What's new in Episode 143
STUFF
• DIY NAS Part 1: The easiest way to build your own 'network attached storage is all about all about sharing folders!
• This Old Dell PowerEdge: Your ideas for recycling an older server.
• System Information for Windows: One nifty tool for inventorying -everything- on your Windows box.
• "Which is best and which is going to win out. HD or Blu-ray?" Tough question, Harold.
• "You mentioned compact florescent light bulbs in a recent episode you can check out places to recycle them at Lamprecycle.org. Thanks Alex!
• "You can catch curling on TSN.ca broadband" says Andrew, Andrew, Andrew, Bryan, Gilles, Kaitin, Paul, Scott, Sean... now all we have to do is figure out how to spoof a Canadian IP address so TSN won't refuse to roll the video for us. Stupid licensing agreements... we can watch the Hockey stuff, why not Curling!
• DIRECTV vs. BestBuy... or how Patrick wasted a couple hours this week.
• FlightAware = a spiffy visual way to track one flight... or all of them.

Please do cover IP spoofing to access country restricted broadband video on Thursday, as you perhaps jokingly closed the show with today.

in the philippines

buying movie tickets using a cellphone comes in handy when you don't want to wait in line...a 2D barcode is sent to your phone and you scan it to print out your ticket...pretty cool

it saved me from waiting for the next showtime

For people who dont know what curling is, think shuffleboard, the game played by 80 year old Floridians, but played on ice.
Its actually less exciting than shuffleboard which is a 'let if fly' kind of game. Curlers spend time discussing their shots even though there is only three ways to go: straight, to the left and to the right.
Curling is what you get when the weather is too cold for golf yet you want to kill 3-4hrs being bored to tears.
Curling is another one of those sports that are played by less than 10 countries in the world and we get to claim we are the best at. Thank god for the winter olympics, where obscure events get their 15mins.
(we made a national hero out of a girl whose 'sport' is a mix of cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. Trust me, its even more boring than it sounds.)

J'me crosse, tu te crosses, aller vous faire tous crosser!!!

I could not agree with you more Patrick I'm saddened that Roger doesn't enjoy one of the best Programs EVER. I use winamp for all my music needs from podcasts, shoutcast programs and syncing my ipod. I have been using winamp since 1998 even though Nullsoft was bought by America Online, I've still a loyal fan for almost 9 years now and its still the same little program that was by my side through good times and bad. Through harddrive crashes, formats and OS reinstalls from Windows 95 to Vista come it will always have a place in my heart GO WINAMP!

One of the interesting uses for ye' olde Dell 2400 that was suprisingly missing from your coverage is as an Asterisk/telephony server. Yes, one would need at least one additional part (some kind of VOIP analog adapter 50-100$ range) but the rest is installing your fav' Linux distro and following one of many very helpful manuals on the net (I personally found most useful the Kevin Rose/John Todd Rev3/Systm episode on the topic, but there are many other resources as well). My similarly aged PC is running SUSE 10 and mainly living as an Asterisk server (I can even do other common desktop duties without any problem on it).
