What's new in Episode 159
STUFF
• Networking two buildings? Use fiber, not copper Ethernet!!! Otherwise you can create all kinds of electrical headaches... or kill two buildings worth of networks if one get hits by lightning. Or, if the ground potential is different enough between the two buildings... well, watch the show. We'll talk about it there. Thanks to Ken, Scott, John, Tim, Wayne, Mark and Tim for sounding the "Don't use copper Ethernet between two buildings!" alarm, and giving us lots of good info to answer Trey's question from Episode 156.
• DivX movies look better off your $100 DVD player than your $1500 Macbook? Chances are you do need to tweak your settings in VLC, the Video Lan Client, David! (Deinterlacing is generally -not- on by default, makes DVDs or any non-deinterlaced video look ugly. Robert reccos the X setting!
• PCI-X
vs. PCIe... you've got PCI-X (PCI Extended) on that motherboard, David. You want PCIe (PCI Express) for the latest and greatest in graphics cards.
• GoogleFight: Yes, Scott, we're stupid. We didn't put quotes around the names we searched!
• Mimobots aren't evil. They're limited edition USB thumbrives designed by artists. Oh... they've got Star Wars characters in 1GB to 4GB versions. Can you say 'collectible?' Roger says "never take it out of the box!"
NEWS
• Intel Cuts Prices on Dual and Quad-Core Processors to match AMD price cuts... it's a good time to be building our buying a new system. The E6400 is now $183, the E6300 drops to $113, and all Xeon uniprocessor models received cuts between 9 and 40%.
• " PC Gaming on the Upswing" says the New York Times. No matter what we said on air, the "prime reason is sales and subscription services of games like World of Warcraft." Retail sales are climbing, too... but the numbers we quoted on air are without online sales or subscriptions.

Can anyone tell me how to play the download "iPod/PSP" version on my PSP? I'm sure it's a simple matter of renaming the .mp4 file to something else. I'm using 1.5 firmware if that matters.
Thanks!

1) For years I've had trouble getting Best Buy to honor their online prices in their brick and mortar stores. Not because they checked a nefarious internal site with different prices, but because they flat out told me that their B&M stores don't match their online prices.
On numerous occasions, at various Best Buys, I've asked clerks why a particular item I was buying didn't ring up at the online price. And every time I was told that they simply don't match their own online prices.
I've always just taken their word for it and assumed that this was their policy. Now I'm not so sure. Does best Buy actually state somewhere whether the brick and mortar locations will match their own online prices?
2) AnonyMouse: Off the top of my head, I don't think the PSP version will work with the 1.5 firmware. One of the more recent FW updates (probably one of the 2.x updates) allowed the PSP to play "iPod-formatted" mp4 files. So, almost any podcast encoded for the iPod will now play on the PSP, but only if you update your firmware.
This was great for people like me, b/c I could download everything from DL.TV to Yacht Rock to my PSP. And it's great for folks like DL.TV, too, I suppose, since they only have to encode one version that will play on both iPods and PSPs.
But, it's not so good for folks like you, who prefer the earlier firmware....
That's gonna be a tough call for you, 'Nony! :)

KarateMedia - thanks for responding.. I can run a newish firmware (3.01) via a hack called "Devhook", I'll give that a try. The problem remains that if you put it within the MP_ROOT folder on the PSP, it has to conform to some weird naming convention. I do recall that a later firmware let you play videos that are outside of that dir, maybe that's the trick. Again, thanks..

The firmware that allowed for iPod vids to work on the PSP also added a "Video" folder (at the root level, I believe). The old naming convention does not apply to videos in that folder.
The old naming convention is pretty well documented on the web, so you'll probably find much about it via Google, but it follows something like this: M4V00901.MP4 ... that one from my own site, actually: http://karatemedia.com/secretmachines/pspvideo/M4V00901.MP4 -- plug, plug :)
There were two different folders, though, based on how the video was encoded. IIRC, any of these videos can now just be dropped into the Video folder.
Sony made it a real pain in the neck to work with videos at first, but it's gotten better with the firmware revisions. One of the latest firmwares supposedly allows for mp4s up to DVD resolution, but from what I hear, few have made it work properly.

I would have to disagree to your statement regarding running "copper" cat5/6 cable between two or more peers(buildings).
Have you taken a look at how "electrically isolated" the actual wire to ANY internal pc/router/hub component is.
Most common systems use a transformer arrangement at each end with more than 5KV isolation.
This model will survive most close lightning strikes - as one would assume a direct hit would be fatal - even to fibre (the internal wire would need to be exposed though)
Any equipment failure at any end will not automatically destroy the others that are connected.
Granted there are some advantages in non copper types and if you don't have any money limitations - then go for it.
For me, I wouldn't have any problem running cat5/6.
But I would take into consideration the distance involved as wireless will become a better option.
My humble opinion....

It works - DL.TV goodness on my PSP. For the benefit of others, here's how:
* you need a newish firmware (I used 3.01 running under devhook) - 1.5 won't work, doesn't support the video format DL.TV uses
* you can subscribe to the feed, that's certainly the easiest way, then you can download what you want, it'll put it in the right place - simple
* or you can manually download a particular episode on your PC and then copy it to the PSP:
* make sure you download the iPod/PSP version (duh)
* with your PSP connected to the PC via USB, you need to copy the video to the PSP's /VIDEO folder - not the old MP_ROOT folder
That's it - enjoy!
