I watch on a Mac in Safari using the Flip4Mac plug-in. Normally, the show just appears in a small box in the middle of a Safari window...

This time, the guys were stretched out to fit the entire Safari window. When I resized the window, so did they. Really weird, never seen that behavior before!

The stream then quit on me too finally, like others are reporting.

is it legal for me to download a windows xp cd if i already own a license cos i have kinda scratched my cd to hell

Posted by: Mike 2
August 24, 2006 8:13 PM

Technically, yes, what you are doing IS illegal. But frankly, who's gonna catch you? Unless you have a sue happy microsoft law dept guy staring over your shoulder, go for it.

Posted by: You
August 24, 2006 8:19 PM

Jake: I believe Microsoft replaces licensed CDs for a small fee. Check with them if they still do that. If not, the whole idea of software being "licensed, not sold" actually protects you to an extent because destroying the CD does not void your license. Basically, you are legally allowed to have a copy of Windows, so where you get it from doesn't matter as much.

I usually download the show the day after and I NEVER read the comments so today I thought, "Why not?" Ah, who cares about the stream, I'll just get the show tomorrow. But why, WHY, do people keep posting that the stream is dead? We all KNOW the stream is dead! Stop it!

And Jake--that's a loaded question. The short answer is yes, it is legal. The long answer will end with "probably not." What you purchase is not the cd but a license to use the software. So if you own a license how you get it onto the machine shouldn't matter. So--did you purchase a (full) license for XP, or is it an oem preinstall where the manufacturer gave you a cd? (If so, how did you get that lucky?) If not, was it an upgrade? If you paid full price for the copy you own (as in you bought it, as they say, 'shrinkwrapped') you will probably not have problems with MS. If it's an upgrade and you own a (shrinkwrapped) copy of an older version you are most likely in the clear. The oem license won't transfer to another machine so if you are installing it to the same machine you should be okay. Otherwise it is undoubtedly illegal. Moral of story? Take care of valuable disks.

True. IF you bought a copy of windows. Buying a computer running an oem licensed copy is not the same thing.

Jake, when you say you own a license do you mean you purchased XP shrink wrapped?

It has been answered that it shouldn't matter to you where you get the version of Windows that you are licensed for. However I do not believe it is legal for someone else to distribute copyrighted material without the express written consent of the copyright holder. If you download a Windows XP disk image, you may be an accomplice to a crime.

Hi Guys!
Great show! I did have some slide show moments and I'm the only one working at the time, everyone else has gone home (3rd shifting). So, unless my shared memory onboard vid card here at work is sucking, there might be some bandwidth problems somewhere. Thanks Guys!

ATI drivers seemed to have left me quite angry in the past. The only card that seemed to work well for me was the 9800, near 0 downtime. So, it seems their drivers have come along way. I'm still not convinced to buy ATI though. I will say that ATI's colors do not seem as washed out as Nvidia. It was painful to go from Voodoo that had the best colors on display to Nvidia. If the drivers are solid and perhaps if I saw someones rig running a newer ATI card with no hitches, I'd consider trying one.

As you know I've a sordid CPU history, graphics cards are no exception:

1st was a generic card with a Trident chip

2nd was a Matrox Millenium that was too flaky for much of anything

3rd was an older ATI card -not memorable enough for a model number

4th was a Voodoo3 3000 - got me hooked on First Person Shooters

5th was a Voodoo5 - a little clunky with some huge video input cable thing

6th was a Radeon - flaky at best, but looked good when it was working

7th was a PNY Nvidia Ti 4600, which got me hooked on Nvidia.

-Radeon 9800 in my ex g/f's machine worked well, twas an experiment :)

8th ASUS Nvidia 5950, which rocked until it seemingly
died - an electronics friend got it working again
and he still runs it today playing BF2, amazingly!

9th XFX Nvidia 6800GT AGP, present card still Kicks ..butt!

10th will be something SLI'ish

..whew! I wonder why I had no savings... :D

I have a rather jumpy video card history.

There was a thread on the PA forums asking this not too long ago, so I'm just going to post the chronological line here from first to latest (Note: the last two are on my current rig):

Cirrus Logic Video card -> Voodoo 2 -> Radeon 8500 -> Xpress 200 Integrated -> GeForce 7600 GT CO

There is absolutely no consistency in the amount of time we have to wait before the episode is encoded, you'd think that because all episodes are about ~45 min and the encoding platform is the same ( I guess), we'd have some predictible release time interval.....NOTHING
As much as I love the show, this gets on my nerves, you guys gotta fix that, sthg with the process is definitely wrong.
N.B : To the stupid morons who are going to mention that the show is "free", a gentle remindr that network TV is also free...and episodes of "lost" don't start at different times...every week

understand that it may not be possible at this time to
get something better. Plus the fact that Pat has said

Sami- Network television is NOT free, save for over the air broadcasts, and remember, even then, there are FAR more advertisements on network television shows. Yes, release times are inconsistent, but hey, we get this fine blended show for free. Patrick, Robert, and everyone behind the scenes do an excellent job, and they deserve every cent that they make. We, on the other hand, just need to be patient, or look for the not-so-distant future of having to pay for our downloads, so that they cover the cost of the, "huge, honkin' bandwidth bill".

Posted by: Sami
August 25, 2006 1:27 PM

--They'd have no huge bandwidth bill if they chose to release it as a torrent (and yes there ways to count downloads, they're just too lazy to do it).
-- They can post the fastest to encode format first, Fanboys and format-fanatics can "wait" a bit more.

Posted by: Leo
August 25, 2006 1:42 PM

I agree with sami, but, I think dl.tv should say downloads will be available the next evening instead of the next morning or afternoon. Also, I think they should just skip the live feed which would cut costs and maybe make the show longer. What do you think?

Posted by: Victor
August 25, 2006 2:04 PM

they should not have said "Ep 89 will be available for download Friday! (If not in the wee small hours tonight)" what this says is the download would most likely be ready thursday night, or EARLY friday morning. it is now 11am in the afternoon their time and there is still no downloads. the wait would not be so bad if they gave an accurate estimate and i wouldnt have to refresh page so many times a day expecting the download to show up.

Doesn't anybody have this thing called patience anymore?

True the networks can get their shows to air on time, but the difference is they have huge budgets and major sponsors. This show on the other hand is still a work in progress. They are trying to please the fans as much as they can, but they dont have the hundreds of thousands of dollars the major networks have to buy the latest and greatest equipment. And maybe you dont remember the long weekend Patrick put in a few weeks ago just so we would have that episode.

I want to see the show as soon as possible, but I do have the patience to wait for it to come. Just remember "good things come to those who wait".

Networks can get it right, YOU THINK...??

But they AIM 6 months ahead...AND still cant figure out that Baseball and football RUN OVER TIME, and your Favorite show AFTER, probably WONT get shown.
THIs is live, and repeated.

HOW many are OLD enough to remember LIVe TV??
Ooops, you said WHAT??
OOOPS that machine didnt work.
OOOPS, I wasnt supposed to ASK THAT...

Unless you are willing to WAIT, 2 weeks for this NICE folks, to get 4+ shows ALREADY done, and POST old news, SHUT UP..
Until you are willing to HELP render and EDIT the show, LIVE...SHUTUP
Unless you are willing to UP FRONT, start a INTERNET Distribution HUB, YOURSELF and keep it CLEAN, and keep your Access CLEAR....SHUTUP..

I wish they would just do 3 versions... WMV, IPOD, Quicktime. That is enough. It would get the vids out faster. I don't see the point in making 10 versions of the same video. People will watch it on one of the 3 because the show is good.

Iv seen what HAS been done, and can be...
and I REALLY know what it takes to Edit, format, and THEN change the video formats..
why dont ya try something..
After the first edit, POST the RAW file up. LEt them have fun, with a 1+gig file download..Let them TRY to have all the programs needed, and a system with ENOUGH power to convert it.
THere ARE OPTIONS, but that shouldnt be discussed HERE..as I dont know your full setup.

Hey guys!
Whats up?
I watch the Divx version of the show. I watch it on a 32" Zenith HD CRT through my HTPC.

I couldnt help but notice the wide shots of both of you were blurry and almost out of focus.

When the camera shot turned to a tight head and shoulders shot of either one of you it was clear and crisp!(great PQ)

Just wondered what was going on?

Sami-

So, is this better machine that they can get to encode going to just materialize out of thin air? It takes money to buy such things, and budgets are tight. I'm a production technician for stage, concerts, theater, and TV, and let me tell you, the production budget, or lack thereof, is usually the last thing that anyone ever thinks of, when it comes to money for productions. Hell, in the corporate world, the IT guys are usually begging to get better equipment, especially in schools (for which I have been a network admin for).

Also, as is evidenced by posts like yours, if they put the fastest to encode format up first, there would be people, like you, either bitching about the quality, or whining that it's not the format that they prefer to use. I personally enjoy having the different formats, though, I do use the h.264 the most, as it is the cleanest looking on my TV that I watch the show on.

Lastly, there is no real slam-dunk way to host the files via torrents, and be able to track how many people are viewing/downloading. Yes, it can be done, but it can be easily foold, cheated, or otherwise manipulated. I suggest you read up on how torrents work.

so many broken records.. too much attitude.. no patience..
too much narcissist ego inflating..

To Sami,ECA etc..

If you have to tell people to shut up, because you may/may not know more than everyone else, then why bother spewing it all over if not for self flaggelation? People, generally, don't appreciate negative attitudes.
Basically you are putting people off that may not have
the full understanding of the situation that you might
have, nor the resources you portend they should have
before voicing an opinion.

Pat and Robert do this for money, but they can go and
make money doing other things. This is fun for them,
which in turn makes the show better and worth watching.

If you have suggestions that you'd not want to discuss
HERE then send them an email - as they have suggested.

Helping one another learn about things and sharing
ideas at all levels would be something that would help
end the pointless ranting etc.. that can be frustrating
to read here.

Understanding, tolerance, and patience would only
benefit everyone. Attitudes, egos, and impatience
just brings everyone down. Lose the Hate!
It leads the path of the Darkside... ;)

I used Mozy, and it works great... BUT they send you spam (only 1 email a week and its easily filtered out of your inbox).

I use Carbonite.com, its 5 bucks a month and gives you unlimited space to back up your stuff. So far I am at almost 50 gigs.

I prefer the mozy interface but mozy gets more expensive if u have large amounts of data

Inten..

yes this is a jojb, and an avocation...
But can you do a job when it requires you to Depend on other services, other people, and equipment that May not always DO what you want, when needed.
Have you ever faught a video encoder? Hardware or software??

You want a few hints??
Easy ones are:

Take pictures of back grounds, and SEE how they compress. Pick something that looks nice, and compresses GOOD. Look at Camo like colors..NOT green, just shaded in the SAME Hue.. They compress REALLY well and can reduce the video size, AND add contrast. But this also depends on the compressor as much as anything else. Metal is cool, but can be to SHINEY and can ADD to the compression.

audio must be kept, ALMOST uncopressed IF possible. compressing audio can destroy it..Use 1 Omni directional mic, OUT front, and 1 behind to pick up your audio...On person mics, arent EASY to balance, and just the movement of your head changes the volume.

I would LOVe to see you goto Direct to HD/computer recording. You dont worry about how much room you have, you can record it in ALMOST any format, and have AT LEAST 1 format out in afew hours, after edits, or a RAW in 1 hour...IF you can afford the bandwidth.

Lighting, is fun AINT IT...Its better to be alittle BRIGHT, then to dark. you can add contrast during EDIT, to cut back the light.

3 camera...1 on you, 1 on the other guy, and 1 for panning...Focus at the distant, and FOCUS..Then pull back, and its set... You can MARK the camera focus for POINTS of zoom...Makes it FAST and easy...Use tape or NOTCH it..and MARK the spots on the table IF you want to dispaly something.

Drapes and HEAVY curtain can cut Echo and background sounds, ALOT.

You did well in cutting down shadows, but I dont know what you are using as lighting. i found that MANy cams work nice with alittle IR installed, as it brightens the pic and dont ADD heat

Posted by: ECA
August 29, 2006 3:40 PM

another point,
Not thinking you are tech stupid..
Is color depth.
you dont need 32bit color, when 8bit/16bit/14bit/any bit shows as much, IF your compressors can handle it, CUT it down.

Frame rates..
60fps isnt any better then 30...and 20 can save you ALOT of file size. and considering that most persons use a computer...640x480 is decent at 90dpi, even 85dpi..
I dont know the math for figureing your FPS with only the BPS.
