STUFF
•  A couple of helpful viewers suggested some alternatives to the PC syncing software options we recommended in Show 202. Michael suggested FolderShare a free online folder syncing service available for both Windows and OS X. Another viewer, Garn, recommended Allway Sync a freeware that he uses and quite likes.
•  Gjermund from Norway sent us pics from The Gathering 08 a computer Demo/LAN party started in 1992.
•  Kristina De Nike from JWire was here with 3 great options for extending a wireless connection across a neighborhood. Using services like FON and Meraki or free software like Whisher you can share your broadband or setup a wireless co-op. Which is the best option for you? Watch and find out!
•  While PC gamers have enjoyed map editing and modding for years with the release of Halo 3 console owners can now taste the sweetness that is map editing. 1.up's Mark MacDonald takes us through the highlights of this Halo 3 editing tool simply known as Forge.
•  If you've got an old PC sitting around gathering dust why not give a new lease on life as a network Firewall? All it takes is the open source SmoothWall Express software, a spare PC with a couple of Linux compatible NICs, a couple of hours and a web browser.
•  PixelCorps's Alex Lindsay is back with another great Photoshop tip. Take an attractive looking girl and turn her into a hideous zombie worthy of any Hollywood horror flick. So if you've been itching to turn your boss, spouse, or annoying neighbor into some unspeakable hellspawn, well here's your chance. Also works on boys.
•  Finally, Peter wanted a NAS but was unsure whether he should purchase or build one. In our collective experience the choice comes down to features, money, and what ya got laying around. If you have a stack of left over drives and external USB drive cases to put them in you might be interested in something like Belkin's Network USB Hub. It allows users to connect plain jane USB drives to a router and access them over a network. Turnkey solutions can offer a wealth of features and capabilities but at a higher cost. Among the vendors Rob and Rog like are Infrant's ReadyNAS line and Buffalo's TeraStation line. ExtremeTech did a NAS roundup in Jan 07 with a bunch of reviews including the Thecus we showed on the show.

Hi,
Great show! Would it be possible to post the stages for the photoshop tutorials on a separate page?

Guys,

I just wanted to let you know that this show was very strong - great topics with good execution. I was kind of sitting on the fence since the recent changes, but I'm back strongly in the dl.tv court.

Please keep up the great work.

Thanks, Jim

Kristina De Nike's description of Whisher makes no sense at all. I went to the Whisher website and looked around and I still can't figure out what it does!

Glad to see my favourite tech action figures, Robert "Duke" Heron and Roger "The Mad Max of Cell Phone Destruction" Chang, co-hosting the show now. Cool as the great outdoors! Note to Duke Heron: You should never encourage Mad Max Chang to toss his phone on the dash. How do you think he got his nick?

Don't worry Scott I won't be commenting that much and when I do I'll keep the vulgarity down to an acceptable level. ¶¦0) Great show!!!

OK guys don't you think its a little wasteful power wise to use a PC that will be on 24/7 just so it can be a firewall?

My little Linksys router with DD-WRT firmware does pretty much everything SmoothWall does and only uses a fraction of the power.

Your information about FON is false - it's not "buy the router, get lifetime free access to FON network", but "but the router, then keep it plugged in 24/7 to your broadband connection for life if you want lifetime free access to FON network". Oh, and you pay for the broadband and electricity too. Oh, and they get to resell your connection without giving you a possibility to opt out. Not so rosy is it?

Whisher allows you to share your wireless network and get access anywhere else in the world for free. In that sense it is similar to FON. The difference is that the user doesn't need to change his existing router, to reflash it or anything else. In that sense, it is much easier for the user. You simply install the Whisher application on your computer, share your network in a few steps and here you go. Basic users don't have to bother with cables, advanced users can keep their own high-end routers.
In addition to wifi sharing, Whisher added some social networking features like being able to chat or exchange files with other people connected to the same network.

It's odd that you did a DIY Firewall segment, then talked about NAS and only looked at off the shelf solutions. Wouldn't it have made sense to have the old computer be both the firewall AND the NAS?
