Google Search Secrets, Nokia N800, DX10 Graphics, Apple Wins
DivX: 201MB

What's new in Episode 137
STUFF
• Unlike the N770, Nokia's N800 Internet Tablet doesn't suck! That's not to say that it's perfect, but it is a nifty way to browse the web if you've got $400 lying about. (Paul writes in to say the software upgrade for the N770 made a huge difference in performance. Thanks for the heads up!)
• Google Senior Engineer Matt Cutts brings us a giant pile of Google Search Tools and Tips! (And he's got even -more- coming!)
• What browser is Patrick using, Justin? He dotes on Firefox, but it's been sucking up CPU cycles, so he's been playing with Opera and still uses Internet Explorer for one thing or another almost every day.
• Colins got pix of one tech's efforts to save data with the lunch room fridge. And, yes, the data was saved.
• Google doesn't see your web site, Brad? Add your URL to Google.
• A DX10 GPU with HDMI and HDCP for an HTPC? Rob, you've got one option today...
• Why no Ubuntu? UnixRootsu writes us back with a list of the Linux distros in his quiver, along with the reason he disdains Ubuntu!
• Did we mention Bill Gates and some pretty pictures of Leonardo da Vinci's work? You can check out Leo's notebooks (and a lot more) at the British Library in Shockwave or a special 'Turning the Pages 2.0' version for Vista and XP.
NEWS
• Apple Settles With Apple Corp. Forever. Agreement should allow Apple to offer The Beatles catalog on iTunes. (BTW, have you seen Steve Jobs response to the DRM lawsuits in Europe? Thoughts on Music? It's a great read.
• Mark (who called in a bomb threat) and Ian (who's got some good points) email in with their side of the Boston Mooninite Bomb Scare. (Robert and Patrick remain divided on calling in advertising threats...)
And Now For Something Completely Different
• We've got some good news for GoDaddy shoppers that had troubles with the DLTV code
• On Thursday's show: Ubuntu, dual booting Vista, Joost and the search for a better home server...

You'll Find More DL.TV on MEVIO along with some great audio shows.

What is the right RSS feed for getting iPod Video for my PSP? I can use the link for iPod video for each show manually but the RSS feeds seem to be for the non iPod video formats. I do not use iTunes and want the RSS feed for PSP / iPod Video.

How about a review of home firewall hardware, IPCop, Monowall, SME Server, etc..

Can we have more video segments from Roger on modding Xbox (sofmod the old Xbox was great!) Xbox 360 firmware and PSP firmware 3.03OEC etc

Show rocks!

Also you mensioned VLC can you show how to use it for realtime transcoding to the PSP to browse media on the PC, select and view with over the wire transcoding, there is a version of VLC for the PC to allow this via wifi onto the PSP in real time! One for Roger?

RE: Seth wants iPod RSS feed
Seth, I am glad to know I am not the only person who was looking for the plain RSS newsfeed for the iPod version of dl.tv. For some reason, it isn't on the left sidebar or on the "Subscribe for Free" page even though a lot of us with portable systems or older computers prefer to use that version. The crew at DL.TV should really make it available like the other news feeds.

Anyway, the URL address for the iPod / PSP version of DL.TV is [ http://rssnewsapps.ziffdavis.com/audioblogs/DLTVvidcast.xml ].

I personally don't care for the iTunes software either, but I do understand that a lot of people prefer to use it to manage their music and podcast collections. I hope that link helps.

Apparently the bluetooth between your brain and mouth didn't work well in this show either.

Love the show. Some comments:

1. During the Google interview, Patrick's orange shirt made him look like a dangerous prisoner in an orange jump suit.

2. Robert went on too long about his view that people in Boston overreacted (last episode too). I don't think homeland security is your guy's area of expertise. The show is better when you stay on tech. If Robert was right, a terrorist could just glue a lite-brite on top of a bomb and plant it wherever they want. Remember "lack of imagination"? The people who reported this in Boston where properly carrying out their civic duty in being vigilent and aware of their surroundings.

3. Your review of the Nokia 800 gave the impression that it doesn't play video well. You should clarify that you meant that in regard to streaming video. Even my Nokia 770 plays video files stored on the memory card nicely.

4. Patrick says "sucks" too much. E.g., "Nokia 800 doesn't suck", "Bluetooth sucks day". Please use better language.

Howdy Dustin,
1) Reviews are mixed. Some folks love it... some folks hate it. the shirt is actually red, btw.

2) Yes, we're done w/ homeland security.

3) Actually, it's not just streaming video that plays so-so on the 800. I thought a number of viddys I played on from memory were jittery. Might be the size of the video I was watching. (640x480 500Kbps + bandwidth)

4) I'll agree to use 'sucks' less often... hate to over use a word. But sucks -is- my better language... and somehow much more socially acceptable to me than 'blows.' Heck, even my Mom says "that sucks."

That said, I'll try to find some more words to describe things/services/situations that offer unacceptable levels of dissapointment... just in fewer words.

Just a quick question, which of the following download formats offer the best video quality: DivX, Windows Media Player or Quicktime H2.64
Thanks

Astonishing how the media gets the term "0-day" so shockingly wrong. Their definition of "zero-day" is totally wrong. They say that a zero-day threat is any flaw that has no fix for it? Well, every exploit at some point has no fix for it, so are they all "0-day"? The real definition of 0 day would be any exploit that is a threat on the day of release of a piece of software. For instance, if there had been flaws in Vista discovered on the day of release, that's a zero-day threat. The term zero-day is from the warez community originally, it referred to pirated software that was available for download on or prior to the day of release of the official retail versions.

I used to download the wmv version and changed video players recently so I tried to switch my ipodder rss address to what you've got listed for Ipod (mp4) and nothing downloads. What's the problem? The other media feed rss links work. Please don't tell me to get it from Itunes. So far I've got to manually download each episode but don't plan on doing that much longer.

Oh guys how can you even say the 770 sucks. Is the coolest device out there, I have used Nokia 770, basically can get mp3 by wifi and rsync to my box.

Nokia 800 rocks hard, but I even think 770 has more advances over the 800, specially the hard shell to unscratch the display.

In response to the GoDaddy 10% promo code clarification that Patrick mentioned regarding the discount "applying to ALL" sales including RENEWALS and NOT just new orders... well I'm sorry to report that Patrick's info is 100% incorrect!!! I have a domain that is expiring on the 15th of Feb and attempted to RENEW IT using the "DLTV" promo code after placing the item in my shopping cart. Well guys, I'm sorry to report THIS DOES NOT WORK. A little "** sub-note" appears and says that the promo code does not apply to renewals... it only applies to new orders!

Update regarding my previous post about using "DLTV" coupon code when renewing domain names at GoDaddy.com. I just wanted to provide a bit more info about my problems trying to use your code and thereby helping you guys make some money. Well after trying to enter your code "DLTV" many times, I gave up and figured Patrick got his info wrong... perhaps domain renewals really are excluded as per the GoDaddy notice stating the same thing. Well, just on a whim, I decided to try entering Diggnation's coupon code (which i didn't know but guessed correctly). And guess what guys? It worked for my domain renewal. I reason I'm posting this IS NOT shill for Diggnation which I haven't even watched since Thanksgiving. It is to inform you that either something is wrong with DL.TV's GoDaddy agreement or Diggnation has negotiated a different agreement with GoDaddy. Either way, you are loosing money for no good reason! I felt guilty using another show's discount code, but heck, 10% is 10% so I'll take what I can get. FYI, I have more products I'll be renewing with GoDaddy soon and would prefer sending some money your way. I suggest checking into this ASAP because I guarantee I'm not the only one you're loosing ad/referral dollars from!
