What's new in Episode 194
STUFF
• Robert's out at CEDIA checking out all the latest HDTV displays and developments. So we asked Veronica Belmont from Mahalo to fill in as co-host for the show.
• The big tech news this week was of course Apple's revamp of its iPod line. The biggest head turner, though, had to be the release of the iPod touch.
• DL.TV viewer Jim gave us a heads up on a hidden flight simulator function within Google Earth. According to Jim a simple Ctrl+Alt+A (In OS X it's Command+Option+A), while you're in the program, is all you need to start it up. You can choose from either a F-16 or SR22. Instructions are available if you're having problems getting off the ground.
• Veronica shared some great OS X Terminal hacks she found at Mac OS X Tips. The tips are great ways to tweak the UI so you get the most out of OS X.
• Open up a terminal window in OS X and type the commands in italics.

Stick Widgets on your desktop.

defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES

Transparent items in Dock.

defaults write com.apple.Dock showhidden -bool YES

Turn a screensaver into a wallpaper

/System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Resources/ ScreenSaverEngine.app/Contents/MacOS/ScreenSaverEngine -background

• More 3 Games in 3 Minutes. Garnett Lee, Managing Editor for 1UP.com takes Darren's place to talk about Lair, Medal of Honor: Airborne and Warhawk. Which do you think is the better of the 3?
• Extreme Tech's Loyd Case continues his "Build a PC" series with selecting motherboard, CPU and CPU cooling components.
• Silas had a question about building his own laptop. He wanted to know if doing so was possible and if so what kind of savings could one expect? The short answer is yes and the savings you would receive would be moderate. Although you cannot build a laptop in the same sense as a desktop with a different case, power supply, mobo, monitor, and video, you can build up from a barebones laptop chassis. In some respects it's more akin to assembling a Shuttle PC. If you're interested in building a laptop for the sheer thrill, education, or curiosity check out RJ Tech and Directron. They offer build it yourself notebook options as well as parts.
• Tony had a question about watching TV on his 24" iMac, while getting some PVR functionality along with it. Well Tony's in luck. Pinnacle makes a product called TV for Mac HD Stick that does all that and more. Elgato makes a variety of TV/recording products for the Mac including Pinnacle's HD Stick.

An attractive female in tech? :-O
Whats this world coming too? :-P Veronica rocks.

Oh and leave Roger alone.... Sure in the past it seemed like he didn't like doing the show at all and it annoyed me heaps. Now he seems quite happy and is always entertaining on it. Keep up the good work guys!

Oh please! Roger is fine, he has definitely gotten better as he gets more air time. Did you miss the part where Veronica couldn't type? Why do you think most shows aren't live? Although, Veronica does rock.

I used to like this show.

How can "teminal hacks for OSX" interrest me?
Its somthing for a small fraction of an installed base that doesn't even represent 5% market share (15% for laptop?).

I used to download this show systematically and watch it. I'm not anymore. In fact, I'm looking, from time to time, to the subjects and even if something interrest me, I may not even download the show.

Keep on the good work.

Love the show guys, Roger is great (I listen to east meets west too). Anyway, what's up with the audio second week I've had problems: last week it died this week it's a link to an mp4 file that doesn't exist? Now I can't listen at work, sad day!

You can have Veronica back on the show any old time...one of most intelligent and charming ladies in tech. :) The show is slowly getting better, keep it up...

I agree, Veronica can come back any time any week.
she did a good job on the show. and she kinda cute.:)

Ditto on the pro-Veronica comments.

Roger has had to fill Patrick's shoes, which is no small task. Patrick is very personable on screen. This is what got people to tune into to dl.tv in the first place.

Patrick is like the awesome techy buddy you've never actually met.

Robert seems the the geeky friend of the techy buddy you've never actually met who laughs at his own jokes.

Roger seems like the guy who follows those other two guys around all the time and you wonder why they think he is cool enough to hang with (his riff on a dragon game he played once is a great example).

Roger will never be Patrick and we should stop expecting him to be. He should probably stay on the show until Patrick's kid grows up and joins the cast or if Veronica wants a new day job again.

Three cheers to whomever managed to snag Miss Belmont for the show. Now that she did the show, and appears open to doing some more, you got to make her the official guest host of DLTV.

Stop bashing on Roger, guys! I think he's hilarious and does a wonderful job on the show. Veronica also did very well, and I'd like to see her back doing some guest segments.

First off, Veronica is HOT. Maybe we could have the show hosted with two attractive women... in bikinis. Seriously though, seeing a young attractive woman who likes computers and computer games puts a smile on my face. Both Roger and Veronica seem to be Macintosh fans. I've always considered the MacIntosh to be a non technical machine. Special machines for mommies and daddies that don't require any technical knowledge at all. Tweaking the User Interface seems to be about as technical as it gets on a Mac.

When Apple added a USB port to the Mac that allowed 3rd party hardware upgrades, It must have frightened Apple's customer support department to death. Now they are going to face Mac users asking why their USB printer isn't working. OOOHHH, You need a USB cable, why do they make things so complicated.

Yes, I agree. I love Roger... behind the camera. Robert and Veronica or a different girl would be cool. I might actually come back and watch the show after Pat left.

Keep Roger around, for sure! He's funny and charming, a true entertainer!

Boot Robert, he's got an ego that's way too big for the show, and he truly has the kind of smile that just makes you want to punch it. Not to mention he doesn't seem to know much of anything outside of the TV realm. He is also b-o-r-i-n-g to the extreme!

Robert is the reason I stopped watching after Patrick left. I came back to look for guests filling in for Robert, Veronica is great!

You guys are great! How about Veronica's regular hosting? I think she's cool! And good looking too... Hey Roger! Stick around. You're doin just fine..

Veronica ftw! ;)

Considering she'll be doing a daily show on Mahalo, I think we can pretty much rule out her being the regular host on some other show. But by all means, get her back on as a guest more times if you can.

Personally I think that both Robert and Roger are doing a good job, but both are maybe more of a co-host.

P is right. I still download it (for now) but I really miss Patrick. It seems as though he WAS the show and it has seriously taken a nose dive since. If I wanted video game reviews I would watch X-Play's podcast, STOP IT!! A killer game review now and then is a neat thing , I love Halo as much as the next person, but 3 games (that usually suck) in every episode is ridiculous. This used to be a very good show that the old TSS fans still held as a favorite because of the great tech segments, now it is quickly becoming one of the many mediocre shows on the net.

Hmm...for whatever reason the comment I posted didn't get approved. I won't hypothesize why, I'll just try it again without the active links, and soften the wording a little...

Unfortunately, Loyd Case's dramatic toss of the stock Intel cooler on the basis that it was "very noisy" was completely ill-advised. This information may have been correct 5 years ago, but is not true today.

To the contrary, the Intel stock cooler for the Core 2 Duo is one of the most quiet CPU coolers in a comparison shown here:

http://www.frostytech.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=2132&page=3

...which is why I recommend it as an easy, and cost efficient solution for my listeners looking to build a quiet Home Theater PC. That noise performance, coupled with the fact that many have found it to provide capable cooling, even on mildly overclocked systems, makes it a great cooler, unworthy of being casually tossed aside.

Thanks,

Marshall

Veronica is way cute and has an infectious smile. I really enjoyed her presence in front of the camera. I'd like to see more diversity in the hosting of the show. That's not a slam on Roger or Robert... it's just nice to mix it up.

Glad to see more of Veronica, I was sad to hear she was leaving buzz out loud.

Oh, was I the only one that tried to visit those listings from Craig's List that were on her stickies in Dashboard? Hahaha, I feel like a stalker now, they were all for housing.

Another positive comment for Veronica. Her Mac Terminal tips show why the Mac's eyecandy tricks are so popular. Maybe she can show some macish tips for us PC types. Roger is improving but has a long way to go just yet so I'd like to see an episode with Robert and Veronica to see how the chemistry there is.

Show summary for those who missed it:
The show peaked early with Veronica'
s "dragon on dragon action" quip.
The audio guy from New York's look at the new iPods (I think the most memorable quotes were "we don't care about those" and "not that much to talk about")
Veronica came back with an obscure mac terminal tip the classic line "It is not all that functional".
The show closed on a powerful recommendation of a PVR for Mac that no one actually tested. There was no demonstration for the product.
None of this matters though. Judging from the viewer comments the only thing that matters to the viewers is the personality, screen presence and "chemistry" of the show hosts.

Veronica!!! Yes, I missed her on CNet broadcasts. Great to see her doing well. Oh why not have three hosts? Robert and Roger have a great chemistry. Add Veronica as a third, and the show would absolutely rock.

By the way, how many of you think Veronica is a way cooler version of Chloe?

The PC build segments are tossing out too much information too fast. They are absolutely athoritative and accurate, it would just be nice if they were slowed down a bit. Is there an easy to find parts list someplace - couldn't find it here or at ExtremePC.

Great show, I really enjoy it as a TiVOcast.

FYI, the news from the guys at TiVo is that the TivoToGo update for the Series3 and TivoHD models will be out in November. That's what they're shooting for, anyway.

Veronica Belmont = Amazing. And she plays a mean WoW in Mac OS X. 'Nuff said.

This one is for Lady V. In terminal, after you type a mile long command and you find there is a mistake, press the up key and it should cycle through a list of recent entries. Beats typing everything over. Rock on.

One of the better episode in a while definitely. One gripe though is why Veronica plays on a WoW RP-PVE server?!! Noob! (i keed i keed)
