What's new in Episode 144
STUFF
• HDTV Roundup: Robert's reviews some of the latest high-def TVs he's thrashed in his Lab
• DIY NAS Part 2: FreeNAS... very cool BSD distro optimized for network storage. It's kinda complicated for a newbie (like Patrick) to set up without a helping hand: you'll definitely want to download the Setup and User Guide, before you start installing!
• EGM drops buy to give Scott the deets on Motorstorm... dirt... trucks... racing... mmmmmm.
• Viewer Pix O' The Week: Terry... nice tech space!
• Not allowed to view that (curling) video from your home country? Try viewing it via a proxy server. Anybody got one in .CA they'll share with us?
• Daniel's got one last use for an old Dell PowerEdge Server.

Hello,
Does anyone know the artist and the song name of the song used in the eMusic commercial? The song with at least four "Hey-ya" in a row.
I can't figure it out. Someone out there probably knows! Help me! :) Thanks.

Loved your segment on FreeNAS... seems like a great program. FYI, I also just received my invitation to MS's Windows Home Server beta. It looks like a great NAS solution, but it's hardware requirements are shockingly high compared to that old K-7 600Mhz junker the DLTV crew used for FreeNAS! MS recommends a MINIMUM of a P4 cpu and 1/2GB RAM for Win Home Server. I found this little blurb from the install notes interesting:
"In Beta 2 we switched our bootable setup DVD from using the XP generation WinPE, to the Vista generation WinPE (WinPE 2.0 I believe it is called). It appears that WinPE 2.0 is more susceptible to media failures than the older generation was. This could be due to its much greater memory requirements or the way data is laid out."
"Make sure your machine has at least 512MB RAM. WinPE 2.0 in the mode we use it in (WIM) requires something well north of 256MB and will fail in obscure ways if there is not enough memory."
Now granted, Windows Home Server offers more functionality than just basic NAS. But the trade-off is you won't be using that old junker in the corner on which a Linux-based NAS distro would run happily.

I went to two big box stores today, namely Bestbuy and CompUSA, and the mood in CompUSA was very depressing. I mean the two employees that weren't fired yet were visually distraught. To be a CompUSA employee right now must really stink.
On the not so bright side of things is that if you ever wanted to own a CompUSA cash register, now is the time to get one. I'm not kidding, they're for sale! The CompUSA closest to me must be cursed, since the last big named store there was The Wiz.
Then I went over to Bestbuy to look around, and when I talked to one of the employees, he whispered to me that he's gonna go over to CompUSA tonight to go buy some stuff. Glad that everyone agrees that closeout sales are great, even the competition's employees.
Anyway, best of luck to all the CompUSA employees who are now suddenly out of a job. I hope a new opportunity arises quickly.

Yeah it's sad CompUSA employees are loosing their jobs, but as for the store, I couldn't care less. Honestly, if a company can't compete they don't deserve to survive. I stopped shopping there years ago mainly for 2 reasons: uncompetitive prices and a horrid return policy. Their return policy alone is what probably drove them under... what retailer in their right mind would charge a restocking fee on EVERYTHING they sell unless the returned item is either unopened or broken? That's just crazy when none of your competition is doing this and they have lower prices to boot. Fry's rules!

Hi Guys,
Great Show - Thanks
FreeNAS is based on FreeBSD.
My FreeNAS box (AMDK6-300/96m RAM/CF) happily serves to OSX, XP, 98 and Ubuntu machines, for heavy duty transfers though, I use FTP.
Besides CIFS for windows shares, FreeNAS also supports AFP for Macs and
Unison sync allows me to sync my "My Document" folder across my Mac, Desktop XP and Notebook XP machines.
Check out:

Pretty Incredible for a free solution.

Hey guys,
I have a cheap option for an effective NAS.
Vantec Nexxstar LX. Its only 90ish CDN here in Halifax.
I have one and am very pleased with it.
Cheers

I hope you guys try sme server as well as FreeNAS. I couldn't get FreeNAS to install on my one hard drive computer no matter what I did. I then found sme server, which is linux based, and it installed the first time. If you have a one SME Server also has a small package base. You can install mt-daapd, a itunes server, and itunes will instantly see it as a share. I no longer have to go through all the computers in my house and tell it to use a certain network drive for music.
Another solution is using the Linksys NSLU2 and unslug it. Basically putting modified firmware on it to allow it use linux packages. It is also the best solution if you have power expenditure requirements IMO.

SME Server will also automagically set up a one hard drive computer for Raid 1. So when you hook up the 2nd drive sometime in the future it will build the drive into the Raid 1 group. Pretty sweet. I haven't personally tried this yet but will post when I do.

i'm (was) a die-hard fan of call for help and the screen savers for years. my whole world revolved around that time slot. (i have direct tv) when the show went off the aire, i felt as though my best friend had died. g4's attack of the show (sub for screen savers) has become anything but a show for those seeking tech knowledge. i saw patrick on attack of the show the other night and was very HAPPY to find out that he and a few of my favorite hosts had moved to the Net via DL.TV. i've followed chris p. on lokergnome and now i can view my "heroes" on DL.TV. i thank you and GOD for this blessing. please continue to do the great work that you and your staff are doing. you have found a true "follower" in me.

I ran it in IE7 and it asked to allow MSXML 3.0 SP 7 from Microsoft and Quick Time perhaps MSXML is not so loving with Firefox? mmmm

Look I love the show, LOVE IT... but here is what I don't understand.
WHY? FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, Why is it whenever there is a HDTV Review or showcase of latest LCD or plasma's don't you just tell me what I want to know?
ALL I Want to know Maybe like Most of the people picking up these lcd's and plasmas is which one is the best for GAMING. That's it, I NEED TO KNOW THE BEST GAMING LCD OR PLASMA HDTV OUT THERE.
FOR THE LOVE OF God, you have access to all the HDTV's I would love to test my PS3 on but can't. PLEASE PLEASE just tell me which one has no ghosting , which one is perfect for PS3, which one will be the best Computer Monitor for playing F.E.A.R from MY PC.
I wish the guys at bestbuy would let me hook up my PS3 to each one of those HDTV's but it's not going to happen so I beg you PLEASE, PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD ALREADY TELL ME WHAT WORKS BEST FOR PS3.
Your review of the new sharp was great told me that it didn't really improve with that 120mhz they claimed to be running at.(I was waiting for that TV and I was hoping it was the one.)
But what you didn't tell me is what does work GREAT.
For once and for all do what no other site or show has done and buckle down and go in that HDTV room ya'll have there and don't come out until you have on overall best, out right now or coming soon GAMING HDTV.
Please I NEED THAT ANSWER, i'm pulling out my hair trying to decide and I just can't take it anymore.
Just pick one that works the best for GAMERS. THE BEST GAMEING (PS3)-xbox360 if you must) HDTV LCD or PLASMA that's also GREAT AS A PC MONITOR. WHO IS THE WINNER? That's all i need to know.. ...PLEASE
and yes as if you can't tell i'm a serious GAMER.. LOL

For Zera;
WRT the music in the Emusic ad.
Go the website (EMUSIC.COM) and click on the bottom where it says WATCH OUR TV COMMERCIAL. Here you can see both ads. Off to the right there are links for the music that is used in each of the ads.
The music that is used in the first commercial 'A Place' is Bloc Party "So Here We Are" - (Great Album). So your band is either the New Pornographers or The Delgados.

Tried FreeNAS on an old P3 this weekend. Very easy to install and set up, especially with the User Guide. Thanks for the heads up on this, DLTV folks. Great info as always.
In fact, the hardest part was that I forgot the password to my router -- causing me to have to reset the router and hunt down the old WEP key so that the various laptops/PSP/etc around the house could still access the network w/out having to reenter all the WEP keys. Installing FreeNAS was a breeze compared to this. :)
Having set up FreeNAS now, though, I'm considering instead using this box for KnoppMyth, running Samba so I can use it as both a DVR and file server at the same time. Of course, I'll have to buy some additional hardware, which may delay that project...

I'd really like to see a review on NASLite-2 done on DLTV, it's nearly twice as fast as Freenas in transfer speed, it doesn't have as many features, but my grandmother could set it up. Freenas is extremely slow, I benchmarked it against a stock freebsd/webmin install and it was nearly 30% faster, too much bloat in freenas in my opinion.
