  • Never printed to a PDF? It's like printing to a document on your desktop, instead of a physical printer.
  • Most of you recommended: CutePDF Some folks prefer PDFCreatorPrimoPDF was also popular.
  • Other ideas? Use something with it build in, such OS X, OpenOffice, or Office 12! (Well, when it ships.)
Viewer Questions:
  • Intentsly wants to know when the new Merom notebooks will arrive&We've got a rough date, and NoteBookreview has a good preliminary list.
  • What's making video playback shake on my monitor? What kind of tech would we buy if $2000 fell out of the sky? More!

Why do americans think they own the world and have different time zones to everyone else?

Greenwich Mean Time has been the World Time since 1884!!

San Francisco would be GMT -8 hours (so 16:00 "PDT") would be 00:00 GMT! not 23:00.

I love the show... but come on guys!

Posted by: SteelCity1981
August 3, 2006 6:25 PM

GMT time is a theory, so you can't be ignorant enough to point something like it's some sort of fact considering no one knows when time first begain on this earth, because gee I don't know people weren't around 4 billion years ago when the earth was formed maybe.....

"unable to establish a connection to the server"

hit the magic button called "details" and get the following..

"The computer that you are trying to access this file from is too busy to handle your request at this time. This can happen if the computer is not powerful enough to handle a large number of connections at a given time.
Try to play the file at another time when there isn't as much demand on the computer to provide files."

Why do Britons think they own the world and have different time zones to everyone else?

Coordinated Universal Time has been the World Time since 1972!!

San Francisco would be UTC-7 (so 16:00 "PDT") and would be 23:00 UTC, not 00:00.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UTC
Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is a high-precision atomic time standard which replaced Greenwich Mean Time on 1 January, 1972 as the basis for legal civil time all over the Earth. UTC has uniform seconds defined by International Atomic Time (TAI), with leap seconds announced at irregular intervals to compensate for the earth's slowing rotation, and other discrepancies. The leap seconds allow UTC to closely track Universal Time (UT), which is a time standard based on the earth's angular rotation, rather than a uniform passage of seconds.

We love you and love the show Patrick, but Pournelle spanked your and Pirillo' baby butts on TWIT.

Posted by: Al Sutton
August 4, 2006 1:59 AM

Pournelle spanking PN, I think not!!!

Pournelle seems to have reached the age where you beleieve computing is as good as you need, and seemed to completely miss the point that if you're playing games you want realistic physics and greater world complexity.

He also missed the whole server side of the argument. If I can buy cheaper, faster, more efficient machines I can offer better, faster services to more customers over the net.

Thankyou for playing Mr. Pournelle, enjoy your retirement, now hand over the mantle of up to date commentart to John C. Dvorak.org/blog

I smelled smoke - yep I have an idea (prolly mentioned in way earlier episodes by someone else..but here goes)

Would creating a uniform way for viewers to rate content topics and video quality/delivery be useful or just overkill? I mention this after seeing BobSam's posts, where he puts comments after each of your posted topics. That could be easily put on a webform. Hmm, of course, it would become a problem if the same people were rating/voting under different names, then the data would be skewed. That would probably prompt a need for logging in and such. Just a thought for more feedback to you guys :)

Some people are more about filling out forms than chatting in here or sending emails, in my opinion (ok, I'll use the webspeak: IMO)

On a Thankyou Note:
I can't wait to hear about the Meroms! :D
If the money tide doesn't go out, I'll be able to get one. Ehm, this would be used for Home and Travel use, of course! N'er would I hook it up at work to the non-corp net connections ;) (-the internet we provide to customer engineers so they can hook up their laptops outside of our intranet)

Sounds like another finely crafted info infused parlay! I'll look forward to it in the morrow (well now today). Thanks Guys!

Thanks Guys, for the NoteBookReview.com Merom link! I'll keep a look out, especially for Lenovo flavors! I like their keyboards and sleek looks! :) Though I did like my Dell Inspiron 8100's keyboard, it was the 7.1 Lbs that made me wish for a lighter one. (no, it didn't blow up - it got stolen ..while at work, right around the time of a layoff... :( )

PDF's
I think I'd found cutePDF afore, but, at the time, was looking for a way to annotate an existing protected pdf that I did not create. I wanted to make suggestions for correcting errors and note some aesthetics issues.
If you guys know of a way to do that (without having to crack the pdf's password), that would be awesome!

Office Automation:
What all are you're feelings about TabletPCs?

Where I work we do a lot of filling out routers (a step-by-step procedure form) for the assembly of military comm antenna systems and use routers to track the assembly. Its pretty tedious to say the least.

I think that TabletPCs could help automate the input process and eliminate tons of paper. Using digital ink also allows for correcting errors and not having to print a new copy of a page. Of course when dealing with the government agencies, efficiency takes a back seat to ehm "traditional" methods (pen paper handstamps). Then there is of course the cost of implementation, wireless connectivity issues and security.

I think its great that the Medical industry (hospitals etc..) have embraced this technology. It just makes sense, so long as there is redundant backup power and data backup systems in place.

Great show, once again!

Hi Guys!
I was surfing a bit on Google on another tab in FireFox 1.5.0.6., I left my desk... to go do some work ;) and when I came back there was this Firefox Pop-Up dialog there.
It asked what do with a file named:
AD_presentation.ppt
I didn't think to do a screenshot of it :(
The address listed on it was:
http:\\www.nhsp.com
This DLTV page was loaded on the other tab.
I clicked cancel on the dialog, I didn't want it hanging around.
As far as I could see on Google, theres a nhsp.com.cn and nhsp.com.ar.

Did a search on the filename and it comes up with a cyrillic url:
http:\\company.expres.ua\pdf\ad_presentation.ppt

I reversed the slashes so no one would click on it.

It may be a legitimate file, but I'd rather not find out. I don't believed I clicked on any ads anywhere, none that mentioned a presentation of any kind anyway. >:(

Any ideas? Thanks Guys!

Did you Google search the filename? It came up for me as the one listed above, though that one ...could be legit. Being the popup of questionable origin, I don't think they'd want a valid link pointing to it. If it comes again, I'll get a screenshot. With all the zero-day attacks, I wasn't about to touch an unknown .ppt file. Thanks!

I thought that CutePDF did a good job of giving one the option of not installing USave, which I did not.
Why did you?
Can you not read?

I agree Guest, its not about me nor is it a place to throw raunchy comments and not a place for an ad for some sports krap. I made the comments about people who were not adding value to this forum/show, by doing the aforementioned.

In a different light, it is kind of nice to chat amongst posters and express opinions. You know, a collaboration of ideas and questions.

I did not install USave. It has still been tagged and I was hoping they might address this real quick on the show or somewhere on the site.

Another reason Guild Wars might not be counted is because it's argueable as to whether it's an MMORPG. Players don't all play within the same world most of the time (only in cities are they together, and even then it's got several channels for each).

Also after playing the game for about a year I can tell you the game has gotten to be utter crap.

I thought you might want to know that a product you recommended tries to install the "trojan.dropper.win32.agent.asf". Specifically, Acro software offers the "CuteFTP Companion" along with CuteFTP. However, the adware WhenUSave is required for the companion to work. When I tried to install WhenUSave, my copy of F-Secure (with latest virus definitions) alerted me to the presense of the trojan within WhenUSave's setup.exe file.

Acro's response? F-Secure, one of the most respected security products on the market, is a "cheap security application".

It only took me ten minutes to find out that Acro is malware, based on the trojan and their extremely unprofessional attitude. Maybe you guys want to actually investigate a company before recommending it?

Next time I'll take any advice from your show with a huge grain of salt.

(I've fwded the entire correspondance to DLTV as proo.)

I downloaded and installed you CutePDF.
It set off Defender (which nothing does),
McAfee AntiSpyware and Spyware Doctor.
It set them all off. Was that a test or what.
The one I sent you didn't move a thing.
Thanks testing my Spyware Software.

Really enjoyed the introduction of the Nabaztag bunny device on your show. With much of the support and API resources written in French, I was motivated to launch an English website for Nabaztag owners to swap info and stories. You can find it at http://www.nabaztalk.com

(If you haven't left a comment here before, you may need to be approved by the site owner before your comment will appear. Until then, it won't appear on the entry. Thanks for waiting.)
