STUFF
• This webcast is sponsored by Hitachi
• Congratulations to Tierre for winning the HDTV Giveaway contest! We'd like to thank everyone that participated , and if you're sad that you didn't win, don't worry we have plans for more giveaways in the future.
• OS X Leopard: If you've been curious about all the hoopla surrounding its release find out as we highlight some of the more interesting features in Apple's latest OS X release.
• Hellgate London: Darren Gladstone from Games For Windows is here with his take on this long awaited RPG. Is good, bad or just plain okay? Find out!
• Ubuntu Eye Candy: Just because Ubuntu is Linux based doesn't mean it doesn't know how to have fun. Robert shows off some the cool visual effects built into Ubuntu and how to activate them.
•  Rob set it up this way: Our Ubuntu 7.10 system has all of the software repositories selected. He then searched the Synaptic Package Manager for "compizconfig" and installed "compizconfig-settings-manager" - as well as all related items. After completing the install, a new options appears under System > Preferences called "Advanced Desktop Effects Settings" - this is also accessible from the Visual Effects tab of the Appearance Preferences (right-click on the desktop). There are dozens of options to try out - enjoy!
• The PS3 and Folding@Home. Like peanut butter and chocolate find out how the PS3 and the Folding@Home project are made for each other.
• Finally, Kriten had a question about syncing files between his two PCs. A good free solution is Microsoft's SyncToy. It's a simple easy to use utility that should cover most people's need. If you need something a bit more feature rich and don't mind paying for it check out Laplink's PCsync. While it is $40 it does have a trial download so you can test drive it before you spend money on it.

Could you guys move on about the folding at home project. I know its a cool project, but does Robert have to mention it over and over again. I am already fast forwarding of many sections of the show. Get a grip guys or the show will be degrading even more.

Sadly your show moved further down on my favorite list.

Top show! That was really good. Thanks Robert for the Ubuntu stuff - it was awesome. Hey, I see they are planning the next release of Ubuntu and will be calling it 'Hardy Heron'. Is this in honour of you?

I've got some pet peeves and this episode has tripped one of them. The issue is computer hardware and software performance. At one point in the show Roger says that Leopard runs OK on his Mac Book with Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2GHz. He then alludes to the idea that this is not much horsepower so, perhaps one shouldn't expect much from it and Leopard. What the hell kind of crack are you guys smoking to believe that a dual core 2GHz machine with more than half a gig of RAM shouldn't be more than ample enough to run ANY operating system well? In fact such a machine should be able to run several operating systems well! Simultaneously! IBM supercomputers of years gone by didn't have that much power or memory.

But you guys and others in your magazine industry continue to blather on like this is some form of crippled antique that one shouldn't expect much from. If your OS, Leopard, Vista, Ubuntu, whatever can't F****** scream on that calibre of hardware, then the OS is UTTER CRAP and should not be accepted by the consumer!!! Come on! Get a grip!

Later in the show, Robert pokes around with Ubuntu (Say oo-boon-too Roger.) and demonstrates some of the Compiz graphical eye candy. He mentions that it'll work with most of today's graphics cards but, fails to mention that that graphics card better also have some horsepower, memory and hardware 3D acceleration. Even with these features, both Ubuntu's Compiz and Vista's Areoglass SIGNIFICANTLY impact the performance of Core 2 Duo 2Ghz. systems with 3D accelerated video cards with 256MB of VRAM! How stupid is that and why do you/we accept it? None of my other video equipment has or requires such power for video display. There is no 256 plus megabyte water cooled graphics card in my HD-DVD player or my HD cable box or my 50 inch 1080p television! Why is it acceptable to require such a video card to be able to rotate the display of a 17 inch PC monitor?!?!?

Crank Master (great name BTW): Regarding Ubuntu's 3D performance, "most of today's graphics cards" = most of today's graphics cards = ATI/Nvidia cards made in the last year will run the 3D effects in Ubuntu 7.10 just fine. I was testing at home using a pretty old FX5200 w/128MB (circa 2003) on an AMD64 3000 box and it showed it's age a bit when I turned on the rotating desktop and set everything on fire (the advanced features). Otherwise, I was running the regular desktop graphics features at max quality with good results at 1680x1050. And my primary gaming rig is a 2yo AMD64 X2 box running Vista with all the eye candy enabled - doesn't effect my gaming performance at all, nor should it. What performance are you talking about? Granted...I did upgrade from a 7800GT 256MB to a 8800GTS 320MB, but my Bioshock addiction "required" DX10 support ;)

What the heck was Robert talking about in the first segment? Some amazing new machine that would let you rip your own DVDs legally? Why would you need a special machine to do this? For a minute, I thought maybe he meant "burn" instead of "rip," since the topic was automated DVD duplicators... but that doesn't make any sense, either!

It was on some "kaleidoscope" site, but I can't find it. Anybody know what he meant?

Hey guys,

Great show again. I was shocked when I found you guys on my Tivo by accident. I was yeah a new screensavers. I am glad you guys are doing a tech show again but my wife hate you for doing a tech show again. She was thrilled with the death of the screensavers. She said oh god they made a new one when she saw Pat and Roger on our TV again (sorry Robert) she didn't remember you from the old days but she did ask where Leo was. Anyway love the show. Keep up the Ubuntu tips Robert. It makes my day to see you pushing Linux in some form and showing it can do the things that Windows does to the desktop user. Robert where are the show not you keep talking about too?

Great show and thanks again guys.

Great show. Enjoyed the OS reviews. I didn't realize Roger was such a Mac fan. Cool.

Maybe this has been covered before, but I couldn't find it. I enjoy watching the program on my TiVo. Computer watching, not so much. But greatly appreciate the option to download and watch there too. Why no 'bloop-bloop' during the TiVocast DL TV intro? I notice there is no sound for the intro on the Cranky Geeks program, also. NYT has it working on the Pogue stuff I watch. Cnet has it working on their TiVocasts. Not a biggie, but as tech people we should be able to fix this. Make it so.

Robert - Loved your stuff on Ubuntu; some caveats though - the fglrx driver for ATI cards is still pretty.. immature. Many ATI users have issues getting the Compiz-Fusion effects working with the latest ATI drivers & newer cards (myself included); it creates system bog down and turns firefox into a snail for scrolling web pages. It can also disable the ability to use other 3D enabled apps/games.

Just an FYI

Was Just rapping up watching this episode, when I heard the viewer question about Syncing. The viewer sounds like he has the same problem I had a few years back, but have solved completely with a wonderful piece of FREE software! FolderShare (www.foldershare.com) is a FREE P2P style syncing program.

You install "Satellites" on each of your computers, then specify which folders you want to keep in-sync. The most amazing part of this software is that it works over the Internet, behind firewalls, and is REAL-TIME!

So in this viewer's case, as he saves files, they are automatically sent to his other computers (I have 5 computers on my account) so when he switches machines, everything is there, and ready to go.

Microsoft bought ByteTaxi, which originally wrote the software. They made it completely free, but never really did anything other than maintain the network. I would love to see more done with this software, and maybe if more users get on board, Microsoft will let it take off again.

Great work guy, love the show, its wonderful to have this show since TechTV went all gaming. Thanks!

Current TFLOPS
Windows 171
Mac OS X/PowerPC 7
Mac OS X/Intel 14
Linux 38
GPU 40
PLAYSTATION®3 1033
Total 1303

Take away the PS3 and the total is 270

I guess you guys are right Sony didn't make a difference.

The record is not based on units done but total processing power.

Great show guys.
I have been using free synctoy w/Vista 1.4 (now 2.0 beta)and it works great.I have it on schedule to run once everyday.it backs documents folder to a external drive. There are 3 options so you can syncronize, Echo, or Contribute.

I agree with the post by William P.... Foldershare is truly a great free service by MS.

I have my game and work folders shared between two different locations. As soon as I save a game or office doc file it is also saved automatically (if connected) on the other computer. So when i get home i can continue where i left off working or playing.

It is also works to share certain folders with as many people as you'd like. you can access your complete computers files from any computer if needed.

Take Care

Keep up the good work, watching this episode for the fisrt time on my iPod Touch :) streaming via wifi.

I think you would make a note on the main page stating that the iPod/psp version is in the correct format for iPhone/touch for streaming via wifi or edge.

All the best

How about a link on DL.TV that would allow viewers to show their appreciation and buy a subscription to PC Mag?
Maybe it could be a couple dollars off the regular price.
Maybe this is such a good idea that you should send me a free subscription.

For Syncing folder, I recently try a software done by Windows Live Team.. it's call FolderShare
https://www.foldershare.com/

Maybe you can take a look and let the viewer know your feedback.

I found your show thanks to the link being there in my TVersity install - which enabled me to watch via my PS3.
The way you were pronouncing Ubuntu was hilarious!!
Ooo-boo-n-too?!?!?

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_%28Linux_distribution%29
It's: oo-BOON-too
Even http://www.ubuntu.com/ tells you this.

Great program, though. Had me hooked.
