What's new in Episode 177
STUFF
Today is the Day of Silence for Internet radio. In response to the recently increased royalty fees in the copyright court Internet radio operators are turning off programming to draw attention to the matter and hopefully create a movement to overturn the ruling. To learn more check out Kurt Hanson's site.
Thomas had a question about DL.TV and Cranky Geek episodes and TiVo Video-on-demand. He wanted to know why the episodes seem a bit behind what is currently online. The short answer is that we need to reformat the video for TiVo's service which requires another lengthy re-render of the show. This is done after the other encoding is done for the downloads. Hopefully we should be able to generate this on a more regular basis as we work up a regular schedule.
Folding@Home update as we continue to work towards the top ranks Robert gives the lowdown on where the DL.TV Folding@Home effort is at and where we're headed.
Anti-iPhone. The iPhone is hot and it's not even out yet!! But if you don't buy into the Apple PR machine or just want a non-white but still chic mobile there are alternatives. With some help from PC Mag's Sasha Segan Anti-iPhone story we give some great reasons not to stand in line at 6pm Friday night.
Robert and Roger present their highlights from the NASCAR race this past Sunday Infineon Raceway. Special thanks to the Dan Patin at NASCAR Images, and Chucke.
Viewer, Stephen, has recommended a couple of free encoding options for those wanting to take saved FLVs and turn them into something more media center friendly. So give Media Encoder and Super a try, and let us know how they work for you.
Happy B-day to the man, the myth, the on vacation, Patrick Norton. Hope he and his family are enjoying the drive to Colorado.

Hey guys- I rarely see anyone mention the PPC6700 pda phone. It's been out for almost 2 years, and is touchscreen like the iPhone. It runs on Windows mobile. There are tons of customizations out there on the web now for it.

PC Mag just did a review of the new Dell XPS M1330 laptop. Are you guys going to get it on to talk about?

There is this company called Palm, they have been making touch screen devices for eons. This isn't even Apple's first attempt at a touch screen device them selves. There are a couple things I hate reading in tech news. It is touch screen like the iPhone, because of course the iPhone was the first and last touch screen device ever made, and, it plays MP3s like the iPod, because of course there were no MP3 players before the iPod (never mind how ever any I owned before the iPod was even thought about).
Yes, I know. The iPod is the default MP3 player that everyone can point at :-P

Okay... let the those that wish to do the happy dance and those that don't to sulk. The iPhone now has data plans and reviews. The good news is that both paint the iPhone in a generally good light. The bad news, we will get to listen to some folks wine and other folks singing praise. Do I want one, well, simply put; YES. Will I get one right away, not likely. $600 is a heck of a lot of money for a phone. No matter how cool said phone happens to be.
At least as a Cingular (oops, AT&T) customer I didn't get cheated. The data plan is basically the same as my blackjack and unlimited SMS. I don't have that at the moment.

I've been in to building desktop computers for a while now and I was tossing around the idea of building a laptop. How difficult is it and what advice would you give a first time laptop builder??

Patrick leaves and the downloads get online faster?
Conspiracy Theory... A pack of wild aliens with a space time fluctuator follow Patrick wherever he goes. To be mean, they speed up time in California so that the downloads seem to take longer to render for the rest of us. Thanks to the tin foil hats that the rest of the DL.tv folks wear on a regular basis, the aliens don't realize that other people render the videos when Patrick is gone.
Or... not.

As to the comment of the person wanting to rip more than one cd at once, if I recall correctly I used audio grabber and could use multiple instances, one for each optical drive. Yeh just checked and have two discs being ripped to the hard drive at once. It does take a while to get set up correctly but after that you're good to go. One instance of the program will usually get ahead of the other with my old xp but on multi threaded?? I can always change focus to whichever is behind though. There running fairly even at the moment though.

Oh yeh forgot to tell ya, when you set up audiograbber make sure it is ripping to seperate folders if more than one instance is running. Say if you have the program set to artist as directory you may have a problem if more than one drive has the same artist but if you use album as directory you should have no problem. It's because it puts a temp file in the directory and if you have more than one instance trying to write to the same temp file???

Thankyou so much for putting it on TiVo. I had tried it manually several times but I TiVO doesnt support and basic video feeds. You have no clue how happy this makes me. It will be such a difference watching the show on 2.5"ish (iPod Video) or 17" screen to a 42" screen.

Can you do a show explaining how to backup and old hard drive (by imaging it to dvd) on a windows 98 computer. The hard drive had 4.2gb of data. Also I can't plug it in to my new computer, because it dosent have a sata conection.

During the show you mentioned that the component and the hdmi off of the PS3 should be the same, I believe this isn't correct. While it is true that the component and hdmi both can output 1080p on ps3 for games, 1080p/i can only be used in a hdmi-hdcp combination.
http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/PS3/GettingStarted/default.html
(Read the "Notes" under the first table.) I had though it was more restictive that even that. The xbox360 can output 1080p on hdmi, vga, and component.

Excellent mention of vibrate function on cells, public places are noisy enough they don't need the constant squawk of cell phones going off.

@James M: HD image of Win98 on DVD
Estimating the age of the PC by the OS and HD size, it is very likely that you might have trouble burning image directly to the DVD (assuming you have DVD burner installed). Performance needed to collect data, prepare it for burn and burn it in real time is likely greater than what your old PC can deliver... Doing so on such PC "as is" you will at least waste some DVD media or at worst never succseed wasting a lot of time in the process. If you have second HD there with more than 4.2GB free space, first make image to it, than burn it using any appropriate software, but from your message it appears you do not have second free HD.
My suggestion: borrow friends external HD if possible. Many people have them nowdays usually with plenty of space vs. 4.2GB needed. Image to it, (writting to HD does not have speed restrictions DVD burning process involves, ie. it can go slow without the problems) connect to your new PC and move image there. Than, if you want image on DVD, make it there.

The timing on those Patrick photoshops after the credits is priceless.

I'd becareful if you run Super, because it's been flagged as having spyware, radlight.
If you've ran this program you may want to check out a-squared Free. it will detect Radlight on your system. Plus the uninstall part of Super doesn't work it leaves behind all shorts of questionable goodies, in your system folder

How to watch DLTV on your television if
you don't have a TIVO:
I noticed that my ($20 after rebate)
DVD player would play DivX files, so
I just download the Divx version of
the shows, burn them to a CD-RW
data disk, and play them on my DVD
player.

Super works great but be worned if you use cygwin it will downgrade your cygwin.dll.
It dose not have any spywere in it at all.
as for the questionable goodies, in your system folder these are normal.

I'm in warsaw poland this week. I hung out in Amsterdam insted of waiting in line for an IPhone, I bought the new blackberry 8830 world phone. Now if anyone knows me I am a techhead, I even had a PDA when they were just Casio data devices. I have had a samsung smartphone/palm os, the xv6600, xv6700, palm treo 600,650, moto q, and now the bb 8830. Guess what they all do the same thing, email, mp3 ect... but I've only had to charge the 8830 twice. this is thursday july 5, I bought the dang thing last friday. Im an email addict and the phone quailty is well without a doubt the best I've had since my qualcomm brick. Now as for europe, if its cheap thin and nokia your in. if its thin your in, if you have a bb your in, why because everyone has an mp3 player in there ear then takes a bud out and then talks on their phone. No bluetooth ear peaces, it isn't hip. they sell them but it isn't the style. there is a phone vendor on just about every corner and everyone walks or rides the bus, so battery life is premo, hence the separate mp3 player no bluetooth and they want call quality. I'm loven the blackberry.
