STUFF
• Robert's back! He says "I had the vitrectomy/membranectomy/fluid-gas exchange/endolaser(w/side of fries) done on my left eye." Don't click on the link if you're squeamish.
• Sorry, Chad, DVD playback on the Xbox 360 sucks... and, no, buying the HD DVD add on won't help. (Tho it does a find joby playing HD DVDs.) Extremetech's Jason Cross wrote an outstanding 360 DVD playback quality article that mad Xbox fanboy teeth gnash on at least six continents
• X-Cannon wants to track his bandwidth usage so he doesn't go over a 10GB quote and run up an $8 per GB vig... You could try something like AnalogX's NetStat Live... or check your router to see if you can log the bits. Got any suggestions, a favorite app? Email us at dl.tv@ziffdavis.com with 'count my bits' in the subject line!
• Oh... here's a link to the ExtremeTech podcast with the Vista Performance & reliability tool discussion If you've got ideas on how to use those tools, build up custom tools to monitor things like your total internet useage, let us know!
• Emilio asked for help stopping P2P bandwidth abuse in the office. You've gave us some good answers!
• DLTV on Twitter? Yup. We want you to help us test this strange little application that answers "one simple question: What are you doing? Answer on your phone, IM" or on the web. Perfect flash mob/Friday night party tool/sweet way to update the Spouse... or is it just, as Roger calls it, "a massive ego stroke." Help us test it out.
• Can any four drives make a RAID? Sure, Brian, but you might not like what you end up with. And you can definately DIY a RAID out of an old PC case.

So two "gentlemen", One known as Mr. Tri and the other Mr. Caster walk into a bar. The bartender has an obvious weasel in his shorts so Mr. Tri asks Mr Cast......

Welcome back, Robert!

Glad to see you in good spirits and on the mend.

Man...! They took the jelly out of your eye and replaced it with a gas - which I guess, is now being absorbed.... Yikes!

Best of luck on a complete and speedy recovery!

Robert, monitoring and reporting of system parameters in Windows NT - XP is handled by the same program as it is in Vista. The program is Performance Monitor (perfmon.exe). PerfMon has the ability to display graphical statistics on almost any parameter, including network usage. It also has the ability to log those statistics for later analysis. But, PerMon also offers the ability to do alerts or perform an action (execute a script that could email or page an admin or place a pop-up onscreen) based on a monitored element.

Reliability Monitor is new in Vista but, it's far less useful than perfmon, which you weren't aware of despite the fact that it has been a critical component of Windows NT and later since circa 1996. But, don't let a lack of knowledge stop you from cluelessly pontificating. It never has before.

In response to Brian's viewer question concerning setting up a network RAID array using some random HDDs he's got laying around, I'd recommend he signup for the Microsoft Windows Home Server Beta. I've been playing with it and like what I've seen so far. While I've run into a fair number of bugs, I can see it's going to be a very cool product when it ships. Two of the key features I like are its "infinite" storage expansion capability using any size hdds AND the ability to selectively enable data redundancy on a per folder basis without using RAID... the difference is MS's proprietary redundancy solution doesn't cause you to lose storage space when you're using various HDDs of differing capacity. It's a timed beta, but my copy is good for 1 yr. Plus it's based on a scaled back version of Windows 2003 server so I've been able to load up other apps on the box like bittorrent, FTP, HTTP, DDNS, etc...

OK, so I just joined Twitter -- but I don't see a way to search for DL.TV and ask to be added to your group. I only see that I can send out invites...

Am I doing something wrong? Or is this just fate's way of telling me that I really don't need to bother with Twitter?

Welcome back Robert.

I use to use Netstats. Now I use Codebox's Bitmeter. Its free and it can give you an alert based on amount downloaded or uploaded.
Per month I average between 30 and 40 gigs.
