Portable speakers suck, right? We listen to Saitek's A-100 and A-200 and come away impressed with the oomph behind these battery powered portable speakers.

TechnoLustBunnyDeux, our Nabaztag/Tag is connected to the network. Joy. Send us a message thru the rabbit at this page (the name of our lapin is TechnoLustBunnyDeux)... we're working to get a netcam and mic pointed at the little guy.

The Viewer Pic of The Week comes from Kevin Lewis, who's decorated his home with monkeys much like the one that lives on our set.

XP Tip: Remove Extra Components from Windows XP (And for the dude that wrote in, Brooks is using a Dell, not a Mac Book Pro!)

Make Your New Ubuntu Linux Install Better: Automatix2 is a nifty graphical interface for installing applications and codecs onto Ubuntu, Mepis and Debian 4. Thanks to Bruce, Andrew and Phil for writing in about this.

Chad built his own notebook PC by installing a processor, graphics chip, RAM, HD and wireless card into a barebones system for. (Total cost for the 2.14 GHz Core 2 Duo system? $2200.) He says "the trick is finding the barebones retailers" and to start by checking out the offerings at rjtech.com, avadirect.com and directron.com. Chad adds "the downside to all this - zero warranty options other than for the individual components.

Connect your PS3 to a computer monitor with a DVI input? It should work just fine, Scott.

An alternative Open DNS Internet? You're looking for OpenDNS, Stephen. Some folks find it helps speed up their net access, some don't. It does a pretty good job directing you to the right page when you type in a URL, and it can protect you from phishing sites (and adult sites) if you set it up that way. It's safe to experiment with.

Doesn't Saitek make (or used to make) joysticks too?

You should have no problem sending your PS3 signal to a DVI compatible monitor. I haven't tried personally, but it should in theory work just like the 360's VGA cable. In fact, in today's Fry's ad, they are offering an HDMI to DVI cable for the PS3.

The HDMI to DVI adapter will not work on most dvi monitors...it will ONLY work on the ones with HDCP compatibility because I tried to connect my PS3 to my 3 month old Lg 19 inch LCD (1970HR) and the signal doesn't work because the monitor is not an HDCP compatible one which really sucks. Getting a new 40 inch 1080p Samsung soon though so that will be awesome.
Oh, and the connection is not the same as the 360's vga port because the analog RGB port does not have any copyright protection schemes such as DVI/HDMI. The only way to get HD out of the PS3 without HDCP is using component (because of the analog signal).

Look! He said Ubuntu. heeheehee..

I wanted to know if the Automatix2 does the same thing as the Linspire Click N Run (or jog)?

I dont mind apt-get personally but I understand the need for easy GUI installs to get more people to switch. Because I trust Kevin Carmony less than even Darl McBride, I would prefe r that Ubuntu stay away any potential trojan horse that Click N Run (or hop) might represent.
Hence, my question about comparing both.

I will try Automatix2 on my mom's dual boot 7.04 later tonight but it sounds like the perfect tool to help family and friends make the switch to Linux.

Seriously, as the 'computer guy' in the family do you know how many hours a month Ive saved these past7-9 months NOT having inlaws whine to me about their spyware infested machine that was molasses slow from the first day they got online and hooked their DSL with no requisite software protection, anti-virus, firewalls, adaware, etc?

If my four nieces and three sister and laws and both our moms can all run various Linux distros AND install by themselves new software, well, let me just say that any question of "Is Linux ready for the desktop?" makes me laugh.

Most of the distros used are Mandriva with Damm Small Linux, Fedora and PCLinuxOS.
Automatix2 can be one of those softwares which makes the transition towards Linux OS much easier. Im curious to see how user friendly the interface is.

Thanks for my open source fix of the day.
Now just say FLOSSSSS, GeePeeEll and ArrEmmEsssss and well be fine for the month.

Si.

What may be happening with the laptop over a sound system is you are getting a ground feedback loop. This is caused either by bad electrical grounding or a grounding loop. The cheapest (free) way to fix this problem is to put both the laptop and the sound system on the same outlet. If this is not possible you need to get an isolation transformer, they sell them out there that goes directly on your audio line to remove the ground loop. Here's one I use: http://www.weisd.com/store2/RDLAV-HK1.html (They usually call them "Hum Killers" or "Isolation Transformers") - Hope this helps :)

According to wikipedia there appears to be two fences in Australia, The Rabbit Proof fence and the Dingo fence. It says the Dingo fence is "It is one of the longest structures on the planet."

For the laptop audio noise a quick, cheap fix is to isolate the ground plug from the ground of the building circuit you are plugging the laptop into, which can act as an antennae or pick up noise from other devices in the building.

$.40 Good for recording and playback.

"Screaming at a Wall"! "I Don't Wanna Hear It"! Yeah, Patrick - Loved it! Go on - let the punk flag fly - don't hide it behind some Talking Heads tunes! :)

I know you guys are already eMusic fans, but I gotta say this is another reason I love them - It's been an ideal place to finally get around to getting digital copies of my old punk tapes (Minor Threat, Black Flag, etc) and vinyl (Egg Hunt 7" anyone?). Just another reason that place is totally worth my $9.99/month.

Great show as always guys. Always a pleasure!

I find that OpenNIC is a far better option if you're looking into alternative DNS servers. Geekier anyway.

It has the opposite philosophy of OpenDNS, since it makes sure you can get to all sites, rather than trying to limit what's available.

Perhaps I should have explained a little further.

I get the issue only when using the laptop, a MacBook Pro, in my car AND it's plugged into one of those DC to AC inverters, which is plugged into the 12V power outlet. I get noise in both the built-in speakers and the headphone port, but get lots of noise when I plug the headphone out into the AUX port on my car's sound system.

I've never thought about removing the ground, which I can do simply by using the two-prong directly on the MBP power brick. If that doesn't work, I'll try a USB sound card if I can find one I can return. If even that doesn't work, I"ll try Mike Magnuson's suggestion.

I'm still open to any other suggestions. If you're curious to know what worked for me, check back in a couple of days.

The help is most appreciated!

A point of note if using Automatix you may find that when upgrading your Linux installs to the next version will be fraught with complication. Do back up well if you use Automatix
