Tokyo Game Show, Holographic Drives, Your cheap hosting reccos!

The Deets:
NEWS
• Holographic data drives from Maxell
and InPhase Technologies not coming to your notebook soon. (BTW, the 1.8 inch drive in the new 80GB iPod uses perpendicular recording. Thanks Danebert!)
• Cheap web hosting reccos from the DL.TV Crew:
1and1.com was the most recommended, followed by
DreamHost. We list six more in the show.
• Rob thinks we hate the PS3, and wants us to talk HDMI 1.3!
• Why don't we encode over multiple boxes when we're live to cut down the time you have to wait before downloading DL.TV? We've got an answer for Bill!
• Oh... BTW, Jordan in Michigan is selling his car on Craigslist... careful about hitting SEND to ALL! Email us if you're near Grand Rapids and need an 89 Honda Accord.

You can use WMV on mac, windows allows QuickTime to be the WMV player, go to The new Media player center, then you will have two options choose the second one.

I love the show... just one question: Why is CrankyGeeks always posted for download way before this show? I would guess that it is the same people doing the rendering and posting... if not, find out what they do to get the show up sooner!
With that being said, it is well worth the wait! Keep up the good work.

Can't capture live via firewire? I've done it before. You could save some time in your work flow by capturing the show live. Rather then waiting till after the show. Then trim it and send it off for rendering. Just use a firewire bridge. Connect it to the output of the deck you are already using for recording the program. Connect the box to a spare PC (OK. finding a spare PC there may be a problem) and capture. I've done live capture on my Pentium M 1.4GHz laptop at church w/o a problem. And I was even capturing it to an external hard drive also on the same firewire bus. Never missed a frame.

This is the problem with vidcasts, netcasts, whatever... you must keep the feed working or else you lose fans. Loss of viewers means no ads. No ads mean it will go away. IpTV is awesome but not mainstream by any means. I am going to watch TV now.

RE: Hosting Reccos
I just wanted to inform anyone interested in Yahoo Hosting to look elsewhere. I chose Yahoo because they offer MovableType blogs (similar to dl.tv software) at no additional charge. However, their support is terrible!
I was unable to get SSI working properly using .shtml files with .htm includes. I had it setup this way on my prior host and all was well. I was tired of messing with the site, so I sent them over the code snippets and asked what I was doing wrong. My response was this, "Yahoo! Web Hosting does not provide assistance for advanced scripts like SSI. I can only imagine how frustrated you must be with us at this point, Please accept my sincere apologies."
What's up with that? Anyway, I eventually found my problem, but I'm wondering why they are so reluctant to provide reasonable support with their plans. Even hosting companies I consider sub par have provided better support.

THE best place for Jim Louderback (and other vintage tech geek hoarders) to get mechanical, buckling spring keyboards would be
http://www.clickykeyboards.com.
Huge stockpile and historical archive and lots of variants of IBM model M goodness.. brand new in original box and fully restored units.

A small suggestion, I would like the running time for the mp3 version of the show to be listed on the main page. Since it's not, I have to manually check my MP3 player for the runtime.
That's it. Great show all-around.

Ok, I am very disturbed by the recommendation of 1&1 for website hosting. I've had endless problems with them. I have had countless downtimes, many of which have lasted more than 24 hours. When I tried to contact them about it, they were completely unresponsive. The only redeeming value was that they gave me 3 years of free service, which ends soon. I will not renew, they have not earned my business. I have moved to dreamhost.

hey - another good web server (used by bookmooch.com) is an old AOL open sourced server (http://www.aolserver.com/) - limited support for scripting languages though - TCL and C which will deter most... ;)

I like powweb.com. 7.77 a month and you get 20,000 MB of storage, 5 SQL databases and 400 GB of data transfers per month. Easy update pages without uplading or downloading.

Thanks for telling us in episode 99 who does the best web hosting on the cheap. I always have heard the advice that you should NOT use the same web hosting service to host your domain.
So guys, who does the best domain name (preferably cheap) hosting service?

I Think it is kind of rude not to at least try to tell if show is going to happen or not. Somebody at DLTV should update the website and let us know.

Re. the webhosting, I use godaddy.com and pay $3-4 per month w/ no long term contract.
How did this NOT get into the show? Most of the ones you mentioned charge double that per month? Am I missing something here?
Great show, love it, keep it up guys. Oh, and try and relax more Robert, you get nervous and too talky. Patrick has that more laid back let it go and let it flow attitude, works much better.
