I'm really curious on what Robert will think of the Series3 Tivo. I'm a Tivo fan but very disappointed by how it looks on my high-def television, and the DVR from Time Warner is the crappiest unit I think I've ever seen, except from the box from Insight.

I'm glad there are 8 gig Nanos now. Finally a Nano that has enough storage capacity for my collection of music. I just hate the access time of my 5G Video, and don't really use the video functions. Though, the updated firmware gives 5G video users almost all the new features (except Search).

Tetris on the iPod. Pimp I say.

I thaught Rober was great, even if the show was short. I was only able to watch the show from the middle of the Tive Series 3 demo. Before that, it buffered so much I could only see 3 to 5 seconds at a time. The video quality was great!

I remember the old days when Robert was a lab rat Leo talked to once in a while on the old ScreenSavers.

Why not just have one video format, a mp3 version, and a flash version. The flash version assures that everyone can watch if needed. Stop making things more difficult than they have to be and stop wasting so much time on rendering.

September 12, 2006 9:43 PM

I'll d/l the show tomorra, sounds good so far.

Security
Why don't they make programs that just boot off of
cdroms/memory sticks?

They can do this with live-cds for linux distros,
why not make em application specific?

Office type programs would be in their own little world and able to interact with each other.

Networks would have some form of database of authorized
users using an encrypted cdrom/memory
stick/rfid/biometric device for access.

Access to stored data would still be available as
always and this would be even better because users
would be forced to keep your data separate from the
OS. Perhaps in an application created specific
partition.

I'm talking across the board, each one would have its
own OS of sorts. To play a game for example, insert the media
device and boot from it. Security would be
responsible by the maker of the software. An initial
subscription to game servers, that the software makers
would run, could be included in the price. Its almost
totally anti-windows, going back to the old DOS days,
but sounds so much more secure.

maybe someday peace of mind..

Brotherjames:
The show still must be encoded to be played on the flash player. Otherwise the flash player would be available during the live show, or right after the live show was over.

From what I understand they use different computers to encode each version, or at least they don't use the same PC for everyone. At least the quicktime version is rendered on a mac, and the WMV is done on a windows machine. The Tricaster it self is a windows machine.

Besides most users prefer to DOWNLOAD the video so they can do what they want with the file.

Perhaps, but its the price of security, no?

I'm sure the botnet bastages were grinning from ear to
ear, upon your reply...

I swear to the Gods that NOT everyone multitasks, let
alone needs a dual/quad core processor.

Where is the happy medium, asides from the gypsy caravans? Taint with MS, Linux, nor Apple is it?

So, how else do we put an end to the botnet monsters?
Its becoming an industry to infect other computers for money fe cornsake!

Kids are making serious cash, we'll not ever make in a year, off of this, c'mon!
Its more like they're shooting fish in a barrel than cracking a safe OS.

Vista's just a first 'try', with the memory
randomization. In the mean time, the bot army grows.

People with slow machines better start wiping and
ghosting. Change your passwords with something safe,
other than 'secret' or your favorite pet's name.
Start over people, cuz they'll be NO shelter here!
You've been keylogged, phished, hacked, backdoored,
botted and the Govt. can't even keep people from
brokering your information due to legal loopholes.

Just boot with a fresh OS every time, no worries and
the install only takes an hour or so. What the heck :)
True, Vista may take only 20-30min, not a bad waste of time ...everyday.

Will virtual machines, wiping and starting over be the answer for everything? BLECH! I say!

I would go for something like that. Primarily because the performance improvements would be, simply put - amazing. Having your computer run *Just* the game would give major performance improvements. Instead of running windows, whatever else is running, and the game.

the stream quality was great, but whatever reason, it kept choking. i don't know whether it's because my 1.5 DSL couldn't handle it or something else. Usually it works just fine. This time though, i was geting the dreaded "your system is to slow to play this file" with mplayer.

A few comments. The show's content is great.I depend on it to give me honest opinions on tech news and reviews. However, this Heron guy. He seems like a nice guy and all, but please he has the hosting skills of scared child. He's professional and knowledgeable beyond words, but he's got the charisma of a bag of bricks. Listening to him stutter through his sentences is in a word painful. If Patrick's not there, don't have show. I know they'll be people who disagree, put pleaae be honest with yourself, this show has been on for quite some time and Robert simply hasn't improved as a host. He should be relugated to special reports. A lab rat, plain and simple. I'm sorry, just my take.

Posted by: Paul
September 13, 2006 9:57 AM

Sorry William. Patrick dropped Robert in the deep end, else they'd have pre-recorded and I think Robert did a FANTASTIC job considering he isn't really a lead presenter. Patrick is the presenter and Robert is the foil and light relief. Hes half the reason to watch it, with his naughty comments that get Patrick on edge because of the DCMA. He did a stirling job considering, and though he stumbled occassionally, I think he did really, really well!

I guess I just have high expectations. I consider, like many do, this show to be the spiritual successor to the Screen Savers. I expect good entertaining hosts, great production value and informative content. I don't want amateur hour with a corrugated aluminum background in the studio. I want this form of programming to expand to VOD on cable; I want this downloadable to my Tivo, and most of all I want the show to be taken seriously. For an example of the way it should be done, check out the buzz report on C-net. Most people around here are like me, geeks. If the casual person found this podcast and gave it a download, they're opinion of Herron would be very similar to mine. If this type of programming is ever going to catch on with the masses and become a viable form of revenue for ZDNET, They need to stop throwing Herron on by himself and treating this show like some sort of experiment. Put some money into this, get a Leo Laporte clone onboard.

Hi Robert,

you forgot to answer part two of one viewer question: could you recommend an upscaling DVD-player for under $200?

Well, can you? Interested viewers (well, at least two, me and that guy who wrote the letter) are standing by for your answer. :)

When using SurfSpeed it shows my average speed at the standard tests at .20 Mbps which is about what other users are getting in my area according to the compare tests. Am I misreading this low number? Since even the lowest levels high speed internets advertise at about 1.5 Mbps download, this seems way low. I have checked the settings in SS to make sure it is set to Mbps (mega bits per second). The highest speed I saw at anytime was to my ISP (Comcast) at about 1.2 mbps. Could it be that these kind of numbers make a mockery of the advertised speeds or am I missing something. Does SS include upload speed into the calculation somehow which is throwing off the calculation?

Rob has recommended the Oppo dvd player on previous shows and it has received rave reviews.

Posted by: DLFan
September 13, 2006 6:54 PM

Of course, Crt's burn-in.
DLP's lag especially that Mitsubishi.
This generally has a small effect on firt person shooters.

You should wait for HDMI 1.3 if you want to wait ~ a year.
SED is a very long wait unless money doesn't matter.

Robert Heron is an odd videophile. He really is not very hardcore. He recommended that crappy HQV Realta processors, must have got something for it.

Be careful with the Contrast Ratio spec, it gets embellished. Color accuracy can be adjusted to a good degree.

I don't want to be too critical, b/c Robert did a very good job of keeping the show meaty and no deadspace or time and he did this alone.

I think Patrick was under the table, and he even alluded to it by pointing at the table when mentioning his name... J/K.

Also, the Oppo is a good player if you do not see the macroblocking. People should mention displays that don't work w/ these Faroudja based players if they are so obsessed with getting them ie. Panasonic plasmas.

I sell these units. Unfortunately, the Tivo to Go features and the E-SATA hard drive expansion are officially not features of this unit, but they are for the Series 2.
Robert should have mentioned this BS.
I have customers dropping most orders.
TIVO may add these on later, but then they may not.
W/ their prcing this is going to hurt.

Robert should have brought this up.

Those stupid low-res icons can be fixed easily.

You can call them at 877 367 8486
or check www.tivo.com .

Just a little misinformation that was spread about diskeeper lite and the built in windows defrag tool.

The built in windows degrag tool /is/ Diskeeper Lite. If you dont beleive me start up the windows defrag tool, and open up the About page, it will say diskeeper Lite right there. There really is absolutely no reason to use a professional/retail defrag program on a normal home PC unless you want to set schedules. This is simply because of the fact that the integrated windows defrag program (Which is a stripped down version of Diskeeper Pro AKA Lite) works just fine. It just does not provide scheduling/auto defrag functions.

The show was short and that's what lead to the supposed quality increase. Robert was that a review of the Tivo or a marketing pitch. Get your head out of AVs/Marketing Forum and go look in the Tivo Forum and you will see they know more about the product than you were willing to say.

Hey, what's the deal with definition on Apple's iTV? It looks to be a maximum of 480x. The movies sold at iTunes will be 640x480 resolution, that's been stated for sure. Please don't conclude iTV is HDTV because it has HDMI or Component out connectors. That means nothing. My old SDTV played DVD movies all day long at 480i using the DVD player to TV component cables. I'm seeing 480p is the maximum iTV resolution. Can this be true?
