iPod/PSP: 135MB
DivX: 201MB

What's new in Episode 173
STUFF
• $149 for a 6 foot HDMI cable? Don't get caught up in the hype while you're buying that new HDTV. (My $18 HDMI cable works just fine.)
• The return of the missing viewer pix!
• Don't leave your iPod in your car: good reminder, Daniel! (Not so good ideas about DL.TV on the dashboard, tho.)
• Think your workstation is cool? Check out the endstation Karen uses at the synchrotron at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. She says, "basically, I use highly focused x-rays to probe the structure of deformed metals. I use a white-beam, or polychromatic, x-ray technique and capture Laue diffraction patterns on the large-area CCD in the picture." Cool!
• Safari Browser for Windows: Mark, Stephen, Chad, and everyone else... we're on it.
• How to make Opera (IE or Firefox) your default browser. This one's for Andrew.
• Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard"Anybody want to loan us an install disk from the WWDC to check out? In the meantime, here's Jobs favorite 10 features from the 300 or so promised.
• Broadbandreports.com is where Patrick finds his speed tests.
• You're right, Rudy, tape backup isn't dead, but we're still more into hard drives.

Sorry to hear about your sick bunny! I like the look of Safari for Windows and the slidey tabs! It's always nice to have a back-up browser so I'm not forced to use IE when I crash Firefox, lol!

WWDC was well.... not great
I'm glad we didn't get an iPhone song and dance I'm getting one any way (if the ever ship CANADA). Leopard is cool...kind of but hey at least its full 64 bit.

P.S. Apple direct X 10 is better than open Gl I'm a real fanboy and even I'll admit that. My Mac Pro

Safari - probably not that big a deal at this stage - but thanks for showing it. Thirty seconds was more than enough to satiate my curiosity. Same with WWDC. That's what makes this show awesome.

Yes, more on the $500 PC. I was hoping Patrick was going to build it on the show. I know it is not the usual format, but it would make for two or three interesting episodes, and a nice change from the normal format.

It would be interesting to see Robert and Patrick go at it like Siskel and Ebert used to. Or would they be more like Ralph Cramden and Norton?:)

$149 HDMI cable???
Let me see...
6' of copper cable,
Electroplated Gold connectors,
silver solder and flux....
You want 10 guage wire??

I can sell those for $70, and make a whopping $55 profit...
NOW if you want the Copper wire electroplated...Which really dont do alot, THAT will cost you.

Installed the Safari Beta, used it for 5 minutes, uninstalled it. It had problems displaying a gazillion sites...

And yeah the stuff at WWDC seemed somewhat... uneventful.

Sorry folks. I love my mac, but Safari is the worst browser on earth. It constantly opens pages in new windows instead of tabs. It's font anti-aliasing makes every word look fuzzy and smudged. And despite what my boy jobs says, it does NOT fully support AJAX.

Steve: skin Firefox and call it "Safari 2.0"

Safari for Windows looks pretty good so far, and it's working good for a beta.

I think eBay said it best. I fired Safari up just to have a look (if nothing else, it is a KHTML browser I can use for testing under Windows).

IE, Firefox, Opera, Safari... If you tried all these, you should also try Maxthon some time. It's a tabbed browser that uses the IE engine (unfortunately still the de-facto standard). Does an excellent job of filtering ad banners, animated gifs, annoying background music, popups etc. Check it out! www.maxthon.com (try the classic 1.6 version, the new 2.0 isn't quite ready yet)

Great show! Can you guys post links to the websites that sell the cheaper (actual) priced cables and the DSL speed checkers?

Thanks!

Great show as usual guys. I too have been using Monoprice cables based on the digital vs analogue signal theory. I just found a Gizmodo article, HDMI Cable Battlemodo: The Truth About Monster Cable, Part 2 and found it very enlightening (see link below).

I don't think I'll need to every stop using Monoprice cables, but others building in home theatres may need to think twice.

What's the Sony Ericsson phone that Robert is getting? Now I'm curious...

...the most interesting thing about the Safari announcement is that Jobs hailed it as "the most innovative browser" on the market...

Never mind the fact that Opera has had every single function - especially the tab manipulation that was demonstrated on the show - since, oh, the early jurassic era.

I wanna know what phone Robert is after...
