today, our Windows Media server at Limelight Networks, died during Episode 56. A couple of gentle souls that stuck around (or tuned in late) tell me it popped back up around 4:50, just in time for last of the show to scoot by on screen. That sucks. Not the server coming back up, but the outage. I'd like to apologize for that.
I'd also like to let you know what happened. Whether it was server suicide (really, the show was pretty good, so I don't think our stream drove it over the edge), somebody tripping over the power cord, some nameless WM glitch, an attack, or what. But we don't know. I've just gotten of the phone with Limelight after a series of emails under the "um, we're getting a rather large number of posts and emails that said our stream died... what happened?"
The folks that answer the phone don't know. They're 'waiting for an RFO... that'll be available sometime later tonight.' That's NOC-speak for Reason For Outage... NOC being a Network Operations Center. (I love Acronym Finder!) As soon as we know, we'll let you know. Hopefully it's something massively cool, like 40 zillion folks jumped on the server and killed it. That's about the only happy reason I can think of for our live audience getting hosed.
[[Update 7:30PM: It wasn't something cool. It was "due to faulty handling of stream updates in the operating system. This caused the streams in several locations to fail to update." More later. Upate 8:45: Short version: it won't happen again. Longer version? Windows isn't UNIX, especially when a bad process goes berserk. A bad stream took out 220 Windows Server boxes.]]
2) Forum Lust We're dumping Telligent's CommunityServer (the software that DL.TV runs on) [[Note 05/05/06: On behalf of our dev team, I'd like to point out that Ziff Davis Media uses CS for forums on PCMag.com and ExtremeTech.com, "which is the reason we choose them (not for blogs) and that's been trouble free" and that "We're happy with Telligent as used in the PCMag.com Discussion forums. It's been a big step up from our previous system." In short, the only group here at Ziff that's frustrated with CommunityServer are the folks using it as a straight blogging tool: DL.TV and CrankyGeeks.com.]] shortly for something that doesn't a) cost a fortune every time you want to update the software or tweak the look of the site (I supposed it's cheap if you have a large in-house team of developers), b) doesn't do horrid things like randomly clip OBJECT tags for no apparent reason, or smersh up basic HTML formatting and c) a whole list of other reasons . If anybody reading is considering dropping a check on CommunityServer, free free to kick us an email. I'd love to talk to you before you do. [[Note 05/05/06: I'm sure our dev team would also be more than willing to share their success stories using CS for the forums on PCMag and ExtremeTech... CS carries a pretty heavy load there with aplomb.]]Did I mention forums? We need to get the site where we want it before we start building forums. We know you want them. We'd like to give 'em to you. At the moment, we don't have the bandwidth to set 'em up. (Tho, hey, Robert and I might go nuts one weekend and see what we can build in Drupal. [[Note 05/05/06: this was a bit of a jest on my part, but thanks to the Drupal mavins that emailed in!]])But forums are something we'd love to give ya'll, so, yes, they are very much on the radar. 3) The Downloads For Episode 56Will be available Friday. Don't worry about the server dying... the tape was still rolling. We're busy encoding and will have the files up Friday, assuming the anger over the server problems doesn't gnaw at me till the wee small hours when the rendering finishes up. If it does, DL.TV Episode 56 will be available sometime in the wee small hours Friday morning. 4) In the meantime...Feel free to kick on over to CrankyGeeks.com and check out Episode 7... Robert Heron's on there with Dvorak, Loyd Case and John Johnson and the whole crew is talking about HDTV, HD-DVD and Blu-ray. 5) Again,My apologies for the live stream going down. Patrick

Its been so long scenes TSS. I gave G4 about a week, and I left that crap. Pat and Kevin together again, this just made my month. This show is awesome, reminds me a lot of when Leo hosted call for help long long time ago( there was no real set, kind of plain) similar to DLTV now, can't wait to see the new set. Any who, I was curious who cuts your video??

It's so great to see Patrick and Kevin together again, and not only together, but doing a real show about REAL technology.
One of the reasons I upgraded my dish network pack was for TechTV, and then what happened happened and now I'm without a computer technology network. I'd even go as far as to say forget about the video games, or do it on a separate show if this really takes off for you.
If you can keep it confined to computers, electronics and emerging technologies, I think DigitalLife will have enough fan support for a return to cable/satellite. I'm certainly looking forward to it!
The content is great, you guys are true professionals, the expert knowledge and research is evident...KEEP IT GOING!!!

An intelligent show giving me information about the latest software, hardware and gadgets with an affable friendly host who isn't an empty headed set of jabbering teeth. I'm so there. Patrick and crew keep it up and I'm sure those little problems (sound levels and looking at the right camera) will clear right up.

Hey guys... watched you for the years you were on Tech TV. SO ticked that G4 took over and ruined Tech TV!!!! SO glad to see you guys are keeping the legacy going though! Audio suggustions: Dynamics Processing (compressor/limiter), low cut filter on the mics (could hear a lot of plosives, etc.)... THIS SHOW ROCKS!!! THIS IS WHAT MANY OF US HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR SINCE THE DEATH OF TECH TV! KEEP IT UP!!!!!!! (PS--Get Sarah Lane to do some guest appearances; she's very cool!)

It is great to see some decent computer info is back. G4 tried to copy the old screensaver program and failed bigtime. Hopefully we'll be able to pick you up on WideOpenWest cable system. I haven't watched G4TechTV for so long that I didn't know they dropped the TechTV. I'm glad to see you back Patrick & Kevin R. Keep up the fantastic work.

Hey Guys,
2 of my questions got on, thanks for answering them. I am real excited about my new Mitsubishi 62628 HDTV. So Far it is working out great, just gotta get some other components up to par. I will definitely look at those better DVD players you mentioned.
I am also looking into Tripplite. I was always an APC fan, but Robert was pretty convincing, and i will take another look. Definitely want to protect my new TV from any spikes... although in storms i will definitely unplug... hehe.

I think Patrick's black outfit looks good on him, kind of sofisticated lookin, but the necklace thing kindof doesn't fit in, straight up.
Any fashionable folks out there with some good advice for the man?
Jim Lauderback kind of looks tom cruise-ish dont you think? (his face not his clothes ... definately not his clothes, colors a little drabby there, good lookin man tho)

Just finished ep. 9. Great, as per usual. Robert and Patrick make a super team. (Whenever Patrick does the show intro, I always flash back to/expect to be hearing: the old 30 minute Second City Television program, "With Dave Thomas as the Beaver!" for Patrick's (as Wally, maybe?) intro of Robert.
I find the .mov version plays best, the .wmv is quite okay, and the XVID: visually fine, but no sound. (Drat!) I, too, use Kaffeine to view and to listen. Yes, it's all Linux, here. Here being. Titusville, Florida, 40 miles/65 km, east of Orlando.
Thanks for good IP TV, guys.

Hi, great show, but a thought: since for 99.99999% of us viewers this is NOT a live show, there is no need to make us watch through scenes like, "well it seems we're having troubles getting this working, so let's just skip this for now and let me show you..." or "I can't remember the url now but we will put this on our web page after the show for you". Just take your time to get the computer set up for the next part. Later, do a little clipping. Perhaps you are already doing this but just need to do it more. Just a thought.
Sincerely,

I agree that I think the problem of unstable stream may be a problem with the viewer's system. I had some buffering, but I may not have if I had rebooted my computer after I had been doing some downloading, excel work, video conversion, etc. before starting the feed. I think clearing out memory is helpful. Also, the download claim by isp's is only their maximum, ideal rate. Did you check afterward to see what your actual download rate was?

With the question about the girl that was told by the dell reperesentative that she needs a quatro 6500... About that. Although it is a professional card and will be more than you need (in some ways) for gaming... the quatro's optimization is meant for things like 3D modeling, just like Patrick said. However! The quatro doesn't do floating point calculations as well as the consumer gaming cards. So it might be great generating polygons, but if you have a polygon with texture, the card starts to show it's flaws.

Serious technical issues with this one. There was way too much bass, especially on Pat's mic, and there was static in the mid-high range that became apparent when the bass was turned down. Also, I don't know if VLC's equalizer is just unstable because I rarely have to use it, but while watching the h.264 version in it, it repeatedly crashed on me.
On the plus side, the video seems to have improved. The horrible, distracting interlacing artifacts have almost completely disappeared.

"So what I was saying is that if all those formats (apart from XviD) weren't there, we can have a single XviD .avi file of size 729 MB - and you'd be paying for the same amount of download (file size wise)."
Umm ...when you consider that not EVERYONE is downloading EVERY format of the video, they are saving a LOT of bandwidth by having videos approximating 150MB. If they had ONLY 700MB Xvid, that would *guarantee* that every person that wants the show HAS to download that 700MB. As an example, I only download the h.264 version which is 150MB. 1 person = 150MB instead of 700. you see?

The complaints I've been reading tonight is like ones I saw on the comments at twit a few months ago. Working on encoding for a living has taught me computers crash, software doesn't always work the way it should and (BLANK!) happens all the time.
Granted, DLTV is run by Ziff-Davis, a for profit operation. However, Murphy's Law and high technology work hand in hand together. Anything that can happen usually does and at 4 or 5 in the morning. I've done it enough to know.
To AJ and the rest of you, cool your jets. I'm certain the DLTV crew are doing the best. Besides, it's Christmas. Don't you guys have some shopping still do?
Merry Christmas to Pat, Robert and the crew of DLTV. You're doing a Great Job!

In order to determine demand for the show they are holding back to see how many people complain. If a lot of people complain, then they know there is a high demand, and will consider subscriptions or pay-per-view deals. I'm pretty sure of that.

Gentlemen
Thanks to Patrick, Robert and the DL.TV crew for their hard work.
Perhaps you could quell the whiners if you posted all formats after they're all converted and tested. Call it the weekend/mid-week post, or whatever PR comes up with. I can understand that you would like to get the latest news out as quickly as possible; however, I'm rather tired of reading all the self serving negative posts that are filled with whining and whimpering.
If you absolutely have to put the show up ASAP just post the streaming version and the rest of us who like to download will need to wait until Fri night or Sat morning. Go home see your families and get some sleep; for god's sake it's only TV show

there are people out there who have no technical ueber-skills or don't have a high-end pc. It is great to have the audio-only (mp3-version) of the show and the wmv, which runs very well with low-power pc's and with linux as others said before. the more vid-flavors dl.tv offers, the more it costs. if you don't like the feeds, convert it yourself. if you want higher quality, ask ziff-davis to co-produce their show and offer them your high-tech equipment, or donate money/buy adds. wmv/mp3 are worldwide accepted standards. if you don't like them, don't use them. I love the show as it is. and btw: i get it for free.

People. You can be angry if something you paid for is not being delivered to you in a prompt manner, but this show is FREE and as such must rely on a more modest budget than say, The Sopranos.
The fact that it hasn't been delivered "On Time" is even more moot since you can download and watch it WHENEVER YOU WANT!
I like the show, I wouldn't pay for it, but I also don't expect my every whim to be catered to simply because it exists.
To the cast and crew, all this aggravated rambling simply confirms is that you guys are doing a great job with the show.

Hey, guys. Just wanted to thank you for getting the episode recorded and up. As you probably know by now, most people are more concerned with downloading and enjoying each episode of DL.TV than they are letting you know how much it's appreciated.
And of course, when there's a hiccup in the process, some of these fans react in language of questionable eloquence. But you knew that.

frank, I also noticed Leo's palpable reaction when he heard the news about this show. I think Leo's great, but these little episodes of his really turn me off. We've seen it on TWiT before. Leo sort of goes into this passive-aggressive mode and the others, namely Kevin and Patrick (and this time Dvorak) express that they're basically trying to do their own thing with this whole medium - and retreat quietly from further debate with their long-time associate.
1) ziffdavis is delivering a Dvorak video show that I'm personally interested in
2) Leo needs to let go of TechTV

Where's the PSP video format? Just kidding.

A big thanks to Patrick and everyone that got the downloads up so quick. You have made a multitude of people extremely happy. I am not around to watch it live so the download is important. Download speed is great and your show is great as always. Remember for every complainer out there there are at least a few thousand of us really happy viewers. You guys are great.

I like the table, the simple black background has a nice break with the addition of the LCD screen w/ logo. Maybe add one more variable to the background so it looks a little less bare. Lighting really sucked on the guy at the far right. Nice shirt on John and camera was perfect distance from him. I find that the Twit cameraman takes waaaay too many high def. closeups which is not necessary (he looks younger on DL shows than Twit or is that some playboy soft focus lens DL uses?). You have to get rid of that 'behind John angle' and try some new ones. Maybe more two shots when John is talking to the guest closest to him.
The intros were sort of muffed again and need to be worked on as well as both sides of commercial breaks. Those descriptions like Dot.commie and such were great ideas but the longer ones like Splog have to be left on for 2-3 more seconds and I would change either the words font or size so its easier to pick up than the rest of the text. I also dont think fading out of those description into a commercial works as well as a simple cut.
That Norm McDonald lookalike has body language that puts me in a coma. The middle guy. C'mon, you re his friends right? Is ANYONE going to tell him about that hair? Anyone? And to top it off, he not only has the same 'do but also the same voice as my 8th grade teacher Ms. Baker so I really couldnt see past that although he did give a very good answer about UK RFID chips just to have John ask the same question about kennels.
I really think the last guy, Sparks, was on the show Wonder Years, you know....the kid with glasses they say (erroneously) grew up to be marylin manson. All he needs is the tape on glasses and pens in his pocket and he could be a geek adonis poster boy.
Id recommend keeping the set as dimly lit as possible (maybe even candlelight!) and no closeups and you'll do fine.
Mr Smiles from pc mag was as good as on the pilot but like Steven Wright, only in moderate doses.
There is a need for a guy like Sparks every week who might not be a tech wizard but who knows the latest buzz words, web interaction and knows how to talk in 30 second clips.
Nothing worse than 4 geeks sitting around asking 'have you heard about.....?' and who dont know what the latest and newest fad is all about: makes you look out of touch.
Enjoyed the show and all the topics more than I thought I would. Big improvement from the pilot in the presentation department and I liked how all 4 people were able to participate in the Origami discussion and contributing in their own way. Ive heard many discussions over this subject and this one by far surpassed it because it explained much more thoroughly a lot of aspects.
Best line on this topic: "...they found a niche between a failing market and a shrinking market"
I'd love to hear this group discuss a 'XP on Mac vs OSx on other pc's and what possible consequences both will have' discussion with this group. Seems to me they could theorize a little more freely than some other roundtables. C.mon, you all know you want to hear this topic!
And yes, I agree with the poster above: Of all the shows yove done so far, ep. 1x01 is the best !!!
Fire that producer of yours, we hear he's a slacker!

Suize the speed of your computer has NOTHING AT ALL to do with the ability to download that file in 20 minuites! I could download the same episode on a 333mhz Pentium III with windows 98 and a 10/100 network card.
Don't confuse your bandwidth pipe with the performace of your PC! The ability to play H.264 instead of .wmv and using GPU rendering to playback videos instead of cpu is something competely different.

Remember when YOU posted this?
3) The Downloads For Episode 56
Will be available Friday.
Well, its FRIDAY 5:00 PM (PEE-EMM) MST which would be 4:00 PM (PST) YOUR time and still no show?! Isn't this even the time you would "normally" be live streaming if it were Tuesday or Thursday? And if I recall correctly (probably not), didn't you guys even say you PRE-RECORDED it?! So why so slow with making it available for download? What ELSE broke?
Sorry, to be so negative, but WOW! You guys are Tech Guru's (GODS to some even) and even YOU have techincal melt downs almost every WEEK! Is it a money issue because I can't imagine that it is a "technical" issue...

Big fan of Patrick and Robert and really enjoy DLTV. I like many others out here really appreciate what DLTV is trying to do but they need to get the cobwebs out of their system pronto.
It should be obvious that for all but the most ardent fans the frequent delays and problems with downloads as well as not having a hard and fast schedule of episode releases is frustrating and tiring.
I know you guys are bustin' your rears to get the show out ASAP but I think it is in your best interest to get this problem solved sooner rather than later even if you have to split each show into several chunks and get a set of multiple machines to process each data type and let them all crunch away in parallel.
The powers that be need to give Patrick more personnel and resources so that he doesn't have to stress about the technical production of the show. This would leave him more time and energy to create content for the show in an ever more competitive iptv environment. If Z.D. doesn't have the resources then Patrick should pack up his wagon and find someone that does.
A little harsh but although there is all this talk about anyone can do a grown up podcast on a shoe string budget are just drinking too much of the cool-aide as Dvorak would say. If the economics are not there yet to sustain these things then it would be better to determine this sooner rather than later. How long will it take? 5? 10? Years?

Hey I think the people that are complaining have never been in the position of responsibility for tech that has very specific up times. They don't know that you are putting more pressure on yourself than any of us do or have a right too. I remember getting calls at 2:00 am and thinking what is gonna be worse. Finding out about some family member being sick or dead or hearing someone from work saying everything is down. You gotta come in right now.
Besides I have a 128K line. I don't stream anything from the web. I just download it when I have about 5 hours.
I've watch you Patrick from your days on the screen saver and I feel confident that your level of professionalism is more than enough for this.
Keep up the good work.

Just like many others we tried to download dl.tv
Some tried ALL the links and was disappointed each time the link failed.
Rather than complain I decided to create a fictional conversation with an IT representive of DL.TV
Is this some cruel joke on DL.TV audience?
No.
Is this a part of a bigger problem?
Could be.
Does anyone is DL.TV doing something about it? Probably
Will this happen again?
Yup
What can we (DL audience) do about this crisis?
Be patient.
How come Robert acts like he's had one too many Red Bulls?
Good question. You should ask Robert.
Patrick enjoys off road and welding -- why doesn't he have a show that offers off road tips and tech, and include welding technology?
Good question. You should ask Patrick.
This ends todays fictional talk with a DL.TV IT guy. Next week we have a fictional discussion with Robert Change about operating cameras and sea sickness.

MPlayer - http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/news.html
I been using it on Linux for over 4 years now and have yet to find anything freely available to download off the net it can't play. It has great performance because I can download and play 720P videos off apples trailer site on my 800MHz-ish P3 Laptop
I've been using Xubuntu lately and its a snap to install.
sudo apt-get install mplayer w32codecs
There are several front-ends for windows now that you can get, I recommend MPUI. It's the best i've tried and I can also put it on my USB pendrive so I have a usable media player at any windows computer I sit down at.
Download MPUI-1.1.8_with_MPlayer-CVS-060330.zip and unzip it then make a codecs folder on the same level as the MPUI.exe and drop in all the codec in the second zip archive I posted below.

I continue to hear on TWIT how regular television is dead and how IPTV will reign supreme. People will be leaving network television in droves and move to content that is more targeted to them, like TWIT and DL.TV. This always cracks me up. The thing about network tv is that when I put it on NBC at 9 pm Thursdays I KNOW I will see The Office and that nothing will stop that from happening (unless the president decides to give a speech). IPTV has no such set schedules. It's up whenever the content creators feel like it (or when their connection actually works). It's also strange that a tech show will be released for download a day after it's streamed live; a show that talks about up-to-the-minute news is released a day late for mass consumption. I find it laughable that anybody would suggest that network television is dying when there is such low standards as to when a show is released. Inconsistency breeds resentment, which drives viewers away.

Anyone notice that Patrick looked a little sweaty in the last half of ep. 78? May I make a sugestion? Get the goom to 62 and then start the show. I know it will seem cold at first but.... cold makes you alert. Builds character. Also... Robert has lost weight. Good job! I hope he is not smoking... only loosers smoke. Pats wardrobe is getting better. But as for Robert, no non button collars on button down shirts please... it looks gross. Collars must stay upright at all times... Oh maybe try a polo with the collar up... that's how I roll.

The wmv feed was updated but the XML feed for divx is not yet updated. Just thought I should let you guys know so you could look into it for possible errors. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for having multiple players, because I couldn't get the WMV file to work until yesterday, lol. DL is moving forward, pretty soon dl tv will truly be saying "ALL YOU BASES BELONG TO US". World domination is just around the corner!

Everyone who complains about the show download delays needs to to chill, you have no right to complain, you are part of what's wrong with this world today, take, take, take, me, me, me.
Shut your selfish appreciative trap.
But if you can do better then my all means put up or shut up.

Easy to get links to files in many formats on demand or "live" DL.TV and Ziff-Davis are wonderful. The BBC news site is a pain in comparison. special video players and podcast downloding software if they had anything important to say or their sponsors something to sell i didn't see it.
Keep up the great show. (Fingers are crossed that you get a cable TV contract.)

I'm glad you posted the other links first. I download the DivX for long term use, but I always download the wmv first. That way I can get my immediate fix since I rarely get to watch the live show. So post em as you get em.
Keep up the good work!

Thank you very much to all of you who produce direct host and run dltv. Keep up the good work! Dont listen to the arrogant, selfish pukes who are allways CRYING about something wrong with the show. Too many spoiled people on this planet right now.

Hey guys...ever thought about encoding into Theora/Vorbis...a very nice, patent-free (not to mention high-quality) codec combo that's easy for newbie Linux users?
Just a thought.

Whoa! That is some machine you got blazing there. Core 2 Duo?
I also had a thought, if you happen to have a lot of Macs laying around you could turn on xGrid on them to speed up the render time for the H.264.
Thanks for getting it out this fast!

Holla,
Another is to use the same personal information with a different first or last name.
Generally speaking, gift cards and certificates can be a good present in some cases and a bad one in others.
And, along this line, pay attention to the wattage rating of the power supply included with the case.
