The Deets for Episode 102
Robert, Roger, Jim and our party at DigitalLife...
• Robert's in NYC setting up for the DigitalLife Event... Roger Chang and Jim Louderback are guest hosting.
• We're throwing a party in NYC Saturday October 14th... Do us a favor and register on our Upcoming.org
page so we can get a head count on who's going, please! (And thank you!)
• Yes, adult bevvies will be available (free!), and, yes, we will be checking IDs.
• The party is free, and you can get free tickets for the DigitalLife Event if you email us at dl.tv@ziffdavis.com with "Free DigitalLife Tickets" in the subject.
Stuff
• What cables can carry 1080p video? Robert's got an answer for Rob.
• Jim demos the best tools for making tight coax connections (Better signal = better video from your cable or satllite box!)
• Jim owns a ridiculous number of TiVo boxes.
• More WiFi Booster Goodness (Lukas asks what if your WAP doesn't have an external antenna? Shane wonders if it'll work at both ends? And what's up w/ that glue stick, Patrick?)
• Your first two reccos on ways to send huge files! (And a comment from at least one viewer, Matt, that isn't too thrilled with the most popular hosting site the DL.TV crew suggestion...)
• Anthony's looking for a cheap way to get Photoshop like tools (Photoshop CS retails for $699.) without stealing 'em off the net. We say try Photoshop Elements, The GIMP and Paint.net. BTW, if you havent seen Bert Monroy's work, check it out! (He's got a new instructional series at Revision3, PixelPerfect, that's pretty cool, too.)
• Chad wants us to poll the DL.TV audience on every episode. Let's give it a shot. How about an external hard disk enclosure that sleeps the drive when its inactive? All the OS X users in the studio said "Get a Mac." Got a recco for Chad? Email us at dl.tv@ziffdavis.com
NEWS
• North Korea Tests Nuclear Weapon. Scientists debate if it was a real nuke, misfire, or a giant pile of TNT
• And a quick shout out to all the sailors that were in town for Fleet Week!
You'll Find More DL.TV on MEVIO. Check out our extensive video network.

This comment refers to Patricks answer for the slow download speeds. Knowing that the network configurations between DLTVs hosting servers and the ISP's are the reason for the slow download speeds, the quickest "temporary" fix is to used a proxy server. It works with both HTTP and Socks proxies.I've had up to 100kb increase in download speed(depending on proxy sever host and location of proxy).
Socks: http://www.samair.ru/proxy/socks.htm
HTTP: http://www.samair.ru/proxy/
Hope this helps.

Great show. It didn't get said, but what I do is I make a multiple archive rar with winrar (Freeware, google for it) which more or less means that my 700mb file has been cropped into 7 100mb files, and then I rapidshare those, or more effectively, MegaUpload (Rapidshare makes you wait after ever download), them all, and then provide the links to my friends. That is to say, I used to do that before I went out and got my own webspace. But for a free alternative, make sure to check out multiple archive rar's. Quick, painless, done.

Sheesh, Norton, my god..replacing one flamer with another? Is that like a quota thing you have to do?
Who next?
The cabana boy from la Cage aux Folles?
I, Rob Enderle, laugh in your face.

Um, quad core cable? Try quad shielded Jim. And his technique with that stripper was terrible. Stipped off way too much, and if you use the stripper to pull off the ends of the cable it wears out the blades. One last thing, do yourself a favor and go on ebay and spend the extra $10 for a professional quality compression tool. That was possibly the worst researched segment I've ever seen on this show.

Hey this is my first post, love DL.TV but I've got to say Roger Chang deserves a regular spot on DL.TV or his own podcast. I know he's technically on What's New Now but he's sporadically on, he needs to be a regular/host on some show. Patrick I never watched the screen savers but man you an Roger had great on air chemistry, no wonder everyone misses it so much. Great show and great job keeping the monkeys on a leash Pat, you got information across and let in some zaniness which is always a tough thing to balance. My fave show yet.

October 12, 2006 4:22 PM
Our company had 1and1 for our webhosting for a long time, and we have had connectivity issues forever. When we argued with them repeatedly saying it couldn't have been us, they ended up telling us that the problem was ours...but then mysteriously there was a router failure that they notified us of and service was better...for a short while.

The term you are looking for when you are talking about the quality is called sweep test. RG6 cable is sweep tested before it is issued to tell you how much information can be pushed thru that cable at any given moment. RG6 3000MHz is standard for Dish Network. The tool he was using to strip the cable (strippers) can be ajusted to strip the cable without having to peel away the rubber shell. Peel back the Braiding only not the tin foil stuff that surounds the white part of the cable. Otherwise you will use signal. P.S. Data travels thru the white part of the coax cable and not the copper center, People always beleives that its the copper that hold the signal. There are many better tools than what you saw on this episode. Dont use crimpers they are like pliers and they crimp the cable, cutting off the data stream. Its like standing on a garden hose not much water comes out till you take your foot off right! Well Just thought you would like to know this tid bit of info. Have any other questions about dish network or cableing, feel free to ask me or any other SBCA Certified Installer...

You guys sounded a little loopy today. As for the cable segment, Get a professional cable installer on one day to let loose some of their secrets. How the heck do they make the back of panels look SO nice? How do I run a wire through existing walls? Then there is the wire the ends of the cable stuff they also do.

I Hope I'm not, but probably am worse than Jim cause I would love a 4th due to my three being FULL even though I transfer at least 50% to DVD with my set-top DVD recorder. Mostly old ZD/TechTV bits and Nova-type science/political shows(some Kung Faux and tournament paintball too). Even though TV isn't what it used to be and I'm only 24! Except for TWiT/DL .tv 's of course.

Ok first off. The signal infact travels on the outside of the copper center conducter, and NOT the white dialectric. I belive you meant to say this and simply mistyped. The center conductor is NOT pure copper because of this "skin effect" The white portion is simply to allow for 75 ohms of impedence on the line in order to prevent ingress or egress on the line. I agree with everything else that has been said however. Thsoe crimpers where not of a good quality and may simply crush the line ruining the aforementioned impedence.
As far as running cable into a pre existing wall, what we use at work are two different tools. One is a low tech set of "glow rods". Glow Rods are approximately 5 feet long and have male and female parts on either end allowing you to daisy chain them if neccesary. ----
What we do is run a line from the "house box" outside up into the attic and run the line thru the attic over the wall joist of the wall that you want to run the new line into. At this point you use a 1/4 - 1/2 inch paddle bit to drill a small hole into the wall joist from within the attic. At this point, secure the RG6 or 11 if neccessary depending on length of run, to the end of the glow rods. And slide the glow rods down into the Hole. At this point if we have a partner with us we use teh glow rods in the wall to make enough noise for the cable guy inside to locate the approximate location of the rods within the wall. And he will cut out a small mudbox shaped hole into the wall. The cable tech inside then reaches into the hoel he just made and pulls the rods thru along with the attatched lines. And voila.. you attatch a fitting, F-81 (barrel) face plate and youre good to go.
However, if you are by yourself I would recommend that before you head into the attic you should cut off a small segment approxmiately 1 foot of coax cable. Remove the dialectric and foil and all using a cable stripper exposing an absurdly long piece of center conducter, at this point known as a stinger. You then link on the wall where yo would like the outlet and pierce the cieling directly above the location where the outlet should be. At this point when you are in the attic you should have a reference point as to where to drill your hole into the joist.
Oh, one last thing PLEASE avoid studs and breaker boards. I reccomend using a stud finder to find a nice safe spot to run your line between two studs. Then do a quick sweep to make sure there isnt any horizontal boards running inside the wall.
