Linux doesn't play nice with ATI cards, or rather, ATI considers Linux the open source special ed kid in the back of the class. For a company that insists that the special kids shouldn't be handling knives, they sure don't do the cutting too well themselves.
You guys also might want to stop wasting your time and either use a auto-installing app for ubuntu (I forget the name, but there was an app that went through and auto downloaded and installed all the non-free nice apps that you end up installing anyways) or just use Linux Mint. You'll still have to install the ATI driver but you can save yourself a bunch of time and pain since it includes all the apps everyone installs anyways. Simple fix for all your pain of course, just put an Nvidia card in the machine ;)
Not to pile on the work or anything, but feel free to installed Beryl (fork of Compiz) on there and get all the eye candy.

I just watched the latest episode and found the 150 second GUN/Linux segment quite interesting. Maybe the Ziff Davis people should add another podcast to their lineup. A show dealing with Unix based material, hosted by people who show some adequate skills in using it, just like the DL guys are in Windows OS's.

The layout of your new video player is nice, but the huge advertisement that's always in view has finally inspired me to just download the show rather than using the flash player. I realize you have to pay the bills, but the ad is so distracting, it diverts focus away from you and what you're saying. Can't the ad "fade out" after a little while, say after 30-60 seconds, once its point is made? Then you could flash it back up for another 30-60 seconds at the start of each segment. Just a thought. Love your show and everything you do. Thanks!

Tried it. In two minutes, found that I definitely do NOT like it! It's bumping my CPU usage on my 1Ghz laptop with W2K to 100% compared to around 65% average with old player! I normally download episodes but on occasion play them here. But with this CPU usage, I won't be able to do so anymore. It also caused my temp to be about 20 degrees higher due to extra usage.

Our family recently bought a Wii and loaded the Opera browser. Finally, I had an inexpensive system that ran flash and allowed me to watch DLTV on the big screen in the family room...that is until you switched to the new player. Opera on the Wii doesn't work with the new player. I just get a black screen. Oh well, back to watching the show on the old PC.

i'm so glad you guys finally did some more linux stuff. I hope you keep it up. One thing that'd be cool is a segment on samba and sharing with windows machines.

AutoMatix is the app you wanna use to automate the install of popular apps into Ubuntu. Their website has a great walk through as does the Ubuntu forum. I use Ubuntu as my only OS and I love it. Open SUSE was my baby for years but they messed up with 10.0(Sorry Robert).

Good to see ubuntu on the show, and hope to see more. Have you tryed using the python script "envy" to install the ati drivers?
If not go to this website http://www.albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html
and follow the instructions. If you still have trouble me or someone who views this may have the answer.
A good ubuntu resource is ubuntuguide.org
Awesome show!!

While the new flash player looks great, it sadly breaks compatibility with the Wii Opera browser. Looks like I'll be watching dl.tv on my laptop again.
Regardless, great show everyone and thanks for the great linux episode.

The ability to scan through the flash video now: good!
The inability to use Opera's zoom functionality to scale up the elements in the page (including the flash): Not so good! (Obviously I don't much care about video quality for this sort of thing, but I do like to kick back away from the computer screen and watch without having to wait for a download).

Patrick doesn't know about Fifth Gear? This I find odd seeing as he's into all that Baja stuff... Fifth Gear is perhaps the greatest automotive enthusiast program that there is... I mean we're talking about Jeremy Clarkson, damn it! Fifth Gear has alot of similarities with Patrick's own life experiences, in that it's a rebranded version of Top Gear, as alot the TechTV/G4 show hosts have done themselves... Screensavers to TWiT, anyone? Seriously though, Patrick go to Wikipedia and look this stuff up for yourself.... Do not collect $200... Hell, I'll even provide the links for you... You can also go to Google and find copious uploaded clips from the show...

The new flash player LOOKS nice...but...on my 700mhz Compaq tower (running Ubuntu and Flash player 9) the video resembled more of a slide show than fluid video. It took a great deal of time to load as well. The old player worked great on this machine and the Wii. This new one, though, does not start at all on the Wii and is a slide show, at best, on the Compaq. I have to resort to the flash, btw, since the mp4 video was removed. I'm a dumb@$$ with Linux and have not yet found anything that will play wmv, mov or h264 (which, I suspect, would not work anyway since it appears to be very cpu hungry.) And, yeah, I've watched you guys a couple of times on the Wii. Don't laugh..it was already on the big screen and it plays your old player just fine.

Guys, don't forget that once you log in as a different user your home directory (~) changes. So if your username was dltv your home directory is "/home/dltv", but once you "sudo bash" or "su" so that you become the superuser (root user), your home directory changes. In the case of root, your home directory is "/root". Any other user, the home directory is "/home/username". So if you need to get back to your Desktop where a file is, you would use the command "cd /home/dltv/Desktop".
The reason that your Google queries were not working is because boolean operators need to be in capitals (upper-case letters) and Google doesn't use the word NOT for the boolean NOT operation even though it does use both AND and OR. For NOT, Google uses the minus sign. So your search for sites with "Patrick Norton" but without "Ziff Davis" would have to be 'Patrick Norton -Ziff-Davis' or 'Patrick Norton -"Ziff Davis"' (without single quotes).

The new video player has been working great for me! It seems to be more responsive than the other one, and loads both the entire show or individual segments effortlessly. It's an improvement, for sure! Thanks to whomever is responsible.

Patrick, twice I have noticed you pronounce FiOS as "fee-os". Why? Clearly the "Fi" stands for fibre. Do you also say 'fee-ber'?

Good job on the new player. The ad is a bit too big but other than that it's great. Love the fact that you can slide through the show instead of those horrible fast forward /rewind buttons.

Walking out with earphones in front of a bus is not a Darwin award situation. It is a new potential for law suits against apple for not having proper safety built into the music device to not allow people to do this unsafe activity. Lawyers will mine this new area of legal issues in the future. With a good lawyer it is not your fault you did something stupid it is apples.

I think the proposed law in NYC regarding crossing streets with gadgets on is just dumb. I regard laws like that and seatbelt and helmet laws as being laws against natural selection. If you are too ignorant or stupid to be able to cross a street safely, or to wear your seatbelt when driving, or to wear a helmet when riding then you deserve to be removed from the gene pool. People that say there are more and more idiots every day are only noticing the effects of years of laws interfering with natural selection.

livid luddite: You can download the 'Live CD' @ https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD
This will allow you to burn the ISO to a CD and then boot from that exclusively. This is the best way to 'demo' the system without installing it. No fear of messing up your current system.
Also, if there are any other Joost invites available out there, I would happily take one of someone's hands..
