Episode 135:
Vista is here! Should you? Will you have any choice? We go off.

What's new in Episode 135
STUFF
• Microsoft Vista, the replacement for Windows XP, is here.
• We've got a grab bag o' info to help you decide if you should upgrade or wait... or go with OS X.
• PCMag gives Vista a 3.5 out of 5
• Most folks should buy it pre-installed on your next PC. You probably don't have a choice if you're buying from a big system maker.
• It does have some shiny new features... Patrick's fave is the intergrated search. Robert loves the eye candy.
• Vista Home Basic sucks... don't pay to upgrade to it.
• OEM Vista can only work with one motherboard? Let's slash a few Vista OEM edition lies. (And, yup, Robert's right: retail copy of Vista come w/ both 32 bit and 64 bit versions.)
• Vista's install is awesome. Pretty much painless. (Unless you've got the rare bits of hardware w/ no driver support... Or the not so rare: Creative XFi 5.1 support and Intel 5.1 audio drivers come to mind... darn those redesigned audio bits in Vista!)
• Run the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor before you buy a copy of Vista!
• And, darn it, make sure you back up everything you need on your system whether your do a clean install or 'upgrade in place.'
• ExtremeTech's chief Loyd case took some time to talk to us about hardware issues in Vista... DX 10 gaming and choosing between 32 and 64 bit editions.
• Tons of good info if you're running Vista now, or just thinking about it over at PCMag.com

I wonder where patrick's weasel fetish came from? He's had a fondness of weasel since TSS days as far as I know.

Great walkthrough though!

Why is the show getting shorter and shorter? It used to be around around 50 minutes. Thanks for the show though.

January 30, 2007 3:54 PM

Well it wasnt so much the low quality of the video as it was the audio and video going out of sync and the video jumping but i will say some of that or all of it could be on my Great Charter ISP

As for vista i wont be getting it anytime soon ill wait till i get a new pc or give it 2-3 years heh

I download and watch DLTV every week and love the show, H.264 great looking format over all the others, Keep up the good work guys. HELP decided to try out Comodo firewall since you guys say it was the best out there and I love that it tells me more about what program is trying to get out than Zone Alarm does which I have been using for years. Problem is Comodo will not stop popping up notification and yes I do keep putting a check in the box for it to remember it and it just keeps popping up for everything, very annoying as you can imagine. So I decide to take Comodo off and put Zone Alarm back on, Not it wont let me it keeps saying ZoneAlarm-1001-English has encountered a problem and needs to close, and I get the same thing with the newest version that I just downloaded. Any ideas on either problem.

@Dave

I don't know what the specs of their system is, but Vista runs great on my aging rig (Athlon XP 2500+ @2.07Ghz, 768MB DDR-333, and a 6600GT).

I think this was a pre-recorded show. I think it was at the end, or near the end, when Robert said something in the line of "By the time people see this..." I think this might explain the fuzzy picture.

I can't wait for the download link to the posted. I want to see the show again.

And I agree with Dave. The PC used in the show was running Vista very fast.

I can’t re-sell or move my OEM vista to another computer? I can’t even upgrade it without moving into a gray area? I say we put microsoft into a head lock and hold it under water until the feet stop kicking. Imagine that, we wake up tomorrow and Microsoft is just gone. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’d feel a whole lot better, sort of like after taking a healthy ‘bowel movement’. The air would be cleaner, and Robert would eventually get over it.

I remember Robert mentioning a Quad-Core PC in the last show. He talked about wanting to run that Vista "emulation" site. I wonder if that was the system of choice. I'm also waiting for the download as well.

Great Vista coverage!
There are definitely some video issues though. I did an AB test with the last show to make sure my monitor wasn't playing tricks on me.
These colors are way oversaturated, and its all a little blurry.

Why is the .wmv file soooooo bad? Did you guys use Vista to transcode with maybe? LOL

January 31, 2007 7:29 AM

Great show as always. How about mentioning the Stardock products (and others) as an alternative to the Vista Aero Glass if people just want to see a pretty operating system? Also stress that no amount of built in "security" is a substitute for careful browsing and email use. I'm sure the hackers are feverishly working to break Vista and you will be reporting on it soon. Many thanks for the best true tech show on right now.

I was watching DOA (dead or alive) and i noticed that one of the actress was a host on the screen saver (techtv), she's hot. I think her name was Sarah she played Helena. is she the one?

back to the topic is it worth it to upgrade to Vista especially if you are in delevopment department (IT). let us put it this way in company uses like example just for excel or word purposes. what do you think guys?

Can you partition your hard drive and have Windows XP and Vista on your computer at the same time?

One huge negative thing about Vista, besides its not XP, is that the classic login screen, as well as the secure CTRL+ALT+DEL login screen used in domains, is gone. Thats going to be a very very bad thing for us IT administrators!! Oh the horror. This was posted on a blog, by "Spooky"

"I don't see the a security threat difference between the classic log-on and the new Vista log-on myself. I've been working in the IT security area for 20 years, and deploy almost 4000 secure systems a year to support various coporation and government contracts, and for the professional IT environment in coporations and companies never have I had an incident or have I heard of an incident where the user name showing actually aided the penetration or compromise of a system when the password wasn't known, and i've handled many network and related security incidents. The reason is simple, anyone whose serious about breaking into a system has more then likely already done their home work and knows the user name and password, and if they are serious then the lack of a user name being known is not going to stop them if they can get to the system. Most times all it takes is an email, anyone whos ever examined email headers or addresses for a vast majority of company systems will begin to realize that a lot of times a persons user name appears in the headers or address because a lot of companies will use the user name as the email address also, e.g..john.smith@somewhere.com, and from this it would be a first guess that the user name is john.smith.

For the average home user the name showing in the Vista log-on and the lack of the more traditional ctrl-alt-del log on procedure doesn't do anything to prevent the threats to, and compromise of, a home users system because 99.999999999% of threats faced by the home user occur after they log on if there is any log-on procedure used. Except for whats shown in hollywood movies, i've never heard of anyones home system being compromised because their user name was showing in the log-on.

This is not to say that the bad guys should get any information what so ever, but the classic log-on doesn't do anything to prevent the user name from being compromised, which is why strong passwords should always be used, and the user name showing in the Vista log-on doesn't do anything to weaken the log-on security. The key to good physical compusec is not wrapped around a user name, the key (s) simply put (in context with the classic vs. Vista login) is strong encryption and passwords, strong physical security, immediate detection and response for breeches, and 24 hour a day protection from IT related threats, and of course user education. Also add to this the fact that the majority of systems presently deployed in the coporate world give users some if not all administrative rights or control over their own work stations. This all points to a fact that something needs to be done at the workstation end because the workstation is actually the first line of defense and not necessary the LAN/networked end all the time, the user name not showing at the log-in doesn't add any layer of defense at all, the layer of defense thats needed is something that needs to be a native part of the OS and this is what Vista provides. (Lately i've been deploying a lot of systems using SmartCard/PIN number systems because the contracts specified them, now talk about your nightmare for security.)

Concerning companies moving away from Windows to open source systems, my customers on open source systems are screaming for Vista. They recognize the benefits of what Vista provides natively vs. the open source systems that has to be added or time needs to be spent configuing on a per-workstation basis; this being an added layer of defence against the majority of their IT headaches which begin at that lowly little workstation, and it can be managed on an enterprise level. They recognize that someone not liking things like the visual representations in Vista, or having to wait for a few OEM drivers for a bit because they don't like the in-box drivers, does not out weigh the advantages of Vista, because their information is more important to them then someones likes or dislikes. However, even as all this hub bub concerning Vista un-folds, people moving to Vista, their decisions to do so, will not be based on if their name shows at the log-in screen of not because its just not that important and doesn't do anything to compromise security at all."

Mac people annoy me, they remind me of missionary's, always trying to convert people.

Now.. let me point out I have nothing against a Mac or the users themselves however. I am not going to buy a Mac and be stuck playing the latest and greatest Diablo 2 mac releases (Exaggeration).

Also, I save a lot of money by building my own PC... yeah, kinda get screwed on that with the Mac. Personally I would rather use linux, because I can build and upgrade freely.

But seriously just quit trying to convert people, be happy with your machine and I will be happy with mine. Again I have nothing against Mac, I thought about buying a Mac laptop. But OMG can the Mac community be annoying.
