Episode 82 went Live at 4PM PDT, August 1st.

We pinballed thru a selection o' topics on the show:

Stuff:
  • Ageia's PhysX physics accelerator for gaming. Worth the $300, or spend you gaming dollar elsewhere?
  • Belkin's Wireless G Travel Router: a palm full o' 802.11g routery goodness (The Linksys WTR54GS Wireless-G Travel Router with SpeedBooster is pretty sweet, too.
  • Yes, Adam, the US gets a lot of the cool cell phones well after they've hit the streets in the UK or Japan... and 550 (US $1040) sounds steep to us for a PS3 pre-order.
  • And for everybody that's emailing... yup, November 17th is the US release date for the PS3. We forgot.
802.11n:
  • "Should I buy a wireless router now or wait for the real 802.11n?" asks Hal from Sioux Falls, SD.
  • The answer depends on whether it's for a business that needs industry standards, or if it's for use just in your home... and, yes, there is a performance difference between Pre-n and Draft-n& and both smoke 802.11g.
Questions for the DL.TV Crew:
  • No HyperTerminal in Vista? Mark's looking for a "good open source terminal emulator" to replace it when connecting to the console ports on routers and switches.
  • Know a good open source/ad-free utility for printing PDF files? email Robert!
News:
  • E3 Downsizing: The biggest party in gaming is going small.
  • Dell Investigates Second Laptop Fire
  • Hi-Def Add-On Coming for iPod: why?
  • Animaniacs Vol 1 on DV.... woot!
Iceland:
  • Baldwin from Iceland was miffed, but we're cool now He thought we were mocking Iceland's broadband penetration in episode 81.
  • No way. We love Iceland! We were mocking US broadband penetration!(Tho wiring a country of 300,000 is easier than wiring a country of 300,000,000!)
  • Iceland's EVE isn't quite #2 behind WoW in popularity: check out MMOGCHART to find out just how many folks are playing your favorite massively multiplayer online game

Hi Mike.
There are a million and one reasons why streams lag on 802.11 connections. The first thing to mention is that when packets are transfered between two devices with 802.11 there is a lot of over head. For ever single TCP packet there are two other 802.11 packets sent between the two devices, called a request to send, and and clear to send, then there is a 3rd to say I got the packet. These packets are limited to a speed of 1MB/S. You could write a theises on this topic. Basically, streaming anything, or anything with many small packets (Quake game for example) is bad over wireless.
This is very geeky, and technical reading, but you might want to try this:
http://caia.swin.edu.au/pubs/WITSP04/nguyen-armitage-WITSP04.pdf

It concentrates on 802.11b but the details can be applied to 802.11G.

I wouldn't be so hasty to say that firefox's new build is the problem. Can you see any of these?

They said this at E3 damit, November 17!

And the PS3 is not expensive if you care about HD video, but for the millions of people that don't see the purchase of a $3000 TV in their near future it's very over priced. But then again the 360 should be about $50 cheaper too.

Quoted from Mozillazine forums: "If a web site is not streaming windows video using a playlist, it will not work in firefox's latest version or in opera 9. However, if the video uses a playlist (asx), it will work. So, the success of streaming windows video using firefox 1.5.0.5 or opera 9 is dependent upon how the web site has coded their video."

Well, good night all, I'll have to wait to download tommroow..

Hello Lads!
Looking forward to watching the show tomorra! :)
I was wondering if you guys have had a chance to see a Core 2 "Merom" notebook in action yet? I've been a diehard AMD fan since the K6 series. I strayed back to Intel and suffered through the Intel P2 and slot P3's. When the Athlon's XP's came out I was Thorobredly re-hooked ;) Then the 64's. I've not built an Intel system since. The Meroms sound reeeally good :) It would be kewl if you guys could get a hold of one for review or lowdown on them. Thanks!

I would have thought it would be available a couple of hours after the live feed.

Intel claims the the new Core 2 Duo mobile chips on laptops can support up to a 5 hour battery life even with a movie and a game, but I'm still waiting to see some raw data on that. I can't believe that it would hold a 5 hour charge if you were say watching a movie for 2 hours and then right after that still have battery life left to throw in game and play it for another 3 hours before the battery dies.

Intel showed a clip of doing just that on a plane from cali to ny, but i'm really wondering how long did they play that game for, what gpu they had in the laptop and at what game settings they were playing it on.

Posted by: H0witzer
August 2, 2006 9:40 AM

I guess it depends on the game (or the definition of). Hearts for three hours on the plane woooo hoooo.

Posted by: SteelCity1981

LOL they showed them playing hearts, but they also showed them playing a FPS game that looked a lot like UT 04 or Doom 3.

I recommend PDFCreator which is available on Sourcefourge. It is free. Open Source and udpated regularly. There are no watermarks or other "gotchas" that other free programs have.I like it a bit better that CutePDF (which ain't bad). If anything, it might give you too many options.

Take care,

they do a bunch of encoding from a raw video file to make the downloads the best quality. I've hard Patrick say on the show that it takes hours to encode the h.264 version.

The terminal programs I like are (pay for) SecureCRT or CRT form Vandyke.com and (free) Putty and (free) UniTTY 3sp.com. For free I would definitely recommend UniTTY.

I haven't tried any of them in Vista but would think they would all work.

I'd suggest the PrimoPDF driver available at http://www.primopdf.com as alternative.
It's free and no ads and gives me enough options for my needs and works well on both my W98 and W2K systems (although diff vers used).

Great show, though the H.264 seemed a bit slow at first. It could be because I'd just installed QT 7.0? The rest of the vid seem to play very smoothly and in sync with the audio. Good Job!

I do have a question regarding your target audience. The segments for "Sam and Max" and the Animaniacs DVD tend to make me think, perhaps, you're looking for younger viewers. If so, so be it, no worries! The Cranky geeks aren't too old, I guess...

On another note:
UT2K7 Delayed!
Sad to hear this, I was really looking forward to getting this for Christmas. Heres a link to the news:
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6154971.html
Guess I'll just have to keep playing UT99, since 2K3 and 2K4 do nothing for me. 2K7 is supposed to be a savior, I'll settle for a first coming.

The following is probably wicked old news to those into IPods..

On another note, I just bought an IPod Shuffle for my fiance and I'm quite impressed. Impressed not only with the sound quality and Itunes software, but the size of this thing. Its not much bigger than my usb memory sticks. The pictures I'd seen of it before buying it were quite pleasantly deceiving :) I bought the 512, as we were limiting the spending on gifts for each other. I put 19 songs off of a Chicago greatest hits cd and it compressed it all very well. Theres like room for 4 or 5 (depending) cd albums. If only I was an audiophile and not a pc hardware junky...

802.11a is today's solution for greater throughput and capacity in small areas with significantly less interference (12 non-overlapping channels at 5 GHz.)

I've posted this before, and I'll post it again, until Patrick realises that the N81 isn't the first 3 megapixel phone. The Sony Ericsson K800i (NOT the W800i), 3 Mega Pixels, more features than the N81, is cheaper, and available from mobileplanet.com in the US.

I'm not an employee of Planet Mobile, Sony Ericsson, or have anything to do with either company. I'm just trying to get Patrick to give up on the Nokia adverts.

It's always funny for a Mac user to watch all the hubbub about making PDF's. In OS X, the temptation is to make everything a PDF because it's just Command p and presto anything can be a PDF, including the frame of a QT movie. That whole Adobe TV ad campaign about " few realize how easy it is to create a PDF" was initially puzzling to me because I had heard so much from Windows users about how Mac and Windows were just about the same. Yeah, I guess until you want to make a PDF.

Robert mentioned on the show that the cost advantage of the Xbox 360 over the PS3 disappears when you factor in the HD-DVD drive. First, rumors have it that even with the price of HD-DVD drive there will still be a 360 price advantage of $50 (nearly insifinicant, I know), but, second, he is ignoring the fact that the HD-DVD drive is OPTIONAL. You don't have to have it to play ANY 360 games, but with the PS3 you're stuck paying for the Blu-ray drive even if you don't need it. I'm guessing that a lot of 360 owners won't bother a winner emerges from the HD-DVD/Blu-ray battle.

Another item of note is that the actual hardware of the PS3 is different between the basic and fancy versions; no matter how hard you try you can't upgrade a basic version to the deluxe version, whereas you can with the 360 if you need to. So, for example, if you want an HDMI output, you HAVE to get the $600 version. And that is a lot of clams.

The PS3 is indeed going to be a very cool console, but it seems like there are more and more obstacles to its success. Between (1) larger number of games for the 360, (2) the year head start on game development and sales, (3) the higher cost of the PS3, and (4) PS3 game developers being discouraged due to the above, the PS3 has an uphill battle before it will do well. Until the price comes down and there are a lot of games, there probably won't be many early purchasers other than the 'early adopters' and parents of insistant teenagers. I can't see the average consumer being interested.

Thanks to Patrick and Robert for putting my question on the air!

I was at Radio Shack, why I don't know, and they had some deals on some G Linksys routers, the 108mb ones BUT they said they were getting in some N routers the next week. I'm sure they meant Pre-N.

Any wireless routers out there worth doing wireless LAN parties with?

I bought the BFG PhysX card when it debut, and I have to say it was a total waste of money. I'm not selling it though as in case a future game (ie Supreme Commander) can take advantage of it, it may be of use. Also I'm 100% sure, unless you have money to burn, and even if you do, the Asus 256MB version is a total waste of money.
