Hey Guys, thanks so much for the post to let us know what is happening. It is sooo much nicer to be informed ahead of time, than to hear little or nothing before show time.

Looking forward to the next episode when you can get to it.

Hope Mr. Norton gets back safely.

Any word about how Mr. Heron is doing?

Travel heck is a pain. I think with all the miles he routinely covers, Patrick needs to get a private pilot's license. :) Hey, if he tapes the whole process & turns it into a feature for DL.TV, would it be tax deductible? :D

Along the same lines as what it costs to run a PC 24/7, I have another question -- one that speaks to my own neuroses: What other dangers could arise from running a PC unattended 24/7? In particular, are there any fire dangers, especially with an old power supply? Is the old HP I picked up this weekend a fire risk, as it putters away in a carpeted, somewhat untidy room, with nary a case fan (only a power supply fan)? Any other risks associated with older PCs?

Yep, I'm neurotic.

Hope you both get to feeling better. We want no losing of the eyeballs for Mr. Heron and no losing of the mind for Mr. Norton. Good luck to all of ya!

Hi, there is a lot of talk on how much better CF bulbs are to save energy.

True, but the problem with CF is the stuff in them. They are a lot more toxic than a filament in a normal bulb, or an LED.

Why has the push not been to make more LED bulbs that work in the household?

Bulbs with LEDs as the light source will work from -40°C up to +85°C - from - 40° Fahrenheit to +185° Fahrenheit!

Up to 60,000 hours

http://www.ccrane.com/lights/led-light-bulbs/cc-vivid-led-light-bulb.aspx

http://www.theledlight.com/

I searched and there are some being manufactured but until there is a big tree hugging push for these the price will not be competitive.

Is it that the LED bulbs would last so long that the manufacturers would not need to make many replacement bulbs? And that they would loose money in the long run?

Plese check out Dell's site about energy savings and thier computers. Its really cool to see the different configurations of processors and monitors and whether your running applications compared to not.

Compact Fluorescent? How about one of those LED ones? They are supposed to be below five percent normal usage.

All that you have to do to open many tabs as your homepage is just have all the tabs open then click Tools Options and use current tabs. No bookmarks needed.

on the subject of opening multiple web pages in Firefox. You can create a desktop shortcut (windows) with multiple urls.

example shortcut:
http:\\www.dl.tv|http:\\www.digg.com|http:\\www.whatever.com

just make sure to separate the url's with a "|" (shift + \) w\o quotes

one problem, you need to close the browser before opening another multi-link shortcut. Other than that its a cool way to organize links and keep them on the desktop

A Watt is a measure of energy per time. One Joule used every second is a Watt. One Joule is about the energy it takes to lift one pound a foot. Or if you like car analogies 100 horsepower is about 75 kilowatts.

What's up with Robert Chang's tee shirt? Seems Soviet missiles point at, and ready to kill my family is something appropriate to wear on a podcast. I'm not trying to be an old foggy, but Damn!

@Karate Media

Yes, there's a fire risk although it's minimal. But you really should get that old HP off the carpet! Put it on a sold surface and make sure it's well ventilated.

And if you possibly can, get it up off the floor entirely - and definitely off the carpet. Not only will the carpet insulate the heat and make it liable to run hotter, but you're much more likely to accumulate dust inside if it's on the floor. Take it apart and clean it out if necessary, but definitely try to keep it off the carpet.

And as Patrick said - if you don't NEED it on 24/7, just switch it off at night and when you go out. It's safer and you'll save money.

Regarding setting multiple tabs as your homepage in Firefox, if you prefer to do it manually, you could just go into the preferences and type in, for instance:

http://nytimes.com|http://dl.tv

It will open the New York Times and dl.tv as two tabs for your homepage. The "|" (minus the quotes) indicates to the browser, as earlier mentioned in the post about desktop shortcuts, that you want multiple tabs.

When they make CF bulbs that can do ALL of the following (that incandesant bulbs do now), then maybe I'd consider them fully usable, but not until then!
1) Output full light amount in less than 1/4 sec in any temp, especially less than normal room temp. CF in outside applications in freezing temps? Not likely! Takes well over a minute to max light using CF is my experience, and that was indoors!
2) Not interfere with AM radio reception, even if radio right next to bulb. Even having radio in next room isn't possible with CF, it seems.
3) Same 'warm' light color and not harsh bright white. Most all CF are too white and industrial look.
4) Use same clip-on-to-bulb lamp shades, from antique lamps, but CF bulb design doesn't seem to work with these, even the newer shaped ones.
5) And in some cases, need to provide the same heat output when bulbs are used to create spot warmth plus light to growing plants in colder rooms.

Love Patrick Norton and Roger Chang, Roger's doing a fine job. His rants are entertaining and of course he's always been good with the technology information. Same goes for Patrick.

@Patrick Norton - just finally finished watching the end of this ep. Did I hear a Jesus Lizard reference in there?

@Dom -- thanks. I'm trying out FreeNAS on an old HP, which means I don't need it on 24/7, but I am considering adapting it into a KnoppMyth box, which would probably mean running it close to 24/7. I've always been pretty uptight about being sure to turn off my PCs, but I know a fair amount of folks who never turn their PCs off. My wife's office doesn't turn off any of their computers at all (not servers, just individual desktops).

I did take the PC off of the carpet and "jerry-rigged" (in a sense) a new fan to cool the hard drives.

Thanks!

Like previous posters, I'm wondering where to find that poster? I want to give it to all my comp sci professors when I graduate! They suffer from M$ addiction. Or perhaps it's because the school accepts all of M$'s donated software - It's all they teach! In fact, when I asked my database instructor how to use PHP to integrate the database into a website, she said, "What is PHP, anyway?" :( They only show us how to use Visual Studio for that...
