Episode 81 went Live at 4PM PDT, July 27th.
The full show notes minus the video processor questions:
Great MP3 Encoder:
- JD's on the hunt for a better MP3 encoder than WMP or iTunes, hears that the LAME MP3 encoder is great, but doesn't want to roll with its command line utility.
- No worries: there are tons of easy to use GUIs that sit on top of LAME so you don't have to go near a command line:
- Exact Audio Copy is an awesome tool for making high quality audio.
- Razerlame is Robert's fave front end for LAME.
- dBpowerAMP is pretty slick, and offers tons of codec support (tho' you have to pay for MP3 support these days.
Stuff:
- Reviewing Sony's Sony HDR-HC3. PCMag's Terry Sullivan gave it an Editors' Choice. Great video... but be forewarned: there's no mic jack, and the manual controls are a bit... odd.
- A good 'real vs. CG" test? George says he's got one for Robert,
Autodesks's Fake or Foto? It's pretty disturbing. Anybody seen a test like this for Photoshop hacked photos? Let us know!
- The Return Of Sam and Max!!! Darren Gladstone stopped by from CGW to give us the scoop on our favorite freelance police duo. This time... this publisher... it's really gonna ship.
Interview:
Viewer Questions:
- Bluetooth headsets and VoIP clients like Skype: we've got info for Chad.
- You had a ton of questions about the Whitehourse video processor/scalar Robert uses in the lab!
We'll have those questions and links (from HTPCs to dScaler to cheap alternates to the Whitehorse) up shortly.
News:
Comments being censored?
- Wha? We started moderating comments (which means they don't post to the site until we approve them) yesterday on this page after a spate of folks posted pretending to be Patrick ran amuck in the feedback. We always pull spam, info that's false, or particuarly nasty personal attacks on
our guests/staffers. Beyond that, it's pretty much open season out there. BTW, if you email us at dl.tv@ziffdavis.com we'll do our best to explain why we do what we do. Comments are back to being unmoderated again.

Even in the forums!?!? It seems that they'll be no shelter here! (sorry Rage Against the Machine ref, just came to mind) Apparently, theres a bit of honor lacking here. Sheesh! These guys make the show (for Free for everyone) and put all the effort in. Perhaps we'll have to start logging in soon, instead of the free open post system? The more people mess around the worse it gets!

One problem I have, when you say the show is live or available download, I get confused what time/day you say because of the time difference.

The guys do the show at the moment for free, but I, for one, would be happy to pay 5 bucks a year for a comment posting account.
If public comments were restricted to subscribers then at least the cost of sorting out the idiots would be taken care of (you do something stupid, you loose your account with no refund), and Patrick could use any extra money to buy a new backdrop that doesn't look like it's part of a tin shed :) :) (Preferrably one that helps the encoders - all the different light levels on the current tin shed backdrop have gotta hurt) :) :).
All that said, emails to the guys, should, as always, stay free.

agreed, minimal need for complaints about releasing the show. But the continuous comments about how the show is free are getting absurd. The hosts are getting paid by their employers. The show is free for users in the same way that broadcast television is free. The users/viewers are getting the content in exchange for being exposed to advertisements (site ads and in show ads).
No matter how annoying it is, we have every right to complain about stream problems and sporadic download postings, the argument that it is free and everyone should shutup doesnt hold up. Until there is consistancy, complaints will continue.
please, stfu about how its free and how we should be greatful that the hosts give us a show. Keep in mind that we in effect provide them with jobs.

Let's get this right out in front: It's FREE.
Wow. Really? I guess I should stop logging in with my VISA card. Yes, we KNOW, it's FREE. How does that excuse a lack of tolerance for criticism, disappointment, etc. when Patrick, Robert, and DL.TV fail to deliver on their word? Oh, that's right& It's FREE. Yes, I suppose it is, isn't it. Thank you for that bit of news.
Even if something is FREE, that certainly does not excuse nor does it exempt that person or thing from criticism. Here's a recent example: On DL.TV's home page, it says The next episode of DL.TV streams live Thursday, July 27th, 2006 at 4pm PDT, 7pm EDT, 23:00 GMT/UTC, and will be available for download Friday, July 28th.
Simple enough. It emphatically exudes confidence and competence. It doesn't say We're really gonna try hard to stream the next episode of DL.TV on July 27th, 2006 at 4pm PDT&but we're not really making any promises, you hear& So when the show actually turns out to be ARGUABLY the best slide show ever and NOT the promised live streamed show, why is it so hard to be tolerant of individuals who tuned in and were utterly disappointed and left remarks to let Patrick and DL.TV know about their experience? What's that you say? Oh right, It's FREE! Hmmm& There seems to be a bit of a disconnect, but okay, thank you for the information about the show being FREE.
Strange, I don't recall anyone who posted criticism asking for their money back. I guess the word must be out on this whole FREE thing you keep talking about. It might also be practical to mention that when one gives their word, they should either keep it or expect to be criticized when and if it is not kept. I'm sure if you failed to keep your word with your wife, husband, or friend you would be summarily and deservingly criticized for it, correct? Even if your word involved doing something for FREE, right? Wait, what are you muttering about over there&oh right, the show is FREE. Got it. Thanks.
The point is this. The FREE thing is not at the heart of this issue. What really turns people off is someone(s) who either can not or do not keep their word. In short, if you say you're going to do something, then do it. If you don't, expect to be criticized. Period. But it's FREE! Thanks again for that. Perhaps that should be the chorus of the DL.TV theme song.
As for excuses, well, they're just that excuses. Nobody wants to give them and nobody wants to hear them. Yes, things do happen, but that still does not mean you're off the hook. If you give your word and don't keep it, expect some criticism (even if you've got a fistful of excuses). But it's FREEEEE!
Yes, I suppose it is, isn't it. You have been a well of knowledge on this matter and I can not thank you enough for all the information about the show being FREE. Thank you.
Oh, and don't worry about this posted criticism. Since Criticism is NOT tolerated at DL.TV, this post will disappear before you can say It's FREE!

No PSP support isn't dead, but they had a show last week to simply use "PSP video 9" to convert the show for a PSP.
What is dead for the PSP are UMD movies, since sales are poor because they are over priced with lower quality, and have no "extra features" that DVDs have. Cheaper to just buy the DVD and rip the movie off of it for your PSP.
I've since traded my PSP for a Xbox 360. Only real reason why I wanted a PSP was to play the new GTA title at the time. PSP is still cool, but it's getting too limited in it's use.

I agree with your point, but did you have to post it twice? And who said DL.TV doesn't tolerate criticisms? They ask people ALL THE TIME to e-mail them and tell them what they like and DON'T LIKE.
Sure they are moderating posts in case someone poses as a ZiffDavis employee (ie Patrick); they are not deleting criticizing posts... hell you're TWO POSTS are still up you dork!
I've seen a lot of stupid posts on here complaining and criticising about the delay of the download link, and they haven't been deleted. So please Sam, drink some decaffeinated soft drinks, cool off, and go do something else instead of camp in front of your PC waiting for the episode to be posted. There's more to life than DL.TV.

Get real, its obvious that they get paid to do the show. From what Patrick and Robert have said, they also do other things that they get paid for @ ZD.
They are getting paid to post their vids right? No vids no checky.
So, its freakin free and hopefully will be for a while.
Complaining won't help them "grow", crissakes they're not kids! (well for the most part ;) )
Unless their lack of posted vids is going to cost you money, why bother complaining? How long does it take to take a quick look to see if the bloody vids are up yet?
Quality of a live stream is different, that is feedback they need and for the content of the show that is also feedback they need to hear about.
They've been encoding the show what..81 times now (amongst other things I'm sure). There is at least a finite amount of time it takes to encode to all the bloody formats. Hardware/server failures affect us all, no one is immune.
So, basically, give feedback where they can actually do something about the situation, otherwise its just useless static.
DLTV's medium is the freakin internet, its not cable, satellite, or a network tv. If you've read my posts before, the internet breaks. Unforseen things happen.
These guys have the appearance of caring about the show, I believe it to be true. They're not looking for a way out of getting it done, they have fun doing it!
How many of us can say we enjoy what we do? Not many I'd imagine. So when I can see someone is having fun reporting about and enjoying the same things I like, why would I want to shoot them down? EOR (End of Rant)

Besides commercials, Sam and Max was the first time I just forwarded through the crap. Guitar Hero was interesting Sam and Max was stupid as the game was 12 years ago.
Robert is clearly on his knees for AVS.
Why wait for Oppo to use HDMI out when the Panasonic DVD97S clearly is doing everything well now (firmware's been updated?) Also, HDMI out should be 480I ouput if you have such a great processor (most likely implied.)
Again Vantage HD does the same as White Ho'se and the NEC Theater Synch. Wait on the Lumagen or DVDO units. Lots of these companies use the same platforms, but some do regualr firmware updates.

Even though they love to do this, they also have bills to pay just like everyone else. It would be totally pointless for them and the staff to work as hard as they do and not get paid for it. The info these guys share with us would be worth paying for, but instead DL.TV is generous enough to broadcast these shows to us for free. That's why when people complain about a delayed show really need to be a lot morw appreciative that these shows are free. there is no justification to complain about something that is coming to for free.
P.S. For people that are pretending to be patrick norton on here, do yourself and everyone else a favor and get a life. It's not only sad but it's also pathetic.

Am I the only one who thinks the complaining here is quite ridiculous?
I'm not going to point out that our hosts are getting paid for all this (and does that change anything at all, anyway?), but In the other hand shouting (or typing in caps) "OMG, I HAVE SLOW DOWNLOAD SPEEDS!!oneone!1" isnt the way to go at all.
Sure, stuff happens, but how about being *calm* and informative when pointing this out to them?

You mentioned a complaint about your new studio in episode 80. It was only THEN that I realised that you had "finished" the "remodeling." Seriously! I'd been wondering why it was taking so long to remodel. In epsiode 80, I discovered that you were done remodeling. Wow... Your set now looks something like the unfinished floors and HVAC areas of the high-rise in Die Hard. The bad corner behind Patrick looks especially tacky.
Here's an idea: put up a big, flat, blue wall behind you and use chroma keying to put anything you want there. This is a tech show after all.
Anyway, love the show regardless of the scenery behind you.

Keep that content a comin! :) Good Job!
As far as the set goes, if its to your guys satisfaction and makes the atmosphere for ya then stick with it! :)
To that end, I'd have to agree that not everyone will be pleased at all times.
Chroma-keying/bluescreening would be cool, but I don't think its a matter that will cause a loss of viewers if you do or don't (or change the set at all).
It kind of reminds of Quake 3 Arena, lots of flash, but I didn't enjoy the gameplay, where as Unreal Tournament '99 didn't have all the flash but feel it has amazing game play.
