What's new in Episode 148
NEWS
• Roger Chang's still in for Robert Heron, who promises he's coming back to work someday. When his eyeball no longer makes the Doctor go "Oh... my... that's... uh... improving nicely!" (Just kidding, Rob!)
• The viewer pic o' the week comes from John, who is -extremely- tall, and has quite the aesthetically pleasing computer room. Threre's mood lighting! Not to mention a -lot- of monitors! Thanks for sharing, John!
• Blu-ray and HD DVD playback in one box: LG's BH100 ($800-$1200), aka the "Super Multi Blue Player" is the only act in town. Full review next week, today we show off the menus you get on the HD DVD side of things. They're not quite right.
• Come May, LG should release the GGW-H10N, a combination Blu-ray disc burner/reader, and HD DVD read-only drive that will cost about the same price as the BH100, $1200.
• Speaking of next gen DVD content, Toshiba is releasing a $400 external HD DVD drive, and DL.TV viewers have spotted Toshiba's HD-D1 HD DVD players at Walmart for less than that. (Matter of fact, HP's external HD DVD drive is already for sale at Walmart for $420.)
• Will HighDef change the way we see news? Can emerging media be exploited for evil? Dan Rather takes a few minutes to talk to us on how new tech impacts mass media, and how the rules of good reporting shouldn't change much if you're a blogger, or on a big network.
• John's got something to say that involves Dan Rather and, uh, fracking... not to worry, John, there's still lots of tech in the show.
• NJ law says you can't toss CF lightbulbs in the trash. Good thing: they contain mercury. Don't want to drive? Glenn, time to fire up your inner activist and get somebody in your town to collect 'em so you don't have waste gas yourself.
• Regarding Roger's lack of pants on the show ( See episode 146...) Matt and Brian write in. "Hell yeah!!!: says Brian. Matt concurs. It would appear that Nude Computing is on the rise. Again.
NEWS
• Next Tuesday: Cool tools for your cell phone. And Twitter. And... possibly... the return of Robert.

I agree the same day post has been great. Can not wait for the optimized code to take advantage of 4 or more cores. Can not wait to see the show later tonight. Cranky Geeks site looks great.

You guys are doing GREAT, but I miss Robert! ;o(
As someone who has had several eye surgeries (laser, on both retinas), and has other multiple vision problems, I do empathize with Robert, and am not trying to be pushy, but I sure hope he will be able to come back and do the show soon.
Note to Robert: You are irreplaceable! Besides your technical knowledge, you make me laugh, and you're so darned cute! If only I was 30 years younger! LOL

So we may soon see the "terrorist" video in HD or Blue ray?
By the way here in the school district we use iPrism(tm?) and it is great for KILLing IM clients and P2P (also we stop it all at the firewall).
Do you guys know about LED light bulbs, and could you do the same power charts for them?

Dear Patrick,
I wanted to post my comments regarding the partition placed in front of the broadcast table; however, my C drive died. Dell replaced the drive and I thought that since I was at a juncture, I might as well try Windows Vista.
What I discovered about Vista is that it handles data differently. Sector 63 becomes sector 2063, etc. The install of Vista on my C drive implied Vista would also take over my D drive (unbeknownst to me) which had all my backed up data, thesis, papers, pictures and other valuable info. This experience made me heart sick and I lost some several nights of sleep. I am working on methods of recovering that data which are within my budget as a public high school English teacher. I am glad for the tech adventure and learning experience; nonetheless, I wish it was with someone else's drive and not my own.
Regarding the partition and your TV set. You could try the manly staple gun with some black crepe or bunting stapled around the edges of the desk behind which you sit, or even better, you could become the class project of an Interior Design class at San Francisco State or some such similar institution, and as the Bay Area is the epicenter of Interior Design classes, I am sure you will have no problem coming up with a more appealing, less Spartan (Sparticus perhaps) set design.
With love, affection, and admiration,
Ray

RAPHAEL (RAY) WOLFF, my heart goes out to you.
I wish you nothing but luck in your recovery attempts. This is one of the reasons why I keep all of my imperative data on a detached hard drive, which is only updated and brought online once a month.

I thought the Dan Rather comments were on the mark, this man has been around the block enough times to know the field. It is good to hear a seasoned veterans take on new technology and the effects it has on day to day life and world views. I was going to skip through his comments, but was glad I didn't. Good job DL.TV for the interviews. Keep up the great work!

DL-TV News on 15 March, 2007. A notable error - Austria is not the same as Australia.
"Aussie Firm: We can print Organic Microchips. Cool. We need to see that!"
How the good Burgermeisters of Linz feel about being called Aussies, has not been determined at this time.
