What's new in Episode 168
STUFF
• Zonbu $99 PC: Broadband, Monthly Fee Required... Our beta machine was a little erratic, but the concept has a lot of potential.
• The PS3's new firmware update makes it a decent DVD player. Finally... now only if Microsoft would step up on the Xbox 360.
• Ford Sync: Brad wants an update what might be the automotive voice command system for your phone and music player coming to Ford vehicles this fall. (We can't wait to test it ourselves, Brad.)
• Do I need perfectly matched model numbers when I upgrade the RAM on my PC? No, Josh, you should just fine if you meet the specs for your PC or Mac.
• Upscaling DVD player or Home Theater PC? Good question, James.
• Will Folding@Home kill Maria's PC? We hope not, but SETI@Home did melt down a pair of Maria's machines two years ago.
• Speaking of F@H: Team DLTV has cracked the top 100! Way to go!

Very good show, thank you for the Folding@Home update. It will be nice to learn how that little PC turns outs. For most people it is perfect because all they do is surf and email anyway... Very nice... Keep us updated on it..

Finally managed to watch the live stream here in Germany! :-) Good episode, I liked the talk about the "99$" Linux-based PC. Good stuff!

Ummm Robert, the PS3 update did come with a adjustable noise reduction setting! While your DVD is playing, hit the triangle button and you'll see a option titled Image Quality Adjustment. In there it has adjustable settings for frame noise reduction and block noise reduction.

And btw Robert, I don't know if you saw it, but in the PS3's dashboard, when you go into the settings you'll see two new options under the display settings. These new options are RGB Full Range (HDMI) and Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super-White (HDMI). You should test the Blu-ray playback with these settings and report back in a future episode. The biggest issue reported with the PS3 it's Blu-ray playback was it's lack of true blacks. This solves that problems and makes both your games and movies look even better.

Patrick, you don't know what that thing was on the rabbit? Don't you remember sniffing a sum what similar plastic rabbit at CES? That is a gas chromatography, it enables the rabbit to smell.

Hey guys!! My dreams came true last night when i downloaded the 1.8 firmware update. Now if i can only get the stupid thing to connect to my PC (i tried using WM11 and Nero MediaHome) or my HP MediaVault. A future how-to episode on this big addition to the PS3 would be appreciated.

good episode, but you guys forgot to mention the RGB Full Range mode to FULL on PS3 new firmware, it made a huge difference on blackness on HDTVs especially for movies.

The $99 mini-PC was interesting. These small & cheap PCs are getting to be more and more useful. I enjoy the high end hardware more I guess, but it's still neat to see what $99 can buy these days. You can really do a lot of useful stuff with a small linux box like that. I've had some good fun with DD-WRT -- if you've not heard of it, it's a firmware replacement for cable/dsl/wireless routers that "opens up" the capabilities of the box beyond what is offered in the manufacturer-supplied firmware. And you can SSH in there (it's a linux box!), set up whatever services you want, hook up external storage (if you have the right router), etc.

Here's a link for DD-WRT:

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

The routers on the market vary quite a bit in terms of how much memory, how fast the CPU, expandability options, etc. so it's a good plan to check the DD-WRT compability chart before you buy a router.

Anyway - good show guys :-)

The Zonbu is NOT for linux garage hackers - that completely misses the point. I find that most people who have never had to deploy in the real world don't "get" what managed services is all about. "But can you put linux on it?" sheesh.
There's plenty of boss gear out there to get your linux onto and mess around.

@sdf
I actually think that the Zonbu people missed the right audience. Many of friendly "linux garage hackers" are interested in its hardware. To the best of my knowledge 249$ is cheaper than anyone can construct it themself (similar effect as for laptops: it doesn't pay to home build one). My interest is the same: could care less about managed services Zonbu provides; would love few of these as low power consumption home servers for specific tasks (ex. my present Asterisk server [old reused PC] sucks couple hundred watts just sitting there 24/7, Zonbu would do about 20 W at most, not to mention the compact size...).
Right audience for Zonbu: hobbists who would PUT LINUX (their own flawor/config.) on it and do great things with it. I am waiting for my first one...

The $99.00 system has been out for awhile now -- Cringely documented using one to put a movie player hub into his van. Anyway they run LINUX and WINCE (which is what they were built for originally). Try http://wdlsystems.com. They are pretty reliable I have a couple of linux servers that have been running for a few months without rebooting. If you want more speed then add $80.00 and go for the the faster processor.

The hardware used for the 99$ PC seems to come from eWay (http://www.ewayco.com/) where you can get a similar system for a seemingly lower price than the 249$.
