What's new in Episode 155
STUFF
• Vonage ain't dead yet, Craig. They still have over 2 million customers, and it should take years for the Verizon suit to finish winding its way thru the courts.
• Cell phones are our first alternative to POTS/landlines. If you're that nervous about Vonage, we cover Skype, CallVantage and other VoIP replacements for POTS lines. Check for 911 support before you go with any VoIP provider if it's your only line!
• PCMag's Davis Janowski has a good writeup worth checking out if you're considering dropping your telephone service and going with VoIP: Voipin' With Your Eyes Wide Open
• Did Robert say " FLAC?" Yup, he did. It's the Free Lossless Audio Codec, and it's considered pretty spiffy by folks that love pure audio goodness.
• Winamp Alternatives Part One, aka Audio Players That Aren't iTunes, or Windows Media Player: Greg, John, Dyna and JKL say Foobar2000 looks simple, but has a powerful set of backend features, supports tons of audio formats and it's very customizable (thanks Infecto for the very shiny link!). musikCube is clean, simple, open source, and very not resource intensive... thanks Erik and Jean-Richard for the heads up. One more, say Ruhaan, Patrick and Jag, Songbird! Built on the same code base as Firefox, it supports local audio playback though it doesn't really shines until you point it at web sources, such as music blogs.
• PS: folks are still writing in to say that Winamp is better. Period.
• Oldversion.com: HÃ¥kan reminds us that many older versions of programs have been phased out/updated for security reasons... so be careful what you download and run!
• 500GB hard drive recco? No problem, Billy, but FireWire only enclosures aren't very common. You'll probably have to go with a USB/FireWire enclosure if you want to use a SATA drive... We forgot to mention on air that OWC aka MacSales.com has tons of FireWire drives. The drive we built on air was a BuffaloTech DriveStation. USB only drives are gonna be cheaper: We found the Western Digital's 500GB My Book Essential for $160 on the front page o' NewEgg.com.

Quick foobar2000 benchmarks (Robert mentioned speed with tons of files)
The test: 7884 mp3/wma/wav files in 1112 folders.
Drag and drop into play list: Just under 3 mins (has a nice little "currently adding" message). When the files showed up - they had full track info (artist / title / length)
Add to library: The same, about 3 mins. But the nice part of about foobar - dragging the "All music" super heading in the album list into the playlist window had everything added instantly.
I'm a huge audio nut. I rip my CD's (of which there are many) in 192kbps MP3 at the absolute bottom.

Winamp is also a video player, my primary use for it. Haven't found another player that works so well. I especially like some of the PVR-like features, like using arrow keys to jump ahead or back 10 seconds.

Why is Robert wasting his time with the whole lossless audio stuff? I haven't bought a CD or downloaded a song in a long time. I've got a suggestion YAHOO MUSIC SUBSCRIPTION. I pay 6 or 7 bucks a month and I can listen to anything I want directly from the player. I got rid of all my CDs years ago. Who needs them? Why do people waste time buying CD's off iTunes?

OWC (Other World Computing) also has SATA enclosures with all sorts of port combos. They're available with or without HDs preinstalled.

In addition to the single drive series, they also have simple RAID enclosures and other fun stuff.

Nice to hear that Robert's digging the FLAC. I ripped my 500+ CD collection to FLAC and have them stored on a server running ClarkConnect Home 3.2 with SlimServer as a service. That feeds to my two Squeezebox 3s, one of which is plugged into my hi-fi amp and the other in the kitchen with powered speakers. I chose FLAC over the other lossless formats as it seemed the most sensible option. I used Exact Audio Copy for the ripping. I didn't do the cue sheet rips and ain't about to go back and do it all again. The individual files work well and I absolutely swear by www.mp3tag.de to tag ALL my audio files (donation ware and very powerful - check it out)

Robert,
Look at FireWire Depot at www.fwdepot.com. They have a single enclosure with USB 2.0, FW400, FW800 & eSata. They also have many dual drive cases for the same money. You can even set these up as RAID boxes.
www.cooldrives.com has some, too.
check this one: http://fwdepot.com/thestore/product_info.php/products_id/1771

The problem with Vonage is that it looses close to 2.5% of its customers per months (30% per year). With a base of 2.2M customers that means that Vonage needs to replace 600,000 customers per year. If it is prevented from adding new customers, Vonage is dead.

I like foobar2000 & XMPlay better because they are light & does not suck up all of your resources to play an mp3 file or any other file for that matter. But XMPlay does not need to be installed, you just have to create a folder for it & unzip or drag the folder contens to the folder that you create for it, but one thing about (XMPlay) the default gui interface sucks a big one, so I always goto the XMPlay main web homesite & download a better frontend gui and I in stall it because I cannot stand the one that come with it by default, but this (XMPlay) plarer works very seemless and it to me is the lightest player that I have ever seen or used in a long time. Now all of these people that just love there Winamp to me aka (Wincramp) is always saying how good winamp is but the truth about Winamp is that it is a bloated piece of sluggish crap plain & simple & I have tested it on fast & slow systems anyway you go with Winamp it sucks I am sorry & I say death to Winamp all the way.
