STUFF
• Robert is back in the saddle again.
• Our Viewer Tech Pic of the Week is from Ric in Ohio.
• Hulu.com Goes Live! We take a look at the added content and Scott talks about subscribing to a show and an annoying aspect of the playlist functionality. But he still loves the site.
• Want to speed up your web surfing or have more control over what sites can be accessed from your computers? We show you the what/why/how of OpenDNS.
• Our Viewer Question is from Kim in Georgia:
What is a HDMI converter? I just brought a 1080p HDTV and a HD DVD player but my cable box is not a HD box. Will a HDMI converter help my cable box?
I don't recommend the use of any "HDMI converter" products as they can be costly and will provide no picture quality improvements over using the satellite receiver's analog video ports directly. And whenever possible, avoid using a device's composite video port if an S-Video port (or component video) can be used instead. Of course, if the source device and HDTV have HDMI ports, then always use them for the best possible image quality. I recommend going to www.monoprice.com and www.bluejeanscable.com. You should be able to find the cables you need at a better price than brick and mortor stores.

Hmm... OpenDNS may work for those who live close to their DNS servers in DC, NY, Seattle and Palo Alto but it was too slow for me. Yahoo! took 7 seconds to load where it usually takes 2. I pinged one of their servers: 208.67.222.222 avg 102ms, Ma Bell's main DNS avg 52ms. It's cool, and did work but a bit slow. Could be used when Ma Bell's goes down at times... Great show! Erm... why did Scott look like he had two black eyes?

OpenDNS is a great service in theory but it practice it has not worked well for me. Lookups often take 3 to 5 time as long. I think this is because their servers are geographically distant with many hops between my network and theirs.

Well Krankcase,
The reason why I look like I have 2 black eyes is the fact that I have a 16 month old and allergies. Spring has made me look like I went 3 rounds and Chuck Lidell's punching bag. Thanks for noticing.

Oh I see, a punch up with a 16 month old and allergies. Gangin' up on ya huh? Nothing a good antihistamine and a shot of Jack Black can't fix!ΒΆ=0o Cheers!

Not to threadjack too much but does anyone know which episode had a segment on the differences between digital and optical zoom? I'm pretty sure it was on dl.tv....

DNS speed is not all ping time. If your DNS server doesn't have the result in cache, it's going to have to traverse the Internet. OpenDNS has huge shared caches, among other innovations.

Open DNS was pretty slow for me too. I also tried the ones at 4.2.2.2, 4.2.2.3, etc. but since I'm using Qwest DSL the Qwest ones at 207.171.3.65 and ..2.65 are actually the fastest.

Nice return Robert and I like you and Scott as Host's...the open DNS is interesting info and I like the looks of the Lenovo x300 but did it have an ethernet port?

Great show. Didn't know OpenDNS had filtering. I'll definitely be hitting that up.
Was it just me? The H.264 vid that I d/l seemed a little stretched. No biggie.

"If your DNS server doesn't have the result in cache, it's going to have to traverse the Internet." That's why I chose Yahoo! for the test I ran. I thought it was popular enough to maintain current look up status. Maybe the DL.TV team could get Mr. Roberts to do an interview to explain the mysteries of DNS overall. I must admit I don't understand enough about this topic myself...

Phillip,
No, It wasn't just you. I came to this site just so I can find out about the aspect ratio of the video. It looked liked a 4:3 video squashed and stretched to 16:9/10.
This form of video distortion drives me nuts. I had to minimize it. At least I listened to it.

" Hulu.com Goes Live! " Yeah, right, for the U.S. only.
Why is Europe always last with the new cool stuff ??
nice show anyways, it's getting better, tnx
Would like to see more subjects/items/segments per show, just a bit more fast-paced.
Euuh ... Robert, share some of your HD knowledge with us, some reviews and tips ....please.
Never noticed till I read it " ..Scott look like he had two black eyes" , looked fine to me.
tnx again, nice show

On the X300, one thing you forgot to mention was that Ethernet is built-in compared to MacBook Air in which you have to purchase a USB-to-Ethernet converter which takes up your one and only USB connection

I have been using OpenDNS for several months and love it. It is much faster and provides services that ISPs do not. These extras alone make the use of OpenDNS worth your time to configure your router with the new IP addresses. As for speed, I ran a trace route to the IP of my ISP DNS servers and then to the OpenDNS servers to find there are only three extra hops. A ping to a specific URL using both sets of DNS servers showed only a 1ms difference. This is only my experience but I would think yours should not be much different. Keep in mind that when running a ping you must use a URL and not an IP or else the DNS servers are not in play. I bet everyone that reads this already knows that though.

Its great that Hulu.com is out but it kinda stinks that
overseas will be able to watch it. Only in the stats will you see it on descent time(lag).

OpenDNS caused my network printer and NAS (Netgear SC101) to quit working. Seemed to change overall IP's of network. Changed IP of printer fine, but NAS is still all messed up.
So be cautious if you have alot of network equipment.

Should be noted that DNS = Domain Name System not Domain Name Service.

I tried OpenDNS and I'm not sure whether it was faster or not, but I do love the shortcut options. I have like 50 shortcuts(g = google, d = dl.tv, y = yahoo, etc.) that option is down right awesome. As for hulu, it doesn't have complete sets of episodes so not really that great, atleast for the shows I wanted to watch.
The show is pretty good, but it would be much better if it were at least an hour, more topics, less game talk, and more viewer questions answered.
Though the show is still great. :)
