Xbox 360 on a 44 foot wide screen? iPod Accessories And More!

What's new in Episode 188
STUFF
• Xbox 360 on a 44 foot wide screen? This week's Viewer Tech Pic comes from Robert Hand in Atlanta, GA.
• Brian gives us a critical heads up on AimEncrypt: he says they issue the same key for every user, and to check out Thawte for a personal key. "Securing Your Digital Communcation" explains how to use the free Thawte key to lock down AIM.
• iPhone + AT&T + International Roaming = $3000 Bill? Ouch... check out the story (and AT&T's answer) on boingboing.
• Lossless Bluetooth Audio Coming Soon... Robert won't believe it until products ship, but Open Interface North America's spec for a lossless Bluetooth audio codec could make stereo audio much more enjoyable than the crunchy sound delivered by today's Bluetooth A2DP technology.
• Matt needs a "reliable and safe" waterproof case for his iPod... the best we've seen comes from OtterBox ... they also make a decent pair of underwater earphones.
• Speaking of iPod Accessories... SCOTTEVEST calls it the "Ultimate Hoodie" ... this black hooded fleece packs SEV's "Personal Area Network" system for managing your gadgets and the cables that connect them to you (think holes to pass cables and Velcro-type closers to keep your wires tucked in), 11 pockets, at least three of which we haven't found... tho the MP3 player, cell phone and sunglass pockets were obvious, a key chain clip, a bottle holder, and a reasonably generous hood. At $99.99 it's not cheap (tho it's on sale for $69.99 on sale right now), but there's not really anything else like this out there... if you normally have more than three things clipped to you belt, you know this is looking good.
• And the thing to shorten your headphone cord that doesn't suck? HandStand's The Core.
• 3 Games in 3 Minutes: Scott's back with Games for Window's Darren Gladstone!
• Can a PDA substitute for a notebook for college? Possibly, Cassandra, but it takes some effort to write a report on a PDA screen, and you can't type very fast even if you have a keyboard.
• Hard drives for video cameras? Roger has some ideas for Patrick.
• Yes, Alan, you can capture HD video via the component cables on a Blackmagic Designs Intensity Pro
A Fond Farewell
• Yes, it's true...
This was Patrick's last episode of DL.TV. He's got a baby coming in October, and he's moving on to a new gig. He'll be back, tho, as a guest on DL.TV and CrankyGeeks, and he wants to thank "the incredible crew that watches the show, Mr Callahan and Mr. Young at Ziff Davis for giving us the opportunity, all the folks at Ziff Davis that have contributed (Jim, Steve, Robyn, Michael, Chris, Denise, Bill, Stan, Dan, Sascha, Kyle, Lance, Neil... it's a long list!) and to Robert, Roger, Scott, Annaliza and Brooks, who'll be carrying the DL.TV torch forward. It's a bittersweet, 'cause this has been a lot of fun to put together."

Most Awesome News on the coming baby, Patrick!
You're going to love being a Dad! You're going to make a great one, too. Be sure to have a few and add to the fun.
Best of luck in your new work - we're going to miss you on this show. A lot changed when SS and ZDTV went away. I really feel the fun and magic went out of personal computing when that network was no more. A lot changed since then and things became a lot less friendly.
Best to you and yours!

Well, I am sad about it, angry and just mostly sad. I really wish Tech TV never died. Now its like, all the tech greats have seperated, aside from audio shows and a few great video ones... its not the same. I started watching DL.TV back in 06 and well, sad to see you go. Sure robert will be there, but its not going to be the same.... atleast tell us what your doing instead of "another gig"...thats really not that much info. best wishes. and congrats on your future baby.

I will continue to watch the show but it will not be the same. I hope you keep doing Systm for Rev3 and maybe now you can join Leo and John on TWIT more. Take care buddy. Robert and Roger, you have some big shoes to fill (and a mighty hammer to swing as well).

Dudes, I will be sad about Patrick leaving if I get around to listening to the show (I usually listen during my morning walk). However, somehow the MP3 link is labeled as show 188, but is pointing to show 186. I copied and edited the HTML and was able to grab 188 to listen to it tomorrow. However, this has confused my iTunes podcast subscription.
Best wishes Patrick (baby and job). Good luck carrying the ball Robert.

So I finally got Tech on digital TV in Canada a few years back and Patrick was gone within a month and the rest of the gang quickly followed and the show went Kaput!
I see Patrick about a week ago on "Lab with Leo" here in Canada -- find out about DL.TV -- start watching episodes like crazy -- and Patrick leaves... again!
I'll only forgive you if Rogers Canada has hired you to do a proper computer tech\hardware show because without Leo all G4Tech in Canada has is a gaming channel with some anime.

Nooo! It can't be Patrick. You have great chemistry on DL.TV with Robert Heron. Please come back to host DL.TV frequently. Patrick, congratulations on your baby and unknown job. Can you stay visible on the Internet for us, Patrick? I love Tech TV of the days past. Come on Roger and Robert, you can now be more of a dark tipper on computers now that Jim Louderback and Patrick aren't around. :) I want DL.TV to continue forever.

Ahh crap!
Happy to hear you re going to spend some baby time ... my 2nd is now 2 months, so all I can say is:
hehehe. Seriously, congrats.
Not happy that you will be leaving the show.
Im not one of those people stuck in the past and who believe that all will be well in the universe if the TechTV gang is back in one place.
For tech shows to succeed you need to have more than one solid producer of podcasts.
A strong Cnet, twit.tv, and Ziff-Davis gives us competition which is a good thing.
So Im not all moist at the idea that Patrick will be joining Rev3.
As for this show, love Robert's wit, so Ill still watch for a while but the past few weeks have shown that these two were a perfect online match. Roger is not the answer to anything demanding charisma. Keep him behind the camera and maybe send him over to get CrankyGeeks off the lifesystem.
Garnett Lee was an excellent co-host last time.
I think in the long run it will be a question of whether my like of Robert is going to be higher than my dislike of the new cohost.
How about Wil Harris who appears on Twit? Sure, he has that darn accent but we can live with it.
Or Wil Wheaton?
Maybe some young thing with a healthy amount of cleavage?
Good luck Pat!
See ya Robert at Rev3.
(you know its gonna happen, its like gravity, you cant stop it. Youll be a Rever soon and then you'll be bought out by Google. That's one prediction that is always safe to make.)

Wow! Sorry to hear you are leaving but happy to hear about the new baby and future job adventure. Best of luck to you! DLTV will probably go on but you will be missed greatly. You have a great voice and could do voice over jobs if you got really bored. At least we can go back and watch some of the previous episodes.
Robert - Don't worry too much. I hear Rosie O'Donnel is still looking for a co-host job!

Pat...
I have been following you since the days of Screen Savers (I know Im not the only one!) and I hope that your new gig, (and the impending baby) are the greatest thing that has happened to you!!
As a podcaster, myself, I know the hours put into a show, and I know you will be back, but I will miss you presence on DL.TV!
You have been blessed.

Thanks for the memories Patrick...DL.TV was one of my favorites and not having you on it every time will just feel weird. Congrat on the bundle of joy and wising you all the best in your new venture at Revision3 (another great company) I am sure alot of us will be staying tune to see where you will pop up again to inspire and entertain us again. AS for Robert and Roger and everyone at DL.TV. Keep on trucking...I am certain us fan will still be staying tuned to you guys... cheers!

I began watching DL.TV for both Patrick and Robert, but my main focus soon became Pat. I've been a fan of Patrick since the days of the kilt on The Screen Savers all the way to present day with DL.TV. I even started my own podcasts following Pats' example. Patrick, you shall be sorely missed. I wish you the best of luck in what you do both professionally and personally in the future.

Good luck to ya Patrick and the future of DLTV. ( from a very long time viewer!)
About the PDA part of this episode. Dude's...you are not PDA savvy. Suggest you start hanging at Brighthand.com and PPCthoughts.com. Most any Windows PPC made in the past couple years has Bluetooth (to connect/synch/print to PCs, Phones, Headphones, Printers, Keyboards, etc) and Wifi 802.11 B/G including WPA-PSK security. Batteries can last for a several hours, and many of the classic styled HP unit can use a slip on backing that includes a 2nd battery. Using a BT Keyboard, connected to the College network (it is a Window's device after all, with Word, Excel, Powerpoint, IE, WMP etc all loaded and compatible) you should have no problem. Most newer units with PPC5 or 6 support instant landscape support for improved document handling.

Patrick; I think it's great you are moving on. You seem the type to follow your passion and make your own success. You have also given Roger and others a chance for new opportunities as well. I'm sure Robert will step up to a more challenging role, and a new dynamic will form around the crew. I'm especially looking forward to a new 'Stump Chang' segment with unrehearsed questions answered live: arcane questions need only apply!
Good luck my friend(s)!

Regarding Cassandra's PDA question, I wanted to point out that I saw a guy in class using a PDA with a fold-out keyboard taking notes. The following term I had my own PDA with a fold-out keyboard. It was certainly lighter than a laptop and served its purpose expertly. I can type much faster than I can write. A PDA is a fine device for this purpose. But today, I think I'd just spring the extra couple of hundred bucks and buy a laptop instead. Ultimately, you can do more with a laptop and you'll find yourself in the library one day wishing you had a laptop because your PDA can't do it all.
