Yay! It's Thursday and I'm ready for another fine-blended edition of DL.TV! I hope this episode doesn't cost me money, lol! I bought that Lexie Barnes laptop case from yesterday's show, lol! It's just what I've been looking for! I watched Patrick's review of it over and over today, lol, and every time I saw that bag I liked it more and more! This is something I can carry every day as a briefcase with or without a laptop in it. I have a couple shoulder bags that are just too bulky to lug around every day. This one looked sleek and well-padded; and, it's on sale, lol! So, hopefully tonight's ep will be free again, lol! ;-)

AVS is the place everyone should go with an interest in TVs, Audio, Cable, Sat ... should head to.
They have local area TV threads as well, so that if something goes wrong you can find out if it's just you or not. This came in very useful today when TWC had a peculiar problem across the country.
You'll also find the engineers from some of your local stations hanging out and posting occasionally.
UK Peeps should head over to AVForums.com for a similar experience.

This is not a "norm" for TriCaster like any piece of electronics things do happen but NewTek prides itself on providing excellent Technical support and warranty service. If you are having a problem with any NewTek product you should send their tech support an email at techg@newtek.com with your phone number and they will take good care of you. Most RMAs have turn around time of 24 hours. They also ship the unit back to you in the same way they received it so if you ship it overnight the ship it back overnight.

If you are having problems, I'll personally help your church out! VT[4] is a great product and if configured correctly, runs flawlessly.. Many of the pro-sports arenas across the country use VT[4] during EVERY game.. It's also used on Access Hollywood, Entertainment Tonight and the Insider...

Thank you philip, I have passed your contact info to the powers that be. As I'm just a volunteer at the church. Though I'm not convinced software can replace the reliability of hardware based solutions. Though software can possibly provide more flexibility and cheaper solutions. I guess that is the real trade off between software and hardware solutions, reliability vs. flexibility/cost. There is also the advantage of revenue stream, Selling upgrades, software support. When you buy hardware you own it free and clear. OOPS! Sorry about the rant.

All my computers have ran or are running some form of linux. I found the Linux segment very intresting.

does anyone know an easy step-by-step site that can show a super newbie how to get XGL working on Suse?

I just started playing with linux last winter and I wouldn't call it useless at all. I've tried probably a dozen different linux distro's and there are some that are a real pain to get working, but the top 5 or so that are on distrowatch.com all seem to install & work pretty well (Ubuntu, SuSE & Mepis are my favorites).
Maybe linux isn't a part of "most" people's digital life; however, if Windows was never advertised and was never talked about on any news programs would it have become a part of our digital lives?
I've installed Vista beta 2, and was less than impressed with it's eye candy compared to Xgl's. But, the more noticeable thing to me after installing Vista beta was that I couldn't do anything productive with my computer until I put a bunch of software on it that costs $$$. With most linux distros I get dozens of useful programs included and can download thousands more quality programs at NO COST.
Besides, what can you do with Windows that you CAN'T do with Linux? I use both and so far, other than the limited gaming support on Linux, haven't found anything I can't do.

Linux IS a part of our digital lives, most just don't know it. If you surf the web at all then you are using linux via many of the web sites that are hosted on linux servers! Without linux much of the world wide web wouldn't be there.

In the usual business structure, a source, Nike say, creates something, a distributer, Sears say, buys it from them, and makes it available to its customers who reimburse Sears for the item and all the distribution costs.
In the Internet world, Google, Yahoo, and others create something, Verison, say, pays no money for it at all, and makes it available to their customers who reimburse Verison for the all the distribution costs but not the cost of the item since Verison got it for free.
If Sears, Wall Mart, and other major distributors baned together and told a source that it would have to pay for having them as its distributors, they would be engaging in extortion, and would be subject to severe penalties since this is a criminal offense.
However, when Verison, AT+T, and other major Internet distributors ban together and request that their, free, sources have to pay for having them as distributors, people actually take them seriously!
Teddy Roosevelt must be spinning.

So now everyone has a 3-D interface, but all they are is a distraction. I realize those "cool guy" effects are kind of neat, but wouldn't the time used on creating l33t-braggx0r desktops be used improving stuff that actually NEEDS improvement? All 3 major desktop OSes still have plenty of REAL short comings, but rather than fixing any of them, this next 2-5 yrs looks to be the generation of "smoke and mirrors".

For the most part I agree with you on this; however, there a couple of features on the Xgl 3D interface that I found DO make my everyday use of my OS quicker and more productive.
1) Windows draw much faster.
2) Window transparency allows me to constantly monitor one app while actually using another (without Alt-Tabbing).
3) The Scale mode (F11) makes it quick and easy to find the right window when I've got more than 3 or 4 open at a time.
4) The Zoom feature (Super/Windows Key + scroll wheel) is extremely useful in that it works with ANY/ALL apps and is faster than using the zoom feature that is built into some apps.
5) The cube itsself is very useful when multitasking & switching between apps & screen layouts. For instance, I can have my web browser full screen on one desktop, my web editing software full screen on another desktop and the Gimp layed out for editing images on a third desktop... then I just press Control-Alt-L/R to switch between them while I build my websites. That's not just a "cool guy" effect for me, that's better productivity!
Instead of just complaining about what they are not focusing on, how about suggesting what kinds of improvements you would like to see made?

What happened to the new set you guys were building? If I remember right, we only got a 30 minute episode like a month ago because you were building a set. There hasn't been any news or info given on this lately and i'm kind of interested as to what is going on where that is concerned.

I've used SuSE quite a bit in the past, but had been playing with Ubuntu's Dapper release lately. I'm glad I caught the dl.tv eps regarding OpenSuSE and XGL. I just installed it, and man, does it look pretty. I'd say it's a bit too early to try without an Nvidia card, ATI support is sketchy. Also, the better vid card, the snappier the performance.

I can't get the water to start. I push Shift+F9 but all that happens is performance goes down the tubes. I have an nVidia 6600 LE (yes LE stands for Least Efficient, my computer store cheaped me out of the 6600 GT). Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I give it a 9 for physics coolness, but a normal file browser is much more efficient for dealing with files than trying to emulate a real-world messy desktop. What kind of a hit does it have on normal system performance? And how does it improve efficiency? Looks a bit tedious to me.

In case anyone is wondering, Xgl is not exclusive to SuSE. You can get it running on most linux distros, i've done it on both Ubuntu and Mepis as well. Just search the user forums of whatever distro you are using for Xgl. Also, make SURE you have 3D working before you try to install Xgl.

I hope you guys don't edit this out again.
AVSforum is 50% bottomfeeders (cheap bastards), 20% industry shills, and the rest are cool AV enthusiasts/geeks. They have lots of good info, but so much filtering and so much $$$ influenced BS and AVS sponsored shills in the background.
I recommend you add the new Pioneer to your comparison, Robert, and please quit raising your voice to jump into the conversation over Patrick.
I would do the comparison out of the box and then after standardizing them. Look for pixel response. The Panasonic and LG panels have slow black to white to black image retention. The Pioneers are better, but have noise issues. Some units do an aweful job at 720P vs 1080P even though 720P is closer to their Native rate. To be extra thorough I would tell us if the units accept a 1:1 pixel mapping.
I would also appreciate you guys going over a little more more hardware in your episodes, but that's just me.
Great work BTW. Please, please, please don't turn into product shills unless you really like them.

- Work for a big-boy company.
- Get support from mature, knowledgeable people instead of the "lol u n3wb. rtfm imo" crowd
- Drag & Drop installation of my projects (props to Apple for giving MS this idea)
- gaming
- books that aren't written for operating system programmers

It's interesting to note that DL.TV's parent company, Ziff Davis, collects and shares personal information about it's registered users. And any information that is garnered from other companies is added to your personal information retained by Ziff Davis.
Sounds an aweful lot like AT&T to me.....I won't be holding my breath until I hear Patrick chastize his own employer for doing the same things he chastised AT&T about.

I'm bummed you didn't show some of the actual useful Xgl features.
I have been using Xgl and compiz for approx 5 months now and it would be very difficult if someone were to take it away from me now, in fact I may even shed a tear.
Some of the useful features that I use everyday are:
1. Scale. Similar to the expose in Mac. I end up with a lot of windows open all the time and the scaler makes it easy to find the one I need. Also when you invoke the scaler you, if one of the windows is actively doing something you still are able to see what is going on in that window, for example if you had a video playing you would still see it going on or an active web page that is changing content. Very nice
2. The cube. yes multiple desktops have been around for ever in X but with the cube it's just more fun :)
3. Alt+tab. highlights the window that you tab to which makes it easier to find the window you are after
4. Another cube feature. Pressing ctrl+alt+down unfolds the cube so you can see the current, the next and previous workspaces at the same time and then left or right arrow to get to that workspace.
5. The zoom feature. The zoom feature would have made it a lot better during your show so that we could have seen what you were trying to show us rather than trying to zoom the camera in on the monitor.
6. View in all viewports. They need to name this one better but you can right click on any title bar and make that window viewable in all workspaces. For example I make my Gaim chat window viewable in all workspaces which makes it easier to maintain the conversation.
Just a few thoughts

Gotta love MS fanboys, they assume anything beyond their little personal sphere of knowledge is not worth anything.
Windows installation is the *worst* I have ever seen, you double click somthing and files get spread all around your hard drive, some not even removed when you try to uninstall, what is even worse is, the files often get put into system directories!, its like some kind of nightmare, except people think this is normal.
Your l33t speak sounds very much like Gamers to me, not really anything to do with OS discussions.
Rest was just drivel.

None of your responses really address my question: "Besides, what can you do with Windows that you CAN'T do with Linux?"
- Work for a big-boy company.
WHO YOU CHOOSE TO WORK FOR DOESN'T REFLECT THE DIFFERENCE IN CAPABILITIES BETWEEN OS'es.
- Get support from mature, knowledgeable people instead of the "lol u n3wb. rtfm imo" crowd
OBVIOUSLY YOU'VE NEVER BEEN ON THE UBUNTU FORUMS. THERE I DON'T EVEN USUALLY HAVE TO ASK A QUESTION, BECAUSE SOMEONE HAS USUALLY ALREADY WRITTEN A "HOW TO" OR HAD IT ANSWERED. WINDOWS HELP HAS ALWAYS BEEN USELESS TO ME, THE ONLY WAY TO GET TRUE KNOWLEDGEABLE HELP ON WINDOWS IS TO PAY MICROSOFT FOR IT, OR SEARCH THE NET TO GET YOUR ANSWERS.
- Drag & Drop installation of my projects (props to Apple for giving MS this idea)
NOT SURE WHAT YOU MEAN BY THIS? PROJECTS FOR WHAT?
- gaming
I ALREADY MENTIONED THIS MYSELF.
- books that aren't written for operating system programmers
ANOTHER POINT THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE DIFFERENCES IN CAPABILITIES BETWEEN OS'es.
So, do you have any points (other than gaming) for what you can do as a matter of productivity and daily work on Windows that you can't do on Linux? I'm not against Windows or it's capabilities, in fact i'm in it writing my response. I just don't see any valid reasons that you've given to put Linux down.
I initially started looking into Linux because I believe Microsoft's prices are getting out of hand. However, once I started using Linux I realized that it is actually a very capable and viable OS, especially given all the free open source software that is available along with all of the advances that it has made in the last year or so.

They usually post it at about 1 EDT or 10 PDT, kinda a nice time for me though b/c its 12 noon CDT so I can download it and watch it over my lunch break
Also, has anyone noticed that the requirements for Glass for Vista are acutally quite low? I've got it running on an old system wonderfully with an Athlon 2500+ and a GeForce FX 5500
