STUFF
• Roger didn't hate The Transformers. Some of you immediately emailed in to say you did. Others loved it. We shall not speak of it again.
• The Viewer Tech Pic Of The Week is actually a video from Rod in Baghdad, who was advised he had to "destroy" his hard drive by the "System Administrator" types. They "...were unspecific as to the means." So Rod got his marksmanship on with a variety of weapons and totaled the drive. Very cathartic, Rod, thanks for sending it in!
• Got a tech picture you want to share? Email us! dl.tv@ziffdavis.com
• Weather.gov is still our fave source of weather info. The graphical maps are especially good to find out how your travel destination is going to get. Clean interface, good info. (Thanks for the emails about Weather.com getting a fresh design, we'll check it out.)
• Speeding up browsing: Brooks drops us a tip for Firefox.
• EV-DO modems rock, when you can get a full speed connection (a shared 3Mbps!), but out of top urban population centers, aka "out in the sticks," Patrick found 50Kbps dial up modem speeds and horrible latency. Not so impressive. Tons of hotels and motels have pretty good Internet access, just make sure you ask before you check in!
• Franco is upgrading his PC's memory and has to remove the heat sink from his processor to pull one of the sticks. Should he clean off the old paste and add more thermal paste? Definitely. That's the right way to do it. Or you can be lazy and just smooth the cooler right back down when you've got the new memory in place. (Not the right way to do it, but it's worked in the past.)
• Kevin wants a free backpack! (Remember Robert's backpack roundup way back in Episode 71?
• A subnet calculator that doesn't need web access that you can run from a USB flash drive? No problem, Paul. Check out SolarWind's Advanced Subnet Caclculator. It's free!
• A mile is about 1.6 kilometers, a kilogram has 2.2 pounds, and there's roughly 4.5 liters in a gallon. Thanks for the reminder, Graham!
• Can I use the iPhone as a mobile phone modem for my notebook? Nope, Ian, at least not until somebody figures out a hack that enables DUN for the iPhone.
• Recommendations on cleaning SLR lenses? Breath and a clean microfibre cloth is what Patrick uses. Chances are, tho, Markus, if you can't find the bit of dirt on the lens that's showing up in your pictures, you have dust on your sensor. Cleaning the CCD/CMOS sensor in your camera is a tad intense. You can do it at home, but be careful! this is something you might well want to pay a good camera shop to do for you. Here are some HOWTO links: Understanding Digital SLR Sensor Cleaning, putting you camera in Camera Cleaning Mode and one more on CCD Cleaning this page has some great pix of magnified dust spots, along with more cleaning info.
• Yes. We'll demonstrate the proper way to clean a lens. Quit emailing!

good show, you guys seems like you both had a rough night last night. Same here.
I was wondering if you guys could ever get a tour of adobe labs? Or just the office of some bigger companies like Google or Microsoft, since there so close. I have a few friends at Microsoft if needed connections.

Anyways, Time to pass out.

Welcome back Patrick!!, BUT.... I cannot believe that you put down weather.com!!! have you not been there lately????!!!!???? they have new kick arse map that overlays the storms on a satellite image of your location and you can zoom in and out all the way down to your house using that satellite imagery!!! it also has the longest play time for free of storm systems and it is updated automatically as new data arrives, no refresh needed. Come on putting your trust into the government for anything is like throwing caution and freedom to the wind!!!! well maybe not that bad, but WOW the goverment for weather, if you are going to do that then goto NOAA.gov...

11&1/2?

Try 17. Too often I end up with 3/4 length shirts and pants, as well. Life sucks to be tall. I envy your normality.

Funny, am I the only guy that thought the best thing about Transformers was Megan Fox? She looked killer!

I didn't hate Transformers either, but Fantastic 4, Silver Surfer and all, was the better movie. The transforming part was neat, although in the later fight scenes it felt like you were so close you couldn't focus on what was on the screen--it was like a blur of bot parts. Roger was right when he said it was too long, as there were a couple scenes in that movie that did not further the story. I also remember thinking some scenes were silly on purpose. If you can only see one blockbuster movie this summer, go see Fantastic 4.

Alfredo,

US gallons are different from UK gallons that is where the difference comes from. That is why we should standardise on measurements around the world i.e. a metric system where a litre in the UK is the same as in the US.

OMFG! I cannot believe what you did to the digital SLR. First, most people see the dust on their mirror or penamirror (most modern DLSR's don't have a pentaprism any more, too heavy), not the sensor. Then next thing wrong was forcing the mirror up. Actually what you were exposing was the shutter blades. A DSLR works the same way as a film SLR. The mirror moves up, then the shutter fires exposing the film. The only difference is the sensor takes the place of the film.

I would welcome Patrick back, but i hate him right now. He has been flaunting his free "Box of Stuff" on TWIT lately. Well I take him up on his offer, and nothing. I wait everyday on the porch for my box of stuff from Patrick, and I never do see anything. And I am too sad for words.

I have a Canon Digital Rebel XT very similar to the Digital Rebel Patrick was holding. For me, I had never removed my lens except the first time I put it on, and I still HAD DUST. Many cameras will often ship with dust in the camera and on the sensor. I cleaned it using the Sensor Swipe method that you can read about here. IT WORKS!

Patrick mention dictionary.com to research for POS, but that only has a so called polite way Piece Of Stuff, that isnt a real dictionary, go to URBANDICTIONARY.COM that will give you the real meaning of words, updated.

;)
