I got me some hibachi. Let's go. I want to see Robert update us on Cedia and since we are addressing the Tivo S3 directly, he needs to continue the review he never finished and explain when and if it will get updated. Good luck and hopefully good show.

As far as the notebook coolers go, I would suggest instead to get a extended battery. I have for instance, a 12 cell extended battery for my HP notebook that tilts it up at a angle (thus good air flow!) and I have more battery time for my notebook to boot! A win win situation in my opinion!

Hey Pat and Robert: After downloading Itunes 7.0, I had a problem with programs I download from coast 2 coast. If I use Coast 2 Coasts app to download the program, I then transfer it over to the IPOD, when I click on it to listen to it, it reboots the ipod...If I use an earlier version of Itunes(anything 6.0) it works great. so now on my main Pc, I can't use Itunes because of this, and you can't back rev. So I am sheet out luck I guess.Did anyone test this update before the release.....

Great show! As far as notebook coolers go, I would opt instead for buying an extended battery. For instance, I have a extended 12 cell battery on my HP notebook that tilts it up at a slight angle (thus better air flow!) and I also get better battery life than I did with my original 6 cell battery. A win win situation!

I've had trouble with a couple flash drives. The first would show up in Windows as some sort of memory controller device and XP would ask for a driver. The second would simply refuse to mount on Win/Linux/OSX. I was going to RMA it but I got lazy. Later, I tried cleaning it just to see if it would help, and sure enough good as new. I found a toothbrush & some rubbing alcohol across the USB pins on the connector works great. And if it's dead anyway, can't hurt.

Well, since I can't see this thing to hear about the performance problems in iTunes 7 due to, well, performance problems, I'm having to switch to the DivX podcast now. Any recommendations for a useful podcast tool, that will support them, on Macintosh OS X (PowerPC)

Posted by: Geoffrey Knobl
September 20, 2006 4:36 PM

Yep, this is the first video podcast that I've had from anyone that is jerky and goes sloooowwwwllly on video playback. For some reasons this isn't working on the new version but on the old it always did just fine with your h.264.

Hmmm... any one else listen to the audio under the end graphic. Robert has a browser... Thunderbird. Patrick slags it.. it's useless in an actual car.

September 20, 2006 5:42 PM

Actually, DVDs are in 16:9 aspect ratio, not 4:3. Check out this guide from the Digital Bits for the lowdown. http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/anamorphic/index.html

September 20, 2006 6:28 PM

I subscribe to the h.264 version of dl.tv and watch it in iTunes on an iMac. Since I upgraded to iTunes 7, it it's been showing some really REALLY awful interlacing artifacts (it's especially visible when Robert starts waving his hands). Why would you use interlaced video for something that's meant to be watched on a computer screen anyway?

Posted by: Frank C
September 20, 2006 11:36 PM

Yeah, I also heard the audio at the end. Not entirely sure what to make of it. I'd almost say that it was meant to be a spoof of the whole CNN microphone in the bathroom ordeal, but that seems unlikely. Strange all around.

Since it was shot 2.35:1 instead of 1.85:1, "Twister" was not a good choice to show what Patrick described as a 16x9 image squeezed onto a 4x3 screen. And when Patrick asked Robert if most movies were shot 16x9, the answer should have been "Yes!" CinemaScope?! Oh, Robert... The viewer asked whether iTunes movies are 16x9. iTunes seems to use 640 pixels horizontally, then whatever's needed vertically (640x480 for 4:3, 640x360 for 1.85:1, 640x272 for 2.35:1). They wouldn't encode the black bars on a movie like "Twister," but there would be BIG black bars added when it was viewed on a 4x3 iPod screen. Is it possible to flag an h264 QuickTime as anamorphic, and let the player resize it as necessary? iTunes could do that to make the movies closer to DVD quality. Or perhaps they don't because they're only interested in smaller file sizes.

hd tv, hd disk, ipod shilling, battery reports. I think were all caught up on these topics. What else you got? I'm just not feelin it anymore. You better bust out the A game, and soon.

Here's why you spend $800 on a series 3 tivo 1. you have lifetime subscription and your seris 1 is as old as tivo 2. tivo always workes 3.If you have built a mediacenter pc,that easily cost $800, and it does'nt always work. Especially wirh four tuners etc. 4 you want OWN your equipment and can blow it up without getting sued 5 It's pretty 6 it works, always 7. tivo is easy to use 8. You don't want to trouble shoot, look for drivers etc. 9. you dont like knowledebases that don't have the knowlede you need 10 TIVO WORKS

I am not sure that you guy are quite correct when referring to how dvds are encoded. On anamophic dvds the visible picture uses the entire 480 lines of resolution, the horizontal data is squashed to fit into 640 lines. The dvd player stretches out the data and adds the black bars on the top and bottom. The size of these bars depends on the type of TV you are using to view the movie. That is why you have to set up your dvd player specifying the shape of your tv. Non-anamorphic dvds do encode the black bars and have poorer quality video. I do not know if iTunes movies are encoded anamophically. Does anyone know? Thanks

iTunes instally causes a reboot when the program is executed. reverted to version 6 and problems were solved. waiting for a 7.0.1 fix.

Some widescreen DVDs contain a 4:3 image with black bars, and some don't. It's inconsistent. I notice this a lot because my widescreen TV will only display progressive content in 16:9. If I'm watching 3:4 content that's interlaced, I can press a button to zoom in or put gray bars on the sides of the picture.

When a widescreen film is encoded as a 3:4 image with black bars at the top and bottom -- and I play the DVD with a progressive capable player -- I'm stuck with a distorted image. I'd love it if Microsoft updated the Xbox 360 with an option to toggle the way DVDs are shown on-screen to solve this problem.
