I started an install company out of college, b/c I love HT. The internet killed margins and the ability of most people to keep mom and pop stores open. Installs just don't keep you growing. Retailers started marking up cables looking for any profit. Cables wokr to a certain degree, but everyone goes ape about the topend. What's wrong with a buck a foot for speaker cable or $20-25 interconnects, but no people want it for free? I am bitter, b/c online forums and society's values have really hurt the ability for my company to grow despite the ideal location. Internet purchasing is far too common for people to talk about how people are just bad business people. So, I am going to law school and thanks Patrick for explaining to your audience that MSRP or even 10-15% off MSRP is for suckers. In fact, margins are 30-50% off.. yeah on like 5% of items. Also, cables are completely BS, just look at these Audioquest stupid cables. The AV industry is screwed, b/c it's slowly receding everywhere and I am not weathering that storm. I think advertsing between segments of the show is bull. I normally forward through it or open up another page. Yup, a touch bitter and the show sucked Patrick. Vizio 50" umm that thing looks like crap.

September 14, 2006 9:53 PM

I could, at least, see it ;) Postage stamps belong on envelopes, not on a show that displays items they review. CPU's Does anyone else feel that the Core 2's are just not ready to buy yet? Video Cards Does anyone know of any Nvidia cards coming out with Gddr4 or anything to answer the ATI X1950? Home Theater Does anyone really have the money to drop on $1000plus TV's? Does anyone really get distracted by a little noise in a shadow? I think that video quality is a nice to have, but the cost gimme a break. A slight bit of light Rant Mode: Its a shame that todays movies rely so heavily on cgi , lack story, character, and have thin plots. Its like cgi has or is trying to replace the things that make movies "classics". I can recall movies where you never saw the "monster" nor the villain, but YOU could IMAGINE what it or they looked like. You know that melon we have attached to the tops of our torsos, its contains that imagination thing. Unless exercised, it gets lazy (cgi). I've talked to some people online, who (say) they can't picture things in their mind. I just wonder if all the inputs available today audio/video-wise is contributing to weaken people's abitities to visualize things. Dreaming..ah dreaming, we die if we don't dream. Is it getting so hard to find substance that we turn to what seemingly would be good stories from the past and yet cgi them all to death (think Wild Wild West and how over the top half the things were-and I didn't even see the movie). Eye candy with a good story, such as Lord of the Rings could have hardly ever failed. The story was strong enough to carry it even without the cgi. Though I think because the story was so beloved that the cgi was done with so much heart and caring. If only the Hobbit would come... Intentsly

September 14, 2006 10:10 PM

They do it for TV shows, why not for DLTV? People would actually buy them (to save having to d/l 95+ of the bloody things). Synopses of each show (Show Notes) could be displayed for each episode. It all just sounds like $$$$ to be made ;) Of course you'd have to figure out which format to encode them all to be playable on various home dvd players. Lest you use your TV to display your PC video already... Intentsly

Haven't seen the show yet but the comment regarding cables above may not be entirely accurate. If the rest of the audio system is up to the challenge, analog cables make a HUGE difference. The difference between Tara Labs Prism BiWire speaker cables and some $100/pr Monster Cables I bought is like night and day. The system loses all imaging, warmth and sounds downright "plastic" when the Tara Cables are replaced with the Monster stuff. Granted the system has to HAVE imaging, warmth, and detail to start with so don't try this with ANY Home Theater In A Box (HTIB)... you need real components to hear the difference... but it IS clearly there. Digital cables, on the other hand, either work or they don't. Get the cheapest ones that work.

September 14, 2006 10:40 PM

I think you are generalizing things way too much. There are tons of good movies these days. You must just be watching the heavily marketed ones. I agree that Wild Wild West was a load of crap. But, that is just one movie out of many. One recent movie that I have seen, and was impressed by, is V for Vendetta. Check it out. And as far as HDTV is concerned. I think it is well worth the price for the people who care about the quality in which their content is delivered. I have had an HDTV for about two years now, and I am saving up for one of the new Pioneer 1080p plasmas. It may be absurd to some, but it is worth it to me. And, yes, it drives me nuts when there is noise in any part of the picture. Peace, Mitch

Ehm, what timezone are you in? I'm in the Eastern U.S. timezone EDT, its already been aired about 3.5 hours ago. Currently 22:45 or 10:45PM here in Massachusetts, U.S.A. Intentsly

September 14, 2006 11:02 PM

I saw many ads for "V for Vendetta", but didn't hear of anyone going to see it. Usually if a movie is hot, I hear about it from others raving. I did not for that one. If you feel the need to save up to spend ungodly amounts for HD content, then you are amongst those few who can afford such things, not a majority of folk can. I'll wait til everything is switched (meaning foisted or crammed down our throats) over to it. As far as a slight bit of noise, yes maybe it detracts a bit, but, for the non-HD tube TV I have, I can live with it. Far more things to take care of before spending money on such things. Cable costs enough as it is, adding HDTV just doesn't make sense to me. I'm not an audiophile, nor-videophile, just an online gaming and computer hardware junky :) Intentsly

Why bring up the cables controversy and take such a wussy tip-toe side? We know PCMag's opinion and therefore we know yours potentially. Cables will be a thing of the past with more forms of digital transmission.

Posted by: ECA
September 15, 2006 2:37 PM

DUKE, the problems with woireless transmission, is FI everyone is doint it...SOEMONE will run over your channels/frequencies.. Even with ranges in the 30 foot range, it Bleeds to others upto 100+ feet. Then watch some GEEK try to amplify the signal just to get a few more feet, and the whole neibhorhood is recieveing his signal. Safe, secure, and direct is the best method, ASK Home depot, and their wireless system, with hackers outside.

Dl.tv now with added post production effects (or did they superimpose those in the live feed as well?)! Very funny. I like the the comedy voice stylings of Mr Norton, so the effects were a big bonus.

I played the Recorded File (Xvid) on my Sennheiser Headphones. Being a young fellow with very nice headphones, I typically hear anything encoded into an audio stream. It just so happens that in Episode 95, aloud, high-pitched, painful noise was somehow slipped into the stream. If this is an attempt to discourage young people from watching the show, congratulations, you have suceeded. -JimXugle

I meant digital transmission like HDMI, SPDIF, Fiber Optic, firewire, and ethernet. Wireless N is pretty far away and I prefer a hardline if possible.

September 15, 2006 6:23 PM

One thing I would like to say about converting the audio from one bitrate to a higher one is that no matter how high of a bitrate you re-encode the file into, it won't help if you are just re-encoding the same file, because the better audio is generally already lost.

Forget mp3. use a current generation compression codec such as acc, wma, or ogg. With good headphones or speakers you sometimes need to up the bitrate to 256+. I can usually tell if my music is lower than that. If you have the space, support, and battery life use a lossless codec.

September 17, 2006 7:44 AM

Stop complaining about cables ... by the best you can and prioritise your money on the things that matter - if you have to give up a new mobile phone for a 1% improvement in your AV experience then stand back and think about what you really value. High end products are made for two groups of people : those who can afford them and need them, and those who can't afford them but think they need them (suckers). My 2 cents.

Good show as always, Pre-recorded piece was good and i would like to see more. Show is as always to short(yeah i know it is a bandwidth thing). Had not previously noted the difference that cables and recording bit rates could make to sound with my old speaker system. Recently upgraded my sound system and have just tried some lossless recordings(been so long since i just played a CD) and astounded at the difference, so thanks. Quality in big screen TV's is more important than older or small CRT's. as CRT's have across the board general good quality. But start blowing them upto 42" and small problems gets big or annoying. I recently changed my plasma and opted for a drop in potential resolution to get the colours and smoothness that i wanted st my budget. So it's always good to know when your playing with normal budgets what the screen your looking at has as its week points so you can prioritise. A Quick question will the Xbox360's HD-dvd drive(due out in november/december) be the first UK high def player on the UK market? thanks all.

Hello all. Quick note on cables, digital connections like hdmi / dvi don't need uber high quality cables. The signal is digital, so the 1's and 0's will either get there or they wont. A 'clean' 1 is just the same as a dirty '1'. Having said that, if you get a really cheap cable with bad plugs on the end you might get issues cause of bad connections, but not loss on the cable. Analog connections like component connections are affected more by noise on crappy cables. A nice cable with good clean connections will sound better than rusty one with loose connections. But the difference between a good piece of 4-gauge vs a many hundreds of dollars cable will be neglegable.

As for high quality audio and video cable, i dont know if any of you guys watch patricks buddy from the screen savers, kevin rose who released a few episodes of his show called "systm". They made a great episode 3 on how to build your own A/V cables from scratch which is how its done professionally when used in long distances...pretty good stuff
