What's new in Episode 191
STUFF
• Looks like YouTube wants to drag Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert of Comedy Central fame into court. Viacom it seems is still not happy with YouTube's performance on removing Viacom content from the YouTube site. YouTube hopes the comedic duo will make a favorable impression in court on their behalf.
• Microsoft released nine security patches for Vista this week. Get em while they're hot!
• Robert went over True Crypt the Open Source solution to encrypting your sensitive data from prying the eyes of " The Man", x-spouse, jilted lover or nosey co-workers.
• More 3 Games in 3 Minutes. This week the 3 games are Madden NFL 08, Glory Days 2 and Boogie.
• Linux on a stick? Or rather USB stick. That's right thanks to the helpful folks over at Pen Drive Linux have dozens of helpful stories on getting Linux to boot off the ubiquitous USB flash drive. Things to note: you'll need a mobo that supports booting from USB devices not just USB floppy drives or hard drives, and that not all USB flash drives work. In my experience is that it can be toss up even within the same manufacturers lineup.
• Paint a penguin or rather a Gwin. The folks over at October Toys are running a contest on who does the best work on dolling up a MegaGwin. You can enter it in contest they're having this October 13th down in Long Beach at a toy store and gallery called Alpha Cult. They're asking that the finished Gwins to be sent back by September 28th, but as long as they're there before the show it should be good.
• Paul had a question about external hard drives for his mac mini HDTV. He wanted to run media off it and wanted to know if there were any issues in doing so? The short answer is no. Having done something similar, unless you're using super large uncompressed files or super high bandwidth files most files including HD quicktimes (except the 1080p version on lowered clocked processors) should run fine. Ideally Paul should stick to FireWire drives. If wants to pick up a drive that he'll know will work he should head over to OWC.
• Finally Dale had a question about 120Hz HDTVs and whether they're worth the extra $$$ they're stores are demanding. Rob says no as he can see no current benefit in doing so with the content available right now. Maybe in future revisions of those sets or new players but until stick with the cheaper non-120Hz TVs.

Oh, that was such a short episode for being a once a week online show. I am hoping for more.

I thought that the point of going to once a week was to make the show better. It seemed the same to me.

I agree with Gordon, was expecting at least an hour show as it's only one show a week, also truecrypt and linux on a usb pen is so old news. Come on guys you can and have done better.

Those new chairs have completely changed the dynamic of the show ; )

Reasons for installing applications on a Truecrypt volume? Portable Thunderbird & Sunbird on a flash disk is a lot lighter, a lot safer than carrying my laptop to work every day. My disk likes to run away and hide every time I stop looking at it so it's nice to know [hope] that I'll probably be long dead before anyone manages to steal client data from it.

I tend to agree that this show was a disappointment for a couple of reasons:
It should have been at least an hour. You told us the reason for once a week was to bring us more and better information. I like spending more time on a subject as you did with encryption. But so much time on arts and crafts with Tux? Overall, it seems like a C effort. I know you guys can do better and hope you will accept the constructive criticisms your community is offering.
Thanks!

I agree with Gordon and Paul. I was expecting a longer or better show and got neither, so what was the purpose of going to one show a week??

Hi!
You guys are really great!
Well, the show as it is it's cool, but being a bit longer (like an hour or something) would be awesome.
Anyway, I just love it, it's the best I've seen - and probably the best on the web.

I've heard about truecrypt in the past, and it acctually looks useful. Sometimes I need this kind of software, and thanks for the demo.
Unfortunately, it has only Windows and Linux versions, no Mac OS version.

I'm with Portugal@Folding (yeah :P), and I'm glad to see a team like yours with great resources contributing to the project. Very cool :)
Congratulations on taking "our" 28th ;)

Keep up great work!

I also concur with being let down by this episode and the whole "once a week at the same length as before" idea. The little segments through the week are nice, but.. it's just not the same.

Roger is getting better behind the desk, though :)

DL.tv is owned, somehow, by Ziff-Davis right?

Maybe the scale back to one show but without increase in time is more about cost cutting than anything else?

As an aside, I've been using truecrypt for a LONG time and it works brilliantly on large external HDs. Never had a problem with it. I find twofish gives the fastest performance now on my AMD based system.

Madden??? Are you kidding me. Bioshock is already turning out to be the highest rated game ever made.

I love the DL.TV show no matter the changes. However, I was disappointed at the fact that throughout the show there was a use of profanity that simply was not necessary. I am sitting at my desk watching this with my son and the next thing I know Robert comments on how his ass is happy. Not to mention during the 3 games in 3 minutes report, Darren, or however you spell his name, has to say damn and the God damn, and then hell too many times. Just isn't necessary!

Thanks for the show,
Jerry
