We shot Episode 84 live on Wednesday August 9th at 4PM PDT (7PM EDT, 23:00 GMT/UTC) instead of our usual 4PM Tuesday time slot. The show will be available for download Thursday, August 10th.

What's on the show? Viewer questions! Big honking piles of them:
  • Extended warranties: good or bad, asks Brett?
  • Allister asks "What hardware do I need to connect a Cable TV box to a Media Center PC? What type of interface will I have? "
  • Can I get an adapter for my old ATA drives if my new motherboard has SATA ports, asks Jason?
  • CRT to LCD... will I notice a difference, especially if I use a DVI connection to my computer? We're on it, Ben.
  • dot19408: is looking for help setting up an email server over his home DSL line... we say let an ISP handle that... but email us with your suggestins for whether dot should try to run Sendmail from home.
  • Rich wants to know the proper way to pronounce Linux. (We've got the word  from Linus thanks to Paul Sladen.
  • Allister asks "What hardware do I need to connect a Cable TV box to a Media Center PC? What type of interface will I have? "
  • Jason asks "If I get a motherboard that has SATA connections,  can I get adaptors for my old ATA drives?"
  • We had a stack of URGE questions to follow up on... Ty adn Jeff were especially curious about what happens to the tunes you download after the 14 day free trial ends!
  • John from Iowa wants reccos on a long distance WiFi setup... it depends on how far = long distance!
  • Converting CDs to Vinyl? Kelly's on a mission! Companies like CustomRecords can make short runs of records for you, but they aren't cheap.
  • Nate's more geek than you... he tried dropping a Core 2 Duo (Merom) procesor into his Core Duo notebook... and gave us the heads up on what happened. Thanks Nate!
  • What about live phone calls on DL.TV???

I am confused. In what universe is the next episode of DL.TV streaming? I am a little disappointed that I will not be able to view the live stream on Thursday, August 9, 2006 because this date does not exist in this universe. I am also disappointed that I will have to wait until next year to download the show.

If this is any excuse to fire up the core2 and rush out one version, I dunno what is. Get the show out tonight so you're not messing with it and the live show tommorrow!

Man I have no luck with warranties, it's damned if I do and damned if I don't for me. It's like if I don't buy an extended warranty on something the product has no problems during that exsteneded warranty peroid, but if I don't buy an extended warranty on a product something ends up going wrong right after the original warrenty expires!!!!

Just FYI guys, the "from Linux" link goes to http://dl.tv/blogs/digitallifetv/www.paul.sladen.org/pronunciation which doesn't pull up anything. It probably was meant to go to http://www.paul.sladen.org/pronunciation/ :)
Great show guys, looking foward to it!

I have to admit this show is worth waiting for and I've just been browsing thro some of the older 'show comments' about people complaining how slow the output is..When infact this probably shows how much people indeed like this show..There seem to be a few people out there who may be ignorant of the amount of hard work P.Norton puts in..Anyhow..Im not here for arguements just thought I would post and show my acknowledgement of your hard work you do every week and not just for this podcast..

So, I guess there will be no live show today...therefore no show to download tomorrow? Where the hell am I going to get my DLTV fix? One show in a week just doesn't do it. DLTV is just sooooo good that I need at least two a week. Preferably more. Now I'll have to save todays download for the train ride to Boston on Saturday.

BTW...I think being able to call in and talk live to Patrick and Robert would be way cool.

August 10, 2006 2:37 PM

There is a live show Thursday at 4PM.

The links are fixed... including the one to Linus saying "Linux."

>>Taking longer and longer to upload an episode,
Dude, what are you on? The shows go up the day after they're shot... that's when they're promised, that's when they're deliverd. Unless something major goes wrong... in which case, we get 'em up ASAP.

>>big company like ziff davis cant afford
>>some decent encoding machines?
ZD isn't that big: about 1/5 the size of Cnet. And our encoding machines are pretty hot. The encoding tools, Sorenson Squeeze and Quicktime Pro could be faster tho!

Squeeze doesn't support dual processors: they'd love you to buy a $15,000 PCI accellerator, tho, till multiprocessor support is built in. Quicktime H.264 looks AWESOME, but takes forever to render, even on a PowerMac G5 Quad... waiting to see what the new Xeon powered desktops deliver in terms o' speed.

BTW, if you see the shows posted before 9AM EST, it's caused somebody hit the office between midnight and 4AM to post the show.

Just thought i would drop a good suggestion for an email server. It's free for personal and commercial usage. Provides unlimited domains and users. It also has a very decent administration interface that will help you setup and lock down your email server. It features spam protection as well.

MailEnable Standard Edition
www.mailenable.com
Windows XP/NT/2000/2003

BTW: Great job guys and hope to see lots more episodes on the way.

Definately get the longest protection plan you can afford when buying a dell laptop. I have had techs out to my house 4 times since i've had my laptop. This is probably a good rule for any laptop becaue you move it so often.

so Pat, why'd you cut Robert off? was there some time limit or something? should've extended the show for a bit since you made us wait an extra day. anyways, good show. no shorts please!

Q. Can you download the whole URGE catalog during your free trial and KEEP the songs after the trial?
A. YES

I used Tunebite to keep my free tunes from Rhapsody.

Tunebite lets you record copy-protected music, audio books and video clips in WMA, M4P, AAC, M4B and MP4 formats by playing them and save them as unprotected MP3, OGG, WMA, WMV or MPEG4 files you can use anywhere!
Tunebite legally frees you from the hassles of DRM copy-protection!

Enjoy Guys

Tunebite is the best. I also used it on all my free tunes from Rhapsody(over 700) and can play them on any computer or burn them to cd. I think I only paid about $18.00 for the program and ended up with hundreds $$ of music.

Excellent! I've heard that Linus doesn't care much about how people pronounce Linux, but I do. ;) As a Finn, I can say that you guys got it quite right. The first vowel is pronounced as a short 'e', not leenooks... And definitely not the way most English speakers say it, not like the letter 'i'.

Thank You very much for caring about the right way to pronounce Linux. Personally, I prononce Linux as Linux.

I saw this in a ehm computer mag back in 4/06 that I shouldn't mention on a ZD site ;) They had gotten an AOpen brand laptop kit.
Its called the AOpen 1559 and it was not for the faint of heart to assemble even for the tech savvy person who did it. If you wanna get your Hard Core Geek on, this would be a testament to it! They came to the conclusion that, for the model they bought, they had gotten a really good deal. Of course at the time, it was only single core. Perhaps theres other kits w/dual!

Great show Guys!

I was wondering if there was any particular reason as to why board makers of sound cards, videocards, etc put the parts on the side that faces down in tower cases. Is this to help against interference from the powersupply, or is it to help trap the heat below the cards? Asus actually has made videocards "upsidedown", model EN6600Top. Doesn't this sound like a cool idea? Thanks Guys!

Bunny under the desk you cant see him!

And I hate vinyl I don't see why people like it I think it sounds really really bad. AM all for old stuff I still have atari and NES carts from when iw as a kid, but I never owned vinyl and I do not see the point.

When I was i kid we had "tapes" then shortly after CD teddy ruxbin, ghostbusters what ever it came on tapes.

Tapes was bad like vinyl but once i got CD we never looked back now there is the dead DVD audio that is better than vinyl and now there is a bunch of other options.

What is the point? that is like going back from DVD to VHS I have a soft spot for VHS but ill never use it again.

Posted by: LewisC
August 11, 2006 2:21 PM

There is no such thing as legally stripping away DRM, I don't care about what it says on the tunebite website! If you're making copies of protected media, whether that be VHS, DVD, CD, or DRM music it is always illegal. This is the Urge equivilant of hooking up two VCRs to dub a tape, nothing more.

I have been running linux in our company since RedHat 6.1 for the Alpha DEC. The best solution I have found to configure and manage my linux and Unix servers is a freeware call Webmin.

http://www.webmin.com

Webportal that allows you to configure just about everthing in a linux server.
Includes configurations for Procamil, Qmail, Sendmail and SpamAssassin Mail Filter.

You guy should consider a report on this package.

Posted by: Seth
August 13, 2006 1:18 AM

I would recommend Qmail. It's so much more secure. Something people should check out though is http://google.com/hosted

Google will host your email for your domain, provide spam filters, and a webmail interface. I'm not sure if they provide SSL but the best part is that it's all free and you don't have manage the server but of course how fun is that?

Contrary to your experience with Verizon, I have had very good support. I upgraded to the LG VX8500 this week. Impressive but it died in two days. What happened was the menu started cycling through the options. I suspect the keypad was having a problem. Started on the 3rd day. I took it to a Verizon store and they checked it and verified the problem and replaced it on the spot. The whole thing took about about half and hour. Good service and support. Been with them for several years. My contract expired at the same time the LG was ammounced so I got one of the first. Also upgraded my wife's to the Motorola V3m which is really nice. Did not expect that phone to have the features it has with Music and bluetooth. Very nice phone.

The Chocolate is cool but yes the touch controls are a little bogus. You have to pay too much attention. It does have a lot of features. Basically it is a Nano with a phone and bluetooth. Side by side I would pick the LG because of the convergence featuresand speaker that the Ipods don't have. I have a Shuffle that I use riding the bikes.

Just starting to explore the bluetooth with Bluesoliel adaptor. SPP and Push support. Both phones work with it but it looks like the V3m only has DUN support.

What I really am jazzed about is the bluetooth wireless audio. For the bike and now looking at for music as a wireless in-the-ear monitor. (Nothing to do with the phones). A transmitter coupled with a receiver that you can plug in a regular headset for sound. Cool...
