STUFF
• Jason Cross of ExtremeTech.com joins Robert on set.
• Today's Tech Pic of the Week is from Gregg of Cold Spring Harbor, NY. He has some serious download speed.
• Crispin Boyer, Senior Executive Editor for the 1UP Network, reviews Grand Theft Auto 4.
• Assistant Producer Sam Arbizo had some quality time with the Neuros OSD.
• We have 2 viewer questions today.
First question is from Chris of Winter Springs, FL: Here in Florida, the frequent summer rainstorms are so large that they easily block satellite TV reception. Do you have any suggestions on how to overcome this "line of site" problem? I've heard that if you ask really nicely, you can get a 24" dish for slightly better reception.
Second question is from J of Cameron, NC: My parents have a rear projection TV with a little screen burn-in from watching too much QVC. Have you heard of the PixelProtector DVD? What do you recommend for a DIY repair kit, if one exists?
• We have a Folding@Home update. Team DL.TV has reach the #10 spot. Thank you all for your efforts. There is a new GPU Folding client. Jason Cross was able to take a long look at the client as well as talk to Prof. Vijay Pande about how the client works. Click HERE to read Jason's article and HERE to read the GPU FAQ.
• Robert forgot to mention that the latest incarnation of the Ubuntu operating system, v8.04 aka "The Hardy Heron", has been officially released. Desktop and server editions are available in 32 bit and 64 bit flavors.

The Ubuntu website is being hammered pretty hard with requests for the new OS so here is a page of BitTorrent links for most every version of Ubuntu including Hardy Heron (v8.04). Tip: scroll down to the "hardy-desktop-xxx" or "hardy-dvd-xxx" sections and get your Ubuntu torrent on.
• Robert received his DTV converter box coupons in the mail, and its doubtful that he'll even use them (they do expire after a period of time). For more info about the 2009 DTV transition and the U.S. government's converter box coupon program, check out Robert's informative article.
• Next week: Loyd Case will be back on the show. So, if you have a question for the Editor of ExtremeTech.com, Email us at dl.tv@ziffdavis.com with 'Ask Loyd' in the subject line.

About the Folding@Home segment and running multiple clients.

Running a CPU and GPU client at the same time is no problem. The GPU one does require the CPU's attention to feed it data but it won't run it to 100%. I have a Q6600 2.4Ghz OC'd to 3Ghz and an x1950 Pro. With the GPU alone it uses 50-75% of one core. If you have a faster video card it may use more CPU time but there will be plenty left over for a CPU client, whether you use the SMP one or an instance of the standard client for each core.

By not running the GPU client, I can shave 2 min. per % but adding it more than makes up for the extra time on the CPU side.

The one thing you must do is set the priority of the GPU client to low and the CPU client to idle when you install them. Video cards don't have a concept of priority like a CPU does, but the program running on the CPU that feeds it with data does. If you don't, the GPU will spend most of it's time waiting for data with nothing better to do than refresh it's DRAM.

When are we going to get a test drive of the Hardy Heron conducted by the hardy Heron?

I saw on friends computer the beta using KDE 4 as well as the eye candy turned on and if youre into that kind of visual stimulation then you are going to love this.
The two proprietary OS have nothing on some fully loaded Linux when it comes to this stuff.

I"m not sure if its officialy the case but did anyone notice on http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=57391 that dl.tv's contributions droped dead on the day of last weeks episode. Must'a been the fact of them advertising smp clients. Those things are slow but hopefully they provide in the long run.
