What's new in Episode 117
STUFF
• Want a Silent PC? ExtremeTech's Jason Cross joins us to talk about his latest build.
• $300 gaming NIC? Is it a must have or a waste of cash? We've got the word for Intentsly and Merrell
• Josiah, Jason, Crhis, Bryan, Donald and co. ask "What happened to the MPeg4 feed?" (We droped it, please try the H.264 video instead!)
• Doppler: Mike's recco for subscribing to our video. It's free, and it works.
• Democracy, a very cool all in one tool for subscribing, downloading and watching video, can't read our RSS feeds. We're working to fix that ASAP.
• Robert says "Hey, finals are coming up for me in college. Do you guys have any advice for me?" Yup. Don't buy a Wii and start playing Zelda until --after-- finals are over!
• 20 gauge shotgun + malfunctioning DVD player = fun. Thanks for the pix Chase!
• And more!

I'm getting an error connecting. I assume if the link is up, it should connect?
Windows Media Player cannot connect to the server. The server name might not be correct, the server might not be available, or your proxy settings might not be correct.

I just purchased a 20" iMac, how do I view the show live in Safari or FireFox? I have Quicktime Pro & VLC. VLC will only play the audio stream.
Thanks, Toddman

Toddman, try downloading the WMV commponent for OS X. I am not sure if it will help because I never watch the live show but none the less a very good add on for Quicktime and I know I can watch the live show just don't know if it is WMV but looking at the posts above it must be.

Hey guys... The WMV versions will be available, "eventually." Can't you tell, Patrick and the DL.TV gang doesn't like WMV and they'll favor all but MPEG.4 over it. Heck, Patrick could barely muster the strength to mention WMV when he sited stats opposite formats... it was subtle, but his hesitation was surely there.
They'll ignore that a) WMV9 - with an open standard version built on it, VC-1 [adopted by the DVD Forum, by the way...] is very popular and b) that most people don't watch "PodCasts" on an iPod at all - in fact, fewer than 20% of all PodCasts are ever moved to a mobile device of any kind and finally c) most PodCasts are viewed on PC's - which all have WMP and capable of playing, you guessed it, WMV!
But forget any hint of common sense. This is their world and most of us are just not cool enough to "get it."
So, expect to see H.264 favored over anything else and head on over to Apple.com and your mandatory dose of iTunes as you try to get a viewer.
No Thanks! I'll wait until they yank their heads out of their fourth points of contact. BTW, DL.TV, why don't you encode the WMV's a bit on up there and a lot closer to what the format supports at its upper end?

Dude your just like me. I'm typing on my new MacbookPro that's not even a week old. Download WMP 9 for mac. It's old but it actually works. Just tell it to open the stream and it works flawlessly. I don't get why VLC won't play it either.

Lloyd,
Mac and Linux users can have issues playing back WMV content - especially when new versions are released. H.264 can be played on most platforms (although as Patrick said last week, it's fairly CPU intensive) and gives great compression. I'd agree with you that it's a shame XP doesn't come with a built in decoder, however I'd imagine you could play back H.264 in WMP by installing FFDShow http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow

Actually if its H.264 in a .mov container the best bet would be quicktime alternative.

I have a larger fan than that on my computer. I use a 10 inch IBM mainframe fan on the side of my computer. I can't hear anything that isn't within 3 feet of me but it keeps my PC 13 degrees cooler than when it is off.

Will H.264 play on the IPod? How do you subscribe the IPod feed without using ITunes? I use Juice for my RSS feeds.

Please violently destroy a windows machine for me.
I spent better part of the last three days trying to recover from a client's virus infection.
I wiped his hard drive, reinstalled Windows XP SP2 + 50 or so Windows Update patches, installed MS Office Pro + patches, two hours online chat with Palm Treo tech support...The last Excel patch from Microsoft Update would not install...I tried to manually install the patch... now SVCHOST goes to 99% CPU usage and stays there...Google Newsgroup search shows many other people have the same problem dating back to October..no plausible solutions.
My Thursday will be spent reinstalling WinXPProSP2 (at least an hour), + patches (another hour), Windows Office Pro2003 (30 minutes), importing a huge .PST (450 megabytr Delete item folder) file into Outlook (30 minutes), installing Outlook patches ( another hour at least assuming the Excel patch doesnt fail again), then Oki 4100 driver, network Afico Ricoh printer, copy over My Documents, IE favorites, recreate 4 network drive maps, reinstall insurance agency management software, reinstal real estate management software, reintall flaky Palm Treo software and establish "conduits" to Outlook ( "try removing the battery, try plugging it into another USB port, try a HotSync, try removing the battery and a different USB port, uninstall the Palm software and reinstall, try switching the conduits from Outlook to Palm Desktop...oops...post the error log to the chat...Uninstall and reinstall palm software and point it to palm desktop, if that works reinstall paperless office scanning document management software and then check for any more Microsoft Update patches...oh crap the last MU update hosed the system .....SVCHOST is consuming 99% of system...resources...oh we need antispam, antivirus and antispyware software...
$400 for your services? "I can buy a new computer for $299...see...right here on this Dell ad."
Kilt, sledge hammer, wind up, deep from the soul drive the hammer into the guts of the instrument of the devil.

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions for QT/MOV viewers, etc. However, I don't view Pod, or other video casts that way.
I move all video files into a share on our home network where a custom MCE 2005 PC serves as a front end host to many files and another MCE 2005 system [the pair aggregate and record all of our TV, Music and Videos]. From the host, we consume all content via MCE extenders - a combination of Xbox 360 and Linksys Extenders.
So for example, DL.TV episodes are usually viewed as we read tech news in our living room and it is played on a 50" Samsung - the quality is not HD, but good enough and nearly as good as SD TV. The audio is fine. I could of course, convert H.264 files, or others and view them the same way, but that would defeat the appliance like environment we have created. A variety of programs harvest and store all content we subscribe to - some custom, some acquired via downloads.
Again, thank you. L.
