What's new in Episode 106
Today on DL.TV, Patrick was driving back from Colorado, so Jim Louderback joined Robert Heron on DL.TV. And as the "guest host", Jim got tagged with writing the shownotes, so here they are!
NEWS
• Firefox Launches and it's party time! PC Magazine covered the launch of version 2.0, and also the more than 400 parties that are happening worldwide to celebrate the event. This episode of DL.TV, in fact, was one of those parties.
• Want to download Firefox 2.0? It was a bit congested earlier in the day, but you can find 2.0 setup here:
• New Bittorrent support added to nine routers and NAS boxes. This is a key development,as you can serve and receive torrents without leaving your PC on.
• In a stroke of twisted genius, a malware writer adds antivirus software to its Trojan, ensuring that any compromised machine its loaded on will be dedicated solely to its nefarious purposes. But what happens when two or more Trojans adopt the same technology?
Stuff
• Roger Chang came on and showed how you can add media center streaming capabilities to an older Xbox, breathing new life into the aging platform. The capabilities are very cool, and Roger showed an easy way, step by step, to make it happen. You can find out more at www.xbox-hq.com
• It's also a great time to upgrade your system. ExtremeTech editor Loyd Case just wrote a great fall upgrade guide, and we brought him on in our own version of "Ask Martha" You can read all about Loyd's picks here.
• Finally, we had time for just one question. Robert, Jim and associate producer Scott Asnault shared their favorite RSS readers.
• I prefer Feed Demon, particularly because it lets you store feeds and read them offline :
• Robert shows off Sage, a Firefox plugin that works with 2.0;
• And Scott is particular to the new Google Reader which is drop dead easy to use
• Whatever you use, remember that most sites let you autodiscover feeds. In Sage, you use the magnifying glass when you're on that site in Firefox. And make sure that your reader lets you export your feed subscriptions as an OPML file. Then you can import that list in another reader, without tracking down all the feeds and re-entering them manually.
Thanks to Robert, Roger, Scott, Patrick and Annaliza for letting me sit in for Patrick. It was fun! See you at What's New Now!

Please, no more Jim. He does his best and we appreciate that, but he has that sort of alpha type personality which is always a low level annoyance. Thank you.

Just because you have an inferiority complex doesn't mean he shouldn't be allowed to host a show.

@ Jem
Very true, and it comes out in the What's New Now podcastas well.
This is one reason I find TWiT easier to listen to, Leo is very a good/easy-going host and is very effective at diffusing situations when other Type-A's like Dvorak is getting high up on his horse, interrupting or po-hooing someone's idea or comment.
@ Brisco
I don't know if the problem is psychological with the viewer or not, but not having an endearing host that is butting heads with his co-hosts doesn't make for easy watching, which I think most podcasts attempt to be... unless your Borat, then abrasion is the entire purpose.

So what you are saying is that in order for you to enjoying watching a show the hosts have to be in complete agreement all the time. There is a difference between having a different opinion and "butting heads." Disagreements, as long as they remain good natured, are an entertaining and efficient way of conveying more than one point of view in a talk show format.
I will agree the show is different when Jim is hosting instead of Pat, but that doesn't make it bad. After all variety is the spice of life.

My soft-modded XBox is without a doubt, the best piece of hardware I have bought/put together in a long time. I went the XBMC route and I wouldn't want to live without it.
Robert and Jim talked about upgrading the HD which does require a modchip so soft-modding will not work. If you do put in a modchip, you can also upgrade to a quieter DVD player as well.
I backed up all of my DVD's and CD's onto a 400GB sata drive on the PC, categorized the music/movies/TV/photos into secure SMB shares, and pull it from the XBox over cat5e. It's easy, makes for a fun project, and is really useful.
All that said, it doesn't support HD. When I get a CRT projector I think I'll give MythTV a go.

The internet is a better place with you contributing to it.
@ brisco
I should have clarified, but yes what you said is exactly right. Good-natured disagreements are fine.
Maybe I have my ear tuned to it too critically, but in every episode of What's New Now when both Patrick and Jim are on, it sounds like a "Jim needs to one-up Patrick on every point, or get the last word in".
My guess is that arguing this point is like trying to argue which ice cream flavor is the best.

My preferred RSS reader is Bloglines. I can check my feeds from any computer with only a web browser, and the knowledge of what I've read and haven't read resides online. Now that Google has improved their reader's interface, I'm sure it's fine too, but I like Bloglines' package-tracking feature.

I just watched 106 and Robert and Jim really worked very well together! I miss Patrick of course but jeez he better watch his back. It was an exciting show and there was good on screen chemistry.
Also while I am here, it seems like you guys are doing a lot more video segments now. On the one hand this gives the show a more corporate and professional feel, but on the other hand it makes for a better show. Keep it up.

--------Robert and Jim talked about upgrading the HD which does require a modchip so soft-modding will not work. If you do put in a modchip, you can also upgrade to a quieter DVD player as well.-------
Not true, I have a chip with a 160 gig drive.
I installed a 120 in a friends xbox after SOFTMODING him. You do not need a chiped xbox to have a larged drive. You DO need a friend with a chiped xbox to complete the process though.
--Nitty Gritty--
Backup YOUR eprom.
You softmod your friend. You unlock his hard drive. You backup his eprom and the backup you made while softmoding to a computer. You then take the hard drive out of your chiped xbox, put in the new larger drive, and use AID 3 to "Prepair" the drive. Then Softmod the drive.
You then ftp his eprom to the new large drive. You use AID 3 to lock the new drive (Using HIS eprom)
Now copy over any of his saves and such.
Put the large drive back in your friends machine.
Done.
Softmoded xboxes REQUIRE the hard drive to be locked.
Chiped xboxes do NOT require the hard drive to be locked. (PS, my xbox now also uses his eprom because to the way the eprom has to be flashed onto your xbox, before being able to lock a drive with it)
Also, softmoding can also be done without a action replay, if you chipped friend will copy the softmods onto a memory card for you.

if i want to do the streaming like Roger showed in the show, does the PC side(where the files are stored) have to be WinXP Media Center edition? or any regular with sharing enable is fine? (any special sharing settings required?)

Action Replay is the best way to softmod.
And I dont appreciate this legal bull$h1T. XBMC is open source, Microsoft wants to make the XDK open then they can do that. until then, I will go to usenet and dl my favorite new XBMC release.
I use XBMC to stream tv shows and DL.TV, not to mention all the great other features.
You need to stop putting the legal stuff in front of our heads, be more like The Broken where you don't care. This is the internet, if they dont like it, dont watch it.

Poor audio on the Windows file. The last two shows have had poor, distorted audio on the WMV download that wasn't present on, flash, the mp3 or h.264 versions. Last week it was mostly on Patricks mic - this wee it's overall. Format isn't a real big issue but I get the WMV version so I can use my MM keyboard functions that only work with WMP. Thought you might want to know. goos show too, btw. Louderback is a little loud and interrupts but he's the boss so what can ya' do...Keep 'em coming guys!

Does not have to be a Media Center PC.
Regular ol Windows with file sharing enabled.
Also, be sure to in stall XBMC (Xbox Media Center)
You wont be streaming anything with just the dashboard. XBMC is a necessity.
Once your softmoded....Backups, Emulators, DVDs, Music, Streaming Media...........It's a whole new machine.

thanks everyone for the comments. Patrick absolutely does not have to watch his back, because he's way better than me (first), and I'm waaay too busy with all my other jobs to do this more than once in a while (that would be second).
But I had a lot of fun!
On the XBox, thanks for the update. I know I've seen 720p games via my xbox (an MLB game from EA), so it is at least somewhat capable.. But I guess I'll need a mod chip for HD. Or an xbox 360, which might be less of a hassle. And more legal?

OK, for the record, I did NOT say the F-word. I've been hyper sensitive to any swearing since getting royally reamed for saying "Sucks" on Fresh Gear 7 years ago.
I did say "frigging" or maybe "freaking" -- which is close, but not over the line. I guess when you compress the audio, you lose some of the rrrrr...
freaking poor audio compression codecs!!!!!

First Great JOB! but Watching ep.90 and wondering what happened to the "Frugal" Patrick and "Pressure Pushing" (On Companies with lousy Specs and High prices) Robert (although he still is for HDTV's) BUT on you recent Laptop Roundup I quess I was hoping for someone (other than myself) to bicker about the lousy specs on dells' RAM/HDD/DVDR DL/other components, because I was able to "Customize" on thier respective websites and create what would be 3500 for about 1300 without all thier Bloat-ard/software! But you still did kinda touch on all the subjects just didn't hammer the companies as musch as used to in "TV days" (but maybe they're paying ya which I kinda understand I guess ...uhhh where'd my soul go?) anyway GreatJob!

@DL.TV crew, I normaly like your show so I'm sorry to report this but I'm highly disapointed by Roger Changs presentation (or should I say miss-reprensentation) of a modded Xbox in this Episode 106. He showed it in very poor light so to speak.
First of all; why did he not set it up to boot directly to XBMC (XboxMediaCenter), why did he play the medi-files from the file-manager and not from the "My Videos" interface (and why didn't he show of the "My Music" and "My Pictures" views as well), that just gives the wrong impression, the real interface is so smooth and great to use, and why the heck did he use an old third-party skin (a clone of Wndows XP MCE 2005) when the original Project Mayhem 3 skin is much nicer.
http://www.chokemaniac.net/download.php?cat=pm3
Secondly; if possible choose a hardware modchip before a software mod (softmod), only use a softmod if you for some reason don't want to spend the $20 to £60 bucks on a modchip. Once you tested XBMC you probebebly won't mind spending some money for a modchip and DVD-remote control for your old Xbox.
Finally; the orignal Xbox and XBMC does too output HD (720p and 1080i), you just need to buy a other video-cable, a component cable-adapter, either from Microsoft or a third-party one. True the Xbox processor is not fast enough to decode native 720p or 1080i/1080p video but it can upconvert all video that has a lower resolution than 960x540 (a.k.a. HRHD or Half Resolution High Definition) to 720p and 1080i. So a normal NTSC or PAL DVD-Video movie can be upconverted to 720p and 1080i without problems on the Xbox in XBMC.
I like to request a new review and new reevaluation of a modded Xbox with it booting directly to XBMC with it's original skin and the latest version, XBMC 2.0.0
PS! www.xbox-scene.com is much better than www.xbox-hq.com

Hi people!
Christmas Day falls on December 25. It is preceded by Christmas Eve on December 24, and in some countries is followed by Boxing Day on December 26. Some Eastern Orthodox Churches celebrate Christmas on January 7, which corresponds to December 25 on the Julian calendar. December 25 as a birthdate for Jesus is merely traditional, and is not thought to be his actual date of birth.Good luck!

Getting an MSCE is nontrivial -- but let's not beat around the bush it's relatively easy. And ridiculously easy compared to the level of technical expertise it is supposed to represent.
